After a career spanning almost six decades, US fashion icon Norma Kamali is still reinventing herself. After immersing herself in the London fashion scene in the 1960s and establishing a New York boutique at the end of the decade, Kamali quickly rose to prominence. Her designs could be found on the star-studded dance floors of Studio 54, on an iconic 1976 Farrah Fawcett poster and on Whitney Houston’s first album cover. She joins Monocle’s Emma Nelson to tell us about her approach to design, her dedication to wellness and how Donald Trump’s tariffs are affecting her business.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For over five decades, Norma Kamali has been at the forefront of innovation in fashion, from pioneering digital retail in the 1990s to integrating AI into the design process today. Kamali's latest collection, which debuted at New York Fashion Week this month, marks a return to her signature aesthetic, characterized by sleek designs, unique layering and modern interpretations of 20th-century silhouettes. The collection also drew inspiration from Bob Dylan's style. Kamali's fascination with Dylan, sparked by a Martin Scorsese documentary, influenced the styling, which incorporated black and brown fedoras with feathers, reminiscent of Dylan's iconic look. But in past seasons, Kamali has taken a more tech-forward approach, including by leveraging AI: In October 2023, she partnered with Maison Meta to develop a proprietary AI model trained on her archives. And in February 2024, she showcased AI-generated designs in an installation dubbed "Fashion Hallucinations." According to Kamali, AI is set to shape the industry's approach to archiving and to facilitate creative longevity. Following New York Fashion Week, Kamali joined Glossy international fashion reporter Zofia Zwieglinska on the Glossy Podcast to discuss her latest collection, the role of technology in fashion and the future of her brand, which includes new category expansions.
When Norma Kamali studied fashion illustration in the 1960s, she never expected to become a designer. So when a job as an airline clerk came along, she was glad to accept it—along with the perk of dirt-cheap flights from New York to London. On those weekend trips abroad, she discovered fashion that was exuberant and eye-catching, so she started loading her suitcase with clothing to sell in the U.S. By the 1970s, she was designing her own pieces out of a shop in New York; soon she was selling them to celebrities like Cher and Bette Midler. Today, after more than 50 years in the fashion industry, Norma Kamali is known for iconic designs like the sleeping bag coat, and the bold red bathing suit popularized by Farah Fawcett. This episode was produced by J.C. Happy Post Memorial Day, Fashion Besties! Whether you celebrated in style or stayed cozy in your pajamas, I hope you had a fabulous time. Special thanks and snaps to everyone in the Armed Forces for their incredible service. This week, we're jumping from the high dive into our Top Swimsuit Picks for 2024. Get ready to hit the beach in style with suits that flatter every figure. HOT TIP: You can find all of Holly's selections on your Pinterest board of the week! As your Fashion Over 40 (and now Over 50) Bathing Suit Expert - with a bathing suit PSA- This is a product that has more measurements and specifications that can go down to the 1/16th of an inch. The first thing you should look for when buying a bathing suit is the measurements in the areas where you need the most support. Key Talking Points: Finding the Perfect Fit: Measurements Matter: Swimsuits, like lingerie, require precise measurements. Look for suits that fit your body type perfectly, offering the support and coverage you need. Tall Girls, Listen Up: If you're over 5'10” with a long torso, choose styles designed to prevent uncomfortable riding up. Proper fit is key to avoiding fashion mishaps. Support for All Shapes: From minimal support to bra-like structures, pick swimsuits with the right amount of boob support. Wider straps can also provide better lift and comfort. Coverage Concerns: Ensure your suit isn't too see-through when wet and offers enough coverage in the front and back to keep you comfortable and confident. Style and Functionality: Multi-Functional Swimwear: Choose swimsuits that can double as bodysuits for a seamless transition from beach to dinner. This adds value by lowering the cost per wear (CPW). Age-Appropriate Choices: Find a balance between stylish and age- appropriate. Avoid suits that make you feel self-conscious or too matronly. Activity-Ready: For active days, opt for styles that stay put and provide enough coverage, especially if you're running around with kids or participating in water sports. Top Picks for 2024: Jantzen: Known for their rich history and