In this episode, I sit down with Chris Valadez, President of the Grower Shippers Association, to explore the challenges and strategies shaping the agriculture industry. We dive into how aligning our strengths with our core values can make a big difference, the importance of telling stories that actually connect with people, and the vital role agriculture plays in our everyday lives. Chris offers valuable insights into how the industry can better connect with the public by sharing stories that resonate with their concerns. He notably emphasizes that effective communication in the agriculture industry requires not just telling the story but understanding which aspects will resonate with the public, aligning responses with their concerns, and fostering connections by addressing criticisms thoughtfully rather than defensively. We also reflect on the challenges the agriculture industry faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chris discusses the chaotic response to COVID, particularly in agriculture, highlighting the immense pressure on the industry to continue food production while managing health risks, and I share how even with good intentions to lower costs and offer free services, we felt the financial impact. Despite these challenges, Chris' leadership within the agriculture industry served as an example of the value of human connection. Together, Chris and I delve into the resilience of the industry during the pandemic, the importance of human connection in our work, and explore recent food safety initiatives that are paving the way for the future of agriculture. In this episode, I sit down with Shannon Douglass, the first female President of the California Farm Bureau. Shannon shares insights into her non-traditional farming background and the inclusive, grassroots nature of the Farm Bureau, where policies are driven by local county boards. She outlines her key advocacy focuses, including the farm bill, mill assessment increases, water issues, and the insurance crisis affecting farmers. She explains the ongoing legislative efforts to address insurance challenges and improve availability and affordability through better forest management. During our discussion, we emphasize the disconnect between California's support for local, small farmers and the regulatory environment, emphasizing that these challenges push smaller farms out of business. Shannon also highlights how well-intentioned regulations can have unintended negative consequences, such as the significant investments and logistical adjustments required for switching to electric forklifts. Despite these challenges, her passion for agriculture advocacy is driven by a desire to ensure future generations can continue farming in California. Summary In this conversation, Representative James Talarico and Tim Whitaker discuss topics such as Christian nationalism, faith, and navigating political differences. Talarico shares his background growing up in a conservative Christian home but attending a church that emphasized love for all people. He explains how his faith has informed his political views and motivated him to run for office. The conversation also touches on the importance of maintaining a spiritual foundation in politics, finding common ground with ideological opponents, and the challenges of addressing issues like Christian nationalism. In this conversation, Tim Whitaker and James Talarico discuss the importance of engaging in conversations to advocate for marginalized communities, the need for affordable healthcare and paid family leave, the role of right-wing media in spreading misinformation and fear, the threat of Christian nationalism, and the actions individuals can take to make a difference. Takeaways Growing up in a conservative Christian home, Representative James Talarico attended a church that emphasized love for all people, regardless of race, class, gender, or sexual orientation. Talarico's faith has informed his political views and motivated him to run for office, with a focus on dismantling unjust systems and advocating for the well-being of all constituents. Maintaining a spiritual foundation is crucial in navigating the challenges of politics, helping to control emotions and channel anger into productive and loving actions. Finding common ground with ideological opponents is possible through personal connections and shared values, even while maintaining clear policy differences. Addressing issues like Christian nationalism requires resisting harmful ideas and systems while avoiding personal attacks, focusing on the moral contrast and expanding the circle of concern for all people. Engaging in conversations and advocating for marginalized communities is crucial, as it relieves the burden on those directly affected by discriminatory policies. Affordable healthcare and paid family leave are not radical ideas, but necessary measures to support families and ensure their well-being. Right-wing media plays a significant role in spreading misinformation and fear, often prioritizing profit over truth. Christian nationalism poses a threat to democracy and the values of equality and justice. Individuals can make a difference by staying informed, supporting organizations working for change, and actively participating in the democratic process. NOTES: This week, Dr. Glenn Vo finally got Dylan Brockman—CEO of Brockman Health—to take a break from hooking the Nifty Thrifty community up with affordable healthcare and sit down for another episode of the Nifty Thrifty podcast. Dylan's team consists of experienced agents