On this week's episode, Heather and Kalyn may have done something they said they wouldn't do and may have talked about the (GASP) current state of the real estate market! But don't worry, they brought in the expert and also possibly the sweetest guest yet? Steve Harding, lender extraordinaire with First Financial Bank joined the girls to talk about everything from the 3 days he spent in college to how he got to where he is today (spoiler alert: it's a love story). They talk about how WINTER IS COMING but also touch on some things buyers can do in this current market to combat the higher rates. And once again, Steve brought the VOICE to the podcast! Thank you again to our sponsor, Richard Johnston with the Johnston Insurance Agency!
On this week's episode, the guest brought the goods! Heather and Kalyn interviewed friend and Certified Residential Appraiser, Grant Bullinger for a roller coaster ride of emotions and stories. From 6,000 square feet condos with secret doll rooms to unmentionable adult battery operated devices present during appraisals, Grant has truly seen it all. Giving us a thorough understanding of what appraisers face on a daily basis, the hosts are enlightened on how the residential appraisal is created and that not all appraisers are trying to kill real estate deals. You'll laugh and learn some things but stick around until the end - Grant truly saved the best stories for last. Thank you to our sponsor, Richard Johnston with Johnston Insurance Agency!

"When a painter is obsessed by a view or an idea, no wind, no elements can stop him" - Gustave de StaelWelcome to Episode #33This little foray into the south of France was a delight to write up once the writing process began. I couldn't hold back but take a deep dive into the French Riveria and its artistic legacy which indeed is quite vast. When I discovered a few years back that the Picasso Museum was on the train line somewhere between Nice and Marseille in France well it was a given. There is much to say that is undoubtable and there a number of directions one could go in. In truth Antibes, Juan Les Pins came on my radar over the past few years after reading about Pablo Picasso and Francoise Gilot. Later I discovered the writings of Picasso's biographer John Richardson and the film Surviving Picasso. This particular share is full of Art and Life, mine and theirs, and of course the joy of a family day free to travel in the delightful city of Antibes on the Cote D'Azur; something I would recommend to any one who loves a deep blue sky and a seascape that travel dreams are made of.© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, books, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Please find all Show Notes and details mentioned at: michellejohnston.lifeInstagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__Support the show (http://michellejohnston.life)

“You may have the universe if I may have Italy” Giuseppe Verdi, ComposerWelcome to Episode 32:We are not the first and we will not be the last. The magnetic forces of Italy are powerful luring us from the comfort of our own homes and countries to dream, to ponder, to move, to see, to experience a culture that shows us a beautiful way to live. It is a sensual life that is deeply layered. Many of us would like a taste of it, a few weeks, a few months, perhaps a lifetime. Italy is a beacon, a radiant beauty that has many of us within its grasp. ‘Italophilia: the admiration, appreciation or emulation of Italy, its people, ideals, civilisation, and culture'.Last month I shared some time with travel blogger Ishita Sood from her home in India. We talked about everything that mattered in our lives right now in the middle of the pandemic and getting back to la grande bellezza was high on both of our lists. It was a generous and bountiful conversation and one that I will treasure. Ishita's website on Italian Culture and Travel http://Ishitasood.com shares the many layers of travel narratives, Italian Authors, books on Italy you should read and much more.Certainly life in the past few years has thrown us a huge curve ball and we are all trying to pick up the pieces. We may continue to examine and navigate the events of 2020 and beyond for some time. In the meantime we will dream, we will share and we will remember the highlights and the beauty of what keeps us motivated and inspired. We are committed and we are waiting, but in the short term enjoy this conversation from two Italophiles who could think of nothing better to do than take a deep dive into the beauty of Italy, travel and everything in between.Enjoy,Michelle & IshitaVisit: Ishita on Instagram @italophilia and https://ishitasood.com© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, books, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Please find all Show Notes and details mentioned at: michellejohnston.lifeInstagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__Support the show (http://michellejohnston.life)

