Matthew 20:1-16 — If Christians tend to grumble, commiserate, and feel sorry for themselves, is it because they've forgotten grace? Murmuring stems from a belief that one deserves something more. As a result, they're never happy and become a complaining people. In this sermon on the parable of the workers in the vineyard from Matthew 20:1–16, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explains that the murmuring person has forgotten that everything is grace. To illustrate this point, Jesus gives us the parable of the laborers in the vineyard. This sermon highlights the grumbling of those who have been in the faith for a long time. They are complainers; they feel they deserve more than the others. They started out well, but got into trouble later on. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones applies this parable to the human condition today. Christians have the gospel of Jesus Christ, but if they do not continue in it, they get into the same trouble. They become entitled and believe they deserve more. What they forget is this: it's all grace. It's always been grace. In the Christian life, all is grace, from the beginning to the end. Christians are called to do all things without murmuring. What a tragedy when Christian people become miserable. What a tragedy when they murmur. The same grace that saved them keeps them. Listen and rejoice––it is all of grace.

May we guard our lips when it comes to complaining. We do a great disservice to the Kingdom of God when we complain, especially if it's a habit.

Psalm - God's eternity and the brevity of human life. Numbers - Korah's rebellion. Murmuring and plague.
Murmuring manifests as a secret displeasure that isn't openly expressed, similar to gossip but done quietly and often under the breath. This subtle form of complaining keeps wounds alive by continuously breathing life into past hurts instead of allowing healing to take place. It breaks God's direct commandment and prevents Christians from being effective lights in the world, while attracting and creating groups of wounded people. It systematically destroys essential elements of spiritual life including joy, unity, faith, peace, hope, and relationships. The biblical solution to counter this destructive habit involves three key practices: rejoicing always, praying without ceasing, and giving thanks in everything. These practices help maintain an eternal perspective rather than getting caught up in temporal issues.