diverse styles, Jantzen offers affordable swimsuits with UV protection. Check out their sister company, Cosita Linda, for more fashion-forward options. Karla Colletto: If you're ready to splurge, Karla Colletto's swimsuits, made in the USA, feature unique styles and prints perfect for making a statement. Miraclesuit: A long-time favorite, Miraclesuit designs provide excellent support and a flattering silhouette, making them worth the higher price tag. Norma Kamali: With styles like the Illusion swimsuit, Norma Kamali offers sexy and well-fitted options that are sure to turn heads. Swimsuits For All: Catering to sizes 4 to 44, this brand ensures every body is a beach body. Their reasonable prices and wide range of styles make them a go-to choice. What Not to Do: Avoid Big Box Stores: Don't waste time hunting for cheap, ill-fitting swimsuits at big box stores. Invest in quality pieces that make you feel fabulous and last longer. Avoid Instagram Traps: What you see being sold on IG is mostly fast fashion: A major fashion crime, and crappy all-around. Last Week's Episode Recap: Last week, we tackled the tricky topic of office dress codes in Episode 197. PS: A big shout out to everyone who wrote in with terrific comments! This weeks episode is definitely a special one!!! We have the one and only Joseph Abboud. Joseph is an American menswear fashion designer and author. I would put him on the top of the list right next to Ralph Lauren, Versaci, Tommy Hilfiger and any other mens fashion designer. The National Arts Club has been awarding its Medal of Honor to some of fashion's biggest names since 2003, starting with Geoffrey Beene and including Carolina Herrera, Betsey Johnson, Norma Kamali and Anna Sui. But it has never honored a menswear designer. That will change Friday night when Joseph Abboud is singled out for his illustrious career in the men's industry. Abboud joined Ralph Lauren in 1981, eventually becoming associate director of menswear design. He launched his own label in spring 1987. In 1988, JA Apparel was created as a joint venture between Abboud and GFT (Gruppo Finanziario Tessile) USA. The designer, who graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Boston and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, got his start in fashion at the Louis Boston men's store in his hometown before working for Ralph Lauren as a menswear designer. He launched his namesake brand in 1987.
This week, a conversation with iconic designer Norma Kamali. Recorded over Zoom from her office in Manhattan, we cover her 50-year career, from graduating from FIT with a degree in illustration to working for Northwest Airlines—which allowed her to fly to London on the weekends for only $29. It felt like a time capsule to hear her talk about the cultural revolution in London in the 1960s and how she would bring back pieces for friends, which led her to start a store, and eventually design her own pieces. Soon her designs were worn by Bianca Jagger, Bette Midler, and Cher. But at 29 Norma left her marriage, which meant walking away from the brand she'd quietly built with only $98 in her pocket. But starting over ultimately led her to create a brand with longevity and panache. From her unique sleeping bag coat design (worn by the doormen at Studio 54 and by those standing outside hoping it would increase their chances of getting in) to the now-iconic red swimsuit Farrah Fawcett wore on that famous poster, Norma has dressed generations. She's full of wisdom and perspective and gently gives me advice on everything from aging, to dating (she fell in love again ten years ago at 65), to how she views busyness—she says “the more you do, the more you can do.” We get into her thoughts on her industry's evolution and on upcoming generations. I hope I did her career and story justice in this conversation with a real icon. Levain Bakery founders Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald met at a Manhattan swimming pool while training for a triathlon. Not long after, they set out to create a bakery together. What started as an artisan bread shop quickly gained traction for its Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies, referred to by The New York Times as “the largest, most divine chocolate chip cookies in Manhattan” in 1997. Today, Levain has 11 locations, with a 12th storefront coming to Los Angeles this summer. Prior to it all, though, Weekes spent her early career in fashion working for greats such as Norma Kamali and Adrienne Vittadini, and McDonald worked in the finance industry for eight years. To hear how the two pivoted their careers to create a highly successful cookie company, tune in to this week's episode.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Moms Moving On: Navigating Divorce, Single Motherhood & Co-Parenting.
