Author and memoirist, Nefertiti Austin writes about the erasure of diverse voices in motherhood in the #1 Amazon bestseller Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender and Parenting in America. Nefertiti's work around this topic has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, The Nation, Romper, Adoptive Families magazine, Parents Magazine, SheMedia and countless others. She has appeared on numerous podcasts and radio programs including “The Today Show”, and multiple NPR outlets. Lately, she's writing about raising her neurologically diverse daughter and jokes that adolescence is no match for menopause. Most importantly, Nefertiti is the proud adoptive Shameless Mom of two children and two Shipoos - Monsieur Lafayette and Siddhartha. Nef and I connected through a mutual friend and two time SMA guest, Debbie Reber. Debbie was kind enough to introduce us and Nef was generous enough to say yes to my invitation to come on the show. Listen in to hear Nefertiti share: What Black adoption looks like compared to typical white adoption Her intentional journey of building her family as a single adoptive mom How race and gender factor into parenting neurologically diverse children How having a neurologically diverse child changed her life in ways she didn't see coming How she has had to explore her own triggers when it comes to her daughter's behaviors How the murder of Trayvon Martin became a wake-up call for her responsibility of raising a Black son What she wants white parents to know about how Black parents or parents of Black children parent from a place of fear What visible allyship feels for Black parents and children and how white parents can be more assertive, if note aggressive, in their allyship Links mentioned: Connect with Nefertiti: Nefertitiaustin.com Get Nef's Book: Motherhood So White: A Memoir of Race, Gender and Parenting in America Nefertiti on IG Nefertiti on FB Nefertiti on X We love the sponsors that make this show possible! She is a Shameless Mom to a 5-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a brand new little one born last month. Her journey through motherhood inspired her mission to provide better feeding support to mothers with newborns and infants. You know baby feeding is a topic near and dear to my heart, as I struggled so desperately to feed Vinnie in his first 6 months of life. It had a tremendous impact on my mental health and on his physical health. I was so thrilled to meet Andrea and dig into this really important topic. Emily Lynn Paulson is a Shameless Mom of 5 and the author of Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, and the forthcoming Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing (May 2023). She has given two powerful TEDx talks, both challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. Paulson has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show. I found Emily and her work by way of Instagram and was instantly obsessed with the conversations she was having around the cult-like behavior of MLMs. As she was sharing about the overlap between MLMs, cults, and Supremacy culture, I knew I had to reach out to ask her to come on the show. I know so many moms have participated in MLMs at one time or another. This conversation is in no way intended to shame, but to shed light. Whenever I talk about MLMs in a negative light, I get messages from women who say, “But the MLM I'm in is different.” Maybe it is, but I want to make sure you have as many tools as possible to be a critical thinker and observer of what happens inside the organizations that benefit and profit from your participation. Listen in to hear Emily share: What inspired her first book, Highlight Reel, on her journey to sobriety What an MLM (multilevel marketing) company is, why they are so seductive, and how they are problematic, if not harmful The commonalities between the seductiveness of mommy wine culture and MLM culture The exploitative nature of targeting moms in MLMs The connection between MLM culture and White Supremacy How those working in “women's empowerment” can be part of systematic brainwashing and indoctrination Links mentioned: Connect with Emily: emilylynnpaulson.com Emily's Sober Mom Squad: sobermomsquad.com Emily on IG: instagram.com/emilylynnpaulson Emily on TikTok: tiktok.com/emilylynnpaulson We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Are you burnt out on parenting? The root cause of parenting burnout is an imbalance between the demands of parenting and the rewards. How often do you get to the end of a day of parenting and think, “This was a really hard day.” If that's happening more often than not, listen up… Parenting burnout is very common, but not so commonly talked about. It's not super cool to run around town letting folks know you're burned out on raising your kids. But the truth is… you may very well be burned out on raising your kids! A May 2022 study by Ohio State University researchers surveyed 1,300 parents and found 68% of female parents were burned out and 42% of males parents were burned out. They also found two-thirds of working parents reported being burned