#. 331 In the finale of The Great Man Within podcast, I give you my most vulnerable gift: An intense 85-minute audio recording of me and my coach (David Waldas) during one of the most raw and exposed moments of my life: Friday, December 23rd, 2022 (just 3 days before this episode aired). I open up about a terrifying panic attack, fear of death, feelings of despair about my health situation and a humbling admission of how far I feel right now from the “greatness” I've set out to achieve. You're getting the 100% unfiltered and unprecedented fly-on-the-wall access to the deepest parts of me… …because this recording was never meant to be shared publicly (David records all of our coaching sessions). But something tells me this look into my life, will make a meaningful difference in at least one of yours. It's my most special, vulnerable, and final gift to you… …as we bring to an end, The Great Man Within Podcast. -DQ To Stay Connected to the Community and Dominick:   Get free daily texts on Purpose, Personal Leadership & Masculinity Click Here (once you click the link, press “send” to text the keyword to me to get the daily texts)   Follow Dominick on Instagram: @DominickQ   To Email Me: Dominick@DominickQ.com   Join the Facebook Group for Men: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheGreatManWithin   -----------------------------------------------------------------------------   Great Man Within Spotify Playlists  Our Top 10 Most Downloaded Episodes of All Time Our Top 6 Most Downloaded Episodes of 2021 Our Top 10 Most Downloaded Masculinity Episodes The “New Listeners Start Here” Playlist Great Man Within Episodes for Women Bryan's Favorite Episodes   -----------------------------------------------------------------------------   David Waldas Website: https://davidaronwaldas.com/

Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm are two great examples of this – two shows famously about nothing (the trivialities of life), yet turned into art that makes us laugh and relate. None of this [podcast] constitutes medical advice or should be construed as a recommendation to use psychedelics. There are serious legal, psychological, and physical risks. Psychedelics are not for everyone—they can exacerbate certain emotional problems, and there have been, in very rare cases, fatalities.  7 years ago, when I was first starting to get curious about psychedelics like Ayahuasca, mushrooms, MDMA and LSD…these medicines were very much underground and difficult to access unless you knew someone who knew someone who was in the underground world. I didn't even know anyone personally who'd done any psychedelics to talk to about their experiences.  It was also difficult to get access to legitimate resources to educate yourself on the dos, donts and dangers of psychedelic use so you could even determine whether it was right for you.  These days, psychedelics have become part of mainstream conversation. Tim Ferriss has become a prominent champion of responsible psychedelic use. Michael Pollan wrote a category breaking book called How to Change Your Mind, which is now a Netflix documentary series. And speaking of documentaries, there's been an explosion of those both on the major streaming platforms as well as on YouTube.  Now it seems like everyone is microdosing something these days.  So I thought it would be high time to have a conversation about why psychedelics have played such an important role in my personal growth. Bryan is sitting out this conversation today, and I've brought back my man, Keith Bracci, a semi-regular on this show and a brother I've journeyed with a number of times.  In this Episode: The 3 most important considerations for taking a safe, responsible psychedelic journey  Considerations you should make to determine if they are right for you. How 15 minutes of a profound psychedelic experience can impact the next 50 years of your life How psychadelics can shatter your ego in extremely scary, painful, and eventually empowering ways How a single medicine journey can heal decades of trauma How responsible journeying can bring back a sense of wonder, awe and childhood delight of the world around you into your life

