Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Friday, Oct. 27   West Virginia is ranked one of the top states for retirement. Appalachian Bee Collective transforms the landscape of former mining communities. And Northrop Grumman's new missile integration facility takes WV to new heights…on today's daily304. #1 – From MSN – West Virginia, adorned with Appalachian beauty and a cost of living that's music to the ears of those on a fixed income, has been ranked as the most affordable state to retire by Bankrate's “Best and Worst States to Retire” list. West Virginia's compelling blend of affordability and amenity makes it a magnet for those seeking a tranquil and cost-effective retirement. The state's relatively light tax burden, low cost of living, and tax-friendly policies towards retirees contribute to its top ranking for affordability. But it's not just about the money. West Virginia also ranked third best overall for retirement, scoring high in wellbeing, weather and crime categories. This signifies that it's not just an economical choice but also a place where retirees can enjoy a high quality of life. Read more: https://www.msn.com/en-xl/news/other/west-virginia-emerges-as-the-most-affordable-state-for-retirement-in-2023/ar-AA1ihJ8n   #2 – From DAILY YONDER –  Dakota Lukach and Jazzlee Molineaux work together in their bee yard, about a 45-minute drive from Bluefield. The couple never expected to become beekeepers but are now two of the 100 beekeeper partners in the Appalachian Bee Collective. The Appalachian Beehive Collective began with a two-fold mission: to provide a sustainable income for coal-dependent West Virginia counties and to educate those same counties about the importance of pollinators.   Eligibility for partnership begins with a five-week beekeeping course where students learn the art and science of beekeeping. Prospective beekeepers then apply to become partners with the collective.  Once accepted into the collective, these “newbies” receive the hive hardware and a nucleus of bees for each hive. They also receive protective clothing, hive tools, smokers, new bees' nutrition and disease and parasite control medication. ABC takes care of all expenses as well as continual mentoring and advice. Mentor and head beekeeper Mark Lilly recounts many success stories from the program. Beekeeping has allowed some participants to quit their part-time jobs and work from home, he said.

Alabama Short Stories

Alabama is lucky to have its share of astronauts who were born in Alabama or while working with NASA, lived here for a time, specifically in Huntsville. There is a chance you could run into an astronaut in Alabama. It's a slim chance but still a possibility. If you grew up in the '70s and made the annual pilgrimage to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, you have a really good chance to meet Mrs. Baker. She made her trip into space before the Mercury astronauts and lived out her life at the center. You will hear her story on this episode of Alabama Short Stories.Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/shawnwrightAL)

One of the great things about the domestic travel series is having the opportunity to learn more about these different cities. Huntsville, Alabama has long been known for the US Space and Rocket Center and for Space Camp. Those two attractions are well worth the trip on their own. But if you take a deeper look, there is so much more to this international city.  Kristen Pepper and Beth Ridgeway from the Madison County Convention and Visitors Bureau give us the inside information on “Rocket City”. Make sure and listen to the podcast to hear about their Trip Advisor Traveler's Choice award winners for 2020.  In the age of COVID, Huntsville has some exceptional outdoor spaces that allow you to enjoy food and music and still keep that social distancing in place. The town also offers a vibrant and historic downtown area that you'll definitely want to check out.  The US Space and Rocket Center is a pretty amazing attraction. Kristen also pointed out that Huntsville is not a museum dedicated to past space projects, Huntsville is front and center on the mission to get to Mars.  Big thank you to Kristen and Beth for coming on the show. Make sure and give it a listen!

