S3 E31: A Brewery Isn't a Pub: How Company Competency Shapes Marketing

Be The Push

There is a chasm between market want and corporate can. In this episode we dissect company core competency and the impact misunderstanding this has on marketers. If you've ever felt there is some invisible architecture that dictates success or failure in your organisation, but can't quite put your finger on why, it might be due to a deficit in core competence.Forget chasing trends. We discuss why superficial market appeal is a fool's errand without the intrinsic capability to deliver. From the nuanced dichotomy of breweries and pubs to the audacious (perhaps reckless) expansion of titans like Netflix, we leave no sacred cow alive…..well, almost none.We discuss:The "Adjacent Market Mirage": Listen to the story of an outsourcing company's growth mistake chasing “easy” expansion. The danger for companies lacking self-awareness: Listen to us discuss why a brewery can't be a pub, and why there isn't a damn thing a marketer can do about that. When Good Intentions Lead to Bad Investments (The Software Service Dilemma): Listen to us share a story of how a B2B software company's forays into adjacent services, one a surprising win, the other a costly failure, reveal the often-invisible lines of core competence that must be identified prior to expansion. Why Overestimating Your Capabilities Can Lead to Costly Failures:Listen to us talk about a Branding Agency's expansion problems after it mistook its capabilities and tried to enter the wrong market. The power of knowing your lane: Listen to us discuss how McDonald's deep understanding of what they do allows them to grow year after year, decade after decade.Fuel Strategic Growth by Discovering Your True Core (A Charity's Smart Pivot): Listen to a story how a laundry charity identified their fundamental strength to strategically expand into a different, but related service, substantiating a strong model for growth. This episode was cohosted by:Brand Strategist Jack Ferguson and Product Marketing Specialist Alex Urquhart.Find Jack and Alex online at the links below:Find Jack on LinkedIn hereFind Alex on LinkedIn hereFollow The Push on YouTube hereFollow The Push on LinkedIn hereFollow The Push on TikTok hereFollow The Push on Instagram hereVisit The Push website hereVisit Jack's personal website hereVisit Alex's personal website here

131 | How to Build an Iconic Brand with Neil Barrie

The Business of You with Rachel Gogos

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2024 43:41

What makes a truly iconic brand? Few people are better qualified to answer that question than Neil Barrie, the branding expert behind household names like Pinterest, Peloton, and Airbnb. Neil Barrie founded the TwentyFirstCenturyBrand agency in 2018 and works with many of the world's most innovative brands, including Headspace, Bumble, and Depop. From 2021-2023, the company grew revenue by 70%. Originally a failed rock star, Neil has led the development and growth of top-tier brands including Disney, The Grammys, and Unilever. Throughout his career, he has used his platform to make the advertising industry better and has been featured in publications such as Forbes, Fast Company, and The Guardian. Landing Your First Client How did Neil and his co-founder land Pinterest as their very first client? A lot of it had to do with personal branding and the reputation they'd built for themselves in the industry.  From the beginning, Neil was intentional about doing things for free for influential people, with the expectation they would one day recommend TwentyFirstCenturyBrand. He and his co-founder held workshops for venture capitalists and offered to help them with their portfolios.  It also helped that they had a clear mission for their company (to build influential twenty-first-century brands) and a strong point of view on what made an iconic brand: it had to be purpose-led, community-driven, tech-enabled, and narrative-based.  Neil and his co-founder came out of the gate with a clear thesis. They published white papers on their four-part framework that helped companies see the value in branding. Their strategy paid off–Pinterest took a chance on the new agency and TwentyFirstCenturyBrand's client list has only grown since. Ingredients of an Iconic Brand Branding can be broken down into two sides: input and output. Output is your brand reputation or what other people say about you when you're not around. Input is everything you put into the brand: your vision, your purpose, and the experience you create for your audience. When asked about the future of branding, Neil says there are three factors entrepreneurs need to consider: profit, purpose, and people. After the turmoil of the last few years, profitability is more important than ever. Purpose is your vision and “people” refers to how you rally your community around that vision. To build a truly influential brand, you need to balance all three factors. Enjoy this episode with founder Neil Barrie… Quotes “Most tech companies are leaving money on the table because they mistrust branding.” “It's tough to get business when you're starting out. From the start, community and doing things for free for influential people with the expectation they would recommend us was a big part of our strategy.” “Out of the gate, we acted like we'd been around for 30 years and hoped that sense of confidence and conviction would be infectious.” “Vulnerability is required if you're going to build a proper brand.” “You need to invest the time in figuring out what you stand for, what you are, how you're going to codify that into your experience and so on.” Links mentioned in this episode: TwentyFirstCenturyBrand website: https://twentyfirstcenturybrand.com/  Connect with Neil on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/neil-barrie-29488aa/  A Colourful View From The Top: https://www.amazon.com/Colourful-View-Top-Twenty-One-Extraordinary/dp/1408715791

