Research, equipment, and protocols are the three things that differentiate this method of blood flow restriction training from the others… My guest this week is Steven Munatones, CEO & Co-founder of KAATSU Global, Inc. In this episode, Steven and I discuss how KAATSU differs from other blood flow restriction products, how KAATSU can be effective for pain management, and the benefits of using KAATSU to increase athletic performance. We also get a little deeper into some of the protocols, and discuss different use cases. Steven Munatones has launched new products, services and technologies in the U.S. over the last 20 years. At TOTO Frontier, he licensed TOTO's sanitary ware technologies outside of Japan. At RealLiveSports, he designed and marketed the ESPN Play by Play, a 2006 Toy of the Year. At Aruze Gaming America, he launched hybrid slot machine reel technology in the gaming industry. At the World Open Water Swimming Association, he utilized 9 years of national team coaching to help shape and promote the new Olympic sport of marathon swimming. The Harvard graduate and certified KAATSU Master Instructor co-founded KAATSU Global with Dr. Sato, the Japanese inventor of KAATSU, to introduce next-generation KAATSU equipment. What we discuss: 00:01:02 The distinction between KAATSU and other blood flow restriction products 00:07:53 The origins of KAATSU 00:11:47 The body's hormonal response to blood flow restriction 00:19:21 How KAATSU is supporting brain health 00:22:22 Why amputees can benefit from using KAATSU 00:32:07 Using KAATSU to manage arthritis and joint pain 00:40:48 The benefits of using KAATSU for athletic performance 00:58:57 How KAATSU can help build muscle mass 01:03:04 The best place for people to go for different types of protocols Key Takeaways: KATSUU is a Japanese word made out of two characters: “additional” and “pressure”. While we refer to these devices as “blood flow restriction” devices, the goal of KAATSU is to provide additional pressure to allow blood to flow into the small areas in your capillaries normally, and then slow it down temporarily. There are several different ways you can use KAATSU to improve performance, including using it for warm up, for peak performance, in the cyclical mode, and in the constant mode. Each of those applications has a different impact on your physiology. Since most of the hormonal release of the human body happens while we're asleep, using a very light application of KAATSU can help you fall into REM sleep quicker, and can keep you there longer. Alcohol is an area of life where you can really drift if you don't bring some intentionality to it. So in the first episode we interviewed Pete Sousa, a TV News Anchor and ESPN Play by Play Sports analyst who hit rock bottom through alcohol abuse, entered AA and had to rebuild his life in his early 30s. That was a look into the extreme and devastating effects of addictive alcohol abuse. And even though Bryan and I never had an addictive relationship with alcohol, through Pete's story we could sure as hell see how we'd used booze to mask insecurities, numb fears and quite frankly…just fit in. But I've been alcohol free for about 6 years now, and I'm never going back. There was never a moment where I declared I'm not drinking anymore. Alcohol just faded out of my life the more and more intentional I got, and the less and less alcohol aligned with where I was going. Bryan still drinks socially, albeit far less regularly than he did even just a few years ago. In this Episode What an alcohol free life could feel like The friction you may experience when curtailing your drinking The relationships that may change as a result How to build a vibrant and fun social life without the social lubrication The impact on your body of going alcohol free
