As far as sequels go, Day of the Soldado follows closely in the original's footsteps, even if it ultimately falls short of living up to masterpiece that is Sicario!

(Unlocked from Patreon) [note: I quoted/translated extensively from Oswaldo Zavala's Los cárteles no existen: Narcotráfico y cultura en México (2018) because it had not yet been translated yet into English. Subsequently, an English translation has come out] First entry into a new series on paranoid cinema, and I'm joined by Dmitri (@drposhlost) of Subliminal Jihad to discuss the Sicario films, Sicario (2015) and Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018). We go through the plots of each film and discuss how they might function as a limited hangout. Among various topics, we talk about Taylor Sheridan and the nature of screenwriting. Then we discuss the broader Mexican drug war. We talk about the banks, McCoy and Peter Dale Scott, plane crashes and container ships, and then compared the Sicario films to the analysis provided by the book Los Carteles No Existen (The Cartels Do Not Exist) by Oswaldo Zavala, before arriving at the dark truth about the drug war in Mexico. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 10 of the Director Watch Podcast, they discuss the next film in their Denis Villeneuve series, Sicario (2015). After releasing Prisoners and Enemy back to back, Villeneuve returned the following year with his most confident film to date. Set around the U.S and Mexico border, Sicario dives deep into the murky waters of the ongoing fight to stop the drug cartels from moving their product into the U.S. Lead by an all-star cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio Del Toro, and stellar cinematography from Roger Deakins, Sicario ranks highly within Villeneuve's filmography, showcasing a true sense of tension throughout each from of the film. Ryan and Jay break down the politics of the film, the rise of screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, Blunt and Del Toro's magnetic chemistry, and even talk a little about the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h38m. The guys will be back next week to continue their Denis Villeneuve series with a look at Arrival. You can stream Arrival on Netflix as well as rent via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Sicario: Day Of The Soldado holds a 62% score on RottenTomatoes (vs. the first film at 92%). Roger Deakins and Josh Brolin agreed in a podcast interview that it was more action-based than character-driven. My perhaps controversial opinion is that Sicario: Day of the Soldado is to the first Sicario as The Godfather Part II is to The Godfather (bolder, darker, requires repeat viewings to access, but might be even better). I make the case in this episode. Come back to Watch This Tonight as your podcast for the best film recommendations. My guest in this episode is Sherman Allen. He's a good friend, a motorcycle riding buddy, and a prolific actor. He's been in shows like Better Call Saul, Longmire, Manhattan, and movies like Spare Parts (that film makes me cry, and not because of Sherm's acting!) and Sicario Day of the Soldado. He got into e-bikes partly from my suggestion, and partly because his brother Bill Allen, also an actor, also who I've had on the show, is a huge fan of e-bikes. We talk about e-bikes, electric motorcycles and some fun stories about both. #electricbikes #shermanallen

Jeffrey Donovan plays Detective Frank Cosgrove in the 21st season of the NBC drama "Law & Order." Donovan is perhaps best known for his leading work as former CIA operative Michael Westen on the Emmy Award-nominated USA series "Burn Notice" for seven seasons. Donovan received strong recognition playing North Dakota off-kilter mobster Dodd Gerhardt in the second season of Noah Hawley's critically acclaimed "Fargo" on FX, and was cast as series lead Charlie Haverford, a tarot-reading con-artist, on Hulu's "Shut Eye." On the film side, Donovan recently filmed a sequence of back-to-back films - "National Champions" for director Ric Roman Waugh starring opposite J.K. Simmons; the western "Surrounded," opposite Letitia Wright and Jamie Bell; the hostage drama "892," opposite John Boyega and Michael Kenneth Williams; and the family drama "First Love," opposite Diane Kruger. Past features include "Wrath of Man" for director Guy Ritchie; "Let Him Go," alongside Kevin Costner and Diane Lane; and Noah Hawley's "Lucy in the Sky," alongside Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm. His other film credits include "Sicario: Day of the Soldado," opposite Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro; "Villains," opposite Bill Skarsgård and Kyra Sedgwick; "Honest Thief," opposite Liam Neeson; Denis Villeneuve's "Sicario"; Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar," playing Robert F. Kennedy, "The Changeling"; Rob Reiner's "LBJ," playing John F. Kennedy; and Ric Roman Waugh's "Shot Caller."

