This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Released in 1999, the film Magnolia was film written, directed and co-produced by Paul Thomas Anderson. The movie is an epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of happiness, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley. The script was inspired by the music of Aimee Mann, who contributed several songs to its soundtrack.Anderson met Aimee Mann in 1996 when he asked her husband, Michael Penn, to write the score and songs for his film, Hard Eight. Mann's songs had been featured on soundtracks before but only incidentally. Anderson encouraged her to write songs for the film by sending her a copy of the script. The soundtrack album, released on Reprise Records, features Mann's songs, as well as a section of Jon Brion's score together with tracks by Supertramp and Gabrielle. Reprise released a full score album in 2000.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Patreon Justin has picked some gems and corkers before, like Blood Simple and Hard Eight, and this time he's chosen the little known 1992 comedy, Brain Donors."Brain Donors" was produced during a time when Hollywood was revisiting and paying homage to classic comedy styles, and its production was heavily influenced by the desire to recreate the Marx Brothers' iconic brand of humor. The film was written by Pat Proft, known for his work on the "Naked Gun" series, and produced by David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, the trio behind many successful comedies of the 1980s. Their involvement ensured that the film would be packed with rapid-fire jokes, slapstick, and absurdity, staying true to the spirit of the Marx Brothers while adding a modern twist. The project was initially conceived as a direct tribute to the Marx Brothers, with the working title "Lame Ducks," and the characters were loosely based on Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx.John Turturro, who played the Groucho-esque character Jacques, was a standout in the cast, bringing his unique energy and comedic timing to the role. The production faced challenges in balancing the homage to classic comedy with appealing to contemporary audiences, which led to mixed reactions upon its release. Despite its star-studded creative team and ambitious vision, the film struggled at the box office, partly due to limited marketing and the niche appeal of its humor. However, over time, "Brain Donors" has garnered a cult following, appreciated for its commitment to reviving the chaotic, irreverent spirit of the Marx Brothers. The making of the film reflects a passionate attempt to honor a bygone era of comedy, even if it didn't achieve mainstream success. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackPlot SummaryRoland T Flakfixer, Jacques and Rocco, a trio of eccentric misfits, are hired by the wealthy widow Lillian Oglethorpe to establish a ballet company in honor of her late husband. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 118 - Mark Bridges - Costume Designer In his podcast debut, costume designer Mark Bridges (THE FABELMANS, JOKER, PHANTOM THREAD) speaks with us on this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. Mark was once a costume assistant on BARTON FINK and HUDSUCKER PROXY alongside Mary Zophres (Season 1, Episode 80), and he shares how he made the jump to being a costume designer in his own right after meeting director Paul Thomas Anderson to work on his debut feature, HARD EIGHT. Throughout the episode, we discuss Mark's approach to his work, and he shares how he builds out a character's closet through diligent research and frequent testing. We also discuss how Mark communicates with the hair and makeup department, and he describes the types of conversations he has with the actors embodying a film's characters. Later, Mark discusses how he designs costumes in black-and-white, and he reflects on the extra legwork done to get ahead of any potential problems while shooting on location. And, while sharing advice at the end of the episode, Mark cautions young designers against making it about the money. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we gush (and hush) over Gwyneth Paltrow with our past, present, and future guest Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game and the ever-expanding My First Movie books! Our B-Sides today are: Flesh and Bone, Hard Eight, Hush, and Sliding Doors. The main focus revolves around her banner year of 1998. Paltrow had FIVE films released in ‘98, including Shakespeare in Love, which won her an Oscar. We talk about her superb SNL opening monologue from 1999 (and her cameo in Ben Affleck's monologue the next year), her deep cultural resonance at the time (some credit her for bringing the color pink back into fashion), the films she made before and after Emma, and her waning movie star era after the year 2000. Of the nearly fifty films in which she has appeared, there