Dear Grand Lake UMC,One of my favorite hymns has always been, Here I Am, Lord. Here is the refrain:Here I am, LordIs it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the nightI will go, Lord, If You lead meI will hold Your people in my heartFour years ago, when I heard God calling me out of my career as a teacher, I told Him I would go where He led me. I'm so thankful He led me to Grand Lake. You are the church that taught me how to do full time ministry and you helped me to develop a stronger faith. You are the people who endured my very first sermon and lifted me up in times of grief. You are the place where I received my call into ordained ministry and where I learned new ways to love and serve. Grand Lake was my classroom, long before I began seminary.I care deeply for you all, but especially the youth of Grand Lake and Celina. I am grateful that you entrusted me with them, because they have taught me so much and have filled me with an indescribable joy. Grand Lake is blessed to have such faithful and spirit filled teens and young adults. I am particularly thankful for the small groups I have been blessed to be a part of, the trips I have been able to participate in, and the people who selflessly support the youth of Grand Lake.Just as the refrain repeats itself in the song, the Lord called to me again. You have been instrumental in my ministry journey. I will forever be grateful for the many ways you have equipped, supported, and encouraged me. You have asked about my seminary classes, prayed for me, and voted to affirm my call, allowing me to become a Certified Candidate for Ministry in hopes of becoming an Ordained Elder in the UMC, someday. However, this provided an opportunity for me to be appointed to a church, so that I may continue to grow and learn through practice. The Bishop has appointed me to serve as the pastor at Amlin UMC in the Columbus area, beginning July 1. So, once again, I am going where God is leading. I am excited that I get to share with a new congregation all that you, at Grand Lake, have taught me. As the song says, I will hold you in my heart, as I have for many years now, just from a bit farther away.Thank you and blessings to you,Liz Trigg

Since an early age, the Rev. Lataya Simpson defined ministry as serving God by serving others. For nearly 30 years she has been blessed with the various opportunities to live out this paradigm in diverse settings. From the age of 15, Lataya began leading a small group in her High School teaching Bible Study every week for 3 years. During college, she was hungry for ways to get involved in ministry and combined her passion for ministry and academic studies in broadcast journalism to volunteer in ministry media at her church. After graduating with a BA in Broadcast Journalism and a short lived career in journalism, Lataya decided she wanted to do something other than report bad news. She wanted to serve and lead in her community.  In 2006 she founded Christian Networking Group, a diverse organization which connected thousands of people to help in bridging the gap between faith and business. Lataya accepted her call to pastoral ministry in 2011. She was blessed to find a mentor in her own home, following in her husband's footsteps to become an Ordained Elder in Full Connection in The United Methodist Church. She and he attended SMU Perkins School of Theology, earning the Master of Divinity degrees consecutively; he in 2017, she in 2018. Her first appointment as a pastor came in 2016 while still in seminary. From there she spent a year as a hospital Chaplain and for the past 3 years has been serving as the Associate Pastor of Bellaire UMC, located in the city of Bellaire.  In addition to being a servant leader, Lataya is a first a wife, mother and friend. “Faith and family are my top two priorities, but I'm blessed that my calling enables me to enrich both of these.” She and her husband Rev. Johnnie, are parents of three amazing children: Johnnie III, Elle and Layla. Her husband lives out his calling as both pastor and community leader. Lataya has a passion for personal development and social/emotional wellness as well as racial, cultural and cognitive diversity. Her first book, More Than Pretty: 7 Beauty Secrets That Could Change Your Life, which focused on personal development, was self-published in 2014. She has written several children's books on these topics and hopes to publish many more in the future.