A devotional study about the difference between complaining directly to God about things in our lives that are disturbing or frustrating us, vs murmuring to others about how God is dealing with you. There is a subtle, but very important difference, as we will see with some Bible story references.Numbers 14:26-27 KJVAnd the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against Me.”Related Podcasts:— Preparation for the End Times— Lessons from the Book of Job #1— Lessons from the Book of Job #2— Lessons from the Book of Job #3— Lessons from the Book of Job #4— Lessons from the Book of Job #5 — Missing the Mark— The Gospel of Opposition— Search Me, O GodRelated Podcasts at TrueWisdom:— Preparation to do Great Things— The People Rebelled— Complaints, Complaints, ComplaintsSupport the showIf you have any questions or comments, please send them to: BibleQuestions@ASBzone.comDuring many of our podcasts, you will hear us make reference to “The Key Principles of Effective Bible Study,” a document which outlines core concepts shown in the scriptures that will help you better understand many Biblical themes and doctrines. Welcome to Stupid Hearts Club. The Entertainment Community for everyone with a creative, open, loving, romantic and gloriously stupid heart!-------------------Hey there my Stupid Hearted angels.Hey you lovelies,Am wearing my Music Dad hat this week to introduce you to Mookie, a fabulously confident young lady from the Brighton burgeoning music scene who is about to release her third single. Mookie is one of several new acts I regularly see playing around town who are very accomplished even though they are still babies (to me) coming through the music college system. It's a brilliant, inspiring little community, and it makes it a lot easier putting live music nights on when there are so many quality local acts out there earning their performing stripes who want to come and play and who also indulge my old ass when I am singing on the same bill.We had a lovely chat here where I live vicariously by asking all about what it's like going to Waterbear college to learn to be an independent artist.I think you can hear the envy dripping off me. Mookie also does three gorgeous acoustic tunes at the end so stay tuned. Her single 'Murmuring' is out on 21st February 2025, with a fancy video! And she has a fab pre-release gig at The Folklore Rooms in Brighton on Monday 17th.You can find her music on Spotify where she is called MookieCheck her out @mookiesmusic on Instagram for much more infoEnjoyyyyy the episode!Music Dadx-------------------If you enjoy what I do and would like to help support all the time and effort I lovingly put into the world of Stupid Hearts Club, which now includes, podcasts, live music events, music collabs and more, then please consider becoming a paid subcriber to my Patreon! What starts as a beautiful renovation of a basement quickly turns into a chilling mystery as strange sounds, vivid dreams, and eerie experiences unfold. Our listener, who has an intuitive sensitivity to the paranormal, began hearing a man's distressed murmuring coming from the basement after a series of unfortunate floods. But it wasn't just the sounds that left her shaken—it was the dream that followed. A nightmare about a young boy pacing the basement before hanging himself made everything feel too real, especially when physical signs of something having been hung in the basement appeared. #285. Is that thumping in your head a cardiovascular condition or is just our voices pumping through your earbuds? Some of you might be listening to this while shoveling snow, and you probably just decided to take a break. Also, wolf t-shirts and mullets took a break in the mainstream world, but it appears as though they're back. And like Gallagher, we move that conversation on to the grown-out hair mixed with male pattern baldness. After the break we discuss how literally we take the music scenes in musicals before we discuss dying in hills. We need to hear of the hills that you'd die on, but we also need to know whether our mentioned examples are actually unpopular. We end with a nice Christmas recap before we send off to next week! We're Babashook we get to speak to writer / director Jennifer Kent for The Babadook 10th Anniversary and chat all things terrifying, how horror is deeply personal, and everyone's favorite spooky gentleman, Mr. 'dook. More about Jennifer Kent: Jennifer worked extensively as an actor in Australia before establishing her career as a writer/director. THE BABADOOK premiered at Sundance in 2014, and received over 100 nominations and awards internationally. Jennifer's second film THE NIGHTINGALE won the Jury Prize and the Marcello Mastroianni award at Venice Film Festival in 2018, as well as winning five Australian Academy (AACTA) Awards. Recently, she wrote and directed “The Murmuring,” an episode of the acclaimed Netflix anthology GUILLERMO DEL TORO'S CABINET OF CURIOSITIES. She has three feature films in development as well as two TV series. More about The Babadook: Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her ‘out of control' 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called ‘The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behaviour, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of a sinister presence all around her, it slowly dawns on her that the thing Samuel has been warning her about may be real. Today, we're celebrating a special milestone—the 10th anniversary of The Babadook— with director, Jennifer Kent. The Babadook was Jennifer's feature debut and has since become an iconic classic and one of the GOATs of horror.Jennifer has been recognized for her ability to craft horror with heart, making audiences not only tremble but also reflect deeply on the emotional struggles at the core of her stories. Her follow-up film, The Nightingale, is a brutal yet emotionally resonant tale of revenge set in 1820s Tasmania. And Jennifer also wrote and directed The Murmuring for Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities anthology series on Netflix. The episode starred The Walking Dead's Andrew Lincoln and reunited her with Babadook star Essie Davis. The Babadook is back in theaters starting today, through Sunday, September 22nd so be sure to check your local listings and catch it on the big screen! This episode feels like years of film school in 45 minutes as Jen offers a wealth of insights and lessons and I can honestly say, this is my favorite interview I've ever done of the Nick Taylor Horror Show and definitely the most insightful. We dive into Jennifer's journey, from her early career as an actress to transitioning into filmmaking under the mentorship of Lars von Trier as well as her creative process, how she approaches working with actors, and how she brings terrifying visions to life through practical effects, meticulous sets and sound design. We'll also discuss what makes The Babadook so enduring, the power of horror as a storytelling tool and much much more. There are three big topics we did not cover in this interview because Jennifer has spoken at length about them in previous interviews so I will cover these really quickly up front.Number One: The Babadook as a Queer Icon. A Netflix glitch mistakenly categorized The Babadook under the LGBTQ+ genre causing an outpouring of memes parodying the error. But, what began as an online joke morphed into something meaningful for the queer community as powerful metaphors emerged. In The Babadook, the monster symbolizes repressed emotions and trauma and many in the queer community saw parallels between this and the experience of repressing one's identity. The film's message of embracing and living with one's inner "monster" instead of destroying it is also seen as a metaphor for self-acceptance. Furthermore, The Babadook can be seen as a "destroyer of families," which parallels and parodies certain rhetoric about queerness being a threat to traditional family structures and in one scene the Babadook literally emerges from a closet.Number Two, the possibility of a Babadook Sequel: Jennifer has been very clear that there will never ever be a sequel to The Babadook. She made sure to retain the rights to any sequels and said she will never allow one to be made. To her, The Babadook is a film that stands alone, and a sequel would destroy its integrity.Number Three: Did Amelia Write the Babadook book?: This topic has been speculated by fans and even raised on The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. It's revealed that Amelia used to write children's books, so it would make sense that she created the Babadook book as a form of coping with her trauma. Jennifer has said that this was intended but never said outright which allows for multiple interpretations. I personally think she did write the book.Alright, before we get to the interview, I owe a huge thank you to the team at IFC, specifically Danielle Freiberg and Rob Scheer for their support in making this happen. I've wanted to chat with Jen since I started this podcast and this interview was a treat and an honor and I thank you both truly. Without further ado, here is Jennifer Kent, Director of The...

