In this episode of When Killers Get Caught, Brittany Ransom revisits one of the most infamous figures in New Orleans history Delphine LaLaurie, also known as The Beast of Royal Street.Long before the fire that exposed her mansion in 1834, Madame LaLaurie was a wealthy Creole socialite living at the center of elite New Orleans society. But behind the elegance, dinner parties, and political connections, neighbors whispered about missing servants, unexplained injuries, and a house that felt increasingly disturbing to those around it.This episode breaks down the full timeline of the LaLaurie case from her rise in high society and powerful marriages, to the growing allegations of abuse inside her Royal Street mansion, and ultimately the night everything changed. We cover:Her elite Creole upbringing and powerful family connections in New OrleansThe three marriages that expanded her wealth and influenceEarly red flags reported by neighbors and enslaved workersThe 1834 Royal Street fire and what was discovered inside the atticThe violent public response and her escape from New OrleansWhat is fact, what is legend, and how her story became mythologized over timeWe also examine how the LaLaurie case reflects broader systems of power, slavery, and legal protection in 19th-century Louisiana and why her story continues to be retold nearly 200 years later. Some say she was a monster. Others say she was a product of her time. But the truth, as always, is more complicated and far more unsettling than fiction.Because in cases like this… the truth always leaves a trail.Follow and join the conversation:

In April 1834, a massive fire broke out at the mansion of Delphine LaLaurie on Royal Street in New Orleans French Quarter. LaLaurie was known to have kept several slaves as servants in the home, but when bystanders attempted to enter the house to rescue those trapped inside, they found the doors barred. After forcing the doors open and making their way inside the house, the rescuers were horrified to find the “horribly mutilated” bodies of at least seven of LaLaurie's slaves. Delphine LaLaurie was known to treat her servants very badly, including physically abusing them, but no one in New Orleans had imagined she was a sadistic murderer. After the discovery of the horrors in the LaLaurie mansion, Delphine LaLaurie fled New Orleans, fearing mob violence, and lived the rest of her life as an exile in Paris—but that is not the end of the story. Just a few decades after LaLaurie abandoned her home and fled the country, her story and those of the men, women, and children who suffered in her home worked their way into New Orleans folklore. Today, nearly two hundred years later, the LaLaurie mansion has become known as the most haunted house in New Orleans, and the legend of Delphine LaLaurie has lived on through television, film, and books about Mad Madame LaLaurie. A house can be rebuilt. A reputation can't. On a corner in the French Quarter, 1140 Royal Street sits like a beautiful lie—an elegant façade wrapped around a story so brutal it keeps rewriting itself. This isn't a ghost story. It's what happens when a city tries to wallpaper over a crime… and the walls won't stop remembering. Arthur couldn't be with us as we recorded the episode, so he recorded his parts early and danged if it don't sound like he was there with us! Arthur was starting on his first shift at McDonald's and was happy with his first day of work. He mentions it in his corner. Meanwhile Dad, Mom and Brenda discuss Delphine LaLaurie, her life and strangeness and how cruel she was to her slaves. We also discuss the wider specter of slavery, suggest perhaps some reasons for her crueltties (not that she deserves our kindness) and try to sift out the truth from what has been so buried in folklore and tales for tourists when we get down to the nitty gritty in this tales for tourists be damned episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

Show Notes Episode 468: There's A Light Over at the LaLaurie Place Spooktacular 2024 Finale This week Host Dave Bledsoe drunkenly declares that every day is Mardi Gras while offering strings of beads in exchange for being shown breasts. (The bouncers took the beads, and took Dave's shirt off while tossing him out.) On the show this week we conclude Spooktacular 2024 with the story of the most haunted house in the most haunted city in America: The LaLaurie Mansion. Along the way we learn that while Dave once attended Mardi Gras in New Orleans he can't really tell you anything about it. (Because he was black out drunk.) Then we dive right into a brief history of New Orleans from the first native Americans to all the times it changed hands before being purchased by Thomas Jefferson for some Mardi Gras beads and the recipe for the Hurricane. (Allegedly). Then we dig into the story of Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie. (This is NOT a happy story) and life in her New Orleans mansion. (Seriously, there is a lot of brutal shit in this story, so you WERE warned.) Finally, there is some stuff about ghosts. Our Sponsor this week is the Committee Representing American Paranormal Persons, shining a light on the unseen! We open with breathless discussion of the mansion and close with Chloé Lexia Worthington shining a light on things. 