Tim and Rick discuss the 1994, Paul Newman vehicle, Nobody's Fool (currently streaming on Amazon Prime). Why? Because Philip Seymour Hoffman could take a one dimensional character and give them a three-dimensional punch (he also gets punched. FUN!). What's up with the script for this film? Why is there a character called Whacker? What do minor roles accomplish in a story? Is this the most accurate portrayal of a cop we've seen in years? What's the difference between a first person actor and a third person actor? Has there ever been more random nudity in a film? How do you embrace your own style as an actor? All that and more in this fourth episode of "That's That: A Philip Seymour Hoffman Retrospective". This episode's guest is friend, filmmaker, and film professor, Rick Negron. You can follow Rick on Instagram. "That's That" is sponsored by One County Film Company, produced and hosted by Timothy Mark Davis, edited by Ryan Arnst, with show music composed by Jessica Rae Huber, and artwork by Drew Hanagen. Additional music from Peter John and Bortex. Our next episode is on the 2007 melodramatic thriller, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, currently streaming on HBO. A film featuring PSH at the peak of his career and co-starring oft quoted (on this podcast) friend and collaborator, Ethan Hawke.

Now that we have completed our journey through the months of 1994, we wanted to squeeze a couple of movies in that just missed the cut from getting standalone episodes during the January - December. First is William's pick, Nobody's Fool, one of the last great Paul Newman performances. Following that, we look at Charlie's pick, The Paper, starring Michael Keaton and one of the year's strongest ensemble casts. We will be back with more Reel Chance episodes and hope to mix up the format with future reviews and commentaries. IN THIS SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT, WE WILL ENCOUNTER VIA LUKE'S GOSPEL WHAT COULD, MOST ASSUREDLY, BE RECOGNIZED as a most misunderstood Jesus, a Jesus that, if we are not careful, is one we, too, could catastrophically misunderstand. One is challenged to find anywhere else in the gospels five verses that give us a full range of who Christ is, who the secular rulers are, and how these examples lay bare before us the challenges that lay before one who seeks to follow Christ faithfully. Leading up to this passage, Jesus has been going about engaging in some truly remarkable and quite unbelievable teachings - in the first thirty verses of this chapter, Jesus: Makes clear that following Christ is about leading a life that turns in a different direction to follow Him faithfully and fully (1-5); Challenges his listeners to have faith but also face reality (6-9); Gives the leaders of the faithful a more clear example of what sabbath-keeping is all about instead of being an excuse to ignore the needs of others (10-17); Exhorts his followers to not underestimate how much power even a little, seemingly insignificant amount of faith is truly transformative (18-21); Reminds them to guard against being too cocky with respect to their own salvation as well as to not be surprised at who really is faithful and who has had a false sense of assurance (22-30). Whew! Given all that, one can justifiably understand some of the religious folk being fearful of Christ's life when they bring him the message that Herod wants him killed. Jesus, of course, does not respond with fear, but instead, through his example, gives his followers examples that are as essential today as when first spoken. To wit, Jesus shows the faithful that we are to be people who: Have a faith that facilitates focus; Have a faith that brings to us the bigger picture; and, Have a faith that demands patience.

The new Tyler Perry movie, "Nobody's Fool" features a character making a list, a physical list, of things she wants in a relationship. Do people do that? DO they then bring them on dates and check off boxes when someone meets a requirement (not that this last thing happens in the film)? If that's reality, we want to know about it.

