We are still in the action of cleaning up our life. We forgive our past and transform our "special relationships" into Holy Ones, through the action of the Holy Spirit. When we "turn them over" to this Divine Care, they can become part of the Real World of Happy Dreams. Happy Dreams are loving. They are free of judgments and grievances, attack thoughts and condemnations, motives and expectations. The in Happy Dream we love our brothers as ourself. We want for others what we want for ourselves. Peace and Joy are increased in us by sharing them. The perfect happiness that is God's Will for us belongs to everyone. We wish that for all. And the prayers we make to invoke this perfect happiness include and raise up our brothers and sisters with us in this ascension. It is a good way to enter Heaven—not alone, but holding hands with those who assure our common Divine Source.

When Samuel Townsend died at his home in Madison County, Alabama, in November 1856, the fifty-two-year-old white planter left behind hundreds of slaves, thousands of acres of rich cotton land, and a net worth of approximately $200,000. In life, Samuel had done little to distinguish himself from other members of the South's elite slaveholding class. But he made a name for himself in death by leaving almost the entirety of his fortune to his five sons, four daughters, and two nieces: all of them his slaves. In Happy Dreams of Liberty: An American Family in Slavery and Freedom (Oxford UP, 2022), R. Isabela Morales reconstructs the migration of this mixed-race family across the American West and South over the second half of the nineteenth century. Searching for communities where they could exercise their newfound freedom and wealth to the fullest, members of the family homesteaded and attended college in Ohio and Kansas; fought for the Union Army in Mississippi; mined for silver in the Colorado Rockies; and, in the case of one son, returned to Alabama to purchase part of the old plantation where he had once been held as a slave. In Morales's telling, the Townsends' story maps a new landscape of opportunity and oppression, where the meanings of race and freedom--as well as opportunities for social and economic mobility--were dictated by highly local circumstances. During the turbulent period between the Civil War and the rise of Jim Crow at the turn of the twentieth century, the Townsends carved out spaces where they were able to benefit from their money and mixed-race ancestry, pass down generational wealth, and realize some of their happy dreams of liberty. Her first book, Happy Dreams of Liberty: An American Family in Slavery and Freedom, was published earlier this year by Oxford University Press. When Alabama plantation owner Samuel Townsend died in 1856, he willed his vast fortune to his children and his nieces. What seems like an ordinary bequest was anything but, since Townsend's children and nieces were his enslaved property. Townsend, who knew the will would be challenged in court, left nothing to chance, hiring the best lawyer he could find to ensure that his legatees received both their freedom and the resources they would need to survive in a country that was often hostile to free African Americans. To learn more about the Townsend Family, I'm joined in this episode by public historian Dr. R. Isabela Morales, the Editor and Project Manager of The Princeton & Slavery Project, and author of Happy Dreams of Liberty: An American Family in Slavery and Freedom. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Hello, when Samuel Townsend died in 1856 near Huntsville, Alabama, he was the era's equivalent of a multimillionaire. He had thousands of acres of cotton-land, and hundreds of enslaved people who planted, harvested, and processed that cotton to make him rich. Like many other parents, he left it all to his five sons, four daughters, and two nieces. But in this case all of them were slaves. And that crucial event is not even the beginning of the intricate, horrible, thrilling, and ennobling story of the Townsend family, which Isabela Morales tells in her new book Happy Dreams of Liberty: An American Family in Slavery and Freedom.  R. Isabela Morales is the Editor and Project Manager of the Princeton & Slavery Project and the Digital Projects Manager at the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum. She received her PhD in history from Princeton University. Happy Dreams of Liberty is published by Oxford University Press. We pray our listeners enjoyed a warm and wonderful Christmas or holiday season. We invited you, in the last few podcasts, to prepare for dreaming in 2022. This episode reviews those invitations and suggests what to do in January to assure your dreams in 2022 come true. Specific actions include: Keep generating possibilities as the year and your dreams progressFocus on 1 or at most 2 at a time and define the scope or desired limitations for eachStart identifying people who already achieved similar dreams or possess expertise you may needBegin acting consistently by researching online or in publications about your dreamMeet with your mastermind group in JanuaryI also share a personal example of a windmill (undesired, false  limitation appearing real) that many listeners may share. "Why should anyone listen to me when they already understand all of this?"  I pray that my experience helps others deal with similar windmills.I also outline that, beginning with the next episode, one or two of the podcasts each month will include guests sharing how they let their dreams work. As dreamworkers we're often faced with helping people deal with the serious dreams that can often literally keep them up at night. Seldom do we focus on those dreams that we find silly or make us laugh or simply put a smile on our faces. That's a mistake as there's as much gold to mine from happy dreams as there is from nightmares or those epic dreams that could fill a book. I discuss how to do this and where it can lead with dreamworker Katherine Bell. During this lively discussion, Katherine tells us:•the wisdom that lies in happy dreams•how to understand what our dreams are telling us•why it's not necessary to “interpret” dreams•what she means by experiential dreamworkIf you need further proof why dreams are worth you'll find that and much much more on this informative episode of Dream Power Radio. Katherine Bell is a dreamwork practitioner and the founder of Experiential Dreamwork. Her life has been deepened and enriched through her personal dreamwork, and she is passionate about helping you become more truly you by tuning into the gifts that your nightly dreams offer.
