Today we talk with Hayden Thorpe about Orford Ness, about the power of place, about, nature, rewilding and the creation of Hayden's new lp Ness. Hayden Thorpe is the Cumbrian solo artist, formerly of Wild Beasts. Using a process of redaction, Thorpe brings songs to life from the pages of best-selling author Robert Macfarlane's book of the same name. Ness is inspired by Suffolk's Orford Ness, the former Ministry of Defence weapons development site during both World Wars and the Cold War. Acquired by the National Trust in 1993 and left to re-wild, it to this day remains a place of paradox, mystery and constant evolution.

In this episode, we get to meet Hayden Thorpe. Hayden is a singer/songwriter from the UK, who is probably best known for his band Wild Beasts. Although they disbanded a few years ago, Hayden has been working hard within a solo sphere, and has just put out his third record, NESS, which is based upon a book by Robert Macfarlane, which itself is about the very real place of Orford Ness, a defunct military test side island off the coast of the UK. In this chat, Hayden and I discuss the conception, musicality, and production of Ness the album, but also go deep into the place it's inspired by - including the tamed and untamed wilderness there, the confluence of past and present. We talk what it was like relinquishing lyrical control, as almost all the lyrics are taken straight from Macfarlane's book. We also touch on Wild Beasts (a band I love) and what it was like working with them for so long and carving out their very distinct identity, and then having it come to a close. Thank you for listening.

In Wild Beasts pt 4, Paul meets with his friends in Ephesus one last time, before he moves on to his final assignment.
In Wild Beasts pt 3, we see where 2 things stirred up trouble in Ephesus that led to a riot, and Paul ending his time there. Along the way we see that every fight can't be MY FIGHT.
Why “normal” is ok and supernatural isn't always unusual……In Wild Beasts pt 2, we look at the unusual things God did through Paul's work in Ephesus and discover that “unusual” and “extreme” isn't actually the goal. What we need to be is EFFECTUAL.
Battles are a part of life and for followers of Jesus we WIN. But just because we win doesn't mean we don't feel the miles from the fight. In part 1 of this message series we see from Paul's time in Ephesus how God prepared him to fight those “WILD BEASTS”.

February 18, 2024 - With The Wild Beasts - Rev. Austin Carty by Boulevard Baptist Church
A sermon for the First Sunday in Lent, based on Mark 1:9-15. Mark 1:9-15 Music: "Reflections" by Wild Wonder
Sermon on the First Sunday in Lent, February 18, 2024 by the Rev. Dr. John Henson. Mark 1:9-15.
Gospel for the First Sunday in Lent - Mark 1:12-15Jesus, having just been baptized in the Jordan River, is driven by the Spirit into the desert, to spend 40 days attempting to discern what it means to be the Beloved Son and what that calls Him to. And so we enter this same period - 40 days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. 40 days set aside to listen to the same Spirit, driving us and moving us in that same mission. But do we allow ourselves the silence to be able to hear?Special thanks to Bridget Zenk for her composition and performing of our intake and outtake music. And thank you to you for breaking open God's Word along with me. I'm humbled and honored. Gospel Reflection–Sr Katherine Stone MGL–Wilderness and Wild Beasts (Sr Katherine Stone says that the 40 days of Lent can seem like a long, bleak stretch of time. It makes us wonder why the Spirit would take Jesus out to spend 40 days in the wilderness. The wilderness (or desert) has traditionally been a place of encounter with God. For millennia, men and women of prayer have taken themselves into the desert to be rid of all distraction and encounter the living God. Each Lent, we, too, follow the Holy Spirit into our own experience of “wilderness”. However, in the wilderness we're prey to temptation, which is ultimately trying to get us to settle for less than what we had set out for. While in the wilderness, like Jesus, we too discover the wild beasts. They're living in us all of the time, but they tend to behave in a more civilized manner when we feed them with regular coffee and take the edge off their appetites with alcohol or Netflix. But without those distractions, we see more of our inner wild beasts in their natural ferocity: our laziness, impatience, quick temper. It is only when we let go of our distractions and face our weaknesses and struggles that we can experience God's compassion. Rather than giving all our attention to our temptations and the wild beasts inside, let's choose to recognise where we have encountered God's saving compassion.)
Evagrius Ponticus (345-399 CE) was an expert of the inner life and today host Lisa Colon DeLay reads from Fr. Gabriel Bunge's book to learn what Evagrius meant by "Dragon's Wine and Angel's Bread".

In this thought-provoking episode of "Your Life," Dr. Tony Haire and Dan DeBruler delve deep into the spiritual significance of the tongue and the power of our words.Drawing from the teachings of James 3:6 and the wisdom of Jesus, they explore the dual nature of the tongue, which can both bless and destroy. While man has tamed the fiercest of beasts, the tongue remains a challenge, reflecting our inner spiritual battles. However, with the guiding power of the Holy Spirit, it's possible to harness this force for good. The duo emphasizes the importance of pausing, reflecting, and choosing words that bring light and life. As they navigate the challenges of living the Christian life, listeners are reminded of the weight of their words and the potential consequences they carry. Join them on this spiritual journey, understanding the profound impact of our speech and the path to mastering it.
Real gods require no faith, they just are: expressed in the life force of the pronghorn herd racing across the High Desert, the mountain lion traveling hundreds of miles as master of its environment, the invigorating violence of a summer thunderstorm, the lightning strike of a rattler upon its prey, the mourning dove pair bringing up each of their dozen offspring with the same determination and patience and love, one after another, all summer long.Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/desertoracleSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

