592. Today we talk to author Carolyn Morrow Long about two of her books, one on Marie Laveau and the other on Madame LaLaurie. A New Orleans Voudou Priestess: The Legend and Reality of Marie Laveau. "Legendary for an unusual combination of spiritual power, beauty, charisma, showmanship, intimidation, and shrewd business sense, Marie Leveau also was known for her kindness and charity, nursing yellow fever victims and ministering to condemned prisoners, and her devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. In separating verifiable fact from semi-truths and complete fabrication, Carolyn Morrow Long explores the unique social, political, and legal setting in which the lives of Laveau's African and European ancestors became intertwined in nineteenth-century New Orleans."      Madame Lalaurie, Mistress of the Haunted House. "A meticulous researcher of New Orleans history, Carolyn Long disentangles the threads of fact and legend that have intertwined over the decades. Was Madame Lalaurie a sadistic abuser? Mentally ill? Or merely the victim of an unfair and sensationalist press? Using carefully documented eyewitness testimony, archival documents, and family letters, Long recounts Lalaurie's life from legal troubles before the fire through the scandal of her exile to France to her death in Paris in 1849." "She literally shoved someone's head into the mirror and it cracked and fell off the wall; then the bar had to replace it. You took me willingly to this bar? Oh yeah it's great!" If there's one thing Christi and Stephen can't seem to avoid it's haunted bars and houses around New Orleans. It wasn't enough that there were vampires, but now there's ghosts in the French Quarter too?! We promise to cover other cities at some point, but NOLA is just too spooky not to cover in more detail. I mean the realtors literally will promote on their For Sale signs if a house is haunted or not, it's serious business! Is it any wonder why Disney chose to put The Haunted Mansion in the New Orleans Square section of Disney? As Stephen gives tours around New Orleans, he hears a lot of first hand accounts of ghost sightings directly from his clients. Whether they're passing out in front of the infamous home of serial killer Madame LaLaurie or seeing Bloody Mary in a bar mirror, it's hard not to get the sense that something truly wicked is in the air that isn't just the humidity. Tune-in to hear some of Stephen's haunted highlights on this week's installment of Beyond the Norm and you too may feel a chill crawling up your spine!Quotes“I have to stop you, hold on. I have to yell at you. You didn't tell the whole fucking LaLaurie story! you talked about them buying back the slaves, you didn't talk about the night of the fire. Stephen that is the part of the LaLaurie story that makes people's jaws hit the floor. (...) She was just mutilating these people and basically they were torn from limb to limb in the atic. I guess I just totally B-lined around that. Yeah, you just forgot about the massive experimental torture!” (12:43-14:21 | Christi & Stephen)“It felt like... you know when aa gust of wind behind you kind of like pushes you? And I don't want to say it like grabbed my ass, but... Stephen! The ghost did not grab your ass." (23:40-23:52 | Christi & Stephen)“If you come with a group of girls (to New Orleans) and you're that one bitch that's like, 'My feet hurt I'm ruining the night!' because you didn't listen to us and wear tennis shoes, you're friends are going to hate you." (37:18-37:27 | Stephen)“She has artifacts, she has like... well I don't want to give it away. The imposing gray three-story edifice known as the “haunted house” looms fortress-like on the corner of Royal and Governor Nicholls streets in the French Quarter. Now a famous landmark, the home was once home to Madame Lalaurie who, in the early 1830s, starved and tortured her slaves and was hounded out of town by an angry mob when a fire revealed her misdeeds. Over time the story has been embellished with increasingly gruesome details, but archival research reveals that at least some of it is true. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/patrick-conn/support

TW: This week we discuss the brutal murder and torture of enslaved persons in the U.S. in the 1800s. Upon further research (unfortunately after the recording of the episode), Ash found that "slave" is no longer a politically correct term, but it IS used throughout the episode. If that word or the subject matter is particularly upsetting to you, you might want to skip this one.Happy Black History Month! This definitely isn't a happy story, but this history is very important. This week we travel back to 2021 (and then the 1800s), where Ash, former co-host Cameron Dexter and former audio engineer Evette Darensbourg discuss infamous socialite and serial torturer and murderer of enslaved people, Delphine LaLaurie. You may know who today's story is about if you're a fan of American Horror Story, and especially if you watched Season 3, Coven! Ash takes you back to the Deep South of the 1800s. The slave trade was booming and the brutal mistreatment of enslaved people was rampant. It was common for slave owners to treat their enslaved people particularly savagely for fear of uprising. But one woman in particular took that practice to a whole new level of depravity. Madame LaLaurie was a socialite and central figure in New Orleans high society, but rumors had long circulated about her treatment of her enslaved people. When a fire broke out at 1140 Royal Street on April 10, 1834, first responders found a 70 year old woman chained to the stove by her ankle, with a deep wound in her head, and people would soon find out the extent to which she tortured, and inevitably murdered, many of her enslaved people.✨If you wanna get your TSFU episodes ad free and on Tuesdays instead of Fridays, check out our Patreon! Madame Delphine LaLaurie had a sorted past from birth. But in 1834 when her massive mansion in New Orleans caught fire, the truth of her misdeeds finally came to light. Known around by some to be cruel to her slaves, if hearsay is true, that became an understatement when found beneath the smoke and ashes were slaves that had been tortured, abused, if still alive, or left to rot still chained even after death. Madame LaLaurie was never apprehended for her crimes, but her infamy lives on within the bowels of 1140 Royal Street where spirits of the damned can still be seen & heard. It's been 10 years since American Horror Story: Coven. I played one of Kathy Bates' Madame LaLaurie's daughters. I had two sisters, played by Ashlynn Ross and Jennifer Lynn Warren. This interview marks the first time the three of us have all been together in the last 10 years. We're talking all about our favorite memories from working on the show, our on-set injuries, the absurdity of playing some of the more outlandish scenes from the show (including one of Ashlynn's scenes that Ryan Murphy allegedly called "the most f*cked up thing" they had ever done), and what every transplant learns about the perils of smoking in California. We're also talking about what we've learned in the last 10 years about showbiz, life, and the big reason why actors make great directors.Join Patreon to support the show and see bonus videos from this episode: https://www.patreon.com/raedenSubscribe on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@raedengreerWatch the full video of this episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/i5_hJSf0-vAUse discount code PRETENDER at checkout for 15% off your order from Three Spirit Elixirs. It's said that there are a lot of dark spirits in New Orleans. It might be one of the most haunted cities in the entire world and one story that the city can't seem to escape is that of Madame LaLaurie. The rumors go like this - she tortured her victims and experimented on them. It's said she liked to drill skulls into victims' heads and insert spoons inside so she could “stir their brains.” It's said that she would stick ash, feces, and other vile things into the victim's mouths, ears, and eyes, and sew them shut. Another disturbing rumor was that she would cut holes into their stomachs, pull out their intestines, and wrap them around their bodies like belts. Whatever the rumors were, the truth was much worse in the haunted LaLaurie mansion in New Orleans. Full Source Notes: rottenmangopodcast.com This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp.