Notable Quotes and Thoughts: Simon turns into Peter. Simon a new name—The Rock. (Not to be confused with Dwayne Johnson.) That's what the name Peter means. And it's not like there were lots of people walking around with this name. There is no record prior to this moment of anyone in Aramaic or Greek culture being named “Rock.” The only one named Rock is GodThe Messiah is thought of as a political ruler to lead the chosen people into societal ruling. We start on the previous Sunday as we celebrate Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.Palm Sunday | We remember Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover with his family and disciples.Maundy Thursday | Maundy Thursday is an alternate name for Holy Thursday, the first of the three days of solemn remembrance of the events leading up to and immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus. The English word "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, which means "commandment." As recorded in John's gospel, on his last night before his betrayal and arrest, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then gave them a new commandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34). Good Friday | Good Friday is a day that proclaims God's purpose of loving and redeeming the world through the cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is a day that is good because God was drawing the world to God's self in Christ. As seen in John's gospel, particularly, God was in control. God was not making the best of a bad situation, but was working out God's intention for the world — winning salvation for all people. We call it "good" because we look backward at the crucifixion through the lens of Easter!Easter | Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus from the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion. Remembering the resurrection of Jesus is a way to renew daily hope that we have victory over sin. Greek Notes | Get thee behind me, Satan, Jesus says. And we feel the sharp sting of the rebuke. But there is a small note of grace. In the temptation narrative, after Jesus had endured all the attacks of the devil, there he spoke a single word: “Hupage Satana!” (Begone! Flee from my presence!) Here the phrase is slightly different: “Hupage opiso mou Satana!” (Not “begone,” but “get behind me.”) Origen (church father from the 3rd century) suggests that Jesus is saying: “Peter, your place is behind me, not in front of me. It is your place to follow in the way I choose, not to try to lead me in the way you would like me to go.” Get behind me, and become my follower again. “For if anyone wishes to come after me,” Jesus continues, “let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

It may seem like a small act of charity to give a prisoner's child a gift at Christmas, but it is not! Such seemingly small acts of kindness are often a powerful channel of God's love. This team is always looking for helpers in delivery of the gifts. Angel Tree is a ministry of Prison Fellowship. Timothy Tennent | “This is why we care about creation; this is why we cannot turn a deaf ear to the bodily plight of desperate Syrian refugees. This is why we must rescue women trapped in human trafficking, feed those who are hungry, and a thousand other things. These are not ancillary tasks of the church which we squeeze in on the side, but they are our fleshly demonstration of our confidence in the bodily incarnation and the bodily resurrection. The gospel must never lose its earthiness, its enfleshment, its embodiment. It is played with a deck of 24, 28, or 32 standard playing cards. Normally there are four players, two on each team, although there are variations that range from two to nine players. Euchre was responsible for introducing the joker into the modern deck of cards. The Joker Deck was introduced to Americanized Euchre around 1860 with the joker acting as a top trump or best Bower (from the German word Bauer, "farmer", denoting also the Jack – see Bester Bube).[1] Euchre is believed to be closely related to the French game Écarté,[2] the seventeenth-century game Loo, and the 19th-century game Juckerspiel. It may be sometimes referred to as Knock Euchre to distinguish it from Bid Euchre. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euchre Finding purpose in Fondwa: Zionsville couple shares purpose of long-term mission to build housing in Haiti • Current Publishing - https://bit.ly/2RpIQAO