Fir trees don't have what you might call normal leaves. Their leaves are needles. Each tree possesses many needles, too many to count. Especially when the height of these trees ranges from 12 to 23 stories high. Concentrated in these myriad tiny needles, is a wonderful and special power. Position yourself deep within a fir forest, with even the slightest of breezes blowing high above, and you'll feel it. You'll notice it first as a sound in your ears, but that is only where it starts. The softest, the most velvety, the most spatially rich sound imaginable. Without realising it, the sound passes from your ears to become a sigh In your chest and lungs. Further it flows, permeating through your whole body. The more you tune yourself into the sound of the fir trees, the more you still your own motion, the more you detach from the need to think of anything else, the more the waves of relief flow. The sensation is real, a palpable response to the aural awe diffusing down into the spaces beneath the firs. Fir trees we feel create such powerful and yet enchantingly delicate sounds, that since experiencing them high in the hills of Dentdale last summer we knew we had to try to capture more. More fir trees in more different contexts, across more ground. That meant we had ultimately to go to the Kielder Forest, the largest fir plantation in England. This sound capture is from a location in the Kielder Forest called Forest Drive. After reaching the area and then following rough tracks cut through the forest over several miles, we reached a place where a huge section of plantation was visible processing down the valley. Row, after row, after row of tall fir trees. The effect was enchanting, and fixed us to the spot. As we stood looking the wind began to rise in the treetops. The sound came. Velvet brown waves, of physically rejuvenating sound. It took our breaths away. If you are able to find a quiet and still spot to listen to this episode with a pair of good headphones or Airpods with noise cancellation, the Lento microphones have managed to faithfully capture quite a lot of the aural perfection that existed inside this huge forest, on that warm and blowy spring day earlier this year.

Complaining can abort seasons
Murmuring and complaining the children of Israel were known for that as they traversed through the dessert. It was also a problem that threatened to split the early church! And in case you haven't noticed it's still around today, especially on social media! We approach Acts chapter six on this edition of a Daily Walk. It's there we hear of a problem that has developed in this growing church. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1368/29

While sitting in a class at the theological seminary he attended, Michael Huston was floored when he heard his teacher say these words: “Lament is faithfully complaining to God.” The teacher went on to say, “Lament is the way you worship to God from within pain.” Huston describes the feeling he felt that day as exhaling a breath he had been holding for a very long time. On this week's episode, he explains why he hopes to help others find that same relief in the concept of lament. 1:51- What is Lament and Why the Interest?9:26- Structure of Lament12:47- Murmuring or Complaining Vs. Lament15:17- The Necessity of Expressing Pain and Grief18:25- Men Are That They Might Have Joy22:12- Post 9/11—A Modern Example of Lament27:29- The Importance of Allowing Yourself to Lament31:05- Lament—A Sacred Offering37:08- A Note on Lament and “Faith Crisis”39:52- A God For All Seasons42:06- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ? “Lament, in a sense, is the most sacred of offerings. …It's those moments when we are most vulnerable, most exposed, most uncertain, when our legs are the shakiest. We're taking that and we're saying, ‘God this is all I have left.'” —Michael Huston Links & References: Michael's book Elder Maxwell's talk about murmuringSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you have read the Book of Mormon, you are aware that 1st Nephi is full of accounts of Nephi describing the murmuring and complaining that come from his brothers, and sometimes his father and his mother. During my study of these chapters, I had some things I wanted to share about murmuring and how it's keeping us stuck in our lives. Check out this episode to learn more. TODAY: Killer Cop Derek Chauvin gets shanked in prison. Conspiracy theorists say it's because their pro-Chauvin documentary was too good. ALSO: the right wing in Dublin riot after a suspected migrant allegedly slashes several people, including children. We examine the effort to link the attack to asylum seekers en masse, and marvel at the American right wing's newfound love of fiery, destructive protests. FINALLY: an unhinged screed against a “millennial” (zoomer) Tom Hanks-themed Hanksgiving party goes viral as one man rages against the degeneracy of hanging out with women.
