Welcome back to Drafting the Past. I'm Kate Carpenter, and this is a podcast about the craft of writing history. In this episode, I'm joined by historian and writer Dr. Surekha Davies. Surekha is a former history professor who now writes full-time, and she can also be found speaking about history and consulting on monsters. In fact, monsters have played a major role in much of her research. Her first award-winning book was titled Renaissance Ethnography and the Invention of the Human: New Worlds, Maps, and Monsters. Her second book, which is aimed at a general audience, is out now; it's called Humans: A Monstrous History. The book looks at, as she puts it, how people “have defined the human in relation to everything from apes to zombies, and how they invented race, gender, and nations along the way.” I spoke with Surekha about how she made the switch to full-time writing, her newsletter, Notes from an Everything Historian, and how she organized what could have been an unruly book. Enjoy my conversation with Dr. Surekha Davies.

She challenged me to produce a novel and gave me an independent study project: Write a novel. At age 17, I did just that! Well, I tried. Now retired, I have rekindled my love of writing stories. In the past few years, I have been fortunate to have found homes for my short stories in almost 20 different anthologies, magazines, journals, and even a podcast! Most of my stories are mysteries and crime fiction, but I have added literary and comedy genres to my repertoire.Gregory Meece - Author (meecetales.com)Christina BoufisChristina Boufis is a San Francisco Bay-Area writer whose short fiction has appeared in Pulphouse Fiction Magazine, Kings River Life Magazine, and the forthcoming anthology, Larceny and Last Chances. In this episode, Dr. Anthony Christian Ocampo takes us both inside and beyond his new book, Brown and Gay in LA: The Lives of Immigrant Sons (NYU Press, 2022), to talk about the craft of writing nonfiction, the importance of writing communities and fellowships, and about putting your writing out into the world. Today's book is: Brown and Gay in LA: The Lives of Immigrant Sons, by Anthony Christian Ocampo. Growing up in the shadow of Hollywood, the gay sons of immigrants featured in Brown and Gay in LA maneuver through family and friendship circles where masculinity dominates, gay sexuality is unspoken, and heterosexuality is strictly enforced. Dr. Ocampo details his story of reconciling his queer Filipino American identity and those of men like him. He shows what it was like to grow up gay in an immigrant family, to be the one gay person in their school and ethnic community, and to be a person of color in predominantly White gay spaces. Brown and Gay in LA is an homage to second-generation gay men and their radical redefinition of what it means to be gay, to be a man, to be a person of color, and, ultimately, what it means to be an American. Our guest is: Dr. Anthony Christian Ocampo, who is Professor of Sociology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He is the author of Brown and Gay in LA, and The Latinos of Asia: How Filipino Americans Break the Rules of Race. He is an Academic Director of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, and co-host of the podcast Professor-ing. His writing has appeared in GQ, Catapult, BuzzFeed, Los Angeles Review of Books, Colorlines, Gravy, Life & Thyme, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. He received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, Jack Jones Literary Arts, Tin House, and the VONA/Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation. He was recently featured in the Netflix documentary “White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch,” as he was one of the employees involved in suing the company for racial discriminatory hiring practices. He holds a BA in comparative studies in race and ethnicity and MA in modern thought and literature from Stanford University, and an MA and PhD in sociology from UCLA. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, who is the producer and host of the Academic Life podcast. She holds a PhD in history, which she uses to explore what stories we tell and what happens to those we never tell. He is the author of Brown and Gay in LA, and The Latinos of Asia: How Filipino Americans Break the Rules of Race. This week, after waxing lyrical about septic tanks, and reading excerpts from a wonderful little MicroBook, Vicky and Joe dive into life and writing lessons learned over the past 11 years. Basically, some of the most important stuff Vicky could've done with knowing before she started. Here it is for you, so you don't have to faff around before you write your book.   Key Takeaways:   [3:40] Always buy books! [4:20] Joe read that some people felt relieved when they threw their books away. How dare they! [7:30] Project Dingle update! [12:20] What does Vicky wish she had learned sooner in her career? [13:40] Just because something was published by a big house doesn't mean it's good, and just because something was self-published doesn't mean it's bad. [14:20] The impact your book makes is more important than how many copies it sells. [17:10] Vicky loves that her book has brought in quality customers that she wants to work with. [17:40] Remember, the rules are all made up. You can break them! [19:20] Don't mislead the reader by turning your book into one big sales letter. Deliver value. [21:20] Really write a book that respects the reader. They are taking the time to read it. [21:40] Want to write a microbook? Vicky's got another workshop happening in March! [21:55] You do not need six months + isolation time to write a book. [24:10] Don't hang onto the outcome. Vicky explains why this was the most important thing she learned. [26:20] Not everything you create will turn to gold. It's okay to let it go and call it crap.   Mentioned in This Episode: Website Book Breakthrough Jam Podcast Subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher, and Overcast Email Vicky about 1:1 coaching at: vicky@moxiebooks.co.uk Microbook Magic Leviathan Wakes by James S. The pandemic, which began in 2020, has had a huge economic impact on the world at large, with many people affected by unemployment, pay cuts, reduced household income, as well as other sources of stress. Since an increasing number of people have begun looking for a part-time job outside their full-time career, we have entered the era of ‘side hustlers' who take on multiple additional jobs. Writing as a side job is particularly attractive because it doesn't require much to get started and can produce a desirable pay-off for the time invested. Even if it's not taken up as a side job, writing is still a basic skill for the average worker. Excellent writing skills can be a selling point in our resumes, and can even make us stand out from the competition. There's a passage in the best-selling book Rework that we've unlocked in one of our bookeys: "If you are trying to decide among a few people to fill a position, hire the best writer. It doesn't matter if that person is a marketer, salesperson, designer, programmer, or whatever; their writing skills will pay off." Therefore, writing is an important skill, and improving them is sure to be rewarded handsomely.

Nonfiction writing is also called “narrative journalism.” With a history of less than 100 years, it emerged between the 1950s and 1960s and was heavily influenced by the development of the Pulitzer Prize. In 2001, the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University established the “Nieman Program on Narrative Journalism.” They collected the scripts from 51 writers’ speeches to create the book Telling True Stories: A Nonfiction Writers’ Guide from the Nieman Foundation at Harvard University, which will introduce us to nonfiction writing.