"After all it is the adventure that counts" - Gertrude Stein, The Autobiography of Alice B. ToklasWelcome to Episode #29 Genova, LiguriaThe family trip continues after a too short stop over in Genova, we get ourselves ready to part with Italy and move onto France. In the meantime a wonderful morning is had walking the old town of Genoa in the Piazza La Maddelena and Piazza San Luca, checking out the local markets and enjoying the pleasures of a morning stroll into Piazza Bianchi not too far from Antico Porto where we wander until it is time to pack up and head to Genova Principe Station an architectural marvel in itself. We barely get our toes wet in the realm of possibilities that is Genoa and I really wish we could stay longer, but the realities of family life have us on the move. There is much to discover in this port city that is the Ligurian capital. Go visit www.visitgenoa.it for the overview. As a maritime republic Genova maintained control from around the 11th century to later in the 18th. La Superba indeed, the gritty beauty of this large city runs parallel to Unesco World Heritage sites, old world palazzos and the fabulous array of art that hides behind beckoning world class architecture and the historic detail of a rivaling maritime city that makes for a fascinating and deeply layered place. “There is already a tantalising sense of escape - of slipping beneath the radar of modern life" - Tom Chesshyre 'Slow Train to Venice'Welcome to Episode #28 Genova, LiguriaOne of things I adore about this whole Italian adventure is just how many doors Italy has to offer. Open one or two in you are in for a treat. Books, art, food and everything else. Travel takes on some kind of luminous quality once you get there, or are there...(Yes, I am waiting for the next door to open....that indeed is a different kind of story!)Firstly, I apologise for the echo chamber on the mic, perhaps next time I will not use the air pods for recording. However I love this share, I think there is something special about the many layers you experience on reflection and in the moment of travel. And secondly, it is a deep offering no less and I hope you enjoy it.....On Genova......A port city will always be an interesting multi sensory experience, a place where the mix of culture, ethnicity and class will not only dominate but inform the place. The commercial enterprises of the city are paramount to not only survival but the cultural diversity… in other words everyone has tried and tested these waters. Genova is the trade link for the Mediterranean Sea, in years past it has been called by many names….”la Superba" ...the proud one, "la Dominante"... the dominant one and/or, "la Repubblica dei magnifici", the Republic of the Magnificents..... the list goes on.....As a maritime republic Genova maintained control from around the 11th century to later in the 18th. "Enchantment - a useless thing, but as dispensable as bread" - Gio PontiWelcome to Episode #27 Pisa, Tuscany....I have always been a little intrigued about Pisa. Wondering to myself what it was all about, so much so I thought we better go. And it is a curious place, a Tuscan city not far from the sea, a maritime power in its hey day. The city was built on the legacy of trade and its location on the Fiume Arno (River Arno) the one that connects it to its Tuscan neighbour Florence. It was a little fun going down the rabbit hole and discovering this place. The Leaning Tower - Torre Pendente is obviously what sets this city apart, what magnetises the curious traveler. The thing I love about travel is when something happens that throws you off your tracks, our day in Pisa was full of lovely surprises. The beauty of the Piazza dei Miracoli - the square of Miracles is something I will not forget. A wandering city, the river Arno is wide, the beautiful gothic cathedral stands by the river ....the Santa Maria della Spina is a marvel as you meander along the beautiful bridges connecting the two sides of Pisa. The idea of travel now has a luminous quality, after a year of knowing we cannot go, our rosy glasses have had to come off. We have to appreciate what is within our own personal radius. I don't mind this, and shall reap the benefits of my own beautiful country, yet Italy still lures me, calls me. It is only through books and art right now that I can fly away, escape the day to day. If you have any great books or film or ideas in general on Italy send me a little note on the email. I would love to hear from you....Send to 23colours@gmail.comMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, Copyright 2021.Please find all Show Notes and details mentioned at: www.michellejohnston.lifeInstagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__About A Writer in Italy Podcast:Five years ago Michelle Johnston traveled to Italy to create space for herself and her writing. “The rain was coming down in what seemed solid sheets. But it was Italy. Nothing it did could be bad” - Elizabeth Von Armin ‘Enchanted April'Welcome to Episode #26Join me for a little Italian Joy and the delights of an afternoon wandering the Tuscan town of Lucca. The beauty of travel to me is leaving one molto bella historic city for another. An hour and a half on the train and then presto, we arrive at a medieval castle just outside the looming city wall that circumnavigates the centro storico. A little wet because it was raining but we are seduced by the beauty of early in Spring in Italy. "Thy light alone - Gives grace and truth to life's unquiet dream' - Percy Bysshe ShelleyWelcome to Episode #25.......Sometimes you just need to start in the middle, and somehow you find the beginning and the end. That is how this episode came about. There is always the attention to the inner calling to do the work, to make way, to make hay while the sun shines. This episode is a soliloquy to the creative life, to getting back to writing and to some musing about life and art. 