This week's episode seems to be filled with bleaker content... it wasn't planned that way, but hang in there. First Dhani discusses the rom-com Nobody's Fool. She talks about how Tyler Perry always creates male characters that say the right thing and work for the women who watch. :) Next, Dhani talks about a documentary on Netflix called Abducted in Plain Sight. This is tough subject matter, but it is quite a story that is a cautionary tale to all families. Moving on to TV, Dhani first talks about the new show I Am The Night based on the true story of Fauna Hodel's autobiography. It looks to be an interesting series directed by Patty Jenkins. The next show Dhani talks about is the live airing of RENT. Or the almost live production. Because this is her favorite musical, she was underwhelmed. The next show we discuss is the ending of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Dhani really enjoyed the way it ended and feels it is one of the funniest shows ever. Finally, Dhani watched a brand new show on Netflix called Russian Doll. She appreciates the female team of creators, writers, and directors because she believes that made the lead character, Nadia, feel more real with her trauma and the insane situation she finds herself in. For the Actors' Corner this week, we chose Whoopi Goldberg. We discuss the movies of hers that we love, like, didn't like, secretly love and haven't seen. Nobody's Fool (1:22) ★★★★ Abducted in Plain Sight (5:31) ★★★★ I Am The Night (17:30) RENT Live (23:30) Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (30:25) Russian Doll (35:43) Actors' Corner: Whoopi Goldberg (42:46)
The Damn Dirty Geeks had so much fun talking career projects, favorite movies, geek inspirations and monsters with our two special guests, Jennifer Lynn Warrenand Pruitt Taylor Vince-- we recorded for over three hours -- that we had to split their podcast episode into two parts! We open 2019 with Part 1 of this great episode, recorded just before the DDG went on holiday break, talking with these terrific and successful actors. You've seen Pruitt most recently in BIRD BOX on Netflix, among his many TV appearances including STRANGER THINGS, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., THE MENTALIST, TRUE BLOOD, DEADWOOD and THE WALKING DEAD to name a few. Fans of Pruitt's film work will know him from memorable feature roles in JFK, JACOB'S LADDER, NOBODY'S FOOL, NATURAL BORN KILLERS, ANGEL HEART and DOWN BY LAW. DDG listeners will likely know Jennifer's work best from AMERICAN HORROR STORY Season 3 as Borquita LaLaurie opposite Kathy Bates, the Fox series THE GATES, and the short film CREATURE which inspired a harrowing tale of her unintended interaction with a wild alligator! Our Part 1 discussion also delivers great insights from Jennifer and Pruitt on the beginnings of their careers, and what moments and influences in life helped set them on the path to "find their tribe" among actors on stage and film. This includes Pruitt's story about how he got into acting by accident, and how the group considers Boris Karloff's performance in FRANKENSTEIN as one of the most influential acting performances in cinema. Then we all get into a fascinating exchange about the history of horror movies, classic and modern, and how their mythologies play into franchises and sequels -- and how horror cycles transition into comedy and parody film cycles. Enjoy our first hour of great discussion on acting, filmmaking and entertainment with Jennifer and Pruitt in our first Damn Dirty Geeks episode of 2019 -- with Part 2 coming soon!

Nobody's Fool Review by The Reel Pineapple
In this episode we review Nobody's Fool. We're not going to sugar coat this one. It sucked. And try as she might - and believe you me, she tried her damndest and almost made it watchable - even the wonderfully talented and funny Tiffany Haddish couldn't salvage this train wreck. There was also a crazy guy in the theater who kept responding to the people in the movie as if they were talking to him. We talk to that guy as well. Wish we could have had him on as a guest, but you'll have to settle for Mike's impression of him.

The hosts give their "Go or No" votes for today's big movie releases for 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Nobody's Fool' and 'The Nutcracker and The Four Realms' on today's #FilmFridays! 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Nobody's Fool' | Season 3, Episode 30 Bohemian Rhapsody Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury's lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that were always more like a family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day. Nobody's Fool Trying to get back on her feet, wild child Tanya (Tiffany Haddish) looks to her buttoned-up, by the book sister Danica (Tika Sumpter) to help her get back on track. As these polar opposites collide - with hilarious and sometimes disastrous results - Tanya discovers that Danica's picture-perfect life - including her mysterious boyfriend - may not be what it seems. The Nutcracker and The Four Realms' All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key - a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer's (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key, which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world.

Twenty Summers was proud to bring together the accomplished and widely admired Richard Russo and Hannah Tinti, each on tour for a new book: Russo for Trajectory, a quartet of novellas; Tinti for her second novel, The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley, praised in the Washington Post as 'master class in literary suspense.' In addition to writing ten other books, including the Pulitzer prize-winning novel Empire Falls and the best-selling memoir Elsewhere, Russo is a veteran screenwriter. His novel Nobody's Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy. Tinti is also the author of an internationally acclaimed story collection, Animal Crackers, and The Good Thief, winner of the Center for Fiction's First Novel Prize. She is a cofounder and executive editor of the journal One Story and of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Italy. She was recently named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Brooklyn Culture. Russo and Tinti, friends as well as kindred authors, discuss life, literature, and anything else they please. Twenty Summers cofounder Julia Glass moderated. Media sponsorship by WCAI.

