Welcome to episode ninety-six of New Creation Conversations. I'm joined this week by writer, professor, and expert on theology and literature, Dr. Karen Swallow Prior. Karen did her PhD at the State University of New York at Buffalo with a specialization in eighteenth century British literature. Karen taught in seminaries for a number of years, and she is a contributing editor for Comment, a founding member of The Pelican Project, a Senior Fellow at Trinity Forum, a Senior Fellow at the International Alliance for Christian Education, a Senior Fellow at the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture and is a former member of the Faith Advisory Council of the Humane Society of the United States. She and her husband live on a 100-year-old homestead in central Virginia with dogs, chickens, and lots of books.Karen has written and contributed to several books. We discuss her most recent work, The Evangelical Imagination: How Stories, Images, and Metaphors Created a Culture in Crisis (Brazos Press). In the book she examines evangelical history – both good and bad. By analyzing the literature, art, and popular cultural that has surrounded evangelicalism, she unpacks some of the movement's most deeply held concepts, ideas, values, and practices to consider what is Christian rather than merely cultural. The result is a clearer path forward for evangelicals amid their current identity crisis – and insight for others who want a deeper understanding of what was best about the evangelical movement, and what possibilities might still be in its future. As many of you know, I am a fan of theology and literature, and I love the way Karen blends those too with important cultural and philosophical analysis. It is a very thoughtful and helpful book. And a very fun conversation.

Today’s conversation is with a true “kingdom advancer,” a man who is fully devoted to what God has called him to in this life. Rev. George Lamb is Founder and Executive Director of Millennium Man Ministries and President/CEO of the Faith Advisory Council for Community Transformation; along with those positions, he has his hands in the work of numerous other ministries to further the kingdom of God. From inner city NY, growing up with poor role models and a cultural mindset that didn’t honor the correct values, George has been elevated to many places of service as God has paved the way for him. He says it comes down to obedience and availability because these are the qualities that God looks for in people He wants to use. George shares the way the Holy Spirit orchestrated and commandeered his life, back when he was a construction worker who lived a party lifestyle---it was one fateful night at church with his mother when George’s life was changed. God has put him in places the world would say he’s not qualified for, but he is helping effect cultural change on a governmental level and helping the church fit into the “cultural clash” occurring in America today. Join us to hear more from George and how he commits daily to “letting my hands be used by the King.” Resources: www.faithacct.org www.aeccministries.com Understanding the Purpose and Power of Men by Myles Munroe

We all know a little something about President Donald Trump, how he bankrolled his family fortune into celebrity. But what do we know about his religious history? Our guest for this episode is author, speaker, podcaster Stephen Mansfield. Stephen is the New York Times bestselling author of Choosing Donald Trump. The charismatic preacher and author of The Power of Positive Thinking, Norman Vincent Peele, preached before the Trump family when Donald was just a boy. Principles of that ministry can still be seen in the president today: thinking of oneself as blessed, denying negativity, seeing oneself as deserving of God's blessing. The president was also heavily influenced by Paula White, a pentecostal preacher and a member of his Faith Advisory Council. Though Donald Trump may offend many Christians, he lays claim to our faith. What do we do with that information? As a note, this episode was recorded before the passing of Billy Graham so there is one reference to him as if he is still alive. Last Saturday, a four-year-old boy climbed the wall of the Cincinnati Zoo’s gorilla exhibit and tumbled into the moat. After Harambe, the zoo’s 17-year-old gorilla, dragged the boy through the water multiple times, a zookeeper shot and killed the animal. Over the weekend, the story provoked national speculation, fury, and sadness over parenting, zoos, and dead animals. While zoo officials were right to kill Harambe to protect the toddler, the Bible is clear that animals have value, says Karen Swallow Prior, an English professor at Liberty University, and a member of the Faith Advisory Council of the Humane Society of the United States. “Let’s go back to Genesis and the Bible. Very clearly there is something that we as human beings share with animals, in terms of having animation, having a moving spirit,” said Prior. “We are made in God’s image, animals are not, but we still have the breath of life in us. God himself indicates in the Genesis account that there is a special relationship between humans and animals because God gives Adam the job of naming animals.” Prior joined Morgan and Katelyn on Quick to Listen this week to talk about the history of zoos, if we should apply human emotions to animals, and whether animals go to heaven. (6:50) What are the objects of the public’s love in this story? (14:50) For many, this story pits animals against humans. Is that a false choice? Why do we prioritize the child’s life over the gorilla’s? (21:20) What do zoos assume about the way the world should be?
Racist Suspect Dr. Karen Swallow Prior visits The Context of White Supremacy. Dr. Prior earned her Ph. D. and M. A. at the State University of New York at Buffalo and her B. A. at Daemen College. She's a professor of English at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and a member of Faith Advisory Council of the Humane Society of the United States. Gus reiterated his interest in hearing how White professors teach on Dr. Maya Angelou's iconic autobiographical novel, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. A listener alerted Gus of Dr. Prior's essay on this book - What Maya Angelou Means When She Says 'Shakespeare Must Be a Black Girl'. We originally agreed to do this program a week earlier, but the death of Michael Brown, Jr. and the events in Ferguson altered time. As it turns out, Dr. Prior has recommended people read Caged Bird to get a better grasp of what's happening in Missouri. We're interested to hear what she thinks this book can teach us about Racism (White Supremacy) and why it is so popular amongst Whites. #TheCOWS5Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