Divorce can turn life as you know it upside down, but when the dust settles and you are ready to navigate this new chapter, we are here to help. This week Jade Sklaver returns to Moms Moving On to discuss adjusting to your new life after divorce with Michelle Dempsey-Multack. Michelle and Jade will dive into: Knowing when you are ready to date again Taking the time to heal before beginning to date Finding your work/life balance in single motherhood How to explain new relationships to your children AND MUCH MORE! As a University of Florida graduate, Jade Sklaver, founder of StyleChild, majored in Public Relations and pursued many fashion related internships while still in school. After completing rotations at Barney's New York, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and major fashion PR firms, she had no doubt that was the path she was headed down. Working at a few major labels after graduating, Sklaver found herself being hired by Norma Kamali as her right hand person in design and production. The opening on the team proved to be an invaluable opportunity and would ultimately shape her future. Sklaver gained experience working with factories, fabrics, and design in addition to learning product development and production. After another corporate fashion position, and marriage, Sklaver made her way to South Florida and had her daughter, Liv Jaymes. Liv became the inspiration for what came next: StyleChild. While pregnant with Liv and yearning for a passion project, Sklaver started building the foundation for what is now StyleChild, a kid's shoe company specializing in functional and stylish shoes at affordable prices. The business started with reselling cute and trendy "no label" sneakers and as popularity grew, Sklaver knew she needed a brand of her own to stand behind. After a major life change, Jade decided to take a leap of faith and commit to work directly with the factory to design, manufacture, and produce sneakers under her own label StyleChild. Since then, StyleChild has grown into over 25 exclusive styles, retails in stores all across the country and in Canada and has a highly trafficked website. Most recently, Jade and her small team opened a by-appointment (virtual and in-person) showroom and warehouse in Boca Raton, Florida which has given her customers a personalized shopping experience - especially important during the pandemic. Dedicated to being the best mother and entrepreneur, Jade feels passionate that others can have that same work-life balance and do something they love. She recently launched a Kicks Starter affiliate program that allows other mothers to start their own business selling the StyleChild label in specific markets. Are you in the market for a new bathing suit? Swim season is just around the corner, so if you are starting to think about a new suit this year, then you are in luck! #yourewelcome Holly has been on the lookout for the what's new for 2023 – and as always – how to shop for swimsuits that are CORRECT FOR YOUR BODY TYPE, not just for the latest fad. During this style recon, not only did Holly check out her tried and true brands (Miracle Suit), but she has taken all the work and fear out of finding new bathing suits brands that you need to know (Biliblond)! Designer Spotlight: Hila, founder of Biliblond coming up next week! HOT TIP: Go to Holly's curated Pinterest board for this episode. #facts This week, Holly starts out with a big fat truth bomb: ACCEPT YOUR BODY FOR WHO YOU ARE TODAY; not 10 lbs from now, not 20 lbs from yesterday. Let's not focus on how to be skinnier, or how to be more in shape. We need to thank our bodies for everything it does for us each day. Let's celebrate it instead of shaming it. Take a good look, folks. This right here. This is as good as it gets. Okay? This is it. This is the way my body looks. AND THAT IS OKAY! What you ARE going to do is embrace your body type, and where you are in the moment. You do not need to be perfect to find the perfect-fitting swimsuit. #fashionfact So, instead of missing out on family vacation time, or girls' trips, or just some fun in the sun, EMBRACE who you are and what you've got. Because there IS a swimsuit for that. #fashionforeveryone “This will bring you to better bathing suit karma, and help you find what you are looking for.” - Holly Katz HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT BATHING SUIT If there is something you don't like about your body, or don't like wearing a bathing suit – we can work on that. Problem areas: Do you like to hide your stomach? Do you need more coverage on your backside? Big boobs? No boobs? This is where you start. If you know your problem areas, then you can find solutions. But this doesn't come easy. You must try on swimsuits. You can even go to specialty shops and be FITTED FOR A SWIMSUIT. Just like your foundational