592. Today we talk to author Carolyn Morrow Long about two of her books, one on Marie Laveau and the other on Madame LaLaurie. A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau. "Legendary for an unusual combination of spiritual power, beauty, charisma, showmanship, intimidation, and shrewd business sense, Marie Leveau also was known for her kindness and charity, nursing yellow fever victims and ministering to condemned prisoners, and her devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. In separating verifiable fact from semi-truths and complete fabrication, Carolyn Morrow Long explores the unique social, political, and legal setting in which the lives of Laveau's African and European ancestors became intertwined in nineteenth-century New Orleans." Madame Lalaurie, Mistress of the Haunted House. "A meticulous researcher of New Orleans history, Carolyn Long disentangles the threads of fact and legend that have intertwined over the decades. Was Madame Lalaurie a sadistic abuser? Mentally ill? Or merely the victim of an unfair and sensationalist press? Using carefully documented eyewitness testimony, archival documents, and family letters, Long recounts Lalaurie's life from legal troubles before the fire through the scandal of her exile to France to her death in Paris in 1849." "She literally shoved someone's head into the mirror and it cracked and fell off the wall; then the bar had to replace it. You took me willingly to this bar? Oh yeah it's great!" If there's one thing Christi and Stephen can't seem to avoid it's haunted bars and houses around New Orleans. It wasn't enough that there were vampires, but now there's ghosts in the French Quarter too?! We promise to cover other cities at some point, but NOLA is just too spooky not to cover in more detail. I mean the realtors literally will promote on their For Sale signs if a house is haunted or not, it's serious business! Is it any wonder why Disney chose to put The Haunted Mansion in the New Orleans Square section of Disney? As Stephen gives tours around New Orleans, he hears a lot of first hand accounts of ghost sightings directly from his clients. Whether they're passing out in front of the infamous home of serial killer Madame LaLaurie or seeing Bloody Mary in a bar mirror, it's hard not to get the sense that something truly wicked is in the air that isn't just the humidity. Tune-in to hear some of Stephen's haunted highlights on this week's installment of Beyond the Norm and you too may feel a chill crawling up your spine!Quotes“I have to stop you, hold on. I have to yell at you. You didn't tell the whole fucking LaLaurie story! you talked about them buying back the slaves, you didn't talk about the night of the fire. Stephen that is the part of the LaLaurie story that makes people's jaws hit the floor. (...) She was just mutilating these people and basically they were torn from limb to limb in the atic. I guess I just totally B-lined around that. Yeah, you just forgot about the massive experimental torture!” (12:43-14:21 | Christi & Stephen)“It felt like... you know when aa gust of wind behind you kind of like pushes you? And I don't want to say it like grabbed my ass, but... Stephen! The ghost did not grab your ass." (23:40-23:52 | Christi & Stephen)“If you come with a group of girls (to New Orleans) and you're that one bitch that's like, 'My feet hurt I'm ruining the night!' because you didn't listen to us and wear tennis shoes, you're friends are going to hate you." (37:18-37:27 | Stephen)“She has artifacts, she has like... well I don't want to give it away. She gave me a raccoon dick.” (45:43-45:50 | Christi & Stephen) LinksSubscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/BeyondtheNormPodcastFollow Christi on IG: www.instagram.com/christilukasiakFollow Stephen on IG: www.instagram.com/s_c_mayo Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. It's been 10 years since American Horror Story: Coven. I played one of Kathy Bates' Madame LaLaurie's daughters. I had two sisters, played by Ashlynn Ross and Jennifer Lynn Warren. This interview marks the first time the three of us have all been together in the last 10 years. We're talking all about our favorite memories from working on the show, our on-set injuries, the absurdity of playing some of the more outlandish scenes from the show (including one of Ashlynn's scenes that Ryan Murphy allegedly called "the most f*cked up thing" they had ever done), and what every transplant learns about the perils of smoking in California. We're also talking about what we've learned in the last 10 years about showbiz, life, and the big reason why actors make great directors.Join Patreon to support the show and see bonus videos from this episode: https://www.patreon.com/raedenSubscribe on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@raedengreerWatch the full video of this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/i5_hJSf0-vAUse discount code PRETENDER at checkout for 15% off your order from Three Spirit Elixirs. It's said that there are a lot of dark spirits in New Orleans. It might be one of the most haunted cities in the entire world and one story that the city can't seem to escape is that of Madame LaLaurie. The rumors go like this - she tortured her victims and experimented on them. It's said she liked to drill skulls into victims' heads and insert spoons inside so she could “stir their brains.” It's said that she would stick ash, feces, and other vile things into the victim's mouths, ears, and eyes, and sew them shut. Another disturbing rumor was that she would cut holes into their stomachs, pull out their intestines, and wrap them around their bodies like belts. Whatever the rumors were, the truth was much worse in the haunted LaLaurie mansion in New Orleans. Full Source Notes: rottenmangopodcast.com This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. This week we talk about a haunted house of horrors and the possible discovery of an electronic cryptid.