have been precious few since 2010 that were not Marvel movies. There was, of course, Mortdecai. And, perhaps most famously, her lifestyle company Goop. There's Hush's infamous test screenings and wig-heavy reshoots (years later, Jessica Lange called the film “a piece of shit”), Sliding Doors' haircuts and soundtrack, and Flesh and Bone's slow-cooked, well-worn dramatics. Also mentioned is that amazing Patrick Doyle score for Great Expectations, The Film Stage's Holiday Gift Guide, And then there's Duets and Gwyneth's hit cover song “Cruisin'” with Huey Lewis. This week we are once again fumbling our way to the end of a mystery as we're joined by our noir-comedy correspondent, as the great "Wild Eyes" Travis Woloshyn (Boom Pro Wrestling, Percy Jackson & The Olympians) returns to the program to talk a movie that is thematically linked to the last movie he was here to discuss. It's 2014's Inherent Vice, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson from the novel by Thomas Pynchon, and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Jena Malone, Hong Chau, Martin Short and Joanna Newsom. If it's not Anderson's funniest film it's certainly right up there, with two heavyweight comedy performances from Phoenix and Brolin, who are just as adept at character comedy as they are at broad slapstick. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our conversation, you may be out of luck! Inherent Vice is not currently streaming in Canada at the time of publication. You may however be able to find it in stock at your local library. Other works discussed on this episode include The Long Goodbye, Trap, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, Wrath of Man, The Usual Suspects, Fight Club, Don't Breathe, Gremlins, Batman ('89), Jurassic Park, Melvin and Howard, Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom, Twister, Twisters, Riverdale, The Big Lebowski, Mandy, Her, C'mon C'mon, You Were Never Really Here, Joker, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleeping With Other People, Alien: Covenant, Tenet, The Candidate, A Talking Cat?!, and other entries in the PTA ouevre like Phantom Thread, Punch-Drunk Love, Licorice Pizza, Magnolia, and Hard Eight. We'll be back next week to close out P.T.August with our monthly canon selection, as 1998's Boogie Nights is up for consideration this time. You can find that movie streaming in Canada on Crave, Starz and Hollywood Suite, so good luck to ya. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Hard Eight kicks off our Paul Thomas Anderson arc as we focus on his first feature length film, which very few people have seen. Boasting a stunning cast of many actors before they became famous, including John C. Reilly, Philip Baker Hall, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, the film delivers extraordinary performances. The movie was made on a small $3 million budget and therefore focuses on the dialogue and performances in intimate locations instead of extensive action. Hard Eight serves as a foundation for understanding PTA's oeuvre and we heartily recommend watching it before delving deeper into his catalogue.

Recorded in the dead of winter in a newly constructed studio at the former residence of controversial Edmonton photographer Con Boland, the month-long project was the result of what the sound might be if there was a collaboration between Elliott Smith and Massive Attack. Long gone are the bluesy-punk sounds of Sparrow's first band the Murder City Sparrows. Sparrow tells the story. “Eight records in fifteen years… Some came easy, others were a struggle. ‘Hard Eight' is a little of both. I fell in love and found the woman I am to marry since my last record came out in 2020. You can hear a little of what that sounds like in some of the songs. The act of writing music feels like sitting under an attic hatch far above your body, you close your eyes and the hatch opens, falling through the crack are particles of dusty creative moments, if I am positioned correctly with instrument in hand, they land on me, some I even reach out and catch. They aren't mine, I don't know where they come from but if I am ready and available, I can usher them into existence. I make music because I have to, the rest of life is elective." This week, we're closing out an unsuccessful hunt with a movie about a man with no name, no identity, no family, and no reason to really be too interested in him as the main character of a film. Yes, it's 1997's The Saint, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, and starring Val Kilmer, Elisabeth Shue, Rade Serbedzija, Henry Goodman, Alun Armstrong, Valeri Nikolaev, Charlotte Cornwell and Emily Mortimer. It's a movie that pairs up a man with no inner life and a woman with no self-esteem as our action-thriller romantic leads, and despite everything working against them in this script, Kilmer and Shue still manage to be quite charming. It's a merciful