What tools and practices are you intentionally employing on a consistent basis to develop mastery of your mind? To help you answer that question, we're going to be diving deep into one specific superpower of the brain: neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to change, reorganize and grow over time.  For that growth and change to happen on your own terms, you have to play an integral role. And to help teach you how to play that role masterfully, we have Ben Ahrens, co-founder of Re-Origin, an online brain training program to help people reclaim their health by rewiring their brain. In fact, Re-Origin is the program that I've been using to rewire my brain as I'm healing from Lyme Disease…a chronic illness that Ben knows even more intimately than I…as he spent 3 years bedridden with Lyme Disease…his body in a constant state of hypervigilant fight or flight response… …and the only way he could make his way back to full health, was to reclaim authority over a brain that had been hijacked by fear. I think that would only make sense, right? But as I continue to fail, I've also learned to fear failure less.
Which means, I go after 100% of what I want more and more often…and the victories get bigger. Now in our masterminds, I see men at earlier stages of their inner work journey, where fear of failure is still a major inhibitor for going after 100% of what they want in their life. One of the most common themes among men who join our masterminds is this experience of feeling life is good…but not great. They have this deeper sense of knowing that they're standing on the sidelines of the real games they want to be playing, but are too afraid of the consequences of failing in their pursuit. So in this episode, Bryan and I are going to take a deeper dive into the fear forces that keep you stuck and paralyzed from going after 100% of what you want.  In this episode: Bryan and I are going to share 4 of our Greatest Life lessons from failing big What the Stoics, Napoleon Hill and of course Walter White have to say about failure Why an ego shattered by failure is a beautifully liberating moment Why having a brotherhood allows you to fail bigger (and ultimately, win bigger) The 4 Life Lessons #1. Failure gives you the experience that you can get back up. #2. Failure will either strengthen or shatter your ego. #3. Failing hurts a lot less when you're in integrity #4. Brotherhood allows you to fail bigger.

It's rarely due to a lack of trying. It's certainly not due to a lack of thinking. It's due to lack of awareness of the wounds they've endured much earlier in life that caused a shut down of essential parts of their inner world.  Think of it as trying to drive cross country when every major freeway and interstate is barricaded. Its really hard to get where you're trying to go. In this episode, we're going to be exploring 3 common masculine wounds that serve as the barricades to you getting where you want to go.  And by exploring them, and ultimately removing them, you'll be in the fast lane to your destination.  The 3 Common Masculine Wounds: Your emotions weren't welcome Your differences weren't accepted You were taught to abandon your inner compass

We've all got a little victim mentality in us.  We've all got at least one area of life where we struggle, and not getting the results we want.  Maybe you see others making more money than you. Maybe you see others more successful in love and romance. Maybe you see other guys have the body that you wish you had.  When we're not getting what we want, its tempting to indulge in the idea the game is rigged against us…and that's why we're not winning.  Now that's not to say you don't have it harder than others in certain aspects of your life.  We're all born into different circumstances where things like money, race, physical appearance, sexual orientation and whether you grew up in a loving or broken home create uneven playing fields. And then we have different life experiences where we collect a lot of evidence as to whether the wind is at your sails, or if you're running with a parachute attached to your back.  So yes, we are all starting from different places, but we don't have to stay stuck there. As Viktor Frankl says: “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” In other words, you have the choice to remain a victim to your circumstances – or to adopt the mindset of a victor.  In this Episode: Why being a victim feels good sometimes Why you shouldn't pay attention to the evidence  Why motivation isn't enough to change…and why self-efficacy is your golden ticket What Episodic Future Thinking is…and why 5,000 peer reviewed studies show it's the #1 practice to develop a sense of self efficacy  A 3 step process from shifting from Victim to Victor mindset

Alcohol is an area of life where you can really drift if you don't bring some intentionality to it. So in the first episode we interviewed Pete Sousa, a TV News Anchor and ESPN Play by Play Sports analyst who hit rock bottom through alcohol abuse, entered AA and had to rebuild his life in his early 30s. That was a look into the extreme and devastating effects of addictive alcohol abuse. And even though Bryan and I never had an addictive relationship with alcohol, through Pete's story we could sure as hell see how we'd used booze to mask insecurities, numb fears and quite frankly…just fit in. But I've been alcohol free for about 6 years now, and I'm never going back. There was never a moment where I declared I'm not drinking anymore. Alcohol just faded out of my life the more and more intentional I got, and the less and less alcohol aligned with where I was going. Bryan still drinks socially, albeit far less regularly than he did even just a few years ago. In this Episode What an alcohol free life could feel like The friction you may experience when curtailing your drinking The relationships that may change as a result How to build a vibrant and fun social life without the social lubrication The impact on your body of going alcohol free