out. Additionally, 75% of parents with a history of personal anxiety reported experiencing parenting burnout. And, parents whose children had been diagnosed with ADHD or anxiety were more likely to experience burnout. You can tell by these numbers that parenting burnout is very real - even if no one is talking about it. So, let's talk about it and normalize it, shall we?! This will allow us to all lean on one another and perhaps even heal. In this episode, I talk through the symptoms of parenting burnout, factors that increase parenting burnout, and strategies to start healing from parenting burnout. This is an important episode. Listen in and share with others you think may need support around this topic. The timing of this episode is pretty ironic. I was walking home from dropping Vinnie off at school this morning and couldn't shake this ominous, anxious feeling. I was thinking about some projects I have coming up and had these little wee bits of self-doubt creeping in. Then I popped on to social media to see that the entire rest of the world 100% had their lives figured out on this Monday morning and my wee bits of self-doubt blossomed into a rapid onset of Comparisonitis. A few hours later, I sat down to look at my content calendar and see that I'm supposed to talk to you all about positive thinking today. Haha. I see you Universe - just smiling down on me… So, here's the thing. Positive thinking is a critically important coping skill and the advantages of positive thinking cannot be overstated. But those of us who tout it certainly are not incapable of waking up with a case of the Mondays, as I did today. The power of positive thinking is that you can use it as a tool to navigate a tough moment or as a way to ground yourself #everydamnday. It can be a cornerstone of your life if you so choose. When it comes to the long-term integration of positive thinking as a coping skill, the advantages of positive thinking become glaring and beautifully evident. In fact, there are 5 advantages of positive thinking that are especially impactful across your lifetime. 5 Advantages of Positive Thinking: Resiliency and grit More rewarding personal and professional lives Enhanced relationships and kindness toward others Improved physical health, esp heart health and immunity Decreased symptoms of depression and anxiety* *This is definitely not to suggest that positive thinking is a treatment for clinical depression or anxiety. We talk this through in the episode. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, please talk to your doctor. In this episode, I talk you through 5 advantages of positive thinking and 4 ways to use positive thinking as routine coping skills in your daily life. Erika Hayasaki is a Shameless Mom of 3. She is the author of Somewhere Sisters, the true story of twin girls who were born in Vietnam separated at birth and raised in different parts of the world. She has received awards from the Association of Sunday Feature Editors, the Society for Features Journalism, and the American Society of Newspaper Editors. Erika's book is a stunning and captivating story of the intersection of nature vs nurture with twins, interracial adoption, identity, and the meaning of family. This was such a powerful conversation. Listen in to hear Erika share: About her book, Somewhere Sisters, the true story of twin girls, born in Vietnam and separated at birth, and raised in different parts of the world How she reconstructed the sisters Ha and Loan's stories and their reunion when they were 13 The science around nature vs. nurture from twin studies The unexpected trauma that can come with twin and adoptee reunification that we don't see play out in TV and movies How she had to follow the journalistic truth of each person's story in the book and not be connected to her own hopes for the girls and the story The legislative loophole in which international adoptees are not automatically granted citizenship and the push for legislation to change it The ethical considerations of interracial adoption How sharing our layered identities with one another allows for a more connected human experience Links mentioned: Book: Somewhere Sisters Erika on Twitter Thank you to our sponsors this month: care.com: Get the help you need to make it all work for your family at care.com/book. I couldn't help but dig into something I've been working on in live time: TRIGGERS. It seems everybody is talking about their triggers these days - to the point that it's almost cliche. In fact, the term is used so loosely that it can be insulting to folks who have experienced serious trauma and have triggers that deeply impact their ability to show up and function in the world. I've made no secret about my PTSD diagnosis. Over the last couple of years, I have been exploring this diagnosis in therapy and more recently in a hypnotherapy session. I have learned so much. In today's episode, I'm sharing a bit about what I've learned as it relates to the things that trigger me. It's important to note that I am not a therapist or a mental health professional. I'm sharing this because I think some of you will be able to relate