pieces, like a bra, go get professional help if you can, to help you learn about the right fit. HOT TIP: The only people who can shop for swimsuits at Target or other big box stores are 14-year-olds who don't have body and fit issues. The styles in those stores are not for women who need to manage their body type. #PERIOD! On the flip side of that, don't give up and end up in your Grandmother's Swimming Outfit. Matronly-fitting suits are not the answer to finding a swimsuit that helps you with your body type. More fabric is not fashion. Just like clothing, don't hide behind a suit that's "safe" because its the only one that you will be seen in public in. Shop for fit first. Get a bathing suit that fits and gives you the support you need and solves your problem areas. Even if you have to look a little longer, or a little harder. Buy the suit that FITS, regardless of the color. If it fits well, the color doesn't matter. You aren't shopping for price or color. You are shopping for fit first. Don't take the easy way out. Look for quality fabric. If you can see through the fabric, it's a No-Go. Is it stretchy? Are the seams reinforeced and durable? Are the straps adjustable? Will it compliment your figure? Is this something you can feel confident in? Holly's favorite swimsuit brands: Norma Kamali Dolce & Gabbana Johanna Ortiz Miracle Suit Trina Turk Biliblond DO NOT SKIMP ON PRICE FOR SWIMSUITS #sorrynotsorry Please do not skimp on a bathing suit because of price. Don't do it. You can fight Holly on this if you wish. People often want something quick and cheap because they don't wear a bathing suit very often, or they're only in a bathing suit once a year. A quality bathing suit can last several years. If you take care of them properly, maybe 3-4 years! If you go on vacation once every few years, please get a decent bathing suit for around $150 to $200. You will love the way you feel in it! HOT TIP: If you splurge on a bathing suit that looks amazing for your body type, you're going to want to wear a bathing suit more. Just like clothes. The better you feel, your self-esteem only goes up from zero. #facts DON'T FORGET A COVER UP AND ACCESSORIES! A cover up provides you with sun protection and allows you to walk around in public without any body parts hanging out. You need a transitional fashion item to get you around until you are pool or beach side. You don't have to be matchy-matchy, but your bathing suit and cover up should coordinate somewhat. Holly LOVES a kimono or a knit dress – something that allows your fabulous-fitting swimsuit to be seen, but with a bit of mystery. #yyyaassss HOT TIP: An oversized T-shirt from your kid's school carnival is NOT a cover up. #nogirl You want to think about putting an outfit together when you're going to the beach! Part of the cover-up area is a stylish hat! A big sun hat just makes you look more fabulous. In addition, you need a fun tote bag. This is your ‘handbag' for the beach. Don't skimp here and walk around with plastic bags, book bags, canvas bags - and god-forbid – the rubber CROCS tote bag. Make your husband carry the over-loaded beach bag. Get yourself something chic and super cute for your sunglasses, sunscreen, and beach read! This does not need to break the bank. CARE FOR YOUR SUITS For the care and maintenance of your bathing suits, you can wash them with your regular wash - but do not dry them in the dryer. There are specialty or delicate detergents you can use, if you like, too. Lay your suits flat or hang them to dry. Bathing suits should not lose their color. They should not get stretched out. With the right care, your swimsuit should last for a few years! Ok, that is it for this week fashion besties. Don't let your body issues stand in the way of looking fabulous this summer. It's hard to imagine Norma Kamali as anything other that the iconic, successful designer she has built herself to be over the last 50+ years. Her avant garde designs have graced the likes of Farrah Fawcett and Whitney Houston, and decades of creative looks have earned her a CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. There was a time, however, when Norma was still figuring it all out. As a young woman sharing a clothing business with her then-husband, Norma had to make the difficult decision to leave behind what they'd built in a time that was famously hostile toward female entrepreneurs. Norma's courageous choice to strike out on her own taught her to be strategic in good times and bad, welcoming the cycles of life as opportunities to learn and grow, making decisions that fuel self-esteem and self worth. In choosing to honor integrity and creativity above all else, Norma has invoked success in her own terms. Now expanding her brand to include skincare and home goods, Norma shares her secrets to a happy and successful life in her book, I Am