I learned a valuable, and painful lesson years ago. I met three customers for important lunch, and for the second time, I was 15 minutes late. Little did I know that the leader of the customer group was an ex-marine, and punctuality was a standard operating procedure for him. As I greeted everyone and sat down… I got my head handed to me. From that day on, I have worked diligently on trying to be punctual in business. It's probably one of my biggest weaknesses in business, and life. I constantly try to get better at it. What say you? Where do you fall in the spectrum of punctuality? What improvements can you make?Support the show

Rebecca Hinds: Your Best Meeting Ever Rebecca Hinds is a leading expert on organizational behavior and the future of work. She founded and led the Work Innovation Lab at Asana and the Work AI Institute at Glean, where she partners with leading experts to help organizations transform their work with AI. She is the author of Your Best Meeting Ever: 7 Principles for Designing Meetings That Get Things Done (Amazon, Bookshop)*. Considering the amount of time we all spend in meetings, it's odd that most organizations do so little to measure meeting results. If that's sounding familiar, this conversation between Rebecca and me will show you exactly how to get started. Key Points Metrics that only measure the costs of meetings (dollars and time) can be useful, but rarely capture the full picture. Use Return on Time Invested (ROTI) anonymously to survey attendees to determine if a meeting was a good use of time. Also ask, “What would it take for you to improve your rating by one point?” Survey sparingly to avoid survey fatigue. Bringing in a survey 10% of the time is a benchmark to start from. If the amount of time in meetings vastly exceeds 10 hours a week, there's likely an opportunity to scale back or redefine the work before or after meetings to use time better. Equal speaking time in meetings is a key indicator of team performance. Be transparent with employees about any technology you use to capture data. Punctuality and attendance rate are indicators of how valued meetings are for people. What if the values that made you who you are — resilience, service, empathy — could become the operating system for an entire organization? Today's guest grew up in Hialeah, Florida, the son of Cuban immigrants who arrived in America with almost nothing and built everything through grit, integrity, and an unwavering belief that hard work is the price of admission. He lost his father at 12 years old, found his footing in the U.S. Army — where he'd eventually jump out of planes at night as part of an Airborne unit — and then quietly built one of the most storied careers in the travel industry. David Herrera served as President of Norwegian Cruise Line, where over more than a decade he helped transform the company's commercial operations, led its expansion into China, and championed a genuine, veteran-driven military appreciation program that earned him letters, mugs, and thank-you notes from guests whose gratitude had nothing to do with the bottom line. But what strikes you most about David isn't the titles or the milestones — it's that he leads the same way his mother lived, the same way his Army sergeant Mahoney taught him: from the front, with his word as his bond, leaving no doubt whose side he's on. In this conversation, we talk about growing up in a Cuban immigrant household that embodied the American dream, what the military teaches you about trust and team that no MBA program can replicate, how he thinks about culture not as a poster on the wall but as the answer to the question — who's winning here, and why? — and what it really means to be a servant leader when the stakes are high. In this episode we discuss: Hire your manager, not just your job. The person above you shapes everything about your early career experience. Choose them wisely. If you're not early, you're late. Punctuality is ultimately about respect — for other people's time and for the commitments you make. Share the victory, own the setback. When things go right, celebrate the team. When things go sideways, step forward and take responsibility. Culture is what gets rewarded. Not what's written on the wall — but who's winning in your organization and what it is about them that you actually respect and want to replicate. Treat everything as a learning opportunity. Doesn't matter if you're painting parking lots in Miami heat or running a division — be in the moment, observe what works, and study what doesn't so you can avoid it. Lead from the front. Never ask someone to do something you haven't done or aren't willing to do alongside them. That credibility is the foundation of real trust. Know your foxhole friends. Who in your life both genuinely cares about you and is capable of showing up when it counts? That combination is rarer than most people realize. Sometimes the right business decision comes at a personal cost. Separating emotion from judgment is one of the hardest and most important skills a leader can develop — and it never fully stops stinging.

