Larry “The Legend” Ferlazzo joins us today to discuss the impact that distance learning has had on the nation’s 4.9 million English Language Learners. The prolific blog writer, author of 12 books including the ELL Teacher’s Toolbox, and current high school teacher Larry Ferlazzo helps us unpack the challenges educators face in meeting the needs of English Language Learners right now, and how schools can best support students under these less than ideal circumstances. As Larry’s work has also appeared in publications like the NY Times and Education Week, we also discuss Larry’s journey from community organizer to the classroom and the importance of educator voice in policy debates and public discourse around education. Camaro at launch, with Altered Vision in the right lane. Before each race (commonly known as a pass), each driver is allowed to perform a burnout, which heats the driving tires and lays rubber down at the beginning of the track, improving traction. Each driver then lines up (or stages) at the starting line.Races are started electronically by a system known as a Christmas tree. The Christmas tree consists of a column of six lights for each driver/lane, one blue, then three amber, one green, and one red, connected to light beams on the track. The blue is split into two halves. When the first light beam is broken by the vehicle's front tire(s) indicates that the driver has pre-staged (approximately 7 inches (180 mm) from the starting line), lights the first half of the blue circle, and then stages (at the starting line), which lights up the second half of the blue circle, and also the corresponding bar in the middle of that circle.[1] [2]Once the first competitor trips the staged beam, the tree is automatically activated, and the opponent will have up to seven seconds to stage or a red light and automatic timed-out disqualification occurs instantly. Otherwise, when both drivers are staged the tree will start the race between .8 and 1.3 seconds after the race is staged, with the time randomly selected by the Autostart system, which causes the three large amber lights to illuminate, followed by the green one. There are two standard light sequences: either the three amber lights flash simultaneously, followed 0.4 seconds later by the green light (a Pro tree), or the amber lights in sequence from top to bottom, 0.5 seconds apart, followed 0.5 seconds later by the green light (a Sportsman tree, or full tree). If the front tires leave from a stage beam (stage turn off) before the green light illuminates, the red light for that driver's lane illuminates instead, indicating disqualification (unless a more serious violation occurs). Once a driver commits a red-light foul (also known as redlighting), the other driver can also commit a foul start by leaving the line too early but still win, having left later. The green light automatically is illuminated on the opposite side of the red-lighting driver. Should both drivers leave after the green light illuminates, the one leaving first is said to have a holeshot advantage.Except where a breakout rule is in place, the winner is the first vehicle to cross the finish line (and therefore the driver with the lowest total reaction time and elapsed time). The elapsed time is a measure of performance only; it does not necessarily determine the winner. Because elapsed time does not include reaction time and each lane is timed individually, a car with a slower elapsed time can actually win if that driver's holeshot advantage exceeds the elapsed time difference. In heads-up racing, this is known as a holeshot win.[3] In categories where a breakout rule (some dial-in categories are this way, but Junior Dragster, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Stock, and Stock most notably) is in effect, if a competitor is faster than their predetermined time, that competitor loses. If both are faster than their predetermined time, the competitor closer to that time wins. Regardless, a red light foul is worse than a breakout, except in Junior Dragster where exceeding the absolute limit is a cause for disqualification.Several measurements are taken for each race: reaction time, elapsed time, and speed. Reaction time is the period from the green light illuminating to the vehicle leaving the starting line. Elapsed time is the period from the vehicle leaving the starting line to crossing the finish line. Speed is measured through a speed trap covering the final 66 feet (20 m) to the finish line, indicating average speed of the vehicle during the run last 66 feet (20m).In the standard racing format, the losing car and driver are removed from the contest, while the winner goes on to race other winners, until only one is left, based on a traditional bracket system (typically 4, 8, or 16 car brackets). In standard formats, the pairings are based on the lowest elapsed times. In bracket racing without a breakout (such as NHRA Competition Eliminator), pairings are based on times compared to their index (faster than index for class is better). In bracket racing with a breakout (Stock, Super Stock, but also the NHRA's Super classes), the closest to the index is favourable.A popular alternative to the standard eliminations format is the Chicago Style format (also called the Three Round format in Australia), named for the US 30 Dragstrip in suburban Gary, Indiana where a midweek meet will feature this format.[4] All entered cars participate in one qualifying round, and then are paired for the elimination round. The two fastest times among winners from this round will participate in the championship round. Depending on the organisation, the next two fastest times may play in a third, then fifth, and so forth, in consolation rounds.[5]Get Your FixAddictions and Other Vices*

He is 72 years old and had been held in solitary confinement for over 22 years. He is a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement and recovering radiation treatment of prostate cancer. Considering that many of the current political prisoners who struggled against the same systemic racist polices including police terrorism and that current activists face a similar fate for their activities today, it is essential that the current movement make freeing political prisoners part of any policy demands. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of news, information and commentary on the issue of political prisoners being held by the USA. Tonight our guest speaker will be attorney, activist and radio broadcaster Efia Nwangaza who will be joining us to discuss the need to keep pressure on the United States government to release COINTELPRO political prisoners particularly those formations like the Black Panther Party which was specifically named and targeted by the FBI because of their their political and social activities in the black community. According to the political prisoner human rights group Jericho Movement, COINTELPRO represents a part of American history that we would all like to forget. However, to forget is to repeat. Unfortunately, dozens of women and men are still incarcerated upwards of 40 years as a direct result of this heinous program. Not only did COINTELPRO seek to defame, neutralize, discredit, and destroy the more militant organizations of that day, viz. the Black Panther Party, Republic of New Afrika, Nation of Islam, American Indian Movement, anti-war, socialist and communist organizations; but it also targeted anyone who stood up against racism and oppression, and who challenged federal and state government to correct these ills and change its policies. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of information and news on political prisoners held by the US government. Unfortunately we will be focusing on the recent assassination of political prisoner Hugo Pinell who was murdered after finally getting out of solitary confinement where he spent 46 years. San Francisco Bayview writes, Hugo Pinell, affectionately known as Yogi Bear, was assassinated Aug. 12. The news sparked a victory celebration by prison guards on social media: “May he rot in hell” and “Good riddens” (sic), they typed. Yogi was the only member of the San Quentin 6 still in prison, and his role in the events of Aug. 21, 1971, the day George Jackson was assassinated, has earned the guards' incessant enmity ever since. There appears that prison gangs played a role in Mr. Pinell's murder. We will be joined by Robert Weide who is an assistant professor of Sociology at Cal State Los Angeles with subfield specializations in criminology, urban studies and racial and ethnic relations. He is currently working on two books based on his dissertation research while a student at NYU. Robert's first book will be about inter-racial gang conflict between Black and Latino street gangs in Los Angeles County. His second book will be about historical and contemporary conflict between racialized inmate factions in carceral settings in California. We will also be joined by Ernest Sheperd (Big Ern) who is a life time supporter of Yogi Pinell. They shared memories in prison together, struggled together and fought oppression together. Big Ern got out of prison but stayed in contact with Yogi and has personal letters where they discussed politics, mass incarceration and the ongoing struggle. Big Ern has a letter he recieved right before the assassination of Yogi. He has a lot to say about his fallen Comrade. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of news, information and conversation around the issue of political prisoners and prisoners of war.Tonight we will examine the case of Simón Trinidad (born July 30, 1950) is the alias of Juvenal Ovidio Ricardo Palmera Pineda. Trinidad is a high level member of The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army whom the United States government tried to frame on drug trafficking charges which failed but was able to convict him a kidnapping that he was not involved in that allegedly occurred in another country."For the past seven years, he has been a resident of the U.S. Penitentiary Administrative Maximum, better known as ADX. In the highest-security prison in North America, Trinidad is serving a sixty-year sentence for “conspiracy to commit hostage-taking,” based on a kidnapping that occurred on another continent — and without, his attorneys insist, any direct involvement on his part." - ALAN PRENDERGASTLets discuss the audacity of the US government bringing drug trafficking charges against Simón Trinidad while its agents partied with prostitutes in Colombia as well as cutting deals with the Mexican Sinoloa cartel. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army is currently involved in peace negotiations sponsored in Cuba which is celebrating its 56th year of independence from the brutal rule of puppet tyrants controlled by the West. Two new activist join the ranks of political prisoners in the USA. "Two animal-rights activists have been charged with terrorizing the fur industry during cross-country road trips in which they released about 5,740 mink from farms and vandalized the homes and businesses of industry members, the FBI said Friday. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Joseph Brian Buddenberg, 31, and Nicole Juanita Kissane, 28, both of California, and federal prosecutors charged them with conspiracy to violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act." - APThese "terrorism" charges against animal rights activists are another example that US Attorney General Loretta Lynch was being less than truthful when she indicated that there are no terrorism charges that can be brought against Dylan Roof.Black Lives Matter demonstrators interrupted a recent presidential debate to force them to discuss the state sponsored terrorism known as police brutality in the United States. Download PodcastTune in for an hour of news and information related to US held political prisoners and prisoners of war.Late last week it came to light that the prominent psychologists outside of the CIA shielded the program when the CIA's own health professionals repeatedly criticized the torture involved in that agency's post-Sept. 11 so-called interrogation program. As this news comes out, where are the health professionals on the torture of solitary confinement in US prisons? Many political prisoners have been held in solitary confinement for decades although the international community views it as torture. Palestinian Political Prisoner Rasmea Odeh was "sentenced to eighteen months in prison and a fine of one thousand dollars for lying on an immigration and citizenship application." The Federal prosecutor in the case used a confession Rasmea Odeh made in a 1969 “terrorism” conviction in an Israeli military court to prove she lied on her US immigration application by failing to disclose it. Odeh maintains that the confession was false and she only gave it after weeks of torture and sexual assault by the Israelis. She is appealing her conviction and remains free on bond.Artist/activist Brandan "Bmike" Odums recently created a large mural to bring attention to Albert Woodfox's plight. Woodfox is one of the prisoners known as the Angola 3, he is the last remaining member behind bars after being wrongfully convicted of the murder of a prison guard in the 1970s. The three men, Woodfox, Robert King and Herman Wallace started a prison chapter of the Black Panther Party and organized prisoners to stand up for their human rights. Family and advocates want supporters of former Black Panther member Robert Seth Hayes to continue to call in for his health campaign. Download Podcast Tonight we will be talking to Arthur “Silky Slim” Reed about his work to stop violence and senseless killings in our communities. Although many people are visiting family and friends this week, for many there will be an empty place at the table because of senseless violence. Silky Slim is a former gang member who once was about that "thug life" but after several near death experiences, he made a decision to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. You can check his space on the web at http://stopthekillinginc.org. After we talk to Silky Slim, we want to weigh in on rappers speaking out or not speaking out on the issues rooted in racism white supremacy. There were many Black people who took issue with Jay Z not using his position, platform and power to speak out on racial profiling in a meaningful manner after he was pretty much forced to weigh in on Shop & Frisk, then there are those that gave him a pass as a victim of racism and as such should not be expected to say or do anything to confront racism and white supremacy. Now we got a white rapper who goes by Macklemore who used his position and the American Music Awards platform to speak out on the issue of racial profiling and the killing of young black men. Will Black people have a problem with a white rapper speaking out on racial profiling and the killing of young Black men?