Today we're talking about Kava. Kava is a legal plant medicine that has been drunk for centuries by the people in the Pacific Islands (places like FIJI, Tonga and Papua New Guinea) to enjoy states of relaxed, calm, clear mindedness. Many Islanders will drink Kava in place of coffee or alcohol. Kava is starting to gain recognition here in the states for elevating mood, enhancing quality sleep and also increasingly used as an alternative to alcohol. Kava's biggest claim to fame is it reduces anxiety. For someone like me, who runs anxious, that's appealing. Kava's also been known to enhance mental focus and creativity. I've been using Kava since December of 2021 before bed to enhance my deep sleep. But as you'll hear today, not all Kava is created equal. There's a lot of crap Kava out there, and you need to know how to avoid the crap and hone in on the good stuff. It's the same thing with coffee - Sanka ain't the same as Bulletproof. So I've brought on Cameron George, founder of TruKava, who's products meet the rigorous standards of The World Health Organization to classify their Kava as a food safe for daily use. And I've been using one of their products, KavaPlex, since December. Today we're talking about liquid ketones. You may be familiar with the terms ketogenic diet and ketosis -which is a process that happens when your body doesn't have enough carbohydrates to burn for energy. Instead, it burns fat and makes things called ketones, which it can use for fuel. Now, many of you guys have experienced ketosis through hardcore fasting or doing a fast mimicking diet like Prolon, which I talked about in episode #1 of this series. But let's face it, fasting kinda sucks. You're hungry and cranky for a few days before your body finally switches over to ketosis. And if you've ever been in ketosis, it's a beautiful clean, consistent energetic state where you feel alive, alert and mentally sharp. Well, what if, instead of fasting, you could drink liquid ketones and get enough ketones in your body in 15 minutes to experience a similar energy that would take you multiple days of fasting to achieve? That's the topic of our conversation today, with Michael Brandt, co-founder and CEO of HVMN – Health Via Modern Nutrition – and their liquid Ketone drink, Ketone-IQ. Some of HVMN's investors and advisors include: Andreeson Horowitz Marissa Mayer, former CEO of Yahoo Tony Hseih, Found of Zappos Joe Montana, Hall of Fame Quarterback They have a $6M contract with the US Department of Defense They do work with top Tour de France cycling teams And they nicknamed Ketone-IQ “NAVY SEAL Juice” IN THIS EPISODE What is a ketone and how it provides energy Ketone vs. Glucose driven energy Does Ketone-IQ effect your sleep? Our rampage of thoughts, of course. What do we do when we want to punish our worst societal offenders? We lock ‘em up and put ‘em in solitary…where they have no escape from themselves or tbeir thoughts. Harvard professor Dan Gilbert, ran an interesting experiment with some of his college students that reinforced this sentiment. He took a group of students and put them in a room for multiple hours, with absolutely nothing to do and no forms of stimulation (no phones, nothing to read or write with etc). The situation became so uncomfortable for many of the students that some of them even elected to receive minor but uncomfortable shock treatments …because that shock somehow represented an upgrade from the discomfort they were experiencing internally. All of this evidence points to a need to work much more effectively with our thoughts. And who better to come teach us about thoughts, then one of my closest friends, Cory Muscara.   WHO IS CORY MUSCARA Cory is a renowned mindfulness teacher and co-founder of mindfulness.com His meditations have been heard over 20 million times in over 100 countries He's the author of best selling book Stop Missing Your Life He's lived as a monk in Burma where he spent 6 months in complete silence He's also picked up about 175,000 followers since his last appearance on this show a couple of years ago IN THIS EPISODE How to step outside of your mind when its rampaging Compassionate and practical ways to work with an agitated mind Techniques to work with scary feelings A 2 word mantra to calm a freaked out mind Cory teaches many live masterclasses, by far his most popular of which is Working With Thoughts, of which you're getting a taste of today.

