Outlouders, we have quite the little treat for your Sunday Special today. It’s been 18 months since Evelyn Jones burst onto our screens in Strife—fictional, yes, but her story couldn’t feel more real to the women who brought her to life. In this special episode of No Filter, host Jessie Stephens— one of Strife's writers and an Executive Editor on Mamamia—is joined by Mia Freedman, Asher Keddie (who plays Evelyn) and Bruna Papandrea (Executive Producer) to reflect on Season 1 and to give us a sneak peek at what’s to come in Season 2. Mia's memoir Work, Strife, Balance inspired the hit Binge series and together, these powerhouse creatives, open up about what it means to be a woman in the media and entertainment industry today—the competition, the comparisons, the fear of cancellation, and the constant balancing act between public and private life. And of course, they talk about ambition: what it costs, why it matters, and how the world still struggles when women dare to want more. Season 2 of Strife is streaming on Binge now. Today, we're joined by 5 x logie winner and one of Australia's most beloved actresses, Asher Keddie. Asher is usually more reserved when it comes to her private life but it was really refreshing to hear her say that she is feeling more and more comfortable actually speaking about herself and what her motivations and ambitions are, rather than just about the characters she plays. Asher has a reputation of playing complex and layered, strong female characters in shows like ‘Offspring’, ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ and she’s now back as Evelyn Jones in Season 2 of ‘Strife’, a series inspired by Mia Freedman's memoir Work, Strife, Balance. The show delves into the life of a modern woman juggling the demands of career, motherhood, and personal identity in the digital age. We’ve had quite a lot of conversations on the podcast about the expectations of us to ‘do it all’ and make it look easy and we wanted to speak with Asher today about motherhood and the complexities of juggling her career alongside family life. We spoke about: The ‘actual’ story of how Asher got into acting (and it’s not the narrative that’s circulated) Why Asher chose to stay acting in Australia rather than going to Hollywood or NY The ‘care less’ factor you gain as you get a bit older and feel more confident What drew Asher to Strife Dealing with rejection Whether the ‘expiration date’ of women is shifting Mum guilt and making work decisions with family in mind The evolution in her relationship in the last 14 years Season two of STRIFE is out now on Binge and it’s brilliant! When artist Vincent Fantauzzo was a boy he was a street-fighting petty criminal with dyslexia and a blazing talent for drawing. He escaped jail time, and grew up to become one of Australia's most well-known portrait artists.VIncent Fantauzzo is one of Australia's most successful portrait artists. For his luminous, photo-realistic paintings he's won the People's Choice Award at the annual Archibald Prize more than any other artist. He's also won the Moran National Portrait Prize twice, once with a painting of his friend, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and the second time with a painting of his wife, actor Asher Keddie. All the success is a long way from his upbringing in Broadmeadows in Melbourne, when at times it seemed like he was going to end up in jail, or dead.Vincent struggled so badly with dyslexia that he developed elaborate rituals to avoid writing at school, which is partly how he came to drawing. He became a street-fighting petty criminal and he was kicked out of school at 14 and was drawn into a violent world where he had to be extraordinarily streetwise to survive.Vincent still carries the scars of surviving his childhood into the big, beautiful life he's built for himself as one of Australia's most well-known artists. This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, social disadvantage, parenting, father son relationships, boxing, learning disabilities, struggling in school, Hollywood, the art world, Heath Ledger, Kim Ledger, Batman, family, family dynamics, life story, art, portraits, painting, juvenile crime, drug dealing, hot houses, brothers.Unveiled, written with Craig Henderson, is published by Penguin.