Invincible. Thanks for listening! With this month's words "Dare" & "Purpose" in mind, Kelly revisits a conversation she had with iconic fashion designer, Norma Kamali. Norma Kamali is one google search away from loads of outward success stories- from Farrah Fawcett's classic red swimsuit, to the "Carrie" dress on Sex and the City- her designs have catapulted a career in fashion for over 50 years. However, in true Velvet's Edge form, those stories of her successes as well as failures launched a much deeper conversation about true life purpose, finding your soulmate and the lessons in the ups and downs of life."I found my soulmate at 65," Norma Kamali tells Kelly. "And I simply wasn't ready for him before that. From failed marriages to childhood happenings, I had a lot to sort out within myself." Ms. Kamali laughs when Kelly says "I'm about to turn 40 and I had this mentality at first, like, my life is done. It's over!" and rebuddles "that's hilarious. You are just getting started." Kamali tells her stories of being broke while having her designs run in major magazines like Vogue and is the greatest reminder of not comparing your insides with others outsides and staying the course to your own purpose. Her story is powerful and inspiring. She is the definition of daring. Shop: normakamali.com Socials: @normakamali See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week is a conversation with style expert Stacy London. You might know her as the co-host of TLC's iconic show, “What Not to Wear." Following that success, she's gone on to host and executive produce, write books, and create a podcast. Last year, Stacy founded State of Menopause, a holistic line addressing the symptoms associated with menopause. And while it might seem like a twist, she's doing what she has done her entire career as a stylist: helping people who are struggling feel better. She's honestly so cool—we explored the connection between style, eating disorder recovery, and negative body image and also talked about career transitions. She gave me style advice and I loved speaking with her and I'm curious to know what you think, so let me know if you listen. Norma Kamali has been at the forefront of the fashion world for more than five decades. "Before The Cheering Started," she combined an early love of painting and design with an intrigue for the mod fashions of London in the 60's and a "why not me" attitude. The result? A brand that started in a small store in New York and is now known around the world. Norma Kamali, respectful of the past but not living in it and still going strong after all these years. “One of the most important things you can do is to educate yourself on some of the key skin care ingredients and how they work with your skin: Because maybe there's a product that's formulated for your skin type or concern, but it contains an ingredient that doesn't work well for you. Moms Moving On: Navigating Divorce, Single Motherhood & Co-Parenting.
When we become parents, we never imagine spending time away from our children. Divorce changes that, and many of us are left with 50% of our time without them. This week, Jade Sklaver joins Moms Moving On to discuss how she turned her time away from her daughter into a successful business. Jade and I touch on the importance of finding a hobby and your purpose during your time away from your children. Our goal is to bring you the stories of artists who inspire. Episode 110 featuring pioneering fashion icon Norma Kamali is perhaps the pinnacle of this, and literally chock full of advice. The designer and innovator-in so many categories-shares an intimate account of her story, from the very beginning, including the moment when she brought the miniskirt to the masses, here. From her clothing of course, including her famous sleeping bag coat (and the story behind it), to her supremely pure skincare collection, her olive oil, her furniture collection, her I Am Invincible book, and more; we dissect it all. Norma tells the story about how she came to invent athleisure, she really did, and talks about her beloved and bestselling Diana dress, a wedding attire favorite, with three iterations since its debut, that Norma, herself, has recently re-fallen in love with. We discuss the specific story behind her journey to wellness circa 9/11, and how she was an early adopter and innovator in that space. During this conversation, you'll be in the front row at an intimate discussion with the groundbreaking and one-of-a-kind designer who will leave a truly huge legacy in fashion and in design. Get inspired as you hear her explain her point of view on being who you are, naturally. Hear her share her point of view and the details of her lifestyle when it comes to self-care and aging, a point of view she feels is important to impart on the younger generation. On that topic, Norma