P.S. I Love Hoffman: A Film By Film Retrospective of Philip Seymour Hoffman
A re-recording of the podcast "I Hope You Die Soon", hopefully a bit smoother than yesterday's effort but still all about Advaita, Neoadvaita and Nonduality looking at the theory that all is just Oneness playing around and that there are no separate people really. With jokes galore it is more fun than it sounds, and will make you think too.
'This is not an attempt on my part to portray myself as anything like a prophet. I simply was born somewhere...I got to bear witness to something that was tremendously important to me and my family.' In this fourth and penultimate This Writing Life interview with Richard Russo, we begin with the fictional small-town of Bath that is found in both Nobody's Fool and its sequel Everybody's Fool. Russo discusses his own personal and artistic relationship with small-town life, taking in his childhood in Gloversville and how it has informed much of his work. From here we meander towards death, in fiction and life, with a cheerier side-track marked: how to begin a novel?----more----Other subjects include: Russo and religion Russo's childhood in Gloversville, New York the toxic effects of small-town industry on Russo's family is small-town life dying out in America? 'As a younger man I thought of [being born in a small-town] as something I would have to overcome in life...Only to come to learn that it is what has propelled my life forward...' Trump, Clinton, Sanders: 'who's to blame for the loss of American productivity, who's to blame for the loss of jobs?' who would Russo's characters have voted for in the 2016 election? Raymer and Sully: the 'fool' in Russo's work? Part 5 of 5 to follow.
Part two of This Writing Life's conversation with Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Russo begins with the idea of sequels: his new novel, Everybody's Fool is a follow-up to Russo's masterpiece, Nobody's Fool. What are the risks of continuing a story that is not just admired but loved? Did Russo intend to write a sequel to Donald 'Sully' Sullivan's adventures. What made him return in the first place? What was it like to revisit characters who were created over 20 years before? ----more---- From here we moved onto: Russo's relationship with his father: 'It shouldn't have been surprising that he had more to say' Russo's relationship with Paul Newman, who played Sully in Robert Benton's film adaptation of Nobody's Fool what did Newman see in the character of Sully? 'I think Paul became a different actor after his son died' age and destiny: Russo and Sully 'At 67, I am trying to understand what has happened to me...I am beginning to see the shape of my life...How the fuck did that happen?' the comedy of life-changing moments: 'All the things in my life that have worked out for the very best...are the results of the stupidest things I could have conceivably done' Russo and his mother: success, failure and American road trips Part 3 to follow.
Part 1 of This Writing Life's interview with the great American comic writer begins in media res. Russo is telling me about signing 9000 copies of his new novel, Everybody's Fool, in a warehouse in Maryland. Russo has recovered enough to discuss the idea of signed copies and what to do with his own personal archive. ----more----This idea of looking back leads us, neatly enough to, Everbody's Fool and the challenge of sequels: the book continues the story of Russo's masterpiece (to my mind) Nobody's Fool from 1993. From here we talked: what had Russo forgotten about his charaters, and what he hadn't what had changed since 1993? timing, iPhones and when is Everybody's Fool set? time and writing: what's the deal? Part 2 of several to follow.
For the 100th episode of This Writing Life, we celebrate with a very special instalment. Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Richard Russo reads from his wonderful, warm, funny and mordant new book Everybody's Fool. A sequel to one of our favourite novels - 1993's Nobody's Fool - it returns the reader to the life, opinions and travails of Donald 'Sully' Sullivan in the small upstate New York town of North Bath. In this scene from the distant past (the character Wirf Saks has died by Everybody's Fool), Sully and Wirf settle down in the local bar to discuss the sex addiction of the irrepressible Carl Roebuck. Enjoy.
Richard Russo has written 11 books, 8 screenplays, won a Pulitzer Prize (for Empire Falls), and most recently published the excellent Everybody's Fool, the sequel to one of This Writing Life's favourite novels, Nobody's Fool. When we met in London, we talked about everything from book signings to working with Paul Newman. Russo also discussed Clinton-Trump and the 2016 US Presidential Race. This Writing Life posts it now as a Special Podcast. The exchange begins with some general chatter on confusion and self-made men. Our lengthy interview with Richard will be posted later in 2016.
