He outproduced NASA. Seven cameras to their four at the Huntsville Space and Rocket Center. And at the end of the year, he sat down and told me he didn't think he grew. This conversation with Billy Dunn from Albertville Innovation Academy is one of the most honest things we've put on this podcast. Billy came from Fox 6 in Birmingham — gold standard broadcast — walked into a classroom, and is now three years in, running five jumbotrons across five sports, building a state-level AV teacher conference from scratch, and wondering if he's doing it right. The answer might surprise you.In this episode:- Why imposter syndrome in year three looks nothing like year one — and why that matters- What happened when Billy got a football jumbotron at 2pm for a 7pm game- How a student went from "how long does this have to be?" to defending a one-second strobe effect as her creative call- The Alabama AV Teachers Boot Camp — born from one honest admission: "I don't know what I'm doing. Let's have a conference."- Why Billy stopped asking when to teach frame rates — and what he's teaching instead- The HERC project and how covering a NASA moon buggy competition gave his students a real beat to workIf you're a few years into AV teaching and you're winning things while still feeling like you're losing, this one's for you.Teaching to the Test Pattern is a StreamSemester.com production. On America at Night with McGraw Milhaven, Captain Barry “Butch” Wilmore, retired NASA astronaut and decorated U.S. Navy test pilot. Wilmore reflected on his widely followed nine-month stay in space during the Boeing Starliner saga, explaining how his faith and spirituality helped keep him positive and grounded during the unexpected mission extension. While in orbit, Wilmore even began writing a book titled “Stuck in Space.” Next, Ed Stewart, Curator and Director of Exhibits at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, explained the long technological and historical path that led to Artemis II, the mission that will send astronauts around the Moon for the first time since the Apollo era. Then Tyler Lindholm, Wyoming Director for Americans for Prosperity, discussed why some are calling Wyoming the frontier of America's new Gilded Age, as wealthy individuals and businesses increasingly move into the state. Finally, Robert Madden, archaeologist at Colorado State University, shared research suggesting the world's earliest gamblers may have been Ice Age women, offering a fascinating look at how ancient artifacts reveal early human behavior and risk-taking. Huntsville muralist Jessie Andrews returns to Beyond Rockets with a four-year update that's hard to miss—literally. From her chandelier in “Chandelier Alley” behind 106 Jefferson, to Good Fortune at MidCity, to multiple pieces at The Orion Amphitheater, Jessie breaks down the making of Huntsville's largest mural at Stella: a 2.5-year journey with five months on the lift, winter pauses, and a toolkit that ranges from squiggle grids and projectors to mixed reality with Meta Quest. We get into creative control vs. client vision, timelines, budgets, and why signing your work matters. Jessie also shares practical advice for aspiring muralists—how to get that first wall, when to take smaller budgets for portfolio wins, and the “next best step” mindset that keeps her moving. Plus, a peek at what's next, including new work for Mellow Mushroom and the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. If you've snapped photos of Huntsville's murals, there's a good chance you've already met Jessie's work.https://www.instagram.com/honeyblood.muralco/SponsorYellowhammer is a local craft brewery serving Huntsville for the past 14 years. An unexpected journey from Hong Kong to Texas formed the backbone of Adam Coleman's story as he recounts how discovering airbrush stencils abroad eventually led him to become the North American distributor for Liang Models. What began with worn-out stencils and an email inquiry transformed into a passionate business venture connecting Chinese manufacturing innovation with the American modeling community.Coleman walks us through the fascinating evolution of Liang, founded in 2019 by architect and senior modeling judge Yusheng Liang. Their product line has expanded to approximately 90 items across three core categories: vinyl airbrush stencils, specialized modeling tools, and diorama accessories. The Zimmerit tools rank as their bestsellers, but newer innovations like the centered hole driller and handle bender showcase the thoughtful engineering behind each product. What distinguishes Liang from competitors is their commitment to education. Each product features a QR code linking to instructional videos, making complex techniques accessible to modelers of all skill levels. Coleman's distribution philosophy prioritizes geographic exclusivity for brick-and-mortar retailers while supporting online vendors in different regions, creating a collaborative rather than competitive marketplace. The episode then pivots to an exciting preview of the 48th annual Huntsville Plastic Model Society show scheduled for August 23rd. Tom Clark details how this well-established event has evolved to embrace emerging trends like Gundam modeling with expanded categories. With 62 vendor tables already sold out, food trucks (including milkshakes!), and proximity to the famous Space and Rocket Center, the show delivers a complete modeling experience for attendees.Whether you're interested in discovering innovative new modeling tools or planning to attend what promises to be an outstanding show in Alabama, this episode provides valuable insights into the ever-evolving world of scale modeling. They also discuss Britt's distortion of a sex-trafficking case to criticize President Joe Biden on the border. Our guest this week is Marilyn Lands, the Democratic candidate in House District 10. They discuss her campaign, the Alabama Legislature, and the attacks targeting a transgender woman employed at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center's Space Camp. They close with a discussion of former state Rep. John Rogers' guilty plea in a kickback scheme involving former Rep. Fred Plump, and this week's Rightwing Nut(s) of the Week. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Oct. 27 West Virginia is ranked one of the top states for retirement. Appalachian Bee Collective transforms the landscape of former mining communities. And Northrop Grumman's new missile integration facility takes WV to new heights…on today's daily304. #1 – From MSN – West Virginia, adorned with Appalachian beauty and a cost of living that's music to the ears of those on a fixed income, has been ranked as the most affordable state to retire by Bankrate's “Best and Worst States to Retire” list. West Virginia's compelling blend of affordability and amenity makes it a magnet for those seeking a tranquil and cost-effective retirement. The state's relatively light tax burden, low cost of living, and tax-friendly policies towards retirees contribute to its top ranking for affordability. But it's not just about the money. West Virginia also ranked third best overall for retirement, scoring high in wellbeing, weather and crime categories. This signifies that it's not just an economical choice but also a place where retirees can enjoy a high quality of life. Read more: https://www.msn.com/en-xl/news/other/west-virginia-emerges-as-the-most-affordable-state-for-retirement-in-2023/ar-AA1ihJ8n #2 – From DAILY YONDER – Dakota Lukach and Jazzlee Molineaux work together in their bee yard, about a 45-minute drive from Bluefield. The couple never expected to become beekeepers but are now two of the 100 beekeeper partners in the Appalachian Bee Collective. The Appalachian Beehive Collective began with a two-fold mission: to provide a sustainable income for coal-dependent West Virginia counties and to educate those same counties about the importance of pollinators. Eligibility for partnership begins with a five-week beekeeping course where students learn the art and science of beekeeping. Prospective beekeepers then apply to become partners with the collective. Once accepted into the collective, these “newbies” receive the hive hardware and a nucleus of bees for each hive. They also receive protective clothing, hive tools, smokers, new bees' nutrition and disease and parasite control medication. ABC takes care of all expenses as well as continual mentoring and advice. Mentor and head beekeeper Mark Lilly recounts many success stories from the program. Beekeeping has allowed some participants to quit their part-time jobs and work from home, he said.