Baseball cards, football cards, basketball cards…you name it. My prized possession was a 1989 Barry Sanders Score rookie card – which my best friend Mike DeCoursey tried many times, to no avail, to pry from my possession via underwhelming trade offers and eventually an attempted five finger discount which ended poorly for him. Little did I know, the world of trading cards would provide an early education for understanding this burgeoning new field of the mysterious NFT, or non-fungible token. A token is simply an object that represents something else. In the case of my Barry Sanders rookie card, the card itself is a “token” that represents Barry Sanders and his Hall of Fame level performance as a football player. Fans of football and Barry Sanders want to get their hands on this valuable token, or trading card. Since there was only a limited supply of Barry Sanders rookie cards printed, the demand drives up the monetary value of this card. What's really important to understand here is the community of fans are what give value to this otherwise meaningless piece of cardboard with a picture of Barry Sanders on it. If you can wrap your brain around why trading cards are valuable, or any collectible for that matter, you'll be able to understand why NFTs, non-fungible tokens, are exploding in popularity in the digital space…and hold the potential to revolutionize the world the way the internet did 25 years ago. 2021 was the “year of the NFT,” and you cant go anywhere on the internet without hearing about it. But I was quick to dismiss NFTs, because everything I heard about them sounded like JPEGs of apes getting sold for $50,000 which made no sense to me. I was going to wait it out. And when I started trying to learn about NFTs, my head was spinning with things I didn't understand, like the blockchain, DAOs, web 2.0 vs 3.0…it was all overwhelming and over my head. But when I finally started to grasp these concepts and see the enormous potential in the future of NFTs, it was like walking through a one-way door: I couldn't go back. The most influential person to waking me up to the power of NFTs is a very good friend of the show, and Great Man Mastermind brother, Brad Barrett. Who is Brad Barrett? The co-host of one of the world's largest financial podcasts, ChooseFI The FI community has helped millions of people get on the path to financial independence through planning, saving and smart investing Brad is a great guide for the NFT discussion because his roots in financial independence are rooted in conservative, prudent, long-term investing We wanted to do a beginner level intro conversation to the world of NFTs so you can start to educate yourself on the space, and point to other excellent resources – podcasts - that Brad has vetted for you to continue your education. This is the first episode of a 2 part series with Brad: In this Episode: NFTs explained, in plain English Why Brad was skeptical about crypto, blockchain and NFTs, and what made him a believer A beginner level definition of the Blockchain How understanding trading cards can help you understand NFTs Working definition of Web 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 Why Brad cautions looking at NFTs as investing, and more speculative, because it is so early and the wild wild west It's important to note that I have not yet taken the plunge financially in NFTs – so I do not currently own NFTs. Brad on the other hand does own what I would consider to be a substantial amount of NFTs, even though it only represents a very small portion of his net worth. He said the #1 bullshit fantasy that men believe which sabotages our relationships…is that relationships should be easy. I certainly used to believe that myth. And I can understand why we'd want it to be that way. You bust your ass at work, some of you bust your asses to be a good Dad…you're exhausted…shouldn't you be able to just relax when it comes to your relationship? Sorry, bro, it just doesn't work that way. Anything worth having, requires work to have it. And that includes earning the trust of your woman. Fortunately today, Bryan and I have honed in on and simplified 5 ways to build trust and credibility with your woman. It's important to note that these 5 ways have been sourced directly from the women in my Instagram community based on a half dozen polls I've run over the last 3 months. Said another way, these aren't Dominick's beliefs…these are the beliefs of a diverse group of women who are consistently calling for the same few things from their man. The 5 Ways to Build Trust and Credibility: Have a vision for your relationship Take her deeper – emotionally, sexually, spiritually – than she can go on her own Know how to restore integrity when you fall out of it If you need space during conflict…take it…and make sure you come back Be willing to trust her intuition, even if it conflicts with your logic

