This was the trip that served as a blueprint for building a lifestyle of travel and adventure. Passion met purpose when Jon began constructing his future in service to a cause - the water crisis. Instead of only catching waves as a surfer, he began making waves as a humanitarian. This week's My Mission Is… podcast guest is Jon Rose, the founder of Waves for Water (W4W), a nonprofit organization working to bring clean water to everyone who needs it. Rose's life as a pro surfer served as a catalyst for his clean water initiative. Helping over 4 million people, Rose sees his work as more than just giving back; it's a way of life. In this week's episode, Rose talks with Mission's founder and editor-in-chief Karina Givargisoff about the “divine intervention” that sparked his passion for water access, the pivotal moments he's experienced throughout this journey, and why bringing clean water to different countries is not one-size fits all. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mission-magazine/support

Follow ex-pro surfer Jon Rose on his ultimate adventure horse trekking through the remote wilderness of Mongolia. This is the 'Land of the Blue Sky', a place of limitless space, and boundless freedom, where bands of nomadic families still live the old way, tending livestock and moving with the seasons. But this is more than just a story of adventure; and it's about more than horse trekking in Mongolia too. This is a story about destiny. It's a story about hope, and the power of the human spirit.Jon Rose spent 12 years as a professional free surfer. He appeared on the covers of the biggest magazines in the world. He rode swells in Australia, Bali, Fiji; he surfed South Africa, Iceland and more. But his favourite place was Indonesia, and it was there, on a surf trip, that something happened that changed his life forever. Something harrowing, and devastating, something he could never have expected. But in that moment, Jon found his destiny. He found his life's true purpose. It wasn't to ride waves, it was something much bigger. It would take him from the shores of Indonesia to the streets of Haiti. It would take him from the mountains of Nepal to the endless plains of Mongolia, and beyond. And it wouldn't change just life, it would change the lives of millions of people around the world. In the first episode of Swell Season Surf Radio for 2018, we have a very special interview that was conducted in 2012. Co-Host, Tyler Breuer, had the fortunate opportunity to Interview Tom Curren and the late Sonny Miller in front of a live audience in 2012. The event was a fundraiser for Hurricane Sandy Relief and was truly a special evening. It is the only recorded interview with Tom and Sonny. It would also be their last interview together as Sonny had passed away a year later. This interview took place following the first ever theater screening of "Searching For Tom Curren" and the crowd was stoked! The Sound quality might not be the best but, the stories and anecdotes that are told are worth a listen. Big thanks goes out to Waves for Water’s Jon Rose and Pilgrim Surf & Supplies Chris Gentile for organizing such an amazing night all those years ago. Sit back and enjoy…
