Welcome back to THIS. with Shauna Griffiths! This episode, Breaking Down Creating Your Own Opportunities features Brett Essman, a Art Director and Creative Director in the Creative Agency world, who sports just the right amount of humble swagger as he leads in work, life, and in youth basketball. One of the things I love most about this episode is the #LeadershipAthlete in Brett that shines so brightly. He clearly leads his own team, agency, and clients with incredible resilience and commitment to the pursuit of optimal performance. In his "spare time" he transfers his skills and mindset to his son's basketball team. As you listen - you'll notice the business and basketball lessons overlap. Whether you're at work or on the field of play - the rules of the game are much the same. Tune-in to this episode to hear about: His DM that hooked me and created this episode opportunity Brett's career journey that is evidence of his innate drive to create his own opportunities What creating your own opportunities means to Brett His three rules of teamwork that apply to business AND youth basketball Shifting perspectives to take on the challenge Proactive problem solving that allows you to find solutions before clients know they exist Nostalgic chatter among two hoop heaps Words of wisdom from the guy who thought he may be working at a local Kinkos his whole life We hope you enjoy the episode and look forward to your feedback about it! Susie Essman made a name for herself cursing out Larry David as her alter-ego Susie Greene on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm.' But as she reveals in this episode, in the 24 years since the show premiered—and nearly four decades since she met David in the New York comedy clubs—they have never once gotten into an actual fight. Essman opens up about David's unique “genius” as a comedian, how ‘Curb' gets away with being so politically incorrect, the unconscious inspiration for her character and the bizarro world in which she could have played Elaine on ‘Seinfeld.' Plus, stories about roasting Donald Trump to his face at the Friar's Club, her “horrible” late-night debut with Johnny Carson, and getting to portray Ilana Glazer's mother on ‘Broad City.'This episode was originally published on November 30, 2021.Follow Matt Wilstein on Threads @mattwilsteinFollow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod and Threads @lastlaughpodHighlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast Hosted on Acast. In 1999, after roasting Jerry Stiller to perfection at the Friars Club, Susie Essman got a phone call. It was an old friend of hers from the stand-up comedy circuit: Larry David. David wanted her on his new television series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. With no guarantee that she'd be a recurring cast member and little in the way of financial compensation, Essman joined the show as Susie Greene. Over the course of 24 years and 12 seasons, she became one of Curb's most popular characters. Whether foiling a scheme devised by Jeff Garlin (who plays Essman's husband), trading jabs with Richard Lewis, or hurling insults at David, Essman's raucous wit reliably steals the show. On this week's episode of Table for Two, the actress and comedian joins host Bruce Bozzi and discusses her early years waitressing in New York City, the key to David's genius, and how her perspective on life has shifted with age.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Whether on stage as a stand-up comedian, alongside Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm, or answering lightning-round questions, Susie Essman never fails to get a laugh out of her audience. Brett Essman is a Creative Director extraordinaire Brett Essman from ad agency Preston Spire in Minneapolis Minnesota. Brett's here to talk about being proactive as a Creative Director and looking for the opportunity to create big ideas in every brief And when you boil all that down, what he's really describing is this idea of not becoming complacent but pushing yourself to go above and beyond. Today we're joined by Mr. Christian Essman, the senior director of admissions at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and host of the All Access: Med School Admissions podcast where he interviews admissions faculty from across the nation. With med school applications right around the corner for a lot of us, I think this conversation with Mr. Essman was really needed to try to understand how admissions are affected by the pandemic. As he notes, this year of applicants will be the first to have been affected by COVID for over a year, and these effects will be reflected in the applications. Mr. Essman shares a lot of really valuable insight in this episode - including details on what exactly happens to your application when you submit it, tips to writing your personal statement, advice on getting recommendations even if you've only met the person virtually, how med school applications increased 17% this past year, and much much more. At the end of the day, Mr. Essman urges us to just trust the process, and that everything will be okay. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/medspectives/message

A pivot can be a powerful thing. Tina Essmaker started as a social worker with a side project, a Kickstarted magazine she founded with her husband. But when her marriage ended, she had to re-evaluate: stay with the magazine, or start something new? She decided to tap into her skills as a social worker and her connection to the creative community to re-launch as a creative coach. In this week's episode, Damona talks with Essmaker about how she transitioned from publishing into a self-created role where she helps creative workers identify and stick with their goals.Essmaker offers concrete tips for people considering a shift from one path to another, and encourages listeners to consider the "emotional balance sheet" of their lives. (And Damona gets a gold star for her ability to describe her work concisely - would you get the same?) "It’s just a continual act of faith, that knowing what I’m doing is valuable and it’s needed, and then trusting that clients will come to me," says Essman, who now works as a coach, a speaker, and a writer.ResourcesTo learn more about Tina and her services go to:https://tinaessmaker.comWord of Mouth Marketing- Articlehttps://www.bigcommerce.com/blog/word-of-mouth-marketing/Nielsen Reporthttps://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/article/2012/consumer-trust-in-online-social-and-mobile-advertising-grows/If you like our show, please let us know by rating and reviewing it on whatever platform you listen to it. 5* reviews help us grow our audience and reach! To learn more about FreshBooks and receive an exclusive offer go towww.freshbooks.com/imal
