Zwischen 1933 und 1945 sahen sich die Kirchen in Deutschland der schwierigen Aufgabe gegenüber, ihre religiöse Identität und institutionelle Selbstständigkeit innerhalb eines totalitären Regimes zu behaupten. Während die evangelische Kirche aufgrund ihrer Aufteilung in 28 weitgehend autonomen Landeskirchen nur locker organisiert war, verfügte die katholische Kirche mit dem Papst über eine klar definierte, zentralisierte Führung. Diese strukturellen Unterschiede prägten maßgeblich die jeweiligen Reaktionen auf die Ideologie und Machtpolitik des Nationalsozialismus. Die katholische Kirche bemühte sich vor allem auf diplomatischem Wege – etwa durch den Abschluss des Reichskonkordats – ihre Rechte und Handlungsspielräume zu wahren. Zugleich erhoben einzelne Bischöfe und Geistliche durch Predigten, Hirtenbriefe und konkrete Hilfeleistungen ihre Stimme gegen staatliche Übergriffe. Die evangelische Kirche hingegen wurde innerlich zerrissen: Während die Deutschen Christen die nationalsozialistische Weltanschauung weitgehend übernahmen und die Gleichschaltung vorantrieben, formierte sich in der Bekennenden Kirche ein entschiedener theologischer und institutioneller Widerstand.

Verschwörungstheorien sind kein Phänomen der Moderne. Schon in der Antike wurden den frühen Christen Vorwürfe gemacht, sie hätten sich verschworen und eine neue, geheime Sekte gegründet. Besonders häufig steht dabei das Konzil von Nizäa im Mittelpunkt, das sich im Jahr 325 versammelte und dessen 1700. Jahrestag in diesem Jahr begangen wird. Immer wieder wird behauptet, die versammelten Bischöfe hätten unter dem Einfluss von Kaiser Konstantin beschlossen, Jesus zum Gott zu erklären – ein Vorwurf, der etwa von den Zeugen Jehovas oder auch von Muslimen vertreten wird. Eine Frau und ein Mann beim Bier. Der Hund will auch und lässt nicht locker, bis ihn der Mann Bier lappen lässt. «Wo-n-i e Kind gsi bi, ha-n-i au e Hund gha», sagt der Mann, und die Frau antwortet: «Bisch du emoll e Kind gsi?» – «Dängg dr, jä.