http://www.claynferno.com/ http://claynferno.substack.com http://twitter.com/claynferno http://twitch.tv/claynferno http://youtube.com/claynferno Never have I tuned the algorithm so quickly on YouTube so quickly to my immediate interests. An hour after completing the Season 4 Finale of the top-streamed Taylor Sheridan show Yellowstone, I'm being fed top bull rider videos from Vice News, Stories from The Bunkhouse from the franchise itself, and Peter Travers and Kevin Costner's making of Yellowstone interview, worthy of the embed below. Costner was pitched Yellowstone as a 10-part movie, not a series The actor only has 5-10 Western movies he thinks are up to snuff Built 3 canoes before he was 18 after admiring James Stewart in How The West Was Won at a birthday party when he was 6 years old Costner is set to start shooting period Western “Horizon” in August The twenty-minute video gives some insight into the man who is and who plays John Dutton. I saved the Costner interview to watch after a battery of Entertainment Tonight interviews with the other stars of the show. For the record, I've been watching this mostly on my own, this is not a show I watch with my long-suffering partner who I keep telling to “Cowboy Up”. Tonight, one of her burlesque troupe members was here with her to prep for a show, while I somehow made my way through the Season Finale of Yellowstone. I have 1883 to watch now, but I am sad that I am so caught up. I cried 5 times. For the record, I cry when I see Costner in Man of Steel professing “You ARE my son” to young Kal-El. Every. Damn Time. At least 3 of the Yellowstone cries were for these father/son moments between the complex characters in the show. I discovered recently that my current obsession makes a lot of sense. I'm really enjoying my new and gigantic TV with Yellowstone. Tyler Sheridan, real-life cowboy, actor, and creator of the show is responsible for one of my favorite movies in recent years, Sicario and the sequel (not as great in my mind, Sicario: Day of The Soldado. At my friend's wedding in Puerto Rico, Benicio Del Toro was at the same resort hotel. Christ, you could have filmed part of this movie at this hotel. President Obama and the First Lady stayed there too. Badass place, with parrots. Prior to my recent deep dive into this show, I had credited Sicario director Denis Villeneuve with the genius of that story. Visually, he's my favorite working director in the business today. I love the overhead shots and sweeping vistas. The story presents an insider knowledge of drug cartels or at least believable fiction. For some reason, I never had a reason to look at who wrote the story I found so compelling. Sheridan's career is vast, including Oscar nominations for 2016's Hell or High Water. You can be your whole bunkhouse paycheck that I will be seeing that one soon. This guy is amazing and I wish the expanded Yellowstone universe with 1883 and 6666 all the success in the world. Amazing cast, writing, action over all of these projects. Actors go to Cowboy Camp. The production films on location. Accuracy is matched with the beauty and sweeping landscapes of The West. I'm not sure why you are not watching Yellowstone yet. I'm already planning a Montana vacation. Last week, we lost one of the heroes of Grunge. So many are gone now. Rest in Peace, Mark Lanegan. Here's Mark with Layne playing “Long Gone Day” with Mad Season. Here's Mark with PJ Harvey “Hit The City”. So much loss and it especially hurts when it's someone struggling with sobriety (not that this was his cause of death, that has yet to be revealed and he was sick recently). An interesting display of the exact value that Emily Blunt and Denis Villaneuve each bring to a film.