3 on a Meathook (1972), Grizzly (1976), & Day of the Animals (1977). Director William Girdler is a name that some horror fans might know some of his work, but probably don't know a lot about the man himself, or maybe don't realize how many great films he produced in a very short time, before his untimely death. 9 movies in only 6 years, and one of them being the most successful independent film for the time, which head that record until John Carpenter's Halloween (1978). In this episode we cover one of his earlier films, as well as two of his most popular ones, or ones that might be more familiar with your average fan. But we invite you to listen up and even rewatch them and see if you don't agree with us that William Girdler was much more than a low budget independent filmmaker, but one that consentantly turned out entertaining picutres. Titles mentioned in this episode: 3 on a Meathook (1972), Abby (1974), The Adventures of the Wilderness Family (1975), Airplane (1980), Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Asylum of Satan (1972), Day of the Animals (1977), Evils of the Night (1985), The Exorcist (1973), Gator (1976), Grizzly (1976), Jaws (1975), Halloween (1978), Laserblast (1979), Last Shark (1981), Mako: Jaws of Death (1976), The Manitou (1978), Orca (1977), Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), Roar (1981), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), Tentacles (1977), A Thing with Two Heads (1972), Tintorera: Killer Shark (1977), A Touch of Satan (1971), Wild Beasts (1984), Zebra Killer (1974)

We had the pleasure of interviewing Dave Rowntree over Zoom video!Dave Rowntree is pleased to share the new single "TAPE MEASURE" from his debut album, Radio Songs which was released on January 20, 2023 through Cooking Vinyl."Tape Measure" is streaming now. It's a song that dips into the melting pot of sound that the Blur drummer accumulates from his passion for dipping in and out of radio stations the world over and landing on the distinctive sound of a Bollywood soundtrack that Dave splices together with a clipped beat. It's a colorful tune, all rhythm and melody.Dave Rowntree on "Tape Measure":“Anxiety - an unpleasant emotion of inner turmoil and dread. We're fundamentally herd animals, whose main defensive tactic is running away and hiding. We've no sharp claws or teeth to fight with. So we're over sensitized to danger. We see shapes in the shadows, faces in the fire. Disaster always lurks on the grey edges of our consciousness. On the upside, come the zombie apocalypse, we anxious people will already be in hiding, leaving all you smug normies to have your brains eaten.”Radio Songs was produced by Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Wild Beasts, Ghostpoet). We want to hear from you! Cheerio.

ANOHNI, Hannah Peel, Hayden Thorpe and Purity Ring's Megan James discuss questions including what their music might sound like in an alternate universe. Hayden Thorpe is the frontman from the now disbanded Wild Beasts, and has moved to the north of England where his solo albums are inspired by the nature that surrounds him. UK-born singer, songwriter, and visual artist ANOHNI has had an eclectic career as a solo artist and as a member of the Mercury Prize-winning Antony and the Johnsons. She's also been nominated for an Academy Award, and creates thought-provoking music that ask questions of those in power, gender imbalances, and climate change. Megan James is a member the duo Purity Ring. Formed in Edmonton, Canada, they are known for their crystal clear synth sounds, hypnotic melodies, and corporeal, metaphorical lyrics. Hannah Peel is a composer, producer, and radio broadcaster born in Northern Ireland and raised in the North of England. Her music explores electronic, classical, and traditional sounds, and is often inspired by science and nature.
The importance of the movie poster is almost lost in this day and age. With the internet flooding social media with trailers, photos, and all sorts of advertisements, the poster art might get lost in the shuffle. But decades ago, it was the first thing used to promote an upcoming feature film. It had to reach out and grab hold of your eyes, telling your brain you need to see this film. Shortly after that, the poster collecting started. Why do we collect posters? What kinds are there? What is it about it that still holds a spell over movie goers? Join us and our special guest, Alan Tromp, as we try to answer all of those questions and more, as we discuss our own obsessions with movie posters, from one-sheets to British Quads to the French Grande size! Hayden Thorpe is a solo artist and former frontman of Wild Beasts. His two solo albums — Moondust for my Diamond (2021) and Diviner (2019) — follow five albums with the band between 2008 and 2016, for which Two Dancers was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Since discovering Wild Beasts through their album Smother in 2011, they've remained my favourite band, one I've returned to time and time again, the soundtrack struggle, triumph, and everything between. Hayden's music continues the theme. Songs such as Diviner, Golden Ratio, The Universe is Alright Right, translate the ineffable with poetic melodies and spiritually-infused lyricism. Sharing such an in-depth exploration of Hayden's creative process was a joy. Topics include the transcendence of writing, the sacred nature of music, the energetics of stage performance, the merging of self and the source, the mystery of how certain songs find you at the right place, right time, shaping your life direction. In tribute to Hayden's approach to the divine and the earthly, we discuss the vulnerability of crises of confidence, risk-taking, the desire for validation, and how to honour ideas. Plus, we consider what immersion in the creative dimension teaches about the nature of reality, and the cosmic link between Newcastle United and Bristol Rovers.
This week, we speak to Leo Abrahams. Leo is a musician, composer and producer. Although classically trained, he left behind a degree in composition at the royal academy to play guitar for Imogen Heap, and later, Ed Harcourt as part of their touring bands. A chance encounter with production legend Brian Eno led to him assisting on a variety of projects, often helping to ‘finish' the myriad of releases Brian would be working across. This led to him taking on more production roles and Leo has since built a fascinating C.V. that includes Frightened Rabbit, Wild Beasts, Katie Melua and Paolo Nutini. From his newly completed studio in east London he now divides his time between film and TV composition, session guitar work, solo albums, and of course, his production work. And it's here we joined him to hear the story of his new studio, his serendipitous meeting with Mr Eno and what it's like touring Siberia with a coach full of free jazz musicians… The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London.
