Nick takes a look back at the legendary Olympia Diner sketches from the early days of *Saturday Night Live*. These classics are known for their memorable characters, the bustling diner atmosphere, the functioning flattop grill (LIVE on stage!), and of course, the catchphrases like “Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger…no Coke, Pepsi…no fries, chips!” This popular recurring sketch was performed a record six times in less than 15 months, between January 1978 and May 1979. Every member of The Not Ready For Prime-Time Players, along with hosts like Robert Klein, Buck Henry, Jill Clayburgh, and even The Rolling Stones, appeared in these iconic scenes. In this episode, you'll hear three of the Olympia Diner bits (including the very first one) and learn about the somewhat conflicted history behind them. Was the inspiration Chicago's Billy Goat Tavern, John Belushi's family diner, or a mix of both? Nick also explores how these sketches inspired future SNL classics like "You lika the juice??" Get ready to laugh a lot and, by the end, probably crave a cheeseburger! [Ep92]

Ricky and his shy, reserved cousin Angela are spending the summer at Camp Arawak, a bargain basement overnight camp in upstate New York run by Mel, cigar-chomping shyster, and staffed by a bunch of adult and teenage degenerates.  Angela is initially withdrawn, occasionally catatonic – but is soon brought out of her shell by Ricky's friend Paul, who takes a liking to Angela in the hopes he might be able to make it with her before summer's end.  But there are forces are at work – forces determined to put the strangely distant Angela in her place.  Bunkmate and camp harlot Judy sees Angela as a weirdo, then a threat when she attracts Paul's attention.  Counselor Meg, who can't get Angela to eat, play sports, or swim, constantly berates Angela for her failure to thrive.  That's when the murders begin, one at a time, first a staffer, then a camper, and on and on.  Mel tries to hide it due to the bad publicity, but as any good camp director knows, murder's bad for business, and the more we learn about Angela's murky past, the more things at Camp Arawak take a turn… for the deadly. In lieu of a new actor interview we're book clubbing 1979's Norma Rae starring Sally Field, Beau Bridges, and Ron Leibman. Norma Rae is inspired by the real story of mill workers unionizing in rural North Carolina. We get into all the important parts: Ron Leibman being hot, Burt Reynolds advising Sally not to do the film, and the beautiful appearance of legendary character actress Grace Zabriskie in a small role. The film is a small quiet human story about the importance of labor unions and it felt like the right time to correct our blindspot and screen it. Reviews reviews reviews, hey ho, let's GO! That said I'm still not a Ramones fan, though I like about 2 songs, whatever. Love them or hate em, let's kick off another round of 70's movie reviews. Today's offering starts off with a 1970 made for TV movie which later did get a theatrical release titled (The Tribe). Here the dad from a Christmas story, hates that the marines are now taking draftee's. He also hates hippies, especially one played by Jan Michael Vincent. Set a course for zaniness here on the military base. So great to see Darren McGavin play a drill Sargent. Seems unlikely but I heart it very much. Lets move on to (Walkin g stick 1970). Here we have Samantha Eggar as Deborah a cool person who is used for crime by this asshat. I believe it's called a love con. Lots of 70's London in this and she figures out asshat in the end, oops spoiler. I can't really figure out how the whole spoiler thing fits into our lil pod, I do know that I'd like to assume you've seen it and wanna hear our take, but also we could be turning you on to some great films so I'll keep spoilers to a minimum. Let's advance now to level 3 with (11 Harrowhouse 1974) and can Candice Bergen, Charles Gordon, and James Mason, make this jewel heist film NOT dull as dishwater. See Ma, no spoilers, HA. Ok next up is (Green Eye's 1977) No spoilers but we love us some Paul Winfield, and this made for TV movie about a very sweet man with a cool mom, trying to do right and cope with what happened in nam, that I've been searching for forever and is now on you tube, is flipping amazing!!!! Also it deals with a very under talked subject in film, and that's our war orphans. Along comes another made for t.v. movie that is finally available on you tube, and that's (Perfect Gentlemen 1978). So much amazing stuff going into this one, Lauren flipping Bacall, Ruth Flippin Gordon, Sandy flipping Dennis, with a script by Nora flipping Ephron. It's quite a feat that this doesn't seem to exceed the sum of it's parts. Oops spoiler. It is good though, and you can always listen, if you want to know more. Finally today we have (Starting Over 1979) this is also a film that has a lot of awesome goin into it. Screenplay by Mary Tyler Moore and the Simpson's creator James Brooks, Murphy flipping brown, Jill Clayburgh, Charles Durning, Francis Sternhagen, the expert directing of Alan Pakula, and even Burt flipping Reynolds. Lets hear it folks. I think this one delivers, but I may sadly be alone in that assessment, but I'm writing this SO , it's the best and is loved by all. He he, I'm having a bit of fun today, thank you dear listers for your time, please tell your friends and or write us a review. Love us or hate us we'll take the feedback form, today only. Seriously though , thanks.

