Why is historical awareness so important in order to form a strong personal identity? What are the risks of a culture overly centered on safety and fragility?Frank Furedi is an emeritus professor at the University of Kent and director of the think tank MCC Brussels. Frank is also the author of several books. His latest work is titled The War Against the Past: Why The West Must Fight For Its History, and he has also written How Fear Works: Culture of Fear in the Twenty-First Century, First World War: Still No End in Sight, Power of Reading: From Socrates to Twitter.Greg and Frank discuss the disparagement of the past in contemporary culture, the influence of identity politics on historical interpretation, and the educational system's decreasing demands on students. They also discuss the decline of practical wisdom and the impacts of education on cultural values. Frank critiques the modern tendency to detach from historical legacies, highlighting the dangers of presentism and the moral devaluation of the past. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:Understanding history beyond simplistic narratives07:26: People say Martin Luther, who isn't the hero of mine, but nevertheless played an important role in the Reformation, was the antecedent of Adolf Hitler, that already in his authoritarian behavior, there were the seeds of what would happen in the 1930s and 1940s. And that kind of simplistic history means that you do not even actually understand what is unique and special about the Holocaust. What is the tragedy that we fell upon us? If you see that merely as more of the same, because then you forget about the Enlightenment, you forget about the incredible achievements of German culture. Someone like Heine, Beethoven, and some of the artistic sort of endeavors that existed there. And impoverish our own sensibility through doing something like that. And I think a mature individual learns to be critical of the horrible things that have occurred in the past whilst at the same time learned to valorize and affirm what were very positive contributions to human civilization. The Renaissance as a positive way of viewing the past05:01: The Renaissance is really about rebirth, and there's a very strong sense in which what they wanna do is they wanna reappropriate the best that existed beforehand. And, in the course of reappropriating it, what they want to do is to make it come alive within their own lifetime. And I think that's a really positive way of dealing with the past. The transformative power of books35:41: Books are important because it kind of demands an element of interaction between you and the author. And what happens is that, sort of as you're going through the pages and reading them, it has the potential to stimulate your sensibilities in a way that provides you with both an aesthetic element but also an intellectual element. I think what is really great about a book is that it is both something that stirs the emotion and, at the same time, makes you aware of the fact that there are problems with these ideas, these existentially difficult kinds of questions. Which basically means that you can, on a good day, come out a slightly different person than when you began that journey when you kind of started on the first page. How inclusion and market forces are reshaping education44:54: What the woke, idea of inclusion does is it fundamentally changes the culture of academic learning, because now what becomes important is the student rather than the subject. So you have what's called student-led learning, which I think is a travesty of any kind of intellectual engagement because in a real academic setting, you have a partnership between the academic and the students that have come in there. So I think it's both a cultural dilution of academic standards alongside the market-driven impulse. And it's the convergence of the two, which is why you have a situation where you have administrators, professional administrators, experts kind of becoming the best allies of the inclusion diversity merchants. It's almost like they got this unholy alliance of controlling the university through their coalition.Show Links:Recommended Resources:PhronesisRenaissanceDark AgesFrench RevolutionPol PotMartin LutherCiceroAncient EgyptCleopatraDavid LowenthalThomas HobbesVirginia WoolfGuest Profile:FrankFuredi.orgProfessional Profile at MCC BrusselsFaculty Profile at the University of KentWikipedia ProfileLinkedIn ProfileSocial Profile on XNewsletter on SubStackHis Work:Amazon Author PageThe War Against the Past: Why The West Must Fight For Its HistoryHow Fear Works: Culture of Fear in the Twenty-First CenturyFirst World War: Still No End in SightPower of Reading: From Socrates to TwitterWhat's Happened To The University?Therapy CultureFreedom Is No Illusion: Letters on LibertyOn Tolerance: A Defence of Moral Independence100 Years of Identity Crisis: Culture War Over SocialisationPolitics of FearGoogle Scholar PageThe Guardian Articles

