Rafal taught himself design and started freelancing around his schoolwork at age 16. When he moved from Poland to the United States at 18, and with zero contacts and no design qualification, he landed a full-time job as a developer.Rafal progressed within the company, designing for some of the biggest websites and blogs out there, all while continuing with freelance work on the side. Until, eventually, he left the job to focus on his business and his personal brand full time.He formed a small agency with friends later, before leaving because his days were filling up with project management tasks rather than design work. These days, Rafal’s running a one-person design studio (with help from assistants and other specialists) and selling digital products and courses. “It’s not for everyone,” he says. “But don’t quit too soon. Give yourself a chance to see what’s really out there.” This episode of the Being Freelance podcast is supported by Gold Stag Accounts.Plain talking, friendly, freelance accountants. “Be the best boss you ever had,” says Stefano, and he’s trying to live up to that himself. From not letting an employer’s limits hold him back, to re-imagining work-life balance on his own terms, to developing a portfolio that’s not just about winning work, but about showing his journey too; Stefano tries to make his professional development and mental well-being a priority. With an “umbrella of skills” and a professional title that doesn’t tie him to one specific job, Stefano’s able to build deeper, longer-term relationships with clients. He chats to Steve about he got started, how he finds clients, and how he’s worked on his mindset and well-being throughout his freelance career. Mistake #1: Not charging enough for the work they do. Most designers don't value their work or even know how to price projects, so they under charge and way over deliver. Even worse, they keep these working relationships because they don't think they can do any better. And, they keep these clients who nickel and dime them for Every. Little. Thing. (sigh!) This is a cycle that needs to stop now, friend. You can charge top dollar, but you have to create valuable offers with design projects that deliver results. Mistake #2: Creating pretty designs that don't serve a purpose. Being a good designer requires more than being able to work your way around Adobe InDesign. It requires the technical skills, taking ownership in your ability to design brands and designs that get results for your clients. It also requires LISTENING to your clients and providing designs that match your clients ambition. Not just doing something because you're the designer. True Story: My friend is like the Olivia Pope of systems. And a branding agency gave her a logo that looks like SpongeBob Squarepants' house. She was devastated. (Don't worry, I saved the day and re-instilled hope in her that designers rock!) Mistake #3: They get stuck & stay stuck without asking for help. Even when they start to see success, they self-sabotage and feel like they have to be attached to their laptop or all the greatness will go away. Here's the truth: You can leave your laptop closed on weekends and no one will have a meltdown. And if they do, you're working with the wrong clients. Here's another truth: Everyone struggles and has doubts. It's what you do next that will set you up for more success. No matter what you believe, success is possible for you. If you discount the 3 consecutive Saturdays he spent at Waitrose, Tom’s a thoroughbred entrepreneur. He started out knocking on the doors of local businesses at 16 years old, and then went from freelance to founder when he launched Design Cuts - a global marketplace of resources for designers. Tom loves his company, but he’s learnt some hard lessons along the way. He talks openly about his experience of burnout that led to serious illness, and how he’s still dealing with the effects of that today. Lucas says that setting up on his own was like discovering himself again. Learning to know himself, what his goals are, and how he wants to live his life. Right now that means trying to stay balanced in the Brazilian countryside, managing the graphic design work he does for clients alongside building his illustration portfolio. And as for the piece of advice he’d give his younger self, it’s one we haven’t heard before: “Don’t be a bad boss to yourself,” Lucas says. That’s good advice, right? But how many of us can say we follow it?

Jason talks design in branding and packaging design.
Jason talks design with freelancers, and how the shift to freelance and outsourced design changes the industry.
As a designer who's worked almost exclusively for a marketing agency, I've noticed the divide that exists between designers who work freelance and those that work within larger firms. We are so much alike, yet our experiences can vary so widely since there are pros and cons to each path. Even when I started out, the decision was whether to work for an agency – or perhaps internally within a company's own marketing department – or to head out on my own as a freelancer. And it begs the question, which is better, the freelance design life, or designing within an agency? This week, Liz let me nerd out over design things with Joe Barsin, an Annapolitan freelance graphic designer whose work many Maryland locals will recognize under the Citizen Pride brand. He also brought us some awesome stickers, because he's just that cool. With promptings from Liz, Joe and I talked about our own experiences in the agency and freelance worlds, and we discussed how Joe has managed projects as both a freelancer as well as creative director working with freelancers. Check out the podcast below, and definitely check out Joe's design work! What Did We Talk About? Working as a freelancer versus working in an agency: which is better? Do you need a freelancer, or do you need an agency? How do we overcome the stigma against the term "freelance"? What keeps our creativity flowing and inspires us, whether we're freelance or in agencies? How do you manage freelance designers? As a freelancer, how do you collaborate with creative directors?