Watching the world's greatest talent in rehearsals for her father's masterpiece, Hurlyburly, Lily was bitten by the performance bug early on. We discuss her time as a dancer and how that turned to acting, life at Northwestern and her very fancy degree, and how life almost imitated art when she played a restaurant-employed actor for the film No Reservations. She describes why her heart belongs to theater and the “religious experience” that is performing Shakespeare In The Park. We discuss being a part of the Ryan Murphy American Horror Story family, and in a quick fire round, Lily talks playing Liz Cheney, the sheer joy she felt during The Undoing, why George Clooney is the happiest person, and why her role in his The Tender Bar opposite Ben Affleck was a favorite, and why George and Ben are, too. We discuss crafting the complicated relationship her character Meg has with Harrison Ford's Paul in Shrinking, and we talk in detail about why embodying Betty Gore for Love + Death sometimes meant taking her home with her, for better or worse. Having worked with her husband Hamish over many years, Lily tells us why co-directing the soon-to-be-released film Downtown Owl whet their appetites for much more. And on the subject of  "more”, Lily tells us why she's feeling so fulfilled…. so will simply take some more of that, please. We touch on Presumed Innocent, ahead for her on AppleTV+ and co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga. We talk about how paying attention to saying no helped build her brilliant career, and why she looks to feel compelled to play a part. And lastly, Lily shares her great taste with a long list of her most favorite obsessions. We hope you love our conversation with everyone's favorite, Lily Rabe, just as much as we do. Paul Williams, the director (not the songwriter or the rock critic or the architect…) shares excerpts and outtakes from his memoir “Harvard, Hollywood, Hitmen & Holy Men” currently available as part of the Screen Classics collection from the University Press Of Kentucky. Williams is the director of “The November Men” which World is Wrong listeners will already be familiar with, as well as films like “Out Of It” (1969) and “The Revolutionary” (1970) both starring a young Jon Voight. Williams, with his production partner Edward Pressman, was a producer of films like Brian DePalma's “Sisters” & “The Phantom Of The Paradise” as well as Terrence Malick's “Badlands”. Beyond the movies, Paul rode the many of the movements of 1960's, 70's & 80's, both political and cultural, with characters as varied as Julie Christie and Huey P. Newton, Fidel Castro and most of the “important” directors associated with New Hollywood If you're interested in the story of New Hollywood, Paul's memoir fills in some major gaps. And if you're too lazy to read the book, this podcast will give you a taste of what you're missing. EPISODE THREE - MARGOT & THE GANG When Paul and Margot Kidder fell in love in Hollywood in 1971 they found themselves at the center of a scene that included Brian DePalma, Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Jennifer Salt, Waldo Salt, Jill Clayburgh, Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel, Steven Spielberg, and Margot's neighbors; producers Julia Phillips and her husband Michael.  Paul wanted to start a commune. Carolyn Petit returns as special guest to lead our discussion of the 1970s on the penultimate episode of our “Hollywood by the Decade” series. She selected two acclaimed films to focus our discussion. From 1971, Alan Pakula's KLUTE, in which Jane Fonda plays a sex worker who teams up with an investigator (played by Donald Sutherland), to search for a missing person who'd once been a client of hers. In Paul Mazursky's 1978 film AN UNMARRIED WOMAN, Jill Clayburgh stars as an Upper West Sider who navigates dating, friendships, and parenting an independent teenage daughter in the aftermath of an unexpected divorce. Two disparate films about female characters directed by men, but connected by a very 1970s focus on character with glimpses into their inner thoughts and lives.Links Mentioned:Angelica Jade Bastién's Criterion Collection essay about An Unmarried Woman: https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/6975-an-unmarried-woman-the-business-of-being-a-woman“Everyone is Beautiful and No One is Horny”: https://bloodknife.com/everyone-beautiful-no-one-horny/Find Carolyn:twitter.com/carolynmichelleFind Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsSubscribe to our Star Trek PodcastTwitterInstagramtwitch.tv/femfreq (every Thursday at 6:30pm PT)

