Sisters Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile are carrying their mother's torch shining the light on the darkness after coming to terms with the fact that their great grandfather George Hodel was the prime suspect in the most notorious unsolved murder of the 20th century. Their mother Fauna Hodel always told them: "You are not this supposed evilness that we come from. You are pure love and light because you come from me." As the title explains, the podcast is about the murder of Elizabeth Short (aka "the Black Dahlia"), as well as the Hodel Family. In this season, we'll explore the man behind the mystery of who killed Elizabeth Short, George Hodel, and the generational wake of terror and destruction that he left, causing members of his own family to name the podcast the "Root of Evil" after him.In our second episode, Ashley and Megan from Give Us Morgue, dig further into Elizabeth Short's murderer, George Hodel. Hodel was a genius, with an IQ one point higher than Einstein- he was literally an evil genius. A highly regarded doctor who allegedly raped and murdered multiple women. SEPTEMBER TOPIC: The Cecil Hotel Check out Buzz Killers every Sunday for new episodes! In episode forty seven we discuss horrific the murder of Elizabeth Short. On January 15, 1947, a woman walking with her young daughter on a residential street in Los Angeles, discovered the body of a woman in the brush next to the sidewalk. After a series of mishaps that caused law enforcement to mishandle the scene, the woman was identified as Elizabeth Short, an aspiring actress who had been missing since January 9. The circumstances of the crime would lead to her being given the nickname "The Black Dahlia," and the case became one of the most famous unsolved crimes in LAPD history. Although the case remains unsolved to this day, a very credible theory has risen to the surface, but it is unclear whether the truth about Elizabeth's demise ever be recognized by the authorities. S4:E13 - Jess and Jared recap and discuss “BOOM." The S.H.I.E.L.D. crew splits up to find Radcliffe's secret origin/lost love Agnes Kitsworth (AIDA's spitting image/model), and deal with the Watchdog-turned-exploding-man/self-hating Inhuman, Shockley. Mack and Coulson meet Agnes and try to convince her to help S.H.I.E.L.D. take down Radcliffe and AIDA, while Ivanov's plan to prove Senator Nadeer was an Inhuman like her brother backfired, revealing his righthand man Shockley, unbeknownst to everyone, was in fact an Inhuman, and Nadeer was a human casualty of the ploy. Fitz figures out how Daisy's powers can stop the exploding man's explosions and the team saves the day, but Coulson and Mack weren't able to get Agnes on board with their plan before Radcliffe convinced her to come with him. We started this one off with a tangent about how being "sibling cowriters" in Hollywood might work, then included a little bit about Mallory Jansen's time in Galavant, and a lot about how great she is in this episode as both the synthetic, robotic AIDA, and the very human Agnes. And Shockley's shocking (sorry) revelation shakes his sense of identity, and led to a discussion of Patty Jenkins's I Am the Night mini-series with Chris Pine about the true story of Fauna Hodel. Jess asks "Who can tell what a robot is thinking?," and we ponder "are submarines meant to be really fast?," and "would *you* download yourself into a robot?" This week sees the 200th anniversary of the birth of Herman Melville, writer of one of America's greatest novels, Moby Dick. Sarah Churchwell and Richard King discuss the extraordinary tale of Captain Ahab's pursuit of the white sperm whale that had bitten off his leg. The story of Ahab's revenge is famously narrated by Ishmael, who is on his first whaling expedition, with one of literature's most celebrated opening lines : Call me Ishmael. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is reunited with Chris Pine in new TV drama I Am the Night. Set in 1950s America it follows the true story of Fauna Hodel, a young woman in search of her biological family after discovering she’s adopted and not mixed race as she’d been told, but white. Both Fauna, and a down-and-out reporter played by Pine, end up on the trail of famous gynaecologist, Dr. George Hodel who's somehow connected to the gruesome Black Dahlia murder. Is there something to be said for Luddism? The machine-wrecking rebels of the Industrial Revolution are the subject of a new play There is a Light that Never Goes Out: Scenes from the Luddite Rebellion at the Manchester Royal Exchange. Rather than casting The Luddites as history's losers, fighting a doomed battle against the march of progress, it asks whether they were in fact pioneers who paved the way for workers' rights and the welfare state. This week's episode seems to be filled with bleaker content... it wasn't planned that way, but hang in there. First Dhani discusses the rom-com Nobody's Fool. She talks about how Tyler Perry always creates male characters that say the right thing and work for the women who watch. :) Next, Dhani talks about a documentary on Netflix called Abducted in Plain Sight. This is tough subject matter, but it is quite a story that is a cautionary tale to all families. Moving on to TV, Dhani first talks about the new show I Am The Night based on the true story of Fauna Hodel's autobiography. It looks to be an interesting series directed by Patty Jenkins. The next show Dhani talks about is the live airing of RENT. Or the almost live production. Because this is her favorite musical, she was underwhelmed. The next show we discuss is the ending of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Dhani really enjoyed the way it ended and feels it is one of the funniest shows ever. Finally, Dhani watched a brand new show on Netflix called Russian Doll. She appreciates the female team of creators, writers, and directors because she believes that made the lead character, Nadia, feel more real with her trauma and the insane situation she finds herself in. For the Actors' Corner this week, we chose Whoopi Goldberg. We discuss the movies of hers that we love, like, didn't like, secretly love and haven't seen. Nobody's Fool (1:22) ★★★★ Abducted in Plain Sight (5:31) ★★★★ I Am The Night (17:30) RENT Live (23:30) Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (30:25) Russian Doll (35:43) Actors' Corner: Whoopi Goldberg (42:46)
We talk about amazing new British-Australian mystery series The Cry, Natasha Lyonne in Netflix's new Groundhog Day-style series Russian Doll, and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins' mini-series, I Am The Night - which touches on the Black Dahlia murder mystery. Clare's back, as she interviews Celia Pacquola and Luke McGregor about Rosehaven . This week's hidden gem is Broad City. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Inspired by true events and directed by Patty Jenkins ("Wonder Woman"), "I Am the Night" tells the gripping story of Fauna Hodel, a teenage girl who is given away at birth. Fauna lives more-or-less comfortably with the mysteries of her origin, until one day she makes a discovery that leads her to question everything. As Fauna begins to investigate the secrets of her past, she meets a ruined reporter, haunted by the case that undid him. Together they follow a sinister trail that swirls ever closer to an infamous Los Angeles gynecologist, Dr. George Hodel, a man involved in some of Hollywood’s darkest debauchery, and possibly, its most infamous unsolved crime. Jenkins, Chris Pine, India Eisley, Jefferson Mays, Golden Brooks and Connie Nielsen took the BUILD stage to discuss the TNT limited series.
