592. Today we talk to author Carolyn Morrow Long about two of her books, one on Marie Laveau and the other on Madame LaLaurie. A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau. "Legendary for an unusual combination of spiritual power, beauty, charisma, showmanship, intimidation, and shrewd business sense, Marie Leveau also was known for her kindness and charity, nursing yellow fever victims and ministering to condemned prisoners, and her devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. In separating verifiable fact from semi-truths and complete fabrication, Carolyn Morrow Long explores the unique social, political, and legal setting in which the lives of Laveau's African and European ancestors became intertwined in nineteenth-century New Orleans." Madame Lalaurie, Mistress of the Haunted House. "A meticulous researcher of New Orleans history, Carolyn Long disentangles the threads of fact and legend that have intertwined over the decades. Was Madame Lalaurie a sadistic abuser? Mentally ill? Or merely the victim of an unfair and sensationalist press? Using carefully documented eyewitness testimony, archival documents, and family letters, Long recounts Lalaurie's life from legal troubles before the fire through the scandal of her exile to France to her death in Paris in 1849." Down Home Cajun Music- Khoury's RecordingsThis week's podcast focuses on Khoury's record's label. George Khoury was a Turkish-American businessman from Lake Charles and record store owner. In 1947, he noticed a lack of Cajun music being recorded in south Louisiana and decided to open a business to compete with Ed Shuler's Goldband Records and J. D. Miller's Fais-Do-Do and Feature labels. His base of operations was just around the corner from Ed's on Railroad Ave in Lake Charles. Khoury decided to create two labels simultaneously, Lyric and Khoury's, in 1950. The label had such artists as Lawrence Walker, Nathan Abshire, Dewey Balfa, Maurice Barzas, Will Kegley, Atlas Fruge and Crawford Vincent to name a few. Khoury continued the label into the 1960's, creating a musical history rich of influential Cajun music. Down Home Cajun Music - Rayne Bo Ramblers 1946 RCA Victor SessionAt this point, Happy and the Rayne Bo Ramblers had stayed busy recording since 1935. In 1946, Happy and the band recorded their last recordings for a major label when they recorded this session for RCA Victor. 1946 seemed to be the end of an era and beginning of a new one. This session on Victor was one of the last Cajun string band recordings by a major record label. Not long afterwards, RCA Victor would abandon all things related to Cajun music, probably due to lack of sales nation wide. Independent labels were taking off and Happy would have to look at other outlets, which he did, with J.D. Miller's new independent label called "Fais Do Do" records. But this session has many great moments to enjoy, from "La Valse de Bosco" to the early rockabilly of "Cajun Boogie".Le Neuvo Te Maurice (Victor 2035)Les Veuve A Kita La Coulee (Victor 2035)Cajun Jitterbug (Victor 2321)Sweet Southern Azelea ( Victor 2321)Coosh Mal (Victor 2034)Le Valse De Bosco (Victor 2034)Cajun Boogie (Victor 2200)The Widows Lament (Victor 2200)*All selections from the original 78 rpm records.
While the 1950's and 1960's found the up rise of many independent labels, the first one in Louisiana devoted to Cajun music was started by J.D. Miller. Starting in 1946, J.D. started his first label, Fais Do Do. Over the next couple of episodes, we will devote episodes of the podcast to labels Miller created for Cajun music. Down Home Cajun Music- A Fais Do Do Series 1947-1955 Starting in the late 1940's, J.D. Miller starting recording Cajun French music in Crowley. He first started the Fais Do Do label, there he recorded Happy Fats and Doc Guidry, Lee Sonnier, Jimmie Choates and others. He followed with his Feature label where he recorded Amadie Breaux, the first recordings of the Sundown Playboys, Aldus Roger and Pee Wee Broussard. J.D.'s labels were the first independent Cajun labels in Louisiana giving many artists a platform to record at. He continued recording Cajun French music till around 1955, then shifted his focused on country and blues. 1946-1948 The Return of Cajun Music After World War II, soldiers returning home wanted to hear the music of their youth. While the output of recorded Cajun music in the early 1940's was slim; by 1946 Cajun music returned by way of the birth of independent labels. Among those were Bill Quinn's Gold Star, JD Miller's Fais -Do -Do, Bennie Hess's Opera, and Eddie Shuler's Goldband and Folk-Star label. This week's guest is a great friend of the show, and one helluva guy! Tom O'Connor is a writer, comedian, teacher and Punk Rocker extraordinaire. He just published his eBook, "Ask a Punk!", which you should check out here! DTMM! is back in LA with a live show on February 28th at Fais Do Do featuring Mary Lynn Rajskub (aka Chloe from "24") and the bluegrass band Fiddle and Pine. Tickets are available here. Come out and see us live, you'll be glad you did. And we're planning a return show in NYC, and a Chicago debut. Check out www.donttellmymother.com for updates! Our theme song was written and performed by Steve O'Reilly with lead vocals by Karen Rockower Glass.
Cindy Chupack is one of the most talented and influential writers working in television today. Writer and Executive Producer of "Sex and the City," she's also worked on sich obscure shows as "Modern Family" and "Everybody Loves Raymond." And, yeah, she's won a few Emmys. Cindy joined us for our one-year anniversary show in October, and after hearing her story "Til Death or Homosexuality Do us Part," we fell in love with her even more. Sit back and put your hands together for Cindy Chupack! DTMM! is back in LA with a live show on February 28th at Fais Do Do featuring Mary Lynn Rajskub (aka Chloe from "24"). Tickets are available here. Come out and see us live, you'll be glad you did. ALSO! We are proud to announce the Don't Tell My Mother! We love Jen Kober! An amazing comic and actor, Jen has been seen on "Anger Management" and "The Mindy Project," and she's a mainstay at Don't Tell My Mother!, appearing five times. We don't know why she keeps coming back, but we're glad she does! This time out, Jen opens up about her first love...sliced American cheese. This may actually be the most romantic episode of Don't Tell My Mother! to date. Cue the sexy music and red wine. Thank you to everyone who came out to Fais Do-Do last week for our show with Diane Neal (Law & Order: SVU)! Our next live show is Feb. 28th! Purchase tickets here! ALSO!
