In this episode, Roxy returns to the pod to help Julia explore the fascinating history of scent: from ancient Greek perfumers on Aphrodite's island to Abercrombie cologne cloud terrorism. Plus, the girlies explain why smell is uniquely different from all our other senses, the Proustian relationship between scent and memory, and how capitalism has transformed our desire to smell good into a billion dollar identity crisis. Digressions include being flexed on by your parents, a man who generously donated his hair to a horse, and society's collective Mrs. Meyer's trauma. In this episode of Together Real Bad, we get real about personal hygiene in relationships — the funny parts, the awkward parts, and the honest conversations couples do not always know how to have. We talk about everything from body odor, sweating, deodorant, oral hygiene, and grooming habits to the bigger question of what it really means to be comfortable with your partner. We also dig into how hygiene issues are not always just about cleanliness. Sometimes they can point to stress, burnout, depression, or something deeper going on emotionally. We discuss the importance of approaching these conversations with honesty, care, and compassion instead of judgment. This episode also gets very real about the everyday things couples eventually have to face if they are building something lasting: farting, showering together, being on your period, grooming changes, and learning to accept each other as full human beings instead of polished versions of ourselves. It is funny, transparent, and very much us. We also spotlight a Black-owned streetwear brand, Made It Through the Struggle (MITTS 217), and share a little love for the story behind the brand. What we talk about in this episode: How to bring up hygiene issues in a relationship The difference between normal body funk and a real hygiene concern Oral hygiene, deodorant, and grooming habits When hygiene issues may be connected to mental health Flatulence, periods, and body acceptance in relationships Why comfort and transparency matter in long-term love A Black business spotlight you should check out Closing thought: Real intimacy is not just about attraction — it is also about acceptance, honesty, and being able to handle the unglamorous parts of being human together.
It's not a stretch to say that everyone suffers from unwanted body odor from time to time. Whether it's stress, exercise, or heat, there are plenty of reasons why we sweat and there is a lot to learn about our bodies from the odors they create. To learn more about the science of body odor, Dr. Samantha Yammine is joined by Dr. Chris Callewaert, aka Dr. Armpit. Before that, Sam also digs into a new skin patch that might help out our friends with peanut allergies. Then, she explores a new theory into how the Black Death pandemic was able to spread so easily way back in the 1300s. Join her free health & longevity newsletter here: https://www.drvondawright.com/resources/aging-longevity Through decades of caring for women as an orthopedic sports surgeon, I've seen how many health challenges go unspoken. Body odor, vaginal health, and the shame and silence around them are not small issues. They affect confidence, relationships, and how women move through the world. In this conversation, Shannon and I explore how a simple clinical observation became a breakthrough in understanding how odor works on the body. We discuss why women were taught to mask symptoms instead of understanding their source and how deeply stigma has shaped the way they experience their own bodies. Shannon shares her journey from clinical practice to building products based on physiology rather than marketing myths. We also talk about the power of listening without judgment and giving women the language, knowledge, and permission to understand their bodies without embarrassment. What we cover: - How Shannon's clinical practice revealed a hidden but widespread problem for women - Why odor is a bacterial issue, not a hygiene failure - The difference between masking symptoms and addressing root causes - How shame has shaped women's health messaging for decades - Why the vulva, skin folds, and external body deserve the same scientific attention - What it takes to challenge medical dogma as a woman physician - The leap from medicine to entrepreneurship and the resistance along the way - Building products that respect women's intelligence and lived experience - Why listening to patients changes everything - How confidence, dignity, and health are deeply connected About Shannon Klingman: Dr Shannon Klingman is an OB-GYN, innovator, and founder of Lume. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight, and we discussed a simple fitness "test" that can supposedly determine if you'll die in the next 10 years. Thursday mornings mean hypothetical questions for each other, and Jean's question for Brian was: "If you had to give up TV shows/Movies for six months, or internet/social media for six months…which would you choose?" While Brian's question for Jean was: "Would you rather have really bad breath or really bad body odor?" We also talked to Office Cora to see what she's up to in the 715 this weekend! Great story about a kid in Chicago who missed his graduation because of a heart transplant, but the officials from his school held a special graduation for him in the hospital! And another great story about a high school coach in New York who suffered a heart attack at a soccer game, but was saved by a bunch of people in the crowd who knew how to give CPR Today's "Friggin' Sports" involved Stanley Cup winner, Aleksander Barkov…and his unique journey with the Cup after Florida beat Edmonton on Tuesday night. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a soda business that got scammed, an 84 year-old man who fought off a potential thief with his pants, a group of women who were badly injured by a giant "I Love Tacos" sign at a taco festival, and another Karen meltdown on a flight.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When Dr. Shannon Klingman was an OB/GYN resident, she noticed that women came to the doctor repeatedly with complaints about body odor. To make matters worse, she watched women leave with a false diagnosis for the odor and often unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions. She saw how body odor was undermining the confidence and self-worth of women everywhere and knew she needed to be the change. That's how Lume whole body deodorant was born. In this powerful episode of “From First Period To Last Period,” we separate fact from fiction as Dr. Klingman explores how female body odor changes throughout the different life stages and provides tips on managing these changes effectively (and confidently!). Brought to you by Rescripted and Lume, a revolutionary deodorant brand offering whole-body odor control that's seriously safe and outrageously effective for anywhere you have unwanted body odor.

In this episode I dive into the fascinating connection between diet and body odor, sharing personal anecdotes and scientific insights to help you understand how what you eat can influence how you smell. There are two main types of sweat glands: eccrine glands and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands produce a watery, odorless sweat that helps regulate body temperature, while apocrine glands (found in areas like the armpits and groin) secrete a thicker fluid that's rich in proteins and lipids. When the fluid produced by apocrine glands interacts with skin bacteria, it leads to body odor. Diet can influence which glands are more active and how their secretions interact with your skin. Consuming a diet high in processed foods and sugars can lead to increased activity of apocrine glands, whereas a diet that's rich in meat and low in processed foods supports a healthier skin microbiome (and thus, less smell). Plus, certain foods (like garlic and onions) can add sulfur compounds to sweat, exacerbating your BO. In my personal experience and experiments, following an animal-based diet — combined with cutting out antibacterial soaps that can disrupt the skin's microbiome — has reduced my body odor so significantly that I no longer have to wear deodorant. For those still needing a deodorant, I'll share my experience with a natural, beef tallow-based deodorant from Nose to Tail that is effective and made from non-toxic ingredients. This episode is a must-listen for anyone struggling with body odor or who is looking to understand the deeper connections between diet, bacteria, and personal hygiene.