with an honest, transparent, and educational approach. They're dedicated to providing innovative health and life insurance solutions for self-employed individuals, families, small business owners, and contract workers. One of the big reasons why Dylan wanted to hop onto the podcast was to talk about the window for open enrollment—from November 1st to December 15th—and bring awareness to practice owners about the importance of taking advantage. For those unfamiliar with open enrollment, it's a six-week window when insurance companies open their gates to accept anybody and everybody. That's a big deal because very few companies allow folks to suddenly jump on their plans—and the ones that do allow that will usually require you to have some “special life event” going on. If you miss the open enrollment period, all is not lost—you still have options, and sometimes there are even extensions. That said, the remaining options might come with the risk of overpaying or being left undercovered (Dylan even refers to these as “Swiss cheese” plans because of their holes and gaps).Believe it or not, Dylan's services are “free.” He has contracts with the insurance companies, and that's how he's compensated. There's no nickel-and-diming involved—it's completely free for Dylan's customers to use his services—and he gets the same compensation no matter the company he works with. A free consultation with Dylan just takes a concise, 5-10 minute phone call. In that short amount of time, Dylan can gain a thorough understanding of your budget and specific needs—whether related to therapy, doctor visits, specialists, or specific medications—before presenting you with multiple options to compare, contrast, and figure out what works best for your unique situation. Dylan knows what it's like to be a small business owner. Prior to getting a start in the insurance industry, he was an entrepreneur himself. He ran into the same problems, struggling to find a way to offer health insurance benefits that would fit into his budget. He was stuck between two disparate options. One option was a costly plan that made a lot of sense. The other option was an affordable plan that offered high deductibles, crazy amounts of barriers to entry before getting benefits, and so on. Dylan thinks a big reason so many practice owners run into this problem is that they simply don't know where to find the right programs. He believes that “there are a lot of options out there for you so long as you know where to look.” For the past five years, Dylan has been doing just that—helping people (self-employed people, small business owners, families, etc.)—with finding affordable healthcare. ● Learn about: ○ What's the open enrollment period, and why should practice owners take advantage of it if they're considering offering health insurance for their team? ]○ And more! ● Tune in to watch Glenn go through a screen share presentation where he scrolls through Dylan's website and highlights what he can do for you. There's no harm in at least reaching out; email Dylan at BrockmanHealth@gmail.com or call him at 1-954-243-5893! NIFTY DEAL: ● Free review of current health insurance plan and situation. Consultation will determine if the current health plan is best for their situation or if there are better alternatives.

If you have been sick and have been trying to navigate health insurance to get the MOST out of your health insurance while paying the LEAST, you know that health insurance is a total BEAR.Health insurance can be a TOTAL pain in every regard. It can be a pain to find providers who take your insurance, it's a pain to be told your insurance will cover one amount and later you get charged a totally different (usually much higher) amount. It's a pain that insurance doesn't cover many things that we WANT it to cover, things that will ACTUALLY help you heal. Why is insurance this way? And how can you actually use your health insurance to make it work for you, instead of feeling like you're fighting it all the time? This conversation is NOT about insurance reform, or even politics or voting. This is about, with the system EXACTLY the way it is right now, what can YOU do to still get the healthcare you want or need?To host this conversation, I had a conversation with a special guest that I am SO excited to introduce you to - my father!Dr. Marc Downing is a pediatric surgeon in Southwest Michigan who has been working in healthcare and the hospital system for more than 25 years. He's seen a LOT of shifts in healthcare not only through his career as a physician but also throughout the last 100 years of healthcare that he's studied. Dr. Marc Downing has a deep passion for seeing everyone be able to receive healthcare and to have to turn NO ONE away due to financial problems, but he also sees first-hand a lot of the problems that our current healthcare system creates for individuals and the system itself as someone who both has health insurance and someone who has to deal with it on a daily basis with his patients. Dr. Downing also shares some of his unique wisdom he's gleaned on different ways people approach getting healthcare through his experiences doing international surgery and also with working with communities in the U.S., such as the Amish, who inherently have no access to health insurance. How are people getting healthy in the U.S. and around the world, with or without health insurance, and how can you take your current situation (regardless of your healthcare insurance status) to still get better health outcomes for you and your family? We're