Today we're joined on the show by Bryan Adams, co-founder and CEO of Ph.Creative, an international employer brand agency. In a wide-ranging discussion, Bryan and I talked about: ☑️ How can organizations attract and retain the most talented candidates - and the best additions to their culture? (The answer may surprise you. The most effective employer brands don't attract candidates; they repel them). ☑️ The importance of creating an emotional connection between your company, your people, and your talent pool. When you get that right, you can turn the entire workforce into advocates and alumni. ☑️ How and why Bryan founded Ph.Creative in the employer branding space. ☑️What Ph.Creative does for employers and how it has grown to become an international business. ☑️ Bryan's advice on how to grow a successful business in the HR sector Thanks, Bryan! "If someone comes to me, and they say, 'Oh, I have a new brand. It's a startup.' First of all, I have to like the person, they have to like me. It's a two way street. And that's the most important thing with anyone in life, not just work. In life, why do we make friends with who we make friends with? They are relationships. And if you connect with someone, magic will happen. If you don't connect with someone, and someone doesn't understand or have the same aesthetic or a similar way of thinking – you have to have something in common with someone. And if you have those qualities, which I look for, honesty and loyalty, and they're genuine, and you just know if you're going to get on with someone or not.”Oberon Sinclair is the CEO and founder of the creative and branding agency, My Young Auntie. We are back for another great interview on our podcast on how to unlock your world of creativity. Our guests today join us on our around-the-world journey where we talk to creative practitioners about how they get inspired and how they organize ideas. And most of all, how they gain the confidence and the connections to launch their work out into the world. Today we have the pleasure to  travel to one of my favorite cities in the world, Stockholm, Sweden, to have a chat with Fredrik and https://www.linkedin.com/in/erik-kockum-710b9829/ (Erik) of the https://snask.com (SNASK) agency SNASK is an internationally renowned creative agency that makes kick-ass branding, design & film. So much so that some of their clients have described them as “Disneyland for graphic designers.” They are a different kind of company they also describe themselves as a creative agency of misfit geniuses conquering the world through fine-looking design and real emotions. Often reminding their clients that they are their client's future romance. A few tips that they share with us that all hold steady to their stellar performance in their industry are: Passion as a creative is very important. Build a team around you that is equally passionate about what they do. It makes it easier for them to show up. They remind us that when people have a creative passion they do not come to work at 10:00 A.M. They get up early and go after it.  We should not be afraid to stand out in the world no matter what our craft is. And it is ok to be bold and colorful even as a  brand agency in a Minimalistic place like Stockholm  Remember to have a balance of both work and fun in order to thrive. In a  professional world built on conservative ideas and frameworks and structures, one look at their website and you will immediately notice that their work is very emotional. It's very provocative. It's very colorful and energetic. Which has made them stand out as an agency over the years which in fact gave them the creative consistency they needed to stand out in the industry. In conclusion, they also give us some insight into, pitching the work and how to convince the client which campaign to go with. Both Erik and https://my.captivate.fm/linkedin.com/in/snask (Fredrik) agree that it's all about taking the client by the hand and leading them through the process. Like you lead someone to the dance floor. You can't just throw a new design in their face without an explanation. You need to take them on a journey on the thought behind the strategy, and how it connects with the brand. And then make sure that this makes a lot of sense to them as much as it does make sense to you as the pitcher. You can find more information about this agency of misfit geniuses on their website https://snask.com (https://snask.com)   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/snasksthlm/ (snasksthlm) Frederik Öst's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/freddiemeup/ (freddiemeup) Erik Kockum's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fessus/ (fessus)   Meet partners in crime - Fredrik Öst and Erik Kockum, Branding Experts with vulnerability and anti-machismo.  First off, let me tell you a little about who Fredrik Öst & Erik Kockum are… "Freddie" was adopted from South Korea and raised in Northern Sweden after being found outside a police station. Erik is a confused and misunderstood misfit genius who believes that the feeling of freedom and allowance of making mistakes is the key to creativity. Fedrick and Erik have co-founded a kick-ass creative agency, combining their expertise in branding, design & film. This of course after being told they needed 10 years of experience in the industry before starting their own agency. They ditched the norms and started uphttps://snask.com/ ( Snask) with zero years of experience 14 years ago!  https://snask.com/ (Snask) is a rare combination of real emotions and playfulness. Of fine lookin' design and...