Show Notes: Are Google and Meta Screwed? And does it make any Sense?April 18, 2025OverviewThis week's newsletter delves into a pivotal moment for two of tech's biggest players: Meta and Google. Long dominant through strategic acquisitions and platform control, both are now under intense legal scrutiny. At the same time, a new platform shift—centered on AI—threatens to upend their business models, just as geopolitical forces reshape global markets.Listeners will gain insight into how antitrust battles, legacy acquisitions, AI innovation, and trade wars intersect to challenge the future of these giants. We'll connect disparate articles to reveal patterns that go beyond individual stories.Key TrendsKey Trend 1: Government Antitrust Pressure and Legal BattlesSignificance: After decades of unchecked growth, Meta and Google face unprecedented antitrust scrutiny. The outcomes could reset the rules for digital markets—and determine whether breakups or massive fines become the norm.Talking Point 1: Meta's High-Stakes Trial“In a just world, the FTC has no shot to win this case. The case is so nebulous and weak…”– M.G. Siegler, “The Meta Points of Meta's Trial” (https://spyglass.org/meta-trial/)• Highlights the FTC's challenge: litigating past acquisitions with vague theories of harm.Talking Point 2: Google Guilty in Ad Tech Monopoly“A judge ruled that Google holds a monopolistic position in the technology of online advertising, unfairly harming rivals and advertisers.”– David McCabe, New York Times(https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/technology/google-ad-tech-antitrust-ruling.html)• Marks the second major U.S. court loss for Google in under a year, setting the stage for structural remedies.Key Trend 2: Strategic Platform Shifts and Legacy AcquisitionsSignificance: Meta's survival has hinged on buying Instagram and WhatsApp; now those very deals are under fire. The pattern echoes past shifts—desktop to mobile—and underscores how acquisitions can both secure and imperil platform relevance.Talking Point 1: The Value and Vulnerability of Instagram“Without Instagram, Meta is screwed.”– M.G. Siegler, Spyglass (https://spyglass.org/without-instagram-meta-is-screwed/)• Shows Instagram's ad revenue underpins Meta's funding for new bets (metaverse, AI).Talking Point 2: Echoes of the Mobile Battle“Facebook 2.0 will try to kill Facebook 1.0 and Google 2.0 will try to kill Google 1.0.”– Editorial, “Are Google and Meta Screwed?” (Newsletter for April 11, 2025)• Reminds us how prior platform shifts demanded reinvention—AI may require the same.Key Trend 3: AI‑Driven Disruption and the Next PlatformsSignificance: Just as mobile upended desktop, AI is redrawing the map of search, discovery, and social engagement. Meta and Google must adapt to challengers like OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and novel features such as memory and reasoning.Talking Point 1: AI Search and Discovery Race“OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and Grok capture users for AI based search and discovery.”– Editorial, “Are Google and Meta Screwed?”• Signals user migration away from traditional search and feeds.Talking Point 2: The AI Price War and Memory Features“OpenAI slashes prices for GPT‑4.1 by up to 75%, igniting an AI price war among tech giants.”– Bryson Masse, VentureBeat (https://venturebeat.com/ai/gpt-4-1-ai-price-war-developers/)“Claude's memory feature … allows the chatbot to recall details from previous interactions.”– Michael Nuñez, VentureBeat(https://venturebeat.com/ai/claude-just-gained-superpowers-anthropics-ai-can-now-search-your-entire-google-workspace-without-you/)• Underscores how product feature arms races could outflank legacy ad models.Key Trend 4: Global Economic Realignments and Trade WarsSignificance: Tech doesn't operate in a vacuum. Tariffs and nationalism are reshaping supply chains and consumer behavior, with knock‑on effects for digital giants reliant on ad dollars and global audiences.Talking Point 1: Tariffs as a “Tectonic Plate Shift”“Trump's tariffs are part of a broader movement in the global economy which he describes as a ‘tectonic plate shift.'”– Peter R. Orszag, New York Times video (https://www.nytimes.com/video/opinion/100000010103488/trumps-tariffs-are-part-of-a-tectonic-plate-shift-in-the-global-economy.html)• Reflects how trade policy uncertainty seeps into tech investment and consumer prices.Talking Point 2: The End of Globalism vs Economic Globalization“Globalisation as we've known it for the past couple of decades has come to an end.”– Frank Furedi, Spiked (https://www.spiked-online.com/2025/04/15/the-end-of-globalism-is-nigh/)• Positions economic nationalism alongside persistent interdependence—tech firms must navigate both.Discussion QuestionsHow do the FTC's and DOJ's strategies against Meta and Google reflect a shift in government confidence and capability to regulate tech giants?Would breaking up Instagram and WhatsApp—or forcing Google to divest its ad tech—spur innovation or simply weaken platforms in an era of AI competition? In what ways has the shift from mobile to AI mirrored past platform transitions, and what lessons should Meta and Google apply as they pursue “2.0” strategies? Is the AI price war (GPT‑4.1 cuts, Claude memory, Grok features) a sustainable model for developers and businesses, or will it erode margins across the ecosystem?Do Trump's tariffs and rising economic nationalism ultimately strengthen China's tech incumbents (Huawei, Temu, Shein) more than they pressure U.S. companies? (Controversial)With visionaries like Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk calling to “delete all IP law,” how should tech firms balance creator rights against AI training needs? (Controversial) 7. How does the narrative of “the end of globalism” influence Big Tech's investment in international expansion and localized product strategies?Closing IdeasMeta and Google stand at a crossroads: legal rulings threaten their core business structures while AI challengers redefine user engagement.Their historic playbook—acquiring emerging rivals and evolving ad models—now collides with fast‑moving technology, activist regulators, and geopolitical headwinds.Final Thought: Survival for these giants will depend on agility—embracing AI as the next platform, rethinking past acquisitions, and navigating a world where borders, both digital and national, are being