end to Come On Feel The Noyce, as we're finally done with Phil's films, going out on a movie that could very well make podcast history as the first film to be denied entry in its bid to join the ADHD-DVD canonical classics. Plus: we go deep on the annoying discourse that dominated the week, as Barbie is slighted by the Oscars by only being nominated for 8 including Best Picture, while Tenet finally gets granted a theatrical re-release, and previous pod fodder The Accountant has an unlikely sequel on the way. Other works discussed in this episode include I.S.S., Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography (particularly Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Licorice Pizza), and all the movies Oscar actually snubbed, like Past Lives, The Holdovers, Asteroid City, May-December, and The Iron Claw. Oh, and Men. Alex Garland's MEN. Coming up next month on the show, February Is For Lovers, and we will be treating it as such, as the four Fridays in Feb will see us cover Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, before a month full of romance ends with canon consideration of Leslye Headland's modern rom-com classic Sleeping With Other People. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 19 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello to discuss the next film in their Paul Thomas Anderson series, Boogie Nights (1996). By the time you are done watching Hard Eight, you can just feel that there was something wonderful just waiting to get out, and that was the sexy, wild comedy-drama that PTA made as his second feature. Set during the late 1970s, early 1980s in the San Fernando Valley, Boogie Nights falls the rise and fall of the porn industry through the eyes of a hot shot actor, his filmmaker mentor, and a cast of eccentric, heartbreaking characters that make up this broken family. Inspired by John C. Holmes, a real life porn star, and his own short from high school called The Dirk Diggler Story. Anderson through everything but the kitchen sink at the creation of his film, ruffling feathers with his cast, crew, audiences, and people in the industry. But in doing so, he created the first of his signature masterpieces, and a film that is an essential piece of filmmaking from the 1990s. Ryan, Jay, and Sophia breakdown what makes the film so special, if PTA's directorial influences get in the way of his creation, how is the MVP of this cast, if Leonardo DiCaprio would've made a good Dirk Diggler, and which character they identify with. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h59m. Ever wondered how a director can weave an intricate story with a star-studded cast, yet make you deeply invested in each character? That's the genius of Paul Thomas Anderson, and we talk all about it in this week's episode. Starting off with Anderson's debut feature film, Hard Eight, and moving on to the popular Boogie Nights, we break down the compelling performances and share our personal experiences of discovering Anderson's world. How can a movie over three hours long keep you engaged? Anderson achieves this with Magnolia, another masterpiece that we dissect, focusing on the heart-warming love story between John C. Riley and Melora Walters. We draw parallels to modern rom-coms like Valentine's Day and He's Just Not That Into You while appreciating Anderson's knack for creating a complex, interconnected narrative. Finally, we delve into Anderson's romantic comedy Punch Drunk Love, and scrutinize the duality of Adam Sandler's career, and his other cinematic gems like There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice. We discuss the brilliant performances by the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis and Joaquin Phoenix, and the unique visual language that Anderson employs. Join us for this scintillating journey through the works of one of Hollywood's most influential contemporary directors.Support the showPlease subscribe, rate, and review! Thank you for listening! On episode 18 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Ethan Warren, Senior editor at Bright Wall/Dark Room and author of The Cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson: American Apocrypha Ethan Warren, to discuss the first film in their Paul Thomas Anderson series, Hard Eight (1996). So begins a new series about a director that might not only be the best of his generation, but is a foundation filmmaker for both Ryan and Jay. But before he influenced them, a young PTA had to find his voice, and after breaking out with the short film Cigarettes & Coffee, he was given the chance to turn it into a feature film. In this somber directorial debut, Hard Eight follows an older gambler takes a younger, homeless kid (John C. Reilly) under his wing, and they do well making money, till they both meet a waitress (Gwyneth Paltrow) that will change their life, for better and for worse. Led a stellar performance from veteran actor Philip