Intro - Roger drank 21 beers in a day, power move. It's so hot. People who leave kids are animals in cars with windows up are cruel. Chris's 6 year old a softball savant? Is it okay to laugh at kids playing sports? Yes, yes it is. Roger's tells one of the greatest stories ever about a movie theater employee and a hot dog. 0:08:50 - Box-office, upcoming releases 0:15:40 **NEW EGMENT** What's Streaming? DISNEY+ MOANA, Dir. Ron Clements, John Musker, Don Hall – Auli’I Cravalho, The Rock, Temuera Morrison. 2016 THE ROCKETEER, Dir. Joe Johnston – Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, Paul Sorvino, Terry O’Quinn, Ed Lauter. 1991 THE INCREDIBLES, Dir. Brad Bird – Craig T Nelson, Samuel L Jackson, Holly Hunter, Jason Lee. 2004 0:22:25 - Trailers - THE GREEN KNIGHT, THE ICE ROAD and SNAKE EYES 0:38:00 - THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD, Dir. Taylor Sheridan 1:09:20 - SPIRAL, Dir. Chris Rock Those Who Wish Me Dead Taylor Sheridan is a name to follow. Hell or High Water. Wind River. Sicario. Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Those films should ring bells for you and for good reasons. They're fantastic. Wind River being 10/10 easy if not more. Cut to Those Who Wish Me Dead. A Slow burn in a 99 minute shell. A man and his family become targeted for assassination and when they are attacked on the open road, his son escapes into the forest only to run into a woman on fire watch while still being chased by two government trained assassins. Good cast and solid performances by people who do well in their respective rolls. Angelina isn't a show stopper but pretty good. Aidan Gillen and Nicholas Hoult and Jon Bernthall are also great with Finn Little as a newcomer also holding his own. A solid movie. Available theatrically or HBOMax. (5.5/10) Spiral 2004. Saw started a absolute legacy of horror turn torcher gore films to come. Two really great ones and five below average ones with a rogue "Jigsaw" movie and the more recent "Spiral" movies. That said, Jigsaw is dead and was only alive for 3 of the original 7 films, yet made an appearance in all of them. Jigsaw (Saw 2004) was brilliant. As Saw went on, Jigsaw became less so, forced and spoon-fed as exposition. Spiral is a step in the right direction for a Saw revival franchise. Much of the original atmosphere is kept intact along with much of what made Saw, Saw. The voice is not the same, nor is the mascot but both effective and menacing when put together. If you're a Saw fan, Spiral is for you. (4,10),(6/10) Hosted, produced and mixed by Grayson Maxwell and Roger Stillion. Guest appearance by Chris Bourghan. Music by Chad Wall. 欢迎收听第191期大话说电影, 本周老章和包子要聊的是一部由汤姆·克兰西 Tom Clancy同名小说改编的电影:冷血悍将 Without Remorse。 导演: 斯特法诺·索利马 Stefano Sollima (边境杀手2:边境战士 Sicario: Day of the Soldado), 编剧:泰勒·谢里丹 Taylor Sheridan (猎凶风河谷 Wind River, 赴汤蹈火 Hell or High Water, 边境杀手 Sicario 1&2),主演: 迈克尔·B·乔丹 Michael B. Jordan, 朱迪·特纳-史密斯 Jodie Turner-Smith,杰米·贝尔 Jamie Bell, 盖·皮尔斯 Guy Pearce。

This week we talk about 'Sicario: Day of the Soldado', a film that had the impossible task of living up to Denis Villeneuve's unimpeachable 'Sicario'. Does the film hold its own? Or does it crack under pressure?
Erik Messerschmidt, ASC believes that cinematographers get too much credit for how a movie looks and not enough for how the story is told. When you break a scene apart and assemble a sequence, the cinematographer has a huge part to play in the process of deciding when to move the camera, what lenses are used, how it flows and when it moves. Erik thinks when you look at it that way, cinematography has a lot more in common with editing rather than photography. Erik's most recent project, Mank- which is currently streaming on Netflix- was shot entirely in black and white. The look was the result of lots of conversations with director David Fincher. They both had a clear idea of what they wanted it to look like and also exactly what they did not want- too much heavy handed, contrast-heavy black and white cinematography in a film-noir style would take the viewers out of the experience, so it needed a lighter touch. Erik used fine art photography from the '30's to the mid '40's as a reference, and he and David Fincher wanted an homage to Citizen Kane without it actually looking like the film. Fincher was clear that he wished to transport the audience so they would lose their awareness of watching a black and white movie, and feel as though they are in the world of Herman J. Mankiewicz as he writes the script for Citizen Kane in the 1940's. Erik has worked with director David Fincher on several projects, first working as a gaffer on Gone Girl, then moving into the camera department on the series Mindhunter. Erik and David have become very close collaborators, and he enjoys working with him. Fincher likes a sense of hyper reality to his movies, and Erik sees it as his job as the cinematographer to learn what the director responds to, figure out how best to support their process and bring something to the party. Before moving into the camera department, Erik worked for several years as a gaffer. After working with David Fincher on two seasons of Mindhunter, Erik needed more work since he was a newly minted director of photography. He got the opportunity to shoot second unit on Sicario: Day of the Soledado with cinematographer Dariusz Wolski as the lead DP. He then worked on a few episodes of the TV series Legion with producer/director Noah Hawley and DP-turned-director Dana Gonzales, which was visually fun to work on. Legion's look was whimsical yet dark, as it explored the main character's mental illness and possible superpowers. He had the opportunity to work with Dana again on the finale of season four of Fargo. Erik also shot several episodes of the Ridley Scott series, Raised By Wolves, splitting the series with DP Ross Emery. Mank is available to watch right now on Netflix.
