In words and music, Octet examines internet fallout In Octet, running through Sept. 7 at Hudson Valley Shakespeare, eight internet addicts gather at a self-help meeting in a church basement to save themselves and warn the world about the rampaging monster that devours souls and infects human interaction. For five years, artistic director Davis McCallum pursued Octet, a "chamber choir musical" that features complex eight-part a cappella harmonies often delivered while performers dance or run around the stage. The show debuted in 2019 with an extended off-Broadway run, but the rights holder kept a tight grip after the pandemic killed plans for a film and Broadway production, McCallum says. Productions are now scheduled for Chicago and Toronto. In Philipstown, the HVS cast delivers solid performances that elicited strong applause on opening night (Aug. 16) as each actor took solo turns and melded back into the drum-tight ensemble. Several scenes animate the frantic scrolling and trolling and fretting and freaking out that transpires on corrosive online forums. The title reflects the number of characters but also refers to the eight bits that form a byte, the smallest nugget of computer data. Dave Malloy, who lives in Beacon, wrote the dialogue and thoroughly original score, which seesaws between lush harmonies and more angular passages. References include doo-wop, barbershop, shape notes, Gregorian chants and Tuvan throat singing. Clever wordplay and rapid dialogue abound; Malloy conveys an awful lot of jargon surrounding the machines taking over the world and leaving grievous human fallout. Prudes beware: many F-bombs are dropped, and Eddy the incel (Adam Bashian) laments in graphic detail the content of his foray into pornography at age 9. Toby (Luis Quintero) despairs that "an entire generation of children growing up has seen" a video with a horrifying act. "They will be the greatest monsters humanity ever created." Calling internet consumers "homogenized sheep," blind to the numbing and dumbing, he asks: "Where have all the punk rock kids gone?" A sad interchange between antisocial Eddy and Karly (Melissa Mahoney) about the insidious aspects of porn captures dating-site lunacy. As Henry, Gunnar Manchester's dancing piled more hilarity onto an already funny number about gaming addicts. Testifying to Anand Nagraj's talent, his spot-on Marvin, the geek know-it-all, is a 180-degree pivot from his bombastic portrayal of Antipholus of Ephesus in A Comedy of Errors earlier this season. Jill Paice (Jessica) presents pitch-perfect, deer-in-the-headlights expressions as the white woman canceled after her public flip-out went viral. Alexis Tidwell's Paula elicits empathy as her husband scorns her in bed and scrolls on, oblivious to the fact that a glass of water on the nightstand has gathered dust. The hope is that the internet can redeem people like Velma, who hasn't "really talked to anyone in like two years." Mia Pak slays with the character's poignant material. On Aug. 18, after the show's only solo take as everyone else reposes in a drug-induced coma for five minutes, she cried and subtly dabbed her cheek with a tissue. Velma revels in meeting someone online who is "just like me" but lives across the sea. Arguably, this is a human connection (bot? catfisher?), but she stops cutting herself with hashtag slashes and no longer sees herself as fat, gross, "stupid and lazy / sad and crazy." Octet opens with an elegiac pining for a pristine forest, which represents the pre-internet days that have been bulldozed by the information superhighway. The remedy is to find a field (sans Wi-Fi or hot spot) and "lie there in the grass / let the morning hours pass." Maybe bring along a Walkman or boombox and blast some punk rock. Instead, the court requested the defense and prosecution to collaboratively create a comprehensive list of all evidence, when it was turned over, and which items are considered prejudicial by the defense. This is complicated by the fact that the prosecution did not consistently bate stamp documents. Another significant issue is the ongoing delay in receiving discovery related to Former Trooper Michael Proctor's text messages, which are relevant to five cases, including the Myles King case. The court is waiting for federal authorities to release this discovery. The defense is frustrated by the continuous "dripping faucet" of new discovery, making it difficult to prepare their case. The bar for dismissing a case due to discovery failures in Massachusetts is high, and typically, the remedy is to grant more time for trial. The Karen Read case has brought attention to this widespread issue of lingering discovery in Massachusetts cases. The next hearing for the Myles King case is scheduled for August 12th at 2pmET, where the judge will continue to try and clarify the specific evidence at issue for the motion to dismiss. Neither Adam Lally nor Proctor testified on August 5th, and they are not expected to testify on August 12th either. Transitions—graduations, moves, empty nesting—often prompt us to ask, “God, what do I do?” Katie Reid begins with the importance of remembering God's past faithfulness. Just as God's people in Scripture set up literal memorial stones to help future generations recall His mighty works, we're called to do the same in our own way. When facing the unknown, look back: Has God ever provided when you couldn't see the way forward? Remembering builds faith for the present and the future. Katie offers a practical tip: Share stories of God's provision with