'Eat, Pray, Love' and the book ‘Big Magic' by Elizabeth Gilbert played a role in reminding me why it all matters. And that sometimes you have to go out on a limb if you want to get the fruit. “I just think food is so important to us, it is the most important thing we do, so why not enjoy it”...Rick SteinWelcome to Episode 21:This is just me, the real me, the girl that decides to make it happen regardless of the original plan.A garden walk and a podcast recorded in the chicken pen. A little cook up of the stinging nettle I foraged in the garden was the outcome of this spontaneous episode on the philosophy and heritage of La Cucina Povera. It goes without saying that 2020 has been an interesting social experiment and I have been contemplating many things that relate to less waste and more good living on my own terms. After listening to the book on Patience Gray about her evocative life by Adam Federman this week, she died early 2005 and published many books and essays on food and life in particular the classic 'Honey From a Weed' on her journey of living in the wilds of the Mediterranean lands and sea. I have been musing over many things related this past few months that I ponder in this episode. This is an offering of sorts, a whimsical share and a possible rant on what it means to be a modern woman and what it means to juggle the anxieties of the modern trappings this world offers. Certainly I am a privileged woman who can make her own decisions about the give and the take on an ordinary Wednesday. If you want the real truth it is most of all the ordinary kind of magic that interests me the most. The kind of alchemy that happens in the kitchen and in the garden, and when you spontaneously decide to make a plate of pasta for lunch from something on hand and within reach. An improvisation of sorts. This is my favourite kind of day, a privilege yes, and a humble thrill to even ramble and share this musing on a detail of Italian culture and how I feel inspired by it daily.mj xoEnjoy, See You Next time with Florence and Lucca, Italy.........© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, writing, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Please find all Show Notes and details mentioned at: www.michellejohnston.lifeInstagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__About A Writer in Italy Podcast:Five years ago Michelle Johnston traveled to Italy to create space for herself and her writing. Welcome to Episode #17: Bringing Italy Home.. This is a second dose of possibilities of an Italian kind. Over the past few weeks I have been wandering into old books and new ones, and have felt delighted at sitting down to watch the documentaries Made in Italy, Franca: Chaos and Creation and my favourite Italian film I practically had to go on a pilgrimage to get my hands on. It turns out that E-bay came up with the goods in the end....I was so happy because for ages I have wanted to watch Bread and Tulips, the Italian film that one many Italian Academy Awards back in early 2000. I just love the characters and certainly the back drop of Venice is wonderful...Since we are in the middle of a large adjustment around travel it is great that we can tap into film and books like Always Italy to feed the muse in the meantime. Welcome to Episode #15: The Calabrian Homecoming - In Conversation with Josephine Gregoire.....I have sat on this conversation for a while now and let's just say it has to be noted that we sat down on a beautiful summers day here in Bungendore, NSW, Australia at Le Tres Bon in Josephine and Christophe's French Restaurant in late 2019 to record this podcast. It is important to note that at the time, all was pretty normal here in Australia. China was certainly not in a great place with Covid-19, yet Italy nor Spain had no idea what was hurtling toward them. Italy's first case of Covid-19 hit the headlines at the end of January 2020. Then the spiral of life changes began to trickle and then absolutely pour into northern Italy at a disarming rate. Still right now all of Italy is in lockdown as are most places around the world. I am sharing this despite our worlds turning upside down and despite the fact that since last week Le Tres Bon has had to shut their doors to the public as have many restaurants around the world. Their Cooking School and their Tours of Alsace, France, Calabria, Italy and New Caledonia are on hold for now until that beautiful day arrives when this is over, a surreal thought right now.I am sharing this because conversations and time with people matters, the beauty of sharing a coffee has never been more of a sweet thing until now, simply because unless it's