talks about what she shares with and why she's inspired by Gen Z. Norma explains why she's also inspired by technology, talks becoming and then shedding being a “possession freak,” and how she learned to make space for new ideas. We are beyond thrilled and honored to add to Story + Rain Talks this incredible and important firsthand story from a game-changing artist who, for decades to come, will have an enormous influence on design and on future artists of all kinds. What else can be said except that after listening, we assure you, you'll want to take a page from her book and from her I-Am-Invincible attitude. This week, a conversation with Sam Salad. As you'll hear, Sam is not only hilarious, but he's also humble, original, creative, and truly one of the best writers—and especially copywriters—I've ever met. As he says about himself, he writes and he makes clothes. Sam with his partner Rebma are the designers behind the LA-based clothing line MEALS. As Sam writes, “the brand prepares non-gendered clothing inspired by food. MEALS bakes ‘food culture' into apparel, blurring the lines between the clothes we eat and the food we wear.” We talk about that blur between food, bodies, eating, and clothing, and the juxtaposition of these topics led the conversation into interesting and unexpected directions. We also speak about how the timing of their young brand was impacted by the pandemic, collaborating in business with your romantic partner, prizing experiences over objects, body image and food culture much more. We recorded the episode about a month ago from my kitchen table; Sam came over with a bottle of rum and we talked for hours and honestly could've kept going. I hope you enjoy our conversation. As a lover of travel, fitness, fashion and having previously worked in the fashion industry for brands including Norma Kamali and Ralph Lauren, Nic has taken her experience, love of fashion, Jamaican roots, and Florida upbringing to create a brand inspired by her love of quality fashion and a vacation-inspired lifestyle.Timestamps[00:36] Welcome to this episode of the big possible show. It's time to welcome Nic Hyl.[01:12] Who's Nic and what does she do?[03:28] Nic's goal for 2022 is to have 4-6 paid speaking engagements for the year.[04:15] Watching from a distance vs. unapologetically chasing after your goals.[08:03] Humbling yourself and asking for help from other people. [10:08] Give twice and ask once. People are a lot more willing to help if you are also willing to contribute.[11:17] Fashion and design industry: What the future looks like.[14:05] How consumers can support the eco-friendly fashion and design industry.[16:57] Some practical tips to live more courageously, chase a dream, and maintain happiness.[18:42] No one that has any measure of success got it overnight.[19:45] If you never give up, you have a 50% chance of succeeding.[20:50] Nic's decision-making process and frameworks[24:26] The goal is always to go visit your grandparents.[25:16] Nic's most impactful life lesson.Notable QuotesIt was about knowing what I wanted but also being in environments that are conducive to helping me get what I want.I knew if I didn't take that job, I might not ever get the opportunity again.Very rarely in life does anybody ever do anything on their own 100%.People who are successful ask. There's no ego with accomplishing what it is that they want.Whatever the thing is, you have to ask for help.People are afraid to ask for help because they are afraid that they'll get a No.No one is really explaining what the consequences of our choices that we're asking for are.Start off with smaller goals that are able to be accomplished to boost your ego. You're going to get told No. Don't take it personally.I try not to make my decisions on emotions and fear. I try to make the decisions based on just factual, true, or false information about that topic.Once the decision is made, that's what it is. I don't go back and second guess myself.Make the best decision that you can with facts that you know, thinking about where you are and where you want to go.If you already know that it's not getting to your goal, why are you entertaining it?Without investing in our businesses, they probably aren't going to grow.ResourcesGet In Touch With Nic HylWebsite: https://nichyl.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nichylclothing/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NicHylClothing Get more from The Big Possible show:Website: https://www.thebigpossible.com RSVP for our next epic retreat hereFollow us on social: @follownoah @thebigpossible

She'll share some shocking stories she's never shared before. Then, she and legendary fashion designer, seventy-five-year-old Norma Kamali talk about tuning in to their power and why alcohol is a no no when it comes to balancing those raging hormones.