tackling all this today, and more. Also, to note: this episode pairs really well with last week's episode with financial expert Katherine Pomerantz where we discuss Katherine's top tips to make your health more affordable. Join us as Hal Frampton, senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, delves into a pivotal legal case in Michigan's Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He's representing Christian Healthcare Centers (CHC) and Sacred Heart Academy as they navigate the expanded civil rights protections in Michigan, which now encompass "gender" and "sexual preference." Both institutions could potentially be compelled to hire individuals who don't align with their religious principles. Established in 2018, the Grand Rapids-based Christian Healthcare Centers offers a unique, direct-pay primary care model that also caters to patients' spiritual well-being. While they serve all patients irrespective of sexual preference and identity, their hiring process requires employees to resonate with their religious beliefs and confirm this with a signed statement. Potentially, CHC could be sued for not hiring someone who does align with its mission. In this episode, Frampton addresses: 1. If there has been no fine or penalty yet against CHC, why is it being sued? 2. The significance of faith in CHC's practice model. 3. The quagmire that can be presented by expanding civil rights protections to include “gender” and “sexual preference.” 4. The potential of this case reaching the U.S. Supreme Court. Today, we're diving into the world of affordable and accessible healthcare benefits for hourly employees. Meet Hooray Health, a game-changer in the industry that aims to bridge the gap between basic healthcare needs and major medical insurance. With their innovative approach and data-driven insights, Hooray Health is revolutionizing the way we think about healthcare. So, let's jump right in and explore their journey! The Birth of a Vision: Shane Foss, the CEO and founder of Hooray Health. They recognized the lack of transparency and affordability in urgent care services and saw an opportunity to make a difference. Inspired by the success of their urgent care model and its similarities to direct primary care, they decided to create a bundled or flat rate system for urgent care visits. Overcoming Challenges and Building a Network: To make his vision a reality, Shane gathered urgent care doctors for a roundtable discussion. By identifying common issues and pain points, they developed a contract that was met with enthusiasm by the doctors. This contract offered a $25 copay with no balance bill, eliminating the dreaded surprise medical bills that plague so many. Building a network of providers in major metro areas was no easy task, but Hooray Health persevered. Within six months, they established contracts with over 50% of urgent cares in the United States, covering 85% of the population within 10 miles of a contracted provider. Talk about accessibility! Scaling Up and Success: After their initial success, Hooray Health expanded nationally within two years. Today, they boast a high retention rate and have not lost a client in four years. Siemens Energy, a client for five years, is a testament to the trust and satisfaction their services provide. Understanding the Limitations: It's important to note that Hooray Health is not major medical insurance. Instead, it serves as a valuable alternative for those who don't have insurance or need additional coverage. While they cover basic healthcare needs, they do have limitations for catastrophic events. However, they can sit underneath a subsidy on the exchange for individuals who weren't offered an employer-sponsored health plan. Innovation and Collaboration for a Better Future: Hooray Health's success story goes beyond providing affordable and accessible healthcare benefits. Spencer and Shane emphasize the need for improved access, transparency, and collaboration between the government and the industry. They believe that by working together, we can address the current issues plaguing the healthcare system and pave the way for a brighter future. Conclusion: Hooray Health's journey is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in the healthcare industry. By focusing on affordability, accessibility, and meaningful benefits, they are filling the gap for hourly employees who deserve quality healthcare without breaking the bank. With their mobile app, provider network, and commitment to doing the right thing for their members, Hooray Health is paving the way for a future where healthcare is truly accessible to all. So, let's raise a cheer for Hooray Health and their mission to revolutionize healthcare! Together, we can build a system that prioritizes the well-being of every individual, regardless of their employment status or income level. Here's to a healthier and happier future for all! He emphasizes the benefits of capitalism in the healthcare industry, highlighting the way his practice provides affordable, quality services, charging a fraction of the traditional hospital costs while remaining profitable. This practice has garnered attention from patients nationwide and beyond. Furthermore, Dr. Smith sheds light on the burgeoning wave of free market alternatives within healthcare, with more medical professionals and institutions adopting this model. He provides insight into his innovative transparent pricing model which disrupts traditional insurance industry norms, with many patients finding his all-inclusive prices financially advantageous.