Håber i vil lytte med og god mandag til jer alle.

Chick Flicks with Gabby & Amy

You may think that Bridesmaids is simply a frothy and filthy farce about the wedding-industry complex and female friendship--and you would be correct. But its critical and commercial success also neutered the perpetual sexist argument that women aren't funny and that a comedy with an all-female cast can't succeed.

In 1979 Jane Fonda, aka Hanoi Jane (at the time (or maybe to some still)), took home her second Oscar for Coming Home. This was a monumental win not only for Fonda but also her career. Much of America believed her to be a traitor to her own country due to bad selfie stick moments in Vietnam #oops. As a result, she didn’t work in any major motion pictures for years after the incident and her movie career kind of tanked… I really have so much respect for this woman, not just as an actress but also as a brand reinvigorator. She completely remedied her public image over time and won an Oscar, not bad. Other nominees that year included Geraldine Page for Interiors, Ingrid Bergman in Autumn Sonata, Ellen Burstyn in Same Time, Next Year, and Jill Clayburgh for An Unmarried Woman. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Dan Dillabough as they discuss.

“If there's ever anything that you need, don't call me.” For Colin Higgins' second film, he wanted to write something that had a Hitchcockian flair, and he was partial to the thrillers on trains. What we got – and what Arthur Hiller deftly directed – was Silver Streak. What we also got was the legendary comedy pairing of Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, two comedians who would end up making three more films together after this. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Colin Higgins series with Hiller's 1976 train thriller Silver Streak. We talk about Pryor and Wilder and if blackface comedy is still something we're allowed to laugh at, especially when the actors are so clearly pointing out that it's not okay. We chat about the thrills balanced with the comedy in this film and how well it works. We look at Wilder and Pryor, but also Jill Clayburgh, Patrick McGoohan, Ned Beatty, Clifton James, Scatman Crothers, Ray Walston, Valerie Curtin, and Richard Kiel, to see what they're all bringing to the table. We touch on Henry Mancini's score and the vibes it brings. And we look at the many tropes throughout this film, wondering if they work well here because at the time, they likely weren't as commonly used as they came to be. The Oscar-nominated star of An Unmarried Woman and Starting Over, who passed away on Nov. 5, 2010 after a long battle with leukemia, spoke with Milling About host Robin Milling in 2001 about the state of comedy in Hollywood. “Funny, human and real roles are hard to come by at my age,” said the then-57-year-old actress in this never-before-aired interview. “It really irritates me when I watch TV and I see these women just demonized in their 60s— like they're stupid and old. I don't find it funny. I don't know if anyone really finds stepmother humor or mother-in-law humor—whatever it's called—very funny.”
