Show Notes Episode 468: There's A Light Over at the LaLaurie Place Spooktacular 2024 Finale This week Host Dave Bledsoe drunkenly declares that every day is Mardi Gras while offering strings of beads in exchange for being shown breasts. (The bouncers took the beads, and took Dave's shirt off while tossing him out.) On the show this week we conclude Spooktacular 2024 with the story of the most haunted house in the most haunted city in America: The LaLaurie Mansion. Along the way we learn that while Dave once attended Mardi Gras in New Orleans he can't really tell you anything about it. (Because he was black out drunk.) Then we dive right into a brief history of New Orleans from the first native Americans to all the times it changed hands before being purchased by Thomas Jefferson for some Mardi Gras beads and the recipe for the Hurricane. (Allegedly). Then we dig into the story of Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie. (This is NOT a happy story) and life in her New Orleans mansion. (Seriously, there is a lot of brutal shit in this story, so you WERE warned.) Finally, there is some stuff about ghosts. Our Sponsor this week is the Committee Representing American Paranormal Persons, shining a light on the unseen! We open with breathless discussion of the mansion and close with Chloé Lexia Worthington shining a light on things. 592. Today we talk to author Carolyn Morrow Long about two of her books, one on Marie Laveau and the other on Madame LaLaurie. A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau. "Legendary for an unusual combination of spiritual power, beauty, charisma, showmanship, intimidation, and shrewd business sense, Marie Leveau also was known for her kindness and charity, nursing yellow fever victims and ministering to condemned prisoners, and her devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. In separating verifiable fact from semi-truths and complete fabrication, Carolyn Morrow Long explores the unique social, political, and legal setting in which the lives of Laveau's African and European ancestors became intertwined in nineteenth-century New Orleans." Madame Lalaurie, Mistress of the Haunted House. "A meticulous researcher of New Orleans history, Carolyn Long disentangles the threads of fact and legend that have intertwined over the decades. Was Madame Lalaurie a sadistic abuser? Mentally ill? Or merely the victim of an unfair and sensationalist press? Using carefully documented eyewitness testimony, archival documents, and family letters, Long recounts Lalaurie's life from legal troubles before the fire through the scandal of her exile to France to her death in Paris in 1849." "She literally shoved someone's head into the mirror and it cracked and fell off the wall; then the bar had to replace it. You took me willingly to this bar? Oh yeah it's great!" If there's one thing Christi and Stephen can't seem to avoid it's haunted bars and houses around New Orleans. It wasn't enough that there were vampires, but now there's ghosts in the French Quarter too?! We promise to cover other cities at some point, but NOLA is just too spooky not to cover in more detail. I mean the realtors literally will promote on their For Sale signs if a house is haunted or not, it's serious business! Is it any wonder why Disney chose to put The Haunted Mansion in the New Orleans Square section of Disney? As Stephen gives tours around New Orleans, he hears a lot of first hand accounts of ghost sightings directly from his clients. Whether they're passing out in front of the infamous home of serial killer Madame LaLaurie or seeing Bloody Mary in a bar mirror, it's hard not to get the sense that something truly wicked is in the air that isn't just the humidity. Tune-in to hear some of Stephen's haunted highlights on this week's installment of Beyond the Norm and you too may feel a chill crawling up your spine!Quotes“I have to stop you, hold on. I have to yell at you. You didn't tell the whole fucking LaLaurie story! you talked about them buying back the slaves, you didn't talk about the night of the fire. Stephen that is the part of the LaLaurie story that makes people's jaws hit the floor. (...) She was just mutilating these people and basically they were torn from limb to limb in the atic. I guess I just totally B-lined around that. Yeah, you just forgot about the massive experimental torture!” (12:43-14:21 | Christi & Stephen)“It felt like... you know when aa gust of wind behind you kind of like pushes you? And I don't want to say it like grabbed my ass, but... Stephen! The ghost did not grab your ass." (23:40-23:52 | Christi & Stephen)“If you come with a group of girls (to New Orleans) and you're that one bitch that's like, 'My feet hurt I'm ruining the night!' because you didn't listen to us and wear tennis shoes, you're friends are going to hate you." It's been 10 years since American Horror Story: Coven. I played one of Kathy Bates' Madame LaLaurie's daughters. I had two sisters, played by Ashlynn Ross and Jennifer Lynn Warren. This interview marks the first time the three of us have all been together in the last 10 years. We're talking all about our favorite memories from working on the show, our on-set injuries, the absurdity of playing some of the more outlandish scenes from the show (including one of Ashlynn's scenes that Ryan Murphy allegedly called "the most f*cked up thing" they had ever done), and what every transplant learns about the perils of smoking in California. We're also talking about what we've learned in the last 10 years about showbiz, life, and the big reason why actors make great directors.Join Patreon to support the show and see bonus videos from this episode: https://www.patreon.com/raedenSubscribe on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@raedengreerWatch the full video of this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/i5_hJSf0-vAUse discount code PRETENDER at checkout for 15% off your order from Three Spirit Elixirs. It's said that there are a lot of dark spirits in New Orleans. It might be one of the most haunted cities in the entire world and one story that the city can't seem to escape is that of Madame LaLaurie. The rumors go like this - she tortured her victims and experimented on them. It's said she liked to drill skulls into victims' heads and insert spoons inside so she could “stir their brains.” It's said that she would stick ash, feces, and other vile things into the victim's mouths, ears, and eyes, and sew them shut. Another disturbing rumor was that she would cut holes into their stomachs, pull out their intestines, and wrap them around their bodies like belts. Whatever the rumors were, the truth was much worse in the haunted LaLaurie mansion in New Orleans. Full Source Notes: rottenmangopodcast.com This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. In 2013, Kathy Bates played the evil New Orleans socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie in American Horror Story: Coven. Although the character had many embellishments and false storylines, Madame LaLaurie was a very much a real person. Living in the height of society in 1834, Madame LaLaurie becomes the most hated woman in New Orleans in a single, terrible night. Her mansion of terrors still stands on Royal Street in the French Quarter and this week, we will talk about why her home is a stop on any haunted tour.

