Joining me today is actor, author and filmmaker Leandro Taub. Leandro has found incredible success in many creative disciplines - first as an author (he’s been published 5 times and counting), then as an actor - debuting in Endless Poetry, which premiered at the Cannes film festival in 2016, and now as a filmmaker with his first feature film titled Externo. Throughout the interview we delve into Leandro’s creative process and discuss exactly what it took for him to find success in so many different creative fields. We also chat about his film Externo at length, detailing the entire process from development to production to festival strategy and beyond.
Beef’s back on the menu this week as the boys disagree over Alejandro Jodorowsky’s late-career output, The Dance of Reality (2013) and Endless Poetry (2016). Ravishing, restorative poetry or cringey, non-cinematic fluff? And we’re not just talking about Ralph and Owen’s camera rolls. Let the fight begin!
In this episode we are joined by special guests Sidney Manuel and David Moss of the Parking Lot Movie Podcast to review another poetry flick: Alejandro Jodorowsky's Endless Poetry. Spoilers abound, so if you plan on watching the movie, watch it before you listen.
Lieber Alejandro Jodorowskys alte Werke nachholen oder noch mal ansehen. Amazon-Links in the bio! ;)
Sicario: Day of the Soldado is an unexpected sequel that nobody knew they wanted. Was it worth making, or does it fall in the shadows of the original film? Margot Ferrick creates sequential art that's haunting, poetic and utterly distinctive, and it was a joy for me to read back over her books in preparation for our talk and discover themes and recurring motifs. Although I had difficulty remembering the name of an Alejandro Jodorowsky film (Endless Poetry) and a Joseph Campbell book (Hero with a Thousand Faces), we had a moving and far-ranging talk about motherhood, prayer, ballet, Long Island, sex, Catholic ritual, the enduring appeal of Eva Hesse and much more.
Bijou Banter is back to discuss A Ghost Story (playing at FilmScene at least until 9/28) with special guest Da'shawne Smiley as well as Endless Poetry (FilmScene run ends 9/21) and Alien (Bijou After Hours on 9/23). RIP Harry Dean Stanton. Oh no, Nate accidentally called him "Henry" at the beginning of the show, please forgive him.Art House Theater Day at FilmScene on September 24th! See you there!
This week we're doing it for the 'Gram with a review of Ingrid Goes West, as well as other films we watched during the week. This week the creatures play a "Little" game, talk about their earliest memories, and discuss upcoming horror releases in August. Also mentioned: The King of Comedy, Maximum Overdrive, Wild Beasts, Final Flesh, Bedeviled, etc... Welcome back! After a somewhat-long hiatus (we explain why, sort of), we get right into it and talk about some things that have happened and movies Jack and Andrew have seen since the last FULL recording (as in, before episodes 90 and 91 on Spider-Man and Dunkirk, which we hope you've heard and enjoyed by now. 1st - Jack brings up some people who have passed on since last recording, and while Martin Landau, John Heard and Sam Shephard get some notice, it's the father of the "Zombie" movie, GEORGE A. ROMERO, who gets a spotlight in discussion here and about his impact on independent and horror cinema. 2nd- at 32:02 minutes in (if you care to skip ahead to this specifically), we discuss the eighth feature film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky in 50 years, ENDLESS POETRY, and about how it fares compared to the previous Jodorowsky autobiographical piece, THE DANCE OF REALITY (fyi, we feature some Spanish language track from the trailer here so you've been warned). 3rd- Trailers from Comic-Con came out and so we talk about a few of them, chiefly THOR: RAGNAROK, JUSTICE LEAGUE (Andrew continues to have some words about this one, following some talk on previous episodes, but here more aimed at what "lobbing" lines of dialog means), and Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE (chiefly: what's with that description Spielberg is given in the trailer?) 4th- Jack talks about having seen BABY DRIVER three times, and also ATOMIC BLONDE, WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (briefly), and Andrew sees THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETY or, more accurately, tries to. 5th- Jack tries to put up a defense for Roger Corman after reading what may or may not be a "Required Reading" (we'll just label it as such in a playlist) of Corman's memoir: "HOW I MADE A HUNDRED MOVIES AND NEVER LOST A DIME" against a very skeptical Andrew. On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, two cinematic titans are in conversation as Darren Aronofsky sits down with the legendary Alejandro Jodorowsky, to coincide with the theatrical release of the 88-year-old cult director's new film, Endless Poetry. The two have a fascinating, wide-ranging conversation that takes in the challenge of making art within the Hollywood system, the ability of films to heal, the vulgarity of Trump and life's big questions – death, God, aliens, the universe – and Jodorowsky also fulfills a longheld dream of the Black Swan director's by reading his tarot. Episode 71 of One Week Only! This week's key film is "False Confessions," an 18th century French farce adapted to the modern age but retaining its delightful mix of romantic entanglements and complex deceptions. Directed by Luc Bondy and starring Isabelle Huppert and Louis Garrel, it's a theatrical but entertaining comedy about a hive of colorful characters bouncing off each other in pursuit of love and money, and featuring another wonderful performance from Huppert. Now Playing in New York, and coming soon to Los Angeles. (45:30) We also review the thrilling period drama "Lady Macbeth" directed by Wiliam Oldroyd (14:50); the gorgeous and exhilarating "Endless Poetry" directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky (26:35); and the delightful musical comedy "Footnotes" directed by Paul Calori & Kostia Testut (37:40). Hosted by Carlos Aguilar & Conor Holt. Music by Kevin MacLeod at www.incompetech.com
The Luis Buñuel Drinking Game The wanderer returns. After a month away Rob is back, and what a week to return! We kick things off with another trip to Korea with Kim Jee Woon's spy thriller "Age of Shadows", and then everything gets delightfully weird as it seems to be genital week for off the shelf, beginning with Bunuel's "Phantom of the Liberty". The meat in this nonsensicapalooza pie is the Spanish splatter film "Pieces" before we reach the finale of this weird show - Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Endless Poetry".