to and learn from my anecdotal experience. If this episode triggers you or makes you curious about hypnotherapy, you can reach out to my hypnotherapist Nadia Ahrens at nadiaahrens.com. For many people, there are few worse things than rejection or the threat of rejection. The fear of rejection can cause anxiety, depression, and the most relentless stress. It can stop us from going after what we want and what we deserve. It can keep us stuck for a season - or a lifetime. When you think about fear of rejection and what that might look like for you, I want you to consider what might drive your fear of rejection. What might the underlying causes be? Some common causes of fear of rejection are: Past life events Past rejection or abandonment Past trauma Poor self-worth, self-esteem, sense of self Susceptibility to anxiety, self-criticism If you can identify where your fear of rejection stems from, it's more likely you can talk your way through it and give it less power over you. For example, as a person who was abandoned by her father as a little girl and again as a 38-year-old woman & new mom, it is helpful for me to remind myself that my father was unable to show up for me for a myriad of reasons. Those reasons were his. They are not a reflection of my worth or my value. They are also not any indication of how others will treat me. In fact, every other human in my life has shown they are very capable of showing up and supporting me. When I talk myself through all this, I can see how I am very likely to be supported in my life no matter what I go after or if I screw up from time to time. In this example, you can see where my fear of rejection might stem from as well as how I walk myself through it. You can see that in accepting my fear, labeling my fear, affirming my worth, and challenging my beliefs/past narratives, I'm able to walk my way right through this fear to a healthier place where I can show up for new things, hard things, big things, scary things - knowing that I don't have to be perfect, get everything right, impress anyone or prove anything. In this episode, I talk through 7 steps you can take to overcome the fear of rejection in order to show up for your life, go after what you want, and get all that you deserve. I know I'm not supposed to have favorites, but I can't help myself. One of my all-time favorite episodes to record was Mom Guilt Is a Lie. The reason I loved this episode is multipronged. First, I pointed out to you that the mom guilt you feel (that is very real) comes from a massive lie fed to you by the Patriarchy. Second, in making it clear where your guilt comes from, many of you would be able to release the grip that mom guilt has had on you over the years. And finally, I knew that if you could see mom guilt as a myth, you could also become someone who questions other culturally ingrained messages for moms - liberating not only yourself from the constant marginalization of moms, but hopefully so many other moms around you too! While I know many of you benefitted from that episode, I know that you are not miraculously healed. You are likely still struggling with mom guilt. My hope is that this episode will help you see how mom guilt plays a role in your life - likely a harmful role - so you may begin to heal from it. In this episode, I talk through 3 ways mom guilt is harming you. Once you see the ways it is harming you, it's likely you will see how you can start to let it go in order to show up for your life in new and liberated ways! Today, she is sharing her story with us in a new way - talking about the release of her stunningly breathtaking memoir, Stash. I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Laura's book and read it on my way to & from London last fall. I found myself trying to contain my crying and cheering for my dear friend, Laura, on each flight. As I've worked with women through growth and transformation over the last 20 years, I've had countless conversations about partners & spouses who, “just don't get it.” Back when I was working with my personal training clients and boot camp members, women would come to be fraught about spending money without their husband's approval. When I started running programs inside the SMA, moms came to me so eager to participate but very uncomfortable about talking to their husbands about investing money in an online program with a coach they met on the internet, especially a coach selling “personal development for moms”. I totally understand that it can be awkward to work on goals that aren't connected to your partner, especially if you haven't done that before. And… if that's you, I want to invite you to consider why you haven't taken steps to work on yourself independently in the past? Not from a place of judgment, but from a place of genuine curiosity. As I've helped so many women show up for themselves and step into growth over the last 20 years, I've also seen the frustration that comes when you are growing, growing, growing, and hoping your partner will follow suit, and they're like, “Nah, I'm good.” There can be a decent amount of tension when partners are growing in different