redrawn.Generated on 4/18/2025 with Newsletter Creator This is a public episode. There's an old Soviet joke that goes something like "the future is certain; it's the past that is unpredictable" which continues to have an eerie resonance today, as revisionism seems to be on a constant assault against past events which are challenging or complex for some people to accept based on modern social mores and values. In his new book, "The War Against the Past: Why The West Must Fight For Its History," the renowned sociologist Frank Furedi takes aim at those commiting these acts of cultural vandalism and denounces, in quite strong terms, the damage and disservice they are doing to our society by projecting these modern sensibilities upon the historical record. In this conversation with Robert Amsterdam, Furedi expands on his thesis and delves into some of the examples of victimhood and "grievance entrepreneurs" surrounding the twisting of narratives from events more than two centuries ago. When the past is rendered toxic, Furedi argues, we begin to live in an inhumane society, one where time is divided into a bad past and a rightly engineered future, and which splits people into shamefaced identities and victim identities. The author makes a call to arms to fight back, to celebrate heroes, to stop apologizing, and to embrace history, warts and all.

The endless culture wars rage on. In his new book, The War Against the Past, the sociologist Frank Furedi believes that unless what he calls “the West” fights for its history, the “grievance entrepreneurs” will take over and undermine all our hard won intellectual freedoms. It's the convention conservative argument, of course, but what's interesting about Furedi is that he used to be a revolutionary communist. So I wonder if Furedi's rightward shift is the standard intellectual fate of old leftists. Alternatively, perhaps, the woke crowd has become so corrosive that even former communists like Furedi are now manning the barricades in defense of western civilization.Frank Furedi is a sociologist and social commentator. He is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent in Canterbury. Since the late 1990s, Frank has been widely cited about his views on why Western societies find it so difficult to engage with risk and uncertainty. He has published widely about controversies relating to issues such as health, parenting children, food and new technology. His book Invitation To Terror; Expanding the Empire of the Unknown (2007) explores the way in which the threat of terrorism has become amplified through the ascendancy of precautionary thinking. It develops the arguments contained in two previous books, Culture of Fear (2002) and Paranoid Parenting (2001). Both of these works investigate the interaction between risk consciousness and perceptions of fear, trust relations and social capital in contemporary society.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. I just wrapped up a great conversation with author and public intellectual Frank Furedi, who is ever-interesting. Frank has a new book, The War Against the Past, which I haven't read yet but is on my must-read list. Given Frank's heterodox and thoughtful writings, I've put this on my “Must Read” list. Frank and I frequently cross paths at conferences, and I always find his commentary insightful and clear. Although we strongly disagree on some issues, I've always found Frank open to conversation, dialogue, and even friendly debate. We discussed the politicization of identity and his concept of "decivilization," which he explains in detail. I also asked him about his shift from the far left to his now conservative views. We touched on species relativism (versus cultural, moral, or epistemological relativism), as well as the impact of politicization on public discourse and his work with MCC's  think tank in Brussels. I'm looking forward to speaking with Frank at Genspect in Portugal and seeing him again in Hungary and possibly Romania. I hope you enjoy our episode. Thanks!

For Ashley's mental health (which she disagrees with the term mental health journey itself), we discuss an eating disorder she lived with from the age of 14-21 years old, how viewing it as a health issue was not helping her tackle it initially and how a change in her outlook on the condition, allowed her to get a handle on it and eventually overcome it. On today's #NCFWhittle, we are joined once again by Prof. Frank Furedi of MCC Brussels. Prof. Furedi's new book is The War Against the Past: Why The West Must Fight For Its History (https://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Against-Past-Fight-History/dp/1509561250). "A war is being waged against the Past. Whether it's toppling statues, decolonising the curriculum or erasing terms from our vocabulary, a cultural crusade is underway designed to render the past toxic. It is condemned as enemy territory and has become the target of venomous hate. What is at stake in provoking such a strong sense of societal shame towards Western history? "In his book, Frank Furedi mounts a fierce defence of the past and calls for a fight back against the delegitimization of its ideals and accomplishments. Casting the past as a story of shame has become a taken-for granted outlook permeating the educational and cultural life of western society from the top down. Its advocates may see it as a cultural imperative, but a society that loses touch with its past will face a permanent crisis of identity. Squandering the wisdom provided by our historical inheritance means betraying humanity's positive achievements. Challenging this great betrayal, Furedi argues, is one of the most important battles of our time."