Why do top performers, respected leaders, and trusted professionals all share one trait? They're never just on time—they're early. In this episode, we unpack the hidden power of arriving ten minutes early to meetings, interviews, and events. Discover how this simple habit builds trust, reduces stress, sharpens your focus, and opens the door to stronger relationships. You'll learn practical strategies to plan ahead, avoid common time traps, and use those precious minutes to set intentions, gather your thoughts, and magnetise the outcomes you want. Respecting time—yours and others'—is more than politeness; it's a game-changing advantage. Song: Ten Minutes Early (Is On Time) [Verse 1] Plan for the traffic, plan for the rain, Give yourself space, avoid the strain. Take a breath, gather your thoughts, Win the meeting before it starts. Shake a hand, share a smile, Build rapport, it's worth the while. Respect their time, respect your fate, Remember this rule—don't arrive late. [Chorus] Ten minutes early is on time, On time is late, don't cross that line. Better to breathe, prepare your mind, Than rush in stressed, and fall behind. Ten minutes early, make it a trait, On time is late… on time is late. [Verse 2] Start with the end in mind, write it down, What do you seek when you come around? Outcomes magnetised, clear and bright, Walking in ready, your aim in sight. Confidence grows when you're prepared, Opportunities show you cared. Lost time is gone, can't recreate, That's why the wise never arrive late. [Chorus] Ten minutes early is on time, On time is late, don't cross that line. Better to breathe, prepare your mind, Than rush in stressed, and fall behind. Ten minutes early, make it a trait, On time is late… on time is late. [Bridge] “Punctuality's the soul of business,” they say, Shakespeare warned, “better hours too soon than a minute too late.” Benjamin Franklin said, “Lost time's never found again,” So honour each moment, it will pay dividends. [Chorus – repeat, with energy] Ten minutes early is on time, On time is late, don't cross that line. Better to breathe, prepare your mind, Than rush in stressed, and fall behind. Ten minutes early, make it a trait, On time is late… on time is late. [Outro] Respect their time, respect your fate, Ten minutes early… on time is late.
Chad Hartman and Lindsey Brown in for a Tuesday edition of The Chad Hartman Show Chad opens the final hour of the show addressing the recent inflammatory comments made by Minneapolis City Council Member Aisha Chughtai about the Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey. Chad thinks the outburst is unbecoming of someone who holds her position in office. He notes the prevalence of this kind of rhetoric in our current state of politics. But that doesn't mean that speech like this comes without consequences. Jamie Yuccas makes her weekly appearance on The Chad Hartman Show. They start their conversation about their punctuality profile because apparently your personality plays into whether or not you arrive on time. Jamie shares a personal story from her early days in LA dealing with a boss who mandated everyone to be at work at 8:00 am sharp. They then wade into the hot debate of height requirements in the dating pool.