While Something To Talk About takes a break, we are revisiting some of the most candid and revealing moments from the almost 50 guests who have joined us in conversation on this podcast over the past year.  If ever anyone needed proof that women are increasingly refusing to disappear from public life once they reach an age that would once have seen them supposedly past their “expiry date”, then they would find it in this sixth episode of the Something To Talk About summer series, And it's not just career success that so many Australian women are finding in their late forties, fifties, sixties and seventies - they are also discovering that with age comes, yes, wisdom, but also happiness, self-confidence and a sense of calm. Today's episode features four such women at the top of their game both professionally and personally, including Nicole Kidman, who says that at 56, she is revelling in making what she calls “teenage choices” when it comes to everything from the roles she chooses to the clothes that she wears.  Rebecca Gibney - who turns 60 at the end of this year but often still thinks she's 35 years old, declares that she is still acting by the age of 90, she plans to be less Driving Miss Daisy and more Betty White. Ahead of turning 50 later this year, Asher Keddie reflects on the hard won joys of working and living in a time when women's voices, and stories, are being listened to and celebrated more than ever -  while Liz Hayes, another fixture of Australian TV, reveals how she stared down sexism throughout her career to remain on screen much longer than she would have ever thought possible when starting out as a young reporter.  Hear the full conversation with each of the four guests featured in this episode here: Listen to Nicole Kidman here.  Listen to Liz Hayes here.  Listen to Asher Keddie here.  Listen to Rebecca Gibney here. For the past two decades, Asher Keddie has been a reliable presence in living rooms across the country - and one of the most popular actors of her generation. But despite her success - or, perhaps, because of it - she did not always feel at ease with her fame. In this episode of Something To Talk About, Asher sits down for a reflective chat as she looks back on the dizzying yet disconcerting experience of becoming a household name thanks to her starring roles in the hit TV series Love My Way and Offspring and explains how, in her mid-forties, she finally began to enjoy the fruits of her labours. She also discusses her role on the new comedy drama Strife, her marriage to artist Vincent Fantauzzo and - as she looks ahead to turning 50 next year - the bittersweet perspective she has on being an “older mother” to an eight-year-old son. Every episode of Strife will be available exclusively on Binge from December 6. In this episode, we sit down with the hilarious Damien Warren-Smith about the art of Clown and his character, Garry Starr. Damien is currently touring his latest production, Garry Starr: Greece Lightning which is coming to Darwin, the International Melbourne Comedy Festival and the Sydney Comedy Festival over the next two months. Damien shares the ins and outs of this unique form of theatre, his training at the École Philippe Gaulier, the creation of a Plague of Idiots, and how performers find their 'clown'. About Damien: Since graduating ACA's 2.5 year program in 2004, Damien has been making a massive name for himself in his sell-out one-man shows, under the comedic alter-ego GARY STARR, touring England and the world. As well as this, Damien landed the role of ‘James' in hit Aussie TV series Love My Way, in which he worked alongside Asher Keddie and Claudia Karvan, as well as working consistently in London and across the UK, on UK's hit TV shows Law & Order: UK, and the BBC's The Persuasionists. Warren made his professional stage debut in a production of Ladies Down Under for the Hull Truck Theatre Company, which led him to being cast in director Sue McCormick's highly acclaimed production of Hamlet at Lancaster Castle. The production was shortlisted for a Peter Brook Empty Space Award in 2008. Damien continued to further his training in 2013 with legendary clown teacher Philippe Gaulier, and then formed the comedy troupe ‘Plague of Idiots', which toured to theatre festivals around the world and eventually Edinburgh Fringe. Starring Nicole Kidman as Russian retreat leader Masha, the show tracks nine incredibly wealthy LA residents looking to aid their first world problems at wellness centre 'Tranquilum' - a self indulgent pity party that is more insidious than it first appears. Vincent Fantauzzo is one of Australia's most popular portrait artists.  He has won the Doug Moran National Portrait prize, is a four time winner of the Archibald People's Choice award and was recently commissioned to paint the official portrait of former prime minister Julia Gillard for the Parliament House collection. But his wasn't a smooth path to success. He grew up in a tough neighbourhood where you literally had to fight to get by and he learnt to survive by becoming someone that went against his true nature. Unaware he had dyslexia, he struggled at school and was kicked out at 13 years of age.  He worked from job to job but never stopped drawing and ultimately realised that was what he did best. How he got into and finished university is a story in itself. He is now an adjunct professor of that university, RMIT. In this episode he also tells the story behind many of his famous portraits: of actor Heath Ledger, film director Baz Luhrmann, acclaimed actress Asher Keddie (who is also his wife) and former prime minister Julia Gillard.