We also delve into the constraints of EU membership on national sovereignty and how this feeds into a growing public demand for greater democratic accountability. Our conversation takes you through the media's role in shaping political narratives and the diminishing trust in mainstream institutions. Myers and Ferretti share their insights into recent European elections, where traditional strategies have failed to counter the populist surge. You'll hear about the unexpected political behaviors among Gen Z, particularly in France and Germany, and how right-wing parties are gaining traction. We also explore the broader implications for European democracy and political engagement, considering whether populists like Italy's Giorgio Maloney will continue their rise or if the establishment can fend them off. Since mid-December, a corruption scandal has been unfolding in Brussels that could soon begin rock the European Union's (EU) very foundations. Eva Kaili, a 44-year-old Member of the European Parliament (MEP), was detained by Belgian authorities along with three other suspects—including fellow MEP Marc Tarabella and Kaili's partner, an assistant to another MEP—for allegedly accepting large bribes from foreign government officials in exchange for whitewashing the image of those governments in Brussels. Qatar was frontline in the scandal, but so was Morocco, and more recently, even Mauritania. As this episode goes to press, no less than 1.5 million EUR in cash have been seized, much of which was lying around the house of Kaili's father, who is also ensnared. With the World Cup then about to take place in Qatar and amid widespread allegations of unsafe working conditions for migrant workers hired to build the facilities, Kaili and her fellow suspects had their work cut out for them. Now—the scandal's implications cannot be overstated. While the EU has long labored under critiques of its democratic legitimacy, the moral legitimacy of its leaders has largely gone unquestioned. That all changes now. To discuss the repercussions of this scandal, we have with us Frank Furedi, executive director of Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) Brussels and Thomas Fazi, a columnist at UnHerd and Compact. Both of these works investigate the interaction between risk consciousness and perceptions of fear, trust relations and social capital in contemporary society. Frank has also written extensively about issues to do with education and cultural life. His book, Wasted: Why Education Is Not Educating (2009) deals with the influence of the erosion of adult authority on schooling. On Tolerance (2011) offers a restatement of the importance of this concept for an open society. Authority: A Sociological History (2013) examines how the modern world has become far more comfortable with questioning authority than with affirming it. Frank is committed to promoting the ideals of a humanist education and his writings on higher education are devoted to affirming the value of the liberal arts. His forthcoming book is titled Democracy Under Siege: Don't Let Them Lock It Down! and will be published by Zer0 Books in October 2020. The book offers a positive affirmation of the principle and the value of democracy. At present he is engaged in a research project that explores the history of the relationship between the problem of identity and the difficulty that western society has in engaging with issues pertaining to morality. His work has as its focus on the process of socialisation and intergenerational relations. Furedi's studies on the problem of morality run in parallel with his exploration of the problem of cultural authority. Since Authority, A Sociological History (Cambridge University Press 2013) he has published a study a study The First World War: Still No End In Sight – which interprets this event as the precursor of today's Culture Wars. His study, Populism And The Culture Wars In Europe: the conflict of values between Hungary and the EU, discusses the sociological implications of the tension between populists and anti-populist political currents. His forthcoming book, Why We Need Borders seeks to explain the significance that physical borders and symbolic boundaries have for providing communities with meaning. Frank's books and articles offer an authoritative yet lively account of key developments in contemporary cultural life. Using his insights as a professional sociologist, he has produced a series of agenda-setting books that have been widely discussed in the media. His books have been translated into 13 languages. Frank regularly comments on radio and television.

When the emergence of Covid-19 and resultant restrictive measures were imposed across the globe in early 2020, the world witnessed submission of an unprecedented and surprising nature. One motivator, fear, is fairly obvious and understandable but it in no way explains the collective psychology in play. BizNews spoke to Professor Frank Furedi, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and the author of several books covering the cultures of fear and safety which have insinuated themselves into practically all corners of society. Furedi highlighted a particularly interesting side-effect of the pandemic: the downgrading of human capacity and simultaneous inflation of threat. Another fascinating observation explored was the way in which the fundamental subject matter that children are taught has shifted from the virtues of courage and morality to psychological values such as self-esteem. This shift, together with the growing undercurrent of safety culture, is a breeding ground for an infantalised, anxious future population. Learn more about your ad choices.
