Psychologist Felicia Huppert from Sydney, was sometimes known as the Professor of Happiness at Cambridge. On her recent death a celebration of her global influence was held by colleagues and family at the Bondi Pavillion in Sydney.
The great French actress Isabelle Huppert is a mainstay at many international festivals, but seeing her grace the screens at Sundance in Park City, Utah was a uniquely pleasant surprise. Huppert stars in LUZ, the second feature from Hong Kong director Flora Lau, which premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at this year's edition. The film follows two characters who turn to virtual reality to attempt to reconnect with estranged loved ones. One of them is a reformed gangster in Chongqing trying to find his daughter who was taken away from him years ago; the other is a Hong Kong gallery owner who goes to Paris to visit her stepmother (played by Huppert) who is facing a terminal diagnosis. Huppert carries the role with her typical combination of flair and subtlety, portraying a woman who faces mortality with quiet, even irreverent self-assuredness. Last week, Film Comment Editor Devika Girish chatted with Huppert about how she came to be a part of LUZ, what it's like to communicate across language barriers on and off-screen, and how Apichatpong Weerasethakul introduced her to virtual reality. A beloved Twin Cities broadcast journalist has been telling people's stories, thousands of them, over his long career. It's been tough telling his own story, which has taken another twist. Boyd Huppert, of KARE 11, has been living with an uncommon kind of blood cancer, multiple myeloma, and was in remission following a successful bone marrow transplant in 2022. Things were looking good, Huppert was feeling good. He welcomed his first grandchild and was traveling. Earlier this year, Huppert went for a checkup and his doctor found that the cancer has flared up. He is now getting ready to undergo a cutting-edge therapy, and while he undergoes tests and other preparations, he's gracious enough to have found the time to talk with MPR News host Cathy Wurzer.

In this one, Cody and co-host Aurora Ford talk to Heidi Huppert. Aurora is a former journalist and currently works at Covenant House Alaska; Heidi is the Chief Program Officer at Covenant House. Heidi's perspective on homelessness in Alaska is unique because, in her younger years, she spent time on the streets of Anchorage. Her mom had a violent and abusive boyfriend and Heidi didn't feel safe at home. So, one night after an especially brutal domestic situation, she found herself wandering around Spenard, trying to figure out what she was gonna do. She was about 12 years old and she had school in the morning. Because it was open and because it was familiar, she ended up just hanging out at McDonald's. She says that, for a long time, she didn't tell her story. It was just too hard to relive those memories, and the violence and the pain that came with them. But right now, she's at a point in her life where she sees how much power and strength there is in telling her story. How it can potentially help a young person understand that they might be in the middle of the worst moment or moments of their life, but it won't last forever. Things can get better. Heidi says that the issues of homelessness and human trafficking — another issue that she deals with a lot at work — are ones that we have to care about because they involve young people and they are the future of Alaska. They will one day hold the political, economic and social power. So, if we want our state to be healthy, we have to care about what is happening to our young people.

Gavia is joined by guest-host Claire Biddles to discuss Michael Haneke's 2001 erotic psychodrama The Piano Teacher, starring Isabelle as a Viennese piano teacher who embarks on a toxic sadomasochistic affair with one of her students. We delved into Huppert's performance and career, the film's costuming and music choices, the depiction of poorly-negotiated kink, and Haneke's unique brand of intense drama.
Michael Haneke wrote and directed "The Piano Teacher" with precision and brutal honesty. It's about a woman who is living through being a total lie. She takes life to other people and sadly to herself but there are reasons for it. It's a film about control. Do we have the control? How easy is it for one to slip? I loved the film for the complexity of the characters that carry this film through the tensions. The writing is great and Haneke is also great and character displaying the shots he chose as well. I also talk about how deep the character Erika is gloriously acted by Isabelle Huppert. She is the GOAT and she shows it in this film. It can't get better than that.Four out of four tokes.#thepianoteacher #michaelhaneke #filmreview

Breastfeeding can be challenging, but help is available for new mothers. Lactation consultants, either at the hospital or through organizations like La Leche League, can help with learning the positions that work best mom and baby, and offer tips that can help with learning this new skill of breastfeeding. While breastfeeding benefits for the baby are well-known, the mother also benefits."It's definitely a great healthy choice for moms to breastfeed," explains Rebekah Huppert, a lactation consultant and nurse at Mayo Clinic. "We know that with breastfeeding, we see a reduction in mom's risk for cancer, primarily breast and ovarian cancer; we see a reduced risk for diabetes; and a reduced risk for cardiovascular issues later in life. It can help reduce bleeding right after delivery by causing some contractions of the uterus. Evidence that shows that breastfeeding helps with weight loss, as well. It just takes a lot of calories to make breast milk, so we burn through those quickly when we're lactating. Those are just a few of the benefits, but they're big ones for moms."The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding of infants for the first six months of life before introducing nutritious complementary foods. The organization also encourages social and systemic changes to support mothers who choose to breastfeed. This summer, the American Academy of Pediatrics released new recommendations supporting mothers to continue breastfeeding for two years or beyond. These recommendations align with guidelines provided by the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Huppert advises women to not feel undue pressure with these new guidelines."It's a sensitive topic for women, especially those who want to do more and find that their body isn't cooperating or sometimes their job isn't accommodating," says Huppert. "So it is important to make sure that moms know that there are multiple ways we nourish our babies. We nourish them by holding them, and by talking to them and reading to them. It isn't just food. And at the end of the day, maternal health — having a mom who is happy and healthy — is going to be the most important thing for a child's growth and development." On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Ask the Mayo Mom host Dr. Angela Mattke, a Mayo Clinic pediatrician, is joined by Mayo Clinic Children's Center lactation expert Rebekah Huppert to discuss practical approaches to breastfeeding.