We’ve already talked about Where to Stay in Nashville, but what are you going to do while you are there? You probably know Nashville is famous for country music and nightlife, but there is more to Nashville than that. Downtown Nashville is often called Nashvegas because of all of the amazing bars, restaurants, and venues. We suggest fun ideas whether you are into shopping, sports, or dancing.  We break down some of the more famous night spots and honky tonks in the area. It’s even possible to have a sighting of a favorite artist or two while you are out. Some of these places are even owned by stars like Luke Bryan, John Rich, Kid Rock and more. We also talk about local attractions other than bars and some really fun family ideas that are two hours or less away. If you are planning a Nashville trip, we have tons of fun ideas and suggestions for you to explore. Show Notes: [04:48] Nashvegas or downtown. Nashville hosted the 2019 NFL draft and showcased everything that Nashville has to offer.   [05:18] Lower Broadway or 2nd and Broadway is known for the Honky Tonks.  [05:46] Honky Tonks usually have country music and some type of line dancing. It's typically people dressed in western gear but they don't have to be.  [07:21] There are a lot of blocks in this four block area.  [07:36] Some iconic bars include Tootsies, The Stage, Legends, and Roberts. These are the Honky Tonks right behind the Ryman which was originally the Grand Ole Opry. After shows, people like Johnny Cash would head out and have a drink at these places. [08:35] There's all kinds of great local talent, plus you never know who you'll see there. [09:11] There are also bars created by big stars like Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Kid Rock. There's the Redneck Riviera bar which isn't far away from Mount Richmore where Jon Rich lives.  [10:54] There are also some great places to dance in Lower Broadway like Acme Feed & Seed, Bourbon Street Blues, and Skulls Rainbow Room. [11:15]  Wildhorse Saloon line dance has line dance lessons. They also have other dancing and great fun times. [12:03] Nashville is a great place to see your team. Nissan Stadium where the Titans play their home games is right downtown. [13:12] The Country Music Hall of Fame is also in this area. As well as, the Nashville Convention Center and Johnny Cash Museum. [14:15] There's a lot of great shops. You can get boots, souvenirs, and music. Local boutiques include Nash collection and southernaire Market. [14:49] We like to drive around and look for the Elvis Statue. [15:57] Get around in style in a Nashville Pedal Pub. We recommend the motorized ones. [18:06] You can also get pulled around by a tractor that pulls a flatbed. It's like a hay ride, but there are seats and a bartender. [20:06] There are all kinds of rolling parties like buses without tops. They also have golf cart taxis that help you bar hop safely.  [22:59] There are also many great tours in and around Nashville. The Ryman hosts concerts and events, and you can get a tour.  [23:43] The Centennial Park Parthenon is another great sight.  [24:29] The current Grand Ole Opry is near the Opryland Hotel and the Opry Mills Mall. [25:54] You could also have a dinner cruise on the General Jackson Showboat. [26:39] If you don't mind going a little further away, you could go on the Jack Daniel's Distillery tour. [27:58] Arrington Vineyards has their own wine. It's a beautiful place. Kicks Brooks is one of the owners.  [29:16] We also have Old Hickory Lake. You can rent boats and find your own private sand bar to hang out on. [31:37] Mammoth Cave National Park has bike trails and Cave tours. [32:21] Land Between the Lakes is the largest stretch of untouched forest on the East Coast. [33:31] If you go two hours south to Huntsville Alabama, there is a fantastic Space and Rocket Center. [34:33] Eat at Rosie's Cantina when you are in Huntsville. [35:59] Rock Island State Park is actually on our list of places to go. It looks gorgeous. [37:15] If you head towards Memphis, you will find the Pinson Mounds. These are Native American burial and ceremonial mounds. There's also an archaeological park there.   Links and Resources: StitchFix Get $25 off your first fix Lyft  get up to $5 off with your first ride Where to Stay in Nashville Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge Robert’s Western World The Stage on Broadway Legends Corner Bar Ryman FGL House Jason Aldean’s Kitchen + Rooftop Bar Luke’s 32 Bridge Kid Rock’s Honky Tonk & Steakhouse Redneck Riviera Bar Mount Richmore Love Circle Bourbon Street Blues Acme Feed & Seed Skull’s Rainbow Room Wildhorse Saloon Nissan Stadium Bridgestone Arena Country Music Hall of Fame  Nashville Convention Center Johnny Cash Museum NASH Collection Southernaire Market Centennial Park Parthenon Grand Ole Opry Opryland Hotel Opry Mills Mall General Jackson Showboat Jack Daniel's Distillery Tour Group Trip on the Bourbon Trail Arrington Vineyards Old Hickory Lake Mammoth Cave National Park Land Between the Lakes U.S. Space & Rocket Center Rosie’s Cantina Rock Island State Park Pinson Mounds For pictures, tips and more, be sure to check out our Fly with Chris and Di Facebook page and signup to download a copy of The Best City for You. We look at the celebrations around the world and how Apollo 11's moon landing changed space flight forever.A moonstruck United States celebrated the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11's "giant leap" by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin at parties, races, ball games and concerts todayAt NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Aldrin showed Vice President Mike Pence the launch pad where he flew to the moon in 1969. At the same time halfway around the world, an American and two other astronauts blasted into space on a Russian rocket. And in Armstrong's hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio, nearly 2,000 runners competed in "Run to the Moon" races."Apollo 11 is the only event in the 20th century that stands a chance of being widely remembered in the 30th century," the vice president said.Neil Armstrong's historic first steps on the moon, 50 years ago today. RUN In this episode, we talk about training challenges and how to overcome them.  Then we ask for your feedback and how you overcome training challenges because in this training week, Dana is coming back from injury and starting back to training slowly.  At the same time, Aimee had a long run distance of 14 miles in the heat and humidity of the Florida summer, which presents its own challenges that we all encounter and need to overcome at some point in a training cycle. EAT My cameraman had a work trip to Huntsville a couple of weeks ago.  We spent some time around some amazing exhibits at the US Space and Rocket Center.   We stayed near the Von Braun Center and Big Spring International Park, which was a great park to run in right outside our hotel.  