your family or community. This strengthens everyone's faith and creates a culture of expectation for God's continued faithfulness. A common misconception is that God's rules are restrictive. However, the Book of Judges and Katie's personal example remind us that God's guidance is meant for our protection and ultimate freedom. Just as parents warn children out of love, God sets boundaries to spare us unnecessary pain and lead us to fuller life. Katie invites us: Consider a time you resisted God's leading, only to discover later that His way was truly for your good. In Judges 1, the Israelites start out strong in obeying God, but falter when they encounter intimidating obstacles (“iron chariots”). Katie shares from her own experience—facing a daunting move to Florida without knowing all the details—that sometimes God asks us to walk forward in faith before providing the full picture. Partial obedience or giving in to intimidation can rob us of experiencing God's best. Katie suggests, Ask yourself: What are your “iron chariots”—those fears or obstacles tempting you to stop short? Where might God be inviting you to complete, not just partial, obedience? Prayer is our lifeline, especially in confusing times. The Israelites often forgot to inquire of the Lord, leading to trouble. Katie urges that “SOS prayers” (“God, help!”) are not only acceptable, but powerful. Lean into God honestly—He delights in our dependence, not our performance. So, in moments of overwhelm, pause and simply pray. No fancy words needed. Dependence is what God desires. Both obedience and disobedience set ripples in motion for generations. Testifying—sharing what God has done—points others to His ongoing goodness. Judges 5 models this with a “testimony song,” celebrating God's victories. Here's an idea: Write down or verbally share a recent “God moment” with a friend or family member. The Book of Judges isn't just a cautionary tale; it's an invitation to deeper trust and practical obedience. Remember what God has done, trust His commands, move forward in faith—even without all the answers—and don't be afraid to cry out honestly in prayer. Celebrate small wins, and share what God is doing. This is how uncertain times become seasons of spiritual growth and fresh clarity. Throughout the study, Katie invites us to apply these lessons in our transitions, decisions, and daily walk, trusting that God leads, remembers, and is always faithful. Mike Marza and ABC News Legal analyst Channa Lloyd recap Tuesday's testimony in the Sean Diddy Combs trial. Sean “Diddy” Combs was the Michael Jordan of drug-fueled sex parties – at least, according to himself.    That revelation was included in another day of testimony from Combs' ex-girlfriend, who alleges she was forced to participate in degrading sex with male prostitutes for Combs' voyeuristic gratification.   Testifying under the pseudonym “Jane,” the ex-girlfriend has spent four days walking a federal jury in Manhattan through a life that was funded by Combs and centered on his sexual appetites. She said she spent so much time participating in sexual encounters that Combs compared her, himself, and a male escort to well-known sports stars.    A male escort they frequently hired was, to Combs, “Shaquille O'Neal.”  Jane was compared and labeled “Kobe Bryant.”  Combs considered himself to be “Jordan,” Jane testified.    The athletic comparisons capped off the 24th day of the rap mogul's sex-trafficking and racketeering conspiracy trial, as defense attorneys tried to cast doubt on Jane's claims that she was coerced to participate in the sex parties. The fourth week of testimony in the sex-trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs concluded with deeply emotional and disturbing testimony from one of rap mogul's ex-girlfriends, who told jurors she was forced to participate in days-long sexual encounters with male prostitutes as late as August 2024.  Jane's testimony at times mirrored the allegations made by Comb's other ex-girlfriend, the musician Cassie Ventura, who likewise, took the jury through a narrative of male prostitutes, days-long sexual encounters and the drugs and alcohol that fueled them.    Testifying through tears, the woman, using the pseudonym “Jane,” told jurors Combs provided her drugs and forced her to participate in the orgies – called “freak-offs” or “hotel nights”– for the three years of her relationship. She testified that the routine only ended when federal agents arrested Combs in September 2024 for sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and prostitution.    Jane alleged that the “hotel nights” could last as long as three days and would require her, during the sessions, to have sex with up to three other men in addition to Combs. Saying she felt pressure to please Combs, who would masturbate while watching Jane and alternate with the male escorts, Jane said she relied on drugs to make it through the degrading marathons. Karen Read's trial got lit on Monday, when Karen Read's accident reconstructionist, Daniel Wolfe took the stand in yet another voire dire in which he came empty handed. Wolfe testified unbelievably that he couldn't retrieve his text messages exchanges with the defense. He said he switched carriers, talked on the encrypted app Signal (Karen Read's preferred method of communication with her defense atorneys and Aidan Kearney). Signal has a feature that auto-deletes their texts. Wolfe was also struck with sudden onset amnesia at other times, answering “I don't recall” to a majority of Mr Brennan's questions.