As my Instagram community continues to grow, I keep hearing louder and louder calls from my female followers for men to be more vulnerable. Simultaneously, the men in my communities say that they aren't so sure the women in their lives really want our vulnerability. Many men are gun shy – having been burned from opening up emotionally in the past…only to have it work against them in a variety of ways, which will discuss in this episode. So to bridge this vulnerability gap, I decided to run a little survey in my Instagram community where I asked a very simple question of the men: What would you need to be more vulnerable with your romantic partner? I got about 100 illuminating responses from these men…of which I've culled down 5 core themes which Bryan and I will be discussing in today's episode. In this Episode: The ways men have been burned in the past by being vulnerable What Brené Brown and Bell Hooks have to say about why men are hesitant to be vulnerable The 5 things men need to be more vulnerable with you What the man's responsibility is in each of these 5 categories If you're in a relationship, this would be an excellent episode to listen to together and discuss afterwards (or if you're exploring a new relationship dynamic with a partner, it could make for a great virtual date and discussion)… …or if you're rolling solo like me and just want to learn how to have better, deeper more vulnerable conversations, this episode is for you.

When something is undeniably broken and he's forced to confront what's no longer working. In the context of physical health, we're talking about panic attacks, erectile dysfunction, chronic anxiety, stifling brain fog… Listen, if you're here to live in alignment with your Great Man – who you are at your fullest potential – you have to be fully engaged in optimizing your foundation, your physical, mental and emotional well-being. But with the explosion of information at your fingertips – data from wearable devices, fasting protocols, supplements, specialized diets etc – it can get really confusing really quickly…and maybe you've tried a bunch of this stuff to no avail, leaving you frustrated and disenfranchised. Of course, the ManKind Project is near and dear to my heart, as they were my initiation to men's work. Another group I have tremendous respect for is Evryman. Evryman was founded in 2016, and whose mission is to connect and help men to lead more successful, fulfilling lives. Evryman has a particular focus in getting men out of our minds and into our bodies to feel our emotions. In fact, Bryan and I use a variation of the Evryman protocol in our own men's group to practice emotional fluency. What propelled Evryman on the national scene was one of their co-founders, Dan Doty, appeared on the Joe Rogan show…which led to big time media exposure including a spot on The Today Show. Evryman has been featured in Men's Health, Inc. Magazine and the NY Times called Evryman the “Crossfit for Your Emotions” According to our guest today, over 1,000 men have gone through their in person retreats and another 1,000 men are involved in their online communities. We pull them away from their own expressiveness, from their feelings, from their sensitivity to others. The very phrase “To be a man” means suck it up and keep going. Disconnection is not the fallout from traditional masculinity, disconnection IS traditional masculinity.” What Terrence Real is saying is most men have been indoctrinated to manhood through sustaining injury – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. We are taught to deal with that injury by disconnecting from our emotions. So not only are we walking around with untreated mental, emotional and spiritual wounds… …we don't even have the awareness that we're wounded because we're so disconnected from our emotions and ourselves. Here are some signs that wounds exist: You self sabotage when things in your life are going well You have difficulty maintaining intimacy in romantic relationships You are surrounded by people yet feel misunderstood and alone You don't have deep emotional relationships with other men You have a hard time trusting men You have a hard time trusting women You carry guilt or shame in your sexuality   In This Episode: The 7 Masculine Wounds: Growing up without a father/father figure Growing up with an emotionally unavailable father Enmeshment with a mother Never learning how to trust men with his emotions Having been bullied for size/status/sexual orientation Hazing rituals as normalized rights of passage to acceptance Believing pain and suffering are the most noble paths to success The impact these wounds have on our resiliency, on our ability to connect, on our ability to be trustworthy leaders How men's work facilitates the ability to turn towards, face and heal these wounds
