Down Home Cajun Music- Khoury's 700 SeriesThis episode documents the final Cajun recordings on George Khoury's Khoury's label. The Khoury's label began in 1950 and lasted into the 1960's. The 700 series is basically 45 rpm releases beginning with Nathan Abshire's 701 in 1957. Khoury released 6 Cajun records on the 700 series as listed below. But by 1960's, he reissued several of his old 78 rpm recordings on 45 rpm. I've included two examples of those. To me, these are some of the greatest examples of Cajun music in the late 1950's. By the late 1950's the studios improved their sound and the pressings improved. This would lead to other labels releasing great Cajun music in the late 1950's into the 1960's. But Khoury's musical legacy is filled with absolute great music.Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Crying Pine Grove Blues" (Khoury's 701A) 1957Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "LSU French Waltz" (Khoury's 701B) 1957Cleveland Crochet & His Hillbilly Ramblers- "Sha Meon Waltz" (Khoury's 702A) 1957Cleveland Crochet & His Hillbilly Ramblers- "Midnight Blues" (Khoury's 702B) 1957Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Cannonball Special" (Khoury's 704A) 1958Nathan Abshire & His Pine Grove Boys- "Red Rock Waltz" (Khoury's 704B) 1958Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "Perradin Twoster" (Khoury's 709A) 1959Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "Jolie Te Blun" (Khoury's 709B) 1959Blackie Fruge & The Moonlight Serenaders- "Elton Two Step" (Khoury's 725B) 1959Blackie Fruge & The Moonlight Serenaders- "La Robe Barre" (Khoury's 725A) 1959)Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "New Iberia Stomp" (Khoury's 725A) 1960Pee Wee Broussard & The Melody Boys- "La Valse De Bon Amies" (Khoury's 725B) 1960Lawrence Walker & His Wandering Aces- "Evangeline Waltz" (Khoury's 615A) 1951 (45 rpm repress) 1960Lawrence Walker & His Wandering Aces- "Johnny Can't Dance" (Khoury's 615B) 1951 (45 rpm repress) 1960 Nathan Abshire & His Musical Five- "La Waltz A Belezere" (Khoury's 610A)(45 rpm repress) 1960Nathan Abshire & His Musical Five- " "Choupique Two Step" (Khoury's 610B)(45 rpm repress) 1960

Cleoma Falcon (1906-1941) was a Cajun musician from French-speaking Louisiana. A groundbreaking artist – and one of the few women from her culture who were performing live at the time – she helped define the Cajun genre and popularize it beyond Cajun country. For Further Reading: Breaux Cleoma Falcon by Music Rising at Tulane Overlooked No More: Cléoma Falcon, Queen of Cajun Music by The New York Times Cleoma Breaux Falcon by 64 Parishes This month, we're pulling back the curtain to reveal women overlooked in their own lifetimes or in our historical accounts of the eras in which they lived. We're talking about the activists, thinkers, leaders, artists, and innovators history has forgotten. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. On this Wonder Media Network podcast we explore the lives of inspiring women in history you may not know about, but definitely should. Every weekday, listeners explore the trials, tragedies, and triumphs of groundbreaking women throughout history who have dramatically shaped the world around us. In each 5 minute episode, we'll dive into the story behind one woman listeners may or may not know–but definitely should. These diverse women from across space and time are grouped into easily accessible and engaging monthly themes like Educators, Villains, Indigenous Storytellers, Activists, and many more. Womanica is hosted by WMN co-founder and award-winning journalist Jenny Kaplan. The bite-sized episodes pack painstakingly researched content into fun, entertaining, and addictive daily adventures. Womanica was created by Liz Kaplan and Jenny Kaplan, executive produced by Jenny Kaplan, and produced by Grace Lynch, Maddy Foley, Brittany Martinez, Edie Allard, Lindsey Kratochwill, Adesuwa Agbonile, Carmen Borca-Carrillo, Taylor Williamson, Sara Schleede, Paloma Moreno Jimenez, and Abbey Delk. Sometimes life comes full circle. In this episode of For Songs, I welcome back Louisiana-based singer/songwriter Louis Michot of the traditional Cajun band the Lost Bayou Ramblers. Louis first appeared on the show in Fall 2020, at the height of the pandemic. He didn't know it at the time but he was in the midst of writing and recording his first solo album. Three years later, Louis has just released Reve du Troubadour, which is Cajun French for Troubadour's Dream (https://www.louismichot.com/). In this episode, Louis discusses how those eerie first few months of the pandemic resulted in creative output that even surprised him. Although the album is entirely sung in Cajun French, the songs span a much wider range. You'll hear Lee “Scratch” Perry. You'll hear the Pogues, you'll hear classical music. You'll hear…well, you get the point. In addition the music, you're also going to learn something. Louis is as much of a historian as he is a musician, and some of his songs will make you uncomfortable. Learning about the past can be difficult, but that's the point. So sit back and listen as Louis takes us through Reve du Troubadour (https://louismichot.bandcamp.com/album/r-ve-du-troubadour).

Wilson Savoy, Grammy-winning accordionist, keyboard player, fiddler and singer joins Discover Lafayette to share his life's musical journey. Wilson hails from the renowned musical family, the Savoy Family Cajun Band. He plays with The Pine Leaf Boys and performs solo as Sweet Willy Allen. Wilson co-owns the Hideaway on Lee in downtown Lafayette and Hideaway Hall, the former Schilling Shack. Wilson Savoy is laid-back and humble. A resident of North Lafayette, he spends time utilizing his carpentry skills when he is not performing his beloved Cajun music. As we spoke, he reflected on how serendipity led to his successful career as a Cajun musician, harkening back to a fateful day in 2004 when UL-Lafayette police told him he could not perform his music on the sidewalk on campus. Within days, he was being offered opportunities to play at Artmosphere and the Blue Moon Saloon, which led to great career success and critical acclaim. In Roots of Fire, a soon-to-be-released film, Wilson, his brother Joel, Kelli Jones, Kristi Guillory and Jourdan Thibodeaux honor the rich history and cultural legacy of Cajun music. The Cajun contemporary scene in Louisiana has found mainstream success with Grammy nominations and wins, but shuttering venues and an aging fan base leave some questioning the music's future. The film is a celebration of the unique sounds created when the forces of fresh talent and deep history come together to fight for cultural survival. Featuring performances from the Pine Leaf Boys, Feufollet, Jourdan Thibodeaux et Les Rôdailleurs, Bonsoir Catin, T'Monde, Anna Laura Edmiston and Roddie Romero, Roots of Fire shows how playing 'kick-ass' music and preserving Cajun tradition for future generations can be a shared goal.

Down Home Cajun Music- Down Home Cajun Music- Amede Ardoin & Dennis McGee Part Two On this episode we look at Part Two of Amede Ardoin and Dennis McGee's recordings, ending with their 1930 recordings. Their music represents some of the most intense music ever produced out of the pre war era. Their style was unmatched, and their music went on to influence Cajun music even up to today.