New Zealand airports and its national carrier may be suffering the winter blues in new data showing the punctuality of global air travel. The June figures base its rankings on flights arriving and departing within 15 minutes of schedule. Air New Zealand has dropped to tenth in the Asia Pacific region after sitting in the top five earlier this year. No airport in the country cracked the global top 20. Air New Zealand General Manager of Airports Kate Boyer told Heather du Plessis-Allan the seasons play a big part in this. She says it's impacted by the likes of de-icing, foggy days, and storms throughout winter. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Punctuality – its definition and importance really depend on who you speak to. A recent study out of the UK shows a generational divide when it comes to tardiness and how it could be perceived by those around us. Host Melanie Ng speaks with peak performance coach and best-selling author, Hina Khan @coachwithhina, about a number of scenarios and why there is a sweet spot when it comes to how you show up both professionally and socially. I saw this post that I shared with some students I'm working with, mainly because it made me think about how I needed this reminder too. Also, I keep telling students, the earlier they grasp onto some of these lessons, they will have so many opportunities come their way that many adults never, ever see. This came from Mindful Maven (@mindfulmaven_) where it was shared -”Punctuality is not about being on time, it's basically about respecting your own commitments.” Sure being on time is important, but what's even more important is us to see that it is directly connected to how we see ourselves as being worthy of the effort. The things & people that we need to connect with, those take time. If I value who I am, where I want to go, what I want to build my life to be, who I want to add value to, etc., I will make sure I will be “on time” for those things. For many of those things, it's a simple matter of “I'll actually do those things”. I will follow up with myself because I promised myself (and others) that I'd do something. I need to think of myself with such value that I'll find a way to see that it's really something we need to & get to, DO… for our own goals and dreams. Why keep “showing up late” in our own life?? Being late doesn't just waste time — it erodes trust. Let's talk about why being early matters more than you think.Welcome back to the Multifamily Collective!Today, Mike Brewer brings the heat on a topic he's radically passionate about: punctuality.Showing up on time — or better yet, early — isn't just about good manners. It's a direct signal of respect, trust, and personal accountability.Mike shares a powerful story about a new airline CEO who taught his team a lesson they'd never forget — one that translates perfectly to the Multifamily world.Because when team members show up late, when make-readies slip behind schedule, when service promises go unmet — trust breaks down. And when trust breaks down, everything suffers: morale, operations, and the resident experience. If you're a leader who wants to raise the bar on culture, accountability, and excellence, this episode is a must. And don't forget — RSVP now for Podcast Palooza during NAA's Apartmentalize Conference at MultifamilyMediaNetwork.com!If punctuality is a value you're ready to double down on, tap Like and Subscribe. Let's build a culture of trust in Multifamily, together.
In this encore episode, host Wendy Hanson engages with Dr. Julie Pham, founder of CuriosityBase, to explore the critical role of respect in relationships, particularly in the workplace. They discuss the seven forms of respect — procedure, punctuality, information, candor, consideration, acknowledgement, and attention — and how understanding these can enhance communication and collaboration within teams. Key takeaways: Good processes require positive relationships to be effective. Respect is a key component in both personal and professional relationships. The seven forms of respect help articulate needs and expectations. Procedure involves adhering to established norms and rules. Punctuality reflects respect for others' time. Information should be shared openly to foster inclusion. Candor is essential for constructive feedback and growth. Consideration involves anticipating others' needs and wants. Acknowledgement reinforces positive contributions and builds morale. Attention is crucial for effective communication and respect. This episode is one that I know a lot of you have asked about because, let's be honest, group interviews are intimidating. They're uncomfortable, they're high-pressure, and half the time you walk in wondering if you're supposed to treat the other candidates like competition or potential coworkers. If you've never been a part of a group interview, you are not alone. I actually haven't either (at least not as a candidate), but I have sat in on the other side, and let me tell you, there are things I've seen that still haunt me. That's why I am spending time in this episode to break down everything that you need to know about handling a group interview with confidence. I am, of course, talking about the factors that are within your control, the things that will make you stand out in the right ways while others are making rookie mistakes. I also discuss why it is that some companies even choose this style of interviewing (it's not just about saving time) and what they're really watching for when you're sitting with that group of strangers. This episode is all about preparing you for the group setting so that if and when you find yourself in one, you're not thrown off. You will know exactly what to do and what not to do in order to leave the right impression. Thanks for tuning in! Key Takeaways: Research the company and role thoroughly before the group interview. Dress professionally, and bring multiple copies of your resume, along with a notebook and pen for notes. Punctuality is critical, so plan ahead for traffic, parking, and navigation; aim to arrive 5-10 minutes early. Avoid distractions such as your phone - stay engaged and ready to interact from the moment you arrive. Group interviews assess teamwork and communication, so engage respectfully with both the interviewers and other candidates. Thanks again for listening to Leaving The Nest!