directions or one partner is committed to growth and the other is not. As you've become more Shameless as a listener of this show, perhaps you've wondered, “How do I encourage my partner to make some of the changes I've made?” In today's episode, I talk through this tension. The tension of becoming more autonomous. The tension of codependency. The tension of doing your own work and letting a partner decide on their own what work they do or don't do. Listen in to hear Gabrielle share: Why she has always integrated “controversial” content into her parenting blog, Design Mom, and how that led to her writing Ejaculate Responsibly Her mission to put men at the center of attention and center of responsibility when it comes to the conversation around unwanted pregnancies Why the management of women's fertility should be shifted to the management of MEN'S fertility since men are fertile 365 days a year and women are fertile for a mere 36 or so hours a month. Why we have built a 100+ billion dollar women's birth control industry around the idea that we don't mind if women suffer as long as it makes things easier for men The reality that most men are actually quite open to taking responsibility for their ejaculation if they are given the right information How to talk to your kids about responsible ejaculation Links Mentioned: Gabrielle's Book: Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion See Gabrielle on tour: Book Tour: https://designmom.com Check out Alt Summit: https://altitudesummit.com/ Gabrielle on Twitter and Instagram: @designmom Amy Lang on the SMA: Birds & Bees & Kids Amy Lang on the SMA: Sex Talk with Tweens Thank you to our sponsors this month: care.com: Get the help you need to make it all work for your family at care.com/book. One of the most common questions I've gotten over the years is, “Sara, how do I find my passion?” Often this question is followed by some lamenting over the fact that one has not yet found their passion. Sometimes society tells us that if we are not committing our life's work to something we are passionate about, we are wasting our time or our talent. I would like to argue that sometimes it's ok to do something you're not 100% passionate about because it provides you security and stability (ie: a paycheck and benefits). AND, I get it…. Doing meaningful work that is aligned with your passions and gives you a sense of purpose is highly desirable. AND… the world needs your gifts! So, please don't hold back from sharing them with us. SO, how do you know when to go after what you're passionate about? How do you determine the thing you want to passionately pursue? How do you know when it's the right time to pivot? Over the last 20 years, I've spent a lot of time building businesses around work that I'm deeply passionate about - work that gives me a massive sense of purpose. But there have also been moments (even seasons) where I have sat in pretty “MEH” situations in order to strategically plan my next pivot. In this episode, I share a few examples so you can see what this looks like in real life. Maybe you're ready to pivot right now or maybe you're looking out at a 5-year plan toward your purpose. Either way, I got you - and this episode will give you some great insight. Link mentioned: Interested in Business Coaching with Sara? If your voice has value and you're using it as an agent to heal yourself and help others, it's your job to be aware of the external noise you allow to inform your thoughts, beliefs, and actions. There will be people who try to diminish your voice, your power, and your credibility. There will be people who do not believe you, who downright oppose you, who say you are not who you say you are. There will be people who, out of their own insecurities, will deny your gifts, roll their eyes at your talent, and question your motives. How will you handle those who are disrespectful, dismissive, diminishing, and doubtful of who you are becoming? This is a big question. It can be a lot to wrap your head around as you choose a path of growth, power, and agency. So YOU must know who you are and what you stand for. In this episode, we will categorize the Haters, the Doubters, and the Skeptics in a meaningful way that will allow you to more clearly see how these folks take up space in your life. Then we will walk through 3 questions to ask yourself as you navigate interactions and situations with these folks so that you may conscientiously decide who gets to have a vote in who you are becoming and who does not. Your voice has value. Period. Even when others are questioning it, doubting it, or downright denying it. Sisters Yvette Gentile and Rasha Pecoraro are primarily recognized as the co-hosts of the wildly popular podcast “Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family and the Black Dahlia,” a 2020 iHeartRadio ‘True Crime Podcast of the Year' nominee. The dark story of their mother Fauna Hodel's life became a six-episode limited television series “I Am The Night,” which premiered in January 2019. Yvette and Rasha have returned to the airwaves with a new weekly podcast, Facing Evil. In their latest venture, the