with a member of your own personal household well it is not happening. When we sat down to chat last year it was because I knew Josephine's story was an important one and one that I wanted to know more about and potentially share on the podcast. This is indeed a story about Love, Migration, Tradition and Place. Firstly, I just want to thank Josephine for opening her heart to tell her story to us. I doubt it was easy as it is deeply personal and relevant to her life today. Welcome to Episode #14: Food For Thought, Cooking from the Cookbook ‘Bread is Gold: Extraordinary Meals with Ordinary Ingredients' as a project to see me though this year. I have no doubt it will take me that long......And surrendering to the Simple Life as I know it.Wow, things have changed so fast we barely know what will happen today nor tomorrow. We are in the middle of unprecedented times, certainly in my own personal lifetime never mind my kids. Italy is suffering so much as are most countries, and we are watching from the sidelines on guard to our own fate with this virus. My prayers and thoughts are with those who are experiencing the harsh reality and pain of this time. In the short term I am concentrating my energies on what I can do today that is creative, intentional and purposeful. Creativity is called for in times of crisis. Making the decision to flat out cook from the bountiful ‘Bread is Gold' cookbook is not a light one. It takes time, thought, intention, resourcefulness and conviction. Time will tell about the conviction part however I am enjoying the process and finding my way even if I am slightly anxious how this will turn out. Onwards I say.......Thank you for joining me on the Podcast and on Instagram.......© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, writing, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Bread is Gold: Extraordinary Meals with Ordinary Ingredients by Massimo Bottura & Friends by Phaidon PressNetflix: Theater of Life Documentary, 2015:Documents Bottura opening the soup Kitchen for the needy using the food waste from the 2015 Milan Expo..........Netflix: Chef's Table......Season 1:If you don't already know Massimo Bottura this is the story behind his rise to No 1 Restaurant in the world.Fantastic and an incredible journey to be one of the most influential people in the world. Welcome to Episode #12: We kick off Season 2 with a wonderful conversation with the delightful Ashley Bartner of La Tavola Marche, a Cooking School, Farm and Agriturismo in Italy.Ashley and her husband Jason moved to Italy thirteen years ago from New York with a plan to create their own business off the beaten track in the region of Le Marche. With a big dream in their back pocket and hearts full of enthusiasm they both ventured into the world of farm life, cooking schools and the Italian Lifestyle. It wasn't without its trials and tribulations (whatever good thing ever is?) and that is a testament to their ability to keep moving forward no matter what the universe threw their way. I loved this conversation for a bunch of reasons. Not only is Ashley full of heart and zest for life but she is a generous person who not only loves what she does but shares it in spades in this conversation and in life. Ashley and Jason have pooled their talents to create a successful business and a hands on experience for the travelers who come from around the world to participate in their workshops and the region of the Le Marche.... the place they call home.Visit: www.latavolamarche.com for more information. Welcome to Episode #11 and the Eternal City of Roma. This is the final chapter of the book share In the Shadow of a Cypress: An Italian Adventure and Season 1 on the podcast A Writer In Italy. What a journey it has been. These last days wandering around Rome from Piazza to Piazza sipping cappuccino and people watching in Piazza della Rotunda were full of delight and spontaneity. The travelers dream day. No real destination, just the beauty of turning into a hidden street and discovering the best gelato one has ever tried or a stationary shop to tempt the purchase of just one more journal to write in. The day has me wandering across Ponte Sisto to Trastevere in a reverie about life and how it is important to seek and create space for yourself. I cannot help but reflect on the weeks that have captured something beautiful in Italy.Stay tuned to the absolute end of this share for details on Season 2 and the next episode to share in 2020, and books and my discoveries of a few Roman treasures of the 21st Century kind. I do rattle on a little until I decide to just do it and share my inspirations before running off to the school gate.....© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, writing, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Please find Show Notes at: www.michellejohnston.lifePlease subscribe, rate and/or review if you enjoyed this podcast.Instagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__About A Writer in Italy Podcast:Five years ago Michelle Johnston traveled to Italy to create space for herself and her writing. Welcome to Episode #10 Amalfi, Campania and the joys and discoveries up in the terraced hillside of Pogerola, Italy.Certainly this recent podcast had me juggling the creative life and the realities of living in Australia at the end of 2019. However, I was more than happy to share the days in Amalfi and pages from my book ‘In the Shadow of a Cypress' in podcast land.....Amalfi was a collection of rich moments. The architecture, the history, the location, the sea and the shades of colourful umbrellas on the beach at Positano certainly captured my spirit. Moments only a traveler who is open to a little coastal magic can have. Welcome to Episode #8 Siena, Tuscany Book Share: In the Shadow of a Cypress: An Italian Adventure. Chapter 6 and the Italian Adventure continues.....After wonderful days exploring Florence and Fiesole to a sweet journey through the Tuscan Countryside to Siena by rail.Returning to Siena after many years it was wonderful to be sitting and sipping a cappuccino staring at the beauty of the Palazzo Pubblico on my first morning in the Centro Storico of this Unesco World Heritage medieval city. Siena is an obvious choice if visiting Florence. An hour and a half away on the train or by car through majestic countryside and you find yourself in a city like no other. Once upon a time it was a stop on the pilgrimage route as the pilgrims came from the south to Rome along the Via Francigena. With its fan shaped piazza, Gothic Duomo, wonderfully dark secretive streets, the non stop celebrations of the Palio Race and the many Renaissance treasures there is much to discover and enjoy inside and outside of the medieval walls. Please find Show Notes at: www.michellejohnston.life© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, writing, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Instagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__Next stop the Amalfi Coast for Episode 9.....days spent exploring the villages of Amalfi with trips to Ravello, Positano and more.....About A Writer in Italy Podcast:Five years ago Michelle Johnston traveled to Italy to create space for herself and her writing. Welcome to Episode #7: A Conversation with Cookbook Author, Food Writer and Photographer Emiko Davies about Italy, Books and Family.......I had a lovely time over coffee at Tilley's Lyneham on a chilly winters morning in Canberra chatting and getting to know Emiko and all of the wonderful details about her three cookbooks and how she started as a Food Blogger in Florence, Italy.I very much enjoyed this conversation forgetting that I am on the recording too, hence all of my oohs and ahhs while listening in rapture to the wonderful details of Emiko's life. Polling done by Research Co. finds that Kennedy Stewart is winning in the race to be Vancouver's next mayor. In second place is the NPA's Ken Sim and in third is independent candidate Shauna Sylvester. With Stewart and Sylvester both positioned centre-left, there is concern that progressive Vancouverites are feeling pressure to vote for Stewart, just to keep Ken Sim out of office. In this episode, UBC political science professor Richard Johnston discusses whether polling done in Vancouver's 2018 election is shaping our political landscape, or passively reflecting voter preference.
Today’s show starts out with an examination of the effects of polling on Vancouver’s 2018 Election with UBC political science professor Richard Johnston. We then have an interview with Tamara Levy of the UBC School of Law. She talks with the News Collective about the frequency of wrongful convictions in Canada in honour National Wrongful Conviction Day, which took place last week on October 2nd.Lastly, we have a report on the City’s new initiative to increase voter turnout through more accessible voting options. Reporters Samuel Jones and Linden Wong bring us a report from a couple mobile voting sites that opened this week and we hear how helpful they are to folks with limited mobility or who face mental health or drug addiction related barriers.
The referendum that takes place this Fall could change the entire political landscape in the lower mainland. But, it also may not change anything. Richard Johnston with the Department of Political Science at UBC shares his thoughts on the matter.

It is the eve of St. Patrick’s Day and it does seem that even if you’re not Irish per se, St. Patrick’s Day brings out a little bit of Irish in us all. And while I have no interest in green beer, I do have an interest in the green of the garden. To celebrate this – today we’re pleased to be joined by Fionnuala Fallon, a horticulturist, garden writer, garden designer and organic flower farmer, and gardening correspondent for 'The Irish Times' since 2011. Her first book, photographed by her husband Richard Johnston, "From the Ground Up: How Ireland is Growing Its Own" was published by Collins Press in 2012.
Sponsored by GreenSax.ie - compostable bags for home & garden. Peter talks with horticulturist, writer and garden designer Fionnuala Fallon. Fionnuala writes weekly for The #Irish Times and is a longstanding contributor to The Irish #Garden magazine. Now comes the release of her first book From The Ground Up, a collaboration with her husband and absolute genius photographer Richard Johnston.