Baker Hall, Ryan, Jay and guest Ethan talk about the legacy of Anderson's debut, if he wears his influences too much on his sleeve, how this movie lead to Boogie Nights, the final shot of the film, and read an interesting review for Ethan's fantastic book. On episode 17 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the last film in their Lynne Ramsay series, You Were Never Really Here (2018). In her fourth film of her career, Ramsay seemed to change direction back to the style of films she was making before We Need to Talk About Kevin, and strip everything back to a singular focus and tone rather than grander ideas. In doing so, she collaborated with one of Hollywood's most in demand actors, Joaquin Phoenix, to create a violent, tight neo-noir crime thriller about a mercenary haunted by his past, who is hired to rescue a politician's daughter who was kidnapped by a human trafficking network. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017, Ramsay and Phoenix would go on to win prizes for her screenplay and his fully committed performance as Joe, some of the best work of his celebrated career. Ryan and Jay break down the film, speak briefly about Phoenix's filmography, the film's beautiful yet haunting ending, Jonny Greenwood's subtle score, and give out their rankings of Lynne Ramsay's small but fascinating body of work. On this special Bonus Episode of The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas reignite the rivalry, and once again ask the ultimate question, "Are you an Anderson Guy, or an Anderson Guy?"That's right! With a new Wes Anderson film now out, Anderson vs. Anderson is back, with the 11th feature from the visionary director – ASTEROID CITY. Once again, we've got an ensemble cast, with Jason Schwartzman leading the charge, alongside Wes Anderson regulars, Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, Adrian Brody, Liev Schreiber, Jeffery Wright, Tony Revolori, Bob Balaban, Bryan Cranston, Tilda Swinton and Jeff Goldblum. Plus, we see the additions of Margot Robbie, Matt Dillon, Maya Hawke, Hong Chau, Steve Carell, and Tom "freaking" Hanks to the cast of characters in the idiosyncratic director's first foray into sci-fi.Full of all the camera tricks and movements, centre framed shots, visual effects, pastel colours, unique wardrobe, stunning set design, whimsical music and stories, stop-motion, swapping between colour and black and white, and the new addition of a play set within a movie – it's probably the most Wes Anderson Wes Anderson movie yet! But is that a good thing?Join us, as we once again crack into the Twee world of Wes Anderson for his latest delights! And just maybe, in the near future, we will finally dip our toes into Paul Thomas Anderson's first film, HARD EIGHT, because we never did it in the original run, and the director doesn't seem to have anything new in store for us any time soon.If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! Returning to the podcast this week for the first time since I chatted with him and other wonderful writer-editors of the online film journal BW/DR (Bright Wall/Dark Room) about their favorite comfort movies a few seasons back, we have Ethan Warren.A member of the Boston Society of Film Critics who holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of North Carolina - Wilmington, plus the writer-director of the film WEST OF HER, Ethan stopped by to give us the inside scoop on his rich, fascinating new cinema studies book for Columbia University Press. Part of the publisher's Directors Cuts series which focuses on the work of the most significant contemporary international filmmakers, Ethan Warren's outstanding work entitled "The Cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson: American Apocrypha" is now available and I highly recommend you check it out.Having just recorded my own contributions on Paul Thomas Anderson's SYDNEY aka HARD EIGHT for the tie-in Pod Thomas Anderson podcast that Ethan collaborated on with One Heat Minute Productions and Blake Howard, I opted to have Ethan join me to chat about Anderson's two collaborations with the great actor Daniel Day-Lewis. Opening the episode with an appreciation of Anderson's work, including stories of seeing his films in the theater and our evolving relationship with them, plus more information about the author's book and writing process, the second half of this roughly hour-long conversation zeroes in on THERE WILL BE BLOOD and PHANTOM THREAD.Note: This will be the last new installment of the podcast for roughly a month, as I'm giving myself a little time to recharge ahead of our upcoming 200th episode. Rest assured, I'll be sharing recommendations and other surprises on our Patreon next month and will also continue working on shows behind the scenes but am giving myself a little break to heal from an injury and creating a cushion of episodes in case I travel, anything unforeseen arrives, or life gets busier.