Huntsville has their own Craft Beer Trail that incorporates the fantastic breweries and tap houses we had the opportunity to visit. We flash back to our visit to Below the Radar Brewhouse, where we had some tasty brews and some out of this world Fish and Chips for lunch when we visited the Brewhouse. I actually thought the fish and chips were the stars of our visit.   Flaky white fish perfectly cooked and battered in beer batter that was crunchy, a little salty, and perfect with a hit of malt vinegar.  It is on the heavier side as an entree, so we would recommend it as a dinner item or to split it if you are having it for lunch, but it is delicious no matter what the time of day. DRINK We had a flight of six original beers while we had the meal and actually saw the brewing process in action while we ate.   The beers I had were: Imperial Brown (Brown Ale) 8% ABV Baltic Porter By Robo, Andrew, Alex, and Clint 7.6% ABV Mild Thang (English Mild Ale) 3.5% ABV Strange Wilderness (American Imperial Stout) 9.2% ABV Voodoo Mary Belgian Dubbel 8% ABV Mossy Oats Stout (Oatmeal Stout) 7% ABV THAT’S A WRAP Want to reach us with a tip, trick, or recommendations?  Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. We tried these original brews: Leila Lager 5.5% STS Rye Saison 5.5% Key Lime Gose 5.5% Andromeda Stout 7% White Star Wheat 5% Pub Ale 4.75%  Dark Skies 8%  Blueberry Milkshake 4.75% One of my favorites was the Key Lime Gose!  They were all flavorful and worth the trip! In this Quick Bite, we recap Green Bus Brewing.  We did a live broadcast from there.  We had flights of their tasty original beers, but did you know that they also make meads, ciders, and their own beer cheese with two of their own brews?   We tried these in flights: Tiramisu Milk Stout Twickenham London Porter Dominant Red Camper Van Blonde Downtown Julie Brown Their beer cheese is made with their Big Spring IPA and Camper Van Blonde.  It was sharp, cheesy, and tangy from the beer. A must when visiting!   Their meads,  Spiced Orange at 16% and Earl Grey at 14%, pack a PUNCH! But they are tasty, too! Their tap room is so cool too.  Such nice and knowledgeable people are behind the bar.  Wood floors on two different levels, the brewing setup is upstairs and it is also extra seating or what could be a great place to have meetings.  They have the front of a VW Bus over their bar on the first floor and walls that incorporate some beautiful brick. EAT Who knew that Huntsville had so many great places to eat!  We continue our look at nostalgic places in Huntsville with Pints and Pixels.  This place was a throwback to the 1980s, and we loved its theme so much because it took us back to when we were kids because both of us loved pinball and video arcades!  But, their kitchen, owned by Anaheim Chili, nails some pretty incredible and spicy food.  From appetizers like Chicharrones with Pimento Cheese, Texas Spring Rolls,  and Adobo Skirt Steak Skewers to bowls of Pesole and Home-Style Chili plus so many others we did not try.  This place knows how to spice things up! DRINK  Pints and Pixels also had awesome local brews on tap, as well as top shelf liquor, but what we had to try was their inventive cocktails.  Why?  They are inspired by and named after some of our favorite video games that we played while growing up.  Ms. Pac-Man Power Pellet was my favorite!  But they also had a Gin and Sonic, The Frogger, Princess Peach Cosmo, Mario’s Power Up, and Luigi’s Liquid Green.  Such a creative menu!  THAT’S A WRAP Thank you for listening! RUN My cameraman had a work trip to Huntsville this week.  We spent some time around some amazing exhibits at the US Space and Rocket Center.   We stayed near the Von Braun Center and Big Spring International Park, which was a great park to run in right outside our hotel.  When we travel for work or during a training week, it is important to find a nice and safe place to get training done.  I hate the treadmill, but sometimes that is the only option.  Not this time.  This park was paved almost 1-mile loop around a beautiful spring-fed pond with huge koi and ducks.  A great place to do speed-work and long runs, if you don’t mind doing loops.  The weather was great and not humid at this time of year, either.     EAT Who knew that Huntsville had so many great places to eat!  We will focus on one of our favorite places to go while we were there, but there are so many places we want to share.  Stay tuned to upcoming quick bites and our next episode because we couldn’t cover it all in one show!   Toy Box Bistro is a bit of our childhood.  Servers Debbie and Spider, as well as co-owner, Bill, could not have been nicer.  The walls and ceiling were covered in memorabilia ranging from TIE Fighters and the Millennium Falcon to Hell Boy, Aliens, and Transformers still in their Japanese packaging.  The food is original, flavorful, and just plain PHENOMENAL.  The gravy on the pot roast sandwich is like a deep, rich demi glace that I could drink.  The warm sour cream potato salad is also a highlight on the menu.  They also have waffles made out of macaroni and cheese and a bacon burger for you spice-heads out there that is dynamite. (It is actually VERY spicy).  We went back for their Star Wars “May the Fourth Be With You” menu on Saturday.  It was their food with a great theme of course.   Sugar Belle is right next door to Toy Box Bistro and their cupcakes are the perfect ending to a great meal.  Salted Caramel Buttercream with a soft chocolate cupcake and a strawberry version that is mouthwatering.  Plus, they have several vintage video game consoles hooked up to tube TVs including an older floor television in a wood cabinet with an Atari 2600 hooked up to it!  I played Frogger and felt for a moment that I was reliving a part of my childhood.  I was a carefree kid again.  Maybe that is why we went back twice.   DRINK Straight to Ale Brewing is a local brewery that we visited, and their beer is available at so many local establishments, including other breweries like Under the Radar (which we will tell you about on an upcoming episode), Pints and Pixels, a grown-up arcade with great food that features classic 80s and 90s arcade games (which we’ll also talk about in an upcoming episode), and even our hotel bar at the AC Marriott. Straight to Ale is a larger local brewery with its own kitchen (Ale’s Kitchen) that is making some amazing beers to drink on premises and for local distribution.  It’s part of a larger entertainment complex called Campus 805, which is an old Middle School that has been converted into a combination of breweries, restaurants, coffee shop, an art studio, an AXE THROWING venue, and even a “secret” speakeasy behind a hidden door!  Sounds cool, right?  Well, that’s because it is.  We’ll have more on all that…you guessed it, on an upcoming episode.   THAT’S A WRAP Thank you for listening! Space Camp Hall of Fame