On April 10, 1834, a fire broke out at the lavish French Quarter mansion of Delphine and Dr. Louis LaLaurie. What rescuers found behind the locked doors of the upstairs servant's wing shocked and enraged the people of New Orleans. What drove a spoiled socialite and a mild-mannered physician to such depravity? In this episode, we cover the background of the two, the events leading up to the tragedy, and what became of them and their victims in the aftermath, as well as hauntings at the LaLaurie mansion. We had a blast doing a live show at Fan Expo Philadelphia! We talked about Nic Cage and that time he bought a serial killer's home. He purchased the LaLaurie mansion located at 1138 Royal St in New Orleans in 2007 for $3.4 million with the plans to use the house as the perfect inspiration to write the “great American horror novel”. He only stayed one night. He could hear all sorts of ghostly noises throughout the night, & these sounds & disturbances scared him so much, that he rented a place across the street. In Nic Cage's words: “I didn't get too far with the novel”Sources: wanderingcrystal.com, koimoi.com, notebookofghosts.com, nolaghosts.com, allthatsinteresting.com, ghostcitytours.com, vanityfair.com, atlasobscura.com, nytimes.com, independent.co.uk###Follow Us:https://www.paranormalpunchers.comhttps://twitter.com/ppunchershttps://instagram.com/paranormalpunchershttps://www.facebook.com/paranormalpunchersSupport the Show:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/paranormal-punchershttps://www.patreon.com/paranormalpunchers
Jill has been waiting to tell this story for a long time, Madame LaLaurie and her husband Dr. Louis LaLaurie are kept alive every night in New Orleans, through the retelling of their horrible atrocities and crimes committed against their enslaved people. Hard to tell what's truth and what's fiction, or at the very least embellished truth, but that's New Orleans! Jill stumbles through French pronunciations and pimps out her favorite sandwich shop in the Quarter (shout out to Verti Marte), and the girls talk about the horrible things that this society couple did.Remember to RATE, REVIEW, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE!Follow us on Instagram @medimesspodJoin our Facebook group: MediMess: A True Crime PodcastSend us a gmail at medimesspod@gmail.comSources:Shannon, Lorelei; Cosner Love, Victoria. The story of the Lalaurie mansion in New Orleans is part true atrocity tale and part urban legend, so naturally, it ended up as a ghost story. In this episode, Matt discusses how these legends form, how they can misinform us about the past, and how ghost stories can sometimes soothe us into a false sense of security about who we are and what values we hold. In this week's episode, Sandra talks about the Myrtles Plantation located in St. Francisville, Louisiana. It was built in 1796 by General David Bradford on 600 acres, and was named "Laurel Grove."Supposedly this is the most haunted plantation in the United States. Today it is a popular bed and breakfast and most well known for one particular ghost that goes by the name Chloe. Then, Danielle covers the infamous serial killer, Madame Delphine LaLaurie from New Orleans. A once-respected lady of society, her image was tarnished when her mansion was found to be an actual house of horrors. From servants in the attic who were tortured beyond recognition to servants who chose to leap to their deaths to avoid LaLaurie's punishment. Listen to the details of the gruesome ways she would torture her servants and even her own family.

Marie Delphine LaLaurie was America's first female serial killer and In a lot of ways, she is the female version of HH Holmes. LaLaurie had her own version of a murder mansion, where her slaves became her victims but her crimes were committed almost 100 years before that of HH Holmes and Jack the Ripper. She was portrayed by the great Cathy Bates in AHS Coven and her mansion where she committed her atrocious murders and tortures is one of the most widely visited tourist attractions in New Orleans, and in all of Louisiana for that matter. LaLaurie would torture, mutilate, starve and even perform horrendous experiments on her victims. Join me and my guest host as we discuss the life and crimes of Marie Delphine LaLaurie and I share with you what it was like visiting her mansion in person as well as other macabre sites in New Orleans.