A rare beauty and New Orleans socialite, Delphine, from the outside, was the perfect picture of Creole aristocracy. A gracious hostess, a wife and mother, a wealthy landowner kind to her slaves...except...she wasn't. Instead, behind closed doors, she was a monster. The LaLaurie mansion has been a famous haunted place in New Orleans for over 100 years. The reason? A serial killer lived inside. This house has seen horrific things done by the hands of Madam LaLaurie who did awful things to other human beings. In 2013, Kathy Bates played the evil New Orleans socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie in American Horror Story: Coven. Although the character had many embellishments and false storylines, Madame LaLaurie was a very much a real person. Living in the height of society in 1834, Madame LaLaurie becomes the most hated woman in New Orleans in a single, terrible night. Her mansion of terrors still stands on Royal Street in the French Quarter and this week, we will talk about why her home is a stop on any haunted tour.
After that very intense Gacy two parter, we needed a break. This week, I drop the Classic Open Shudders episode, Madam LaLaurie and Her House of Horrors, one of the most haunted houses in America. Madam Marie Delphine LaLaurie, a New Orleans Creole socialite was one of the most notorious serial killers in history. The atrocities she committed on her enslaved servantsare horrible beyond compare. On April 10, 1834, a fire broke out at the lavish French Quarter mansion of Delphine and Dr. Louis LaLaurie. What rescuers found behind the locked doors of the upstairs servant's wing shocked and enraged the people of New Orleans. What drove a spoiled socialite and a mild-mannered physician to such depravity? In this episode, we cover the background of the two, the events leading up to the tragedy, and what became of them and their victims in the aftermath, as well as hauntings at the LaLaurie mansion. We had a blast doing a live show at Fan Expo Philadelphia! We talked about Nic Cage and that time he bought a serial killer's home. He purchased the LaLaurie mansion located at 1138 Royal St in New Orleans in 2007 for $3.4 million with the plans to use the house as the perfect inspiration to write the “great American horror novel”. He only stayed one night. He could hear all sorts of ghostly noises throughout the night, & these sounds & disturbances scared him so much, that he rented a place across the street. Jill has been waiting to tell this story for a long time, Madame LaLaurie and her husband Dr. Louis LaLaurie are kept alive every night in New Orleans, through the retelling of their horrible atrocities and crimes committed against their enslaved people. The story of the Lalaurie mansion in New Orleans is part true atrocity tale and part urban legend, so naturally, it ended up as a ghost story. In this episode, Matt discusses how these legends form, how they can misinform us about the past, and how ghost stories can sometimes soothe us into a false sense of security about who we are and what values we hold. One night in 1834, a fire swept through the LaLaurie mansion in New Orleans, drawing a crowd of worried onlookers. Until then, Delphine LaLaurie had been a queen of Creole society, but what volunteers found inside her home as they rushed to help would change all that. This is the story of what really happened that night, and about the birth of a monstrous legend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