Ed Buckbee was inducted into the Space Camp Hall of Fame at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in 2007 some 30 years after he and Dr. von Braun first discussed the idea of Space Camp. The two wanted to inspire children to pursue careers in the fields of engineering, math, and science. So 5 years later in 1982, Space Camp opened its doors and welcomed 700 students. Since that time Space Camp has caught the world’s attention, inspiring a Hollywood movie entitled, of course, Space Camp and landing Ed Buckbee on shows such as Late Night with David Letterman. Despite the media fame that Space Camp received, the original desire to inspire children to become interested in math and science, the desire that Ed Buckbee and Dr. Wernher von Braun had in 1977, continues today.

Dr. James Rice was inducted into the Space Camp Hall of Fame at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in 2007. Dr. Rice began his career in space exploration as a Space Camp counselor in 1985. He went on to land an internship where he had the chance to help select the landing site for the first robot to Mars. While at Arizona State University, Dr. Rice helped to develop the robots Spirit and Opportunity which have been exploring the surface of Mars for several years. His next project will be developing a robot that will look for previous life on the surface of Mars.

Space Camp Hall of Fame

Dan Oates was inducted into the Space Camp Hall of Fame at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in 2007. Dan has worked at Space Camp for 18 years exclusively with visually impaired children. He is the founder of SciVis (Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students) which gives blind students, who are unable to see the world around them, the chance to launch the Space Shuttle and land it safely. He has helped bring new technology such as brail panels in the simulators and moveable monitors to Space Camp in order to help these children. Dan brings joy and confidence to these children each year as he provides them with a once in a lifetime experience. The Space Camp Hall of Fame was designed to honor graduates, former employees and supporters who have distinguished themselves in their respective careers or made considerable in-kind contributions in an effort to help further the goals of the Space Camp program.