By “practices” I mean things we do again and again and again (often in worship). They are ordained (commanded) by Christ: When Jesus first shares communion with is disciples, he tells us to “do this in remembrance of me.” His final command to the disciples was to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Sacraments are rooted in story--they call to mind the story of Christ, what he did on our behalf and how he showed us to live. And they point toward the ongoing presence and grace of God within our lives.Communion - Holy Communion includes a profound act of remembrance that recalls the last supper Jesus had with his disciples. But it is more than just a ritual of remembering. It is primarily an act through which our connection with God, each other and our life of ministry in the world is nourished and strengthened. https://www.umc.org/en/content/ask-the-umc-is-communion-simply-a-ritual-of-remembrance Dr. David Steinmetz - Steinmetz retired from Duke Divinity School in 2009 after teaching for more than 35 years. Oxford University Press released his book Calvin in Context in a revised and expanded edition in 2010, and in 2011 he published a collection of theological essays titled Taking the Long View, also from Oxford. In 2006 Steinmetz was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was a United Methodist minister and a former president of the American Society of Church History. https://divinity.duke.edu/node/8187 Road to Emmaus Appearance - According to the New Testament, the road to Emmaus appearance is one of the early resurrection appearances of Jesus after his crucifixion and the discovery of the empty tomb.[1][2][3] Both the meeting on the road to Emmaus and the subsequent supper at Emmaus, depicting the meal that Jesus had with two disciples after the encounter on the road, have been popular subjects in art. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_to_Emmaus_appearance Mother Teresa - Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje*, Macedonia, on August 26**, 1910. Her family was of Albanian descent. At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. She knew she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ. At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. After a few months' training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1979/teresa/biographical/ There are four verbs that each pastor uses when we bless the bread or the cup. These are the four movements of the communion liturgy. Christ takes. Christ blesses. Christ breaks (or sheds). Christ gives. So we remember that the life of Christ was taken and blessed, broken and distributed, for the salvation of us all. But here's the kicker: when we come to the altar, to receive this meal, we bring ourselves, and ask God to do with us what God will. To make something of our lives, broken and marred by sin though we may be. And so God takes, receiving and blessings us. But then, once Christ is in us, we are broken and given--sent forth to be living sacrifices of love and service and witness to God's great grace and mercy.

And they point toward the ongoing presence and grace of God within our lives.Baptism - There's arguments about how you should be baptized (sprinkling, pouring, or full immersion in water). We also disagree about how often you need to be baptized. Some churches teach you have to baptized anew with every profession of faith, or to be part of their specific congregation, while others (including Methodists) affirm only one baptism is sufficient for your lifetime. And probably the biggest debate centers around when you can receive that baptism--how old do you have to be? Is there an age of accountability for which we should wait, or can others (like your parents) make the decision to have you baptized?Missionary Baptist Church - Missionary Baptists are a group of Baptists that grew out of the missionary / anti-missionary controversy that divided Baptists in the United States in the early part of the 19th century, with Missionary Baptists following the pro-missions movement position. Those who opposed the innovations became known as anti-missions or Primitive Baptists. Since arising in the 19th century, the influence of Primitive Baptists waned as "Missionary Baptists became the mainstream". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missionary_Baptists What is a Deacon? - https://www.britannica.com/topic/deacon Baptismal Font - In the Christian world, a baptismal font is not a fancy script or style or writing. It's a piece of furniture. Specifically, the baptismal font is the receptacle in which water is held for the baptism, one of the most important rituals in Christian churches. https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-a-baptismal-font-definition-design.html Matt Bays (Finding God in the Ruins: How God Reddems Pain) - When the reality of your pain doesn't line up with what you've been taught in church, then what? While many abandon their faith or embrace hopelessness, it is possible to discover the God who heals your heart in the midst of the pain. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25779509-finding-god-in-the-ruins You can find Matt on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/mattbays70 and Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mattbayswriter United Methodist Church - The United Methodist Church was created in 1968, but Methodism dates back to John and Charles Wesley who sought to spread the Methodist movement they began as student small group at Oxford. At about the same time, people like Philip Otterbein and Martin Boehm were leading similar movements that helped people grow in their faith. Those two strands of Christianity came together decades later to form The United Methodist Church. https://www.umc.org Two Point Charge - In The United Methodist Church, some smaller congregations will share a pastor. If a pastor is in charge of leading two churches, this is often referred to as a “two point charge.”Confirmation - United Methodists use the term "confirmation" to mark the first time a baptized Christian publicly "confirms" their intention to live the vows of the baptismal and membership covenant and so becomes a professing member of the local congregation and The United Methodist Church.https://www.umc.org/en/content/ask-the-umc-what-do-i-need-to-know-about-confirmation-in-the-united-methodist-church Dr. Gregory Jones, Dean of Duke Divinity School - “The problem is not that we baptize children when they are too young to remember. The problem is that we don't raise them to understand what it means to be baptized.”