siblings bring their unique perspective of growing up in a family with a dark history, to true crime with a focus on the victims and individuals at the heart of the stories. Outside of podcasting, Yvette is also an actor, model, and sandal designer with her husband Gino. She is an avid yogi who trains for and practices classes specific to individuals confronting distress and long-term grief and pain. Rasha was a fierce competitor on “The Biggest Loser” in 2006. Since then, she's advocated for beauty at any size as a plus-size model and married her wife Vanna in 2010. She is a proud LGBTQ+ advocate and activist, mother, as well as an actor and voiceover artist. Listen in to hear Rasha and Yvette share: What it was like for Rasha to marry a man on national TV after being a contestant on the Biggest Loser - and then realize she was gay and come out out of the closet in a very public way The impact of their unique sister relationship of being a gay-straight passing blond woman and a black biracial woman - standing side by side as sisters What it's been like for both Rasha and Yvette to embrace the spotlight in a big way as the layers of their family story is shared across multiple media platforms The impact and imprint of many tragic true crime stories on US history How they have intentionally stayed away from sensationalism and salaciousness in true crime podcasting, and instead opted for sharing humanity, compassion, and empathy in their stories Links mentioned: Podcast: Facing Evil Facing Evil on IG Rasha on IG Yvette on IG Thank you to our sponsors this month: care.com: Get the help you need to make it all work for your family at care.com/book. What if your feelings of inadequacy had nothing to do with you? What if they were because you have been conditioned as a woman and a mom that no matter what you do, it will never be enough? Perhaps you have been conditioned to believe that everyone else has it all figured out. Perhaps you are never validated or affirmed as a woman and a mom because society has systematically dismissed and diminished our value, our contributions, and our worth for centuries. Perhaps those feelings of inadequacy, while very real, are not yours to own. Perhaps the burden to alleviate those feelings falls on the systems and people who have diminished us. But they don't know that. They don't see that. And until they do, it's up to us to undo their damage. SO… let's unravel it all so you can step back and see the bigger picture. In this episode, I walk you through 4 things that fuel inadequacy for most women and moms and then a 4 part framework to intentionally and permanently walk away from your feelings of inadequacy and into your worth, your gifts, and your talents Thank you to our sponsors this month: care.com: Get the help you need to make it all work for your family at care.com/book. I suspect your daily life is loud, literally and figuratively. Noise from your kids, your partner, your boss, noise on social media, the news, and the entire world outside your door. As you move through the world listening to all the noise, it's easy to lose track of your own voice and your inner knowing. With all the outward listening, it's easy to forget to listen inward. I recently had a situation where I found myself feeling very uncertain, even physically uncomfortable, as my gut was telling me, “This doesn't feel right.” While I love to rush through things in order to check them off my list, I made myself sit with this feeling and really listen to it. And I'm so glad I did. As I sat with this feeling, I made some requests of the people around me while this feeling took place. They were unable (or unwilling) to reassure me or provide any validation for what I was feeling, which confirmed my gut feeling: I shouldn't stay in this situation. In this episode, I share this entire situation and the steps I took to give myself the space and time to listen inward as this situation unfolded. I hope this gives you some guidance on how to do the same. We are taught from the time we are wee little girls to prioritize the voices and comfort of others over our own. NO MORE. Monica Packer is passionate about teaching practical-but-deep transformation. As a podcaster and coach, she guides women to find sustainable growth by adopting progress over perfection. Monica is a former middle school teacher, a forever Oprah fangirl, a perpetual cookie dough maker, and an ambitious walker (the last one is a joke . . . sort of). I had a really hard time relaxing over our holiday break. I knew January was going to be a big month for me in terms of work opportunities and I was feeling some nerves for sure. I kept telling myself to “just relax” until January kicked off, but my anxious brain could not. If you have an anxious brain like me, perhaps you can relate to how foolishly ineffective it is to tell yourself to “just relax”. BUT… Now that we are IN January and I'm IN these opportunities, I'm having a blast. I'm running right up to some big edges of discomfort as I do new things and I'm having a great time seeing things come together. As I was wrapping up last week, I had to remind myself: “You are good at figuring out new things.” “It feels really great to challenge yourself by finding new professional edges.” “The high that comes after reaching a new edge is the best.” As I mentioned, I have an anxious brain. I excel in worrying about things before they happen. Sometimes that worry exists for months before an event or life situation and it takes a lot out of me. I have done a lot of work to minimize this worry, but it definitely still creeps in at times. I love challenging myself because I love - LOVE - the feeling of achievement. But I hate the feelings of worry (sometimes even dread) that can precipitate some of the best moments of my life. One of my top techniques to mitigate this worry is to really sit in the feelings that follow pushing my edges. I do this with skiing, with uncomfortable conversations, with new leadership opportunities, and when I'm working with new organizations - so pretty much anytime I'm doing something unknown or uncertain! In this episode we talk about how to use these questions to lean into the magic of your new edges: How did that feel? How did you use your skills, gifts, and talents to accomplish what you wanted to accomplish? What does this accomplishment tell you about yourself and the person you are becoming? Cheers to a year of new edges, my friend! I'm in Arizona to lead a training tomorrow. I led part of this training online a while back and an attendee emailed me after and said, “Sara, my team NEEDS your training.” As we talked through what her team needs most right now, I got pretty excited. I knew I could leap right into “Secret Lies” with them and help them shift their mindset and the stories that take up space in their heads in big ways. If you're anything like - oh - every single human being, you likely walk around all day with different stories in your head. Stories about yourself, your life, your legacy, your past experiences, your qualifications, and your capabilities. So many stories. All day, every day. As you navigate the world, do you ever stop to think, “Is the story I'm telling myself helping me or harming me?” Oftentimes, women tell themselves stories that are diminishing and minimizing in a myriad of ways. Things like: You're not good enough/smart enough/thin enough/qualified enough. If you do this, it's ok. Society has conditioned you to do it. It's totally normal. But, it's also totally harmful. Luckily it's avoidable. In this episode, I help you see how your secret lies might be standing in your way and how you might be able to reframe them in honest, authentic ways that give you a much greater sense of power, purpose, hope, and JOY in your everyday life. Early in my personal training career, I had a boss shame me in a huge way. It started in his office where he degraded me. But it continued out into the main gym where he made a colleague of mine mentor me in front of all the other trainers - as if I was a brand new, completely inexperienced trainer when I was not. It was an awful - AWFUL - experience. But, having gone through that, I was able to show up for myself as a strong self-advocate a few years ago when someone tried to take me down in a very public way. I was also able to take a stand when my own father tried to publicly humiliate me on my business page about a year ago. If I hadn't figured out how to reframe my secret lies into courageous truths waaaaay back in my personal training days, those incidents would have cost me so much more mental energy and anguish. Today's show with keynote speaker, business and leadership coach and Step into Your Moxie® facilitator Sara Dean, was five years in the making and worth the wait! Sara is the creator and host of the Shameless Mom Academy Podcast, a top rated podcast with over 600 episodes and 5 million downloads. What I so appreciate about where Sara is on her journey, is her intention to move beyond the doing for doing sake to a thoughtfulness about what matters most and why, a shift she opens up about. I hope this conversation, and the challenge Sara offers us to cut the crap and calm the chaos, inspires us to show up as Sara does, with humility and bravery, honesty and humor, and as she says, shameless #everydamnday. Today we talk about what it means to Play Bigger Without Asking for Permission. It's an important topic especially in light of last week's conversation about imposter syndrome. Notables: Women have historically tried to shrink their bodies which carries over to their minds. Sara's goal is the opposite; to help women take up space We ask for permission partly because it has been modeled that way - women have been trained to ask for permission before we allow ourselves to do things Own your superpower: Be really clear about what we're good at. Say it out loud. How do you identify your superpower? It's often what we're naturally good at, what feels easy to us. It's okay to pick the easy thing, Give yourself permission to not be good at everything. For moms who are raising boys: What do we do to help them support strong girls and women? Sara says, "Model the behavior we want them to see. Help them make space for others' experiences."
