Gerry Bryant is a brilliant classically-trained pianist, composer, and arranger. He came from a poor inner-city Cleveland neighbourhood, and was givin an opportunity to attend the prestigious Phillips Academy, then Harvard university. He went on to get an MBA and a law degree, all the while continuing the expansion of his knowledge of different styles of music, and forming his jazz group Pocketwatch. This episode partly focuses on his Composers album, with music of Florence Price and Thomas Wiggins who was known as Blind Tom to his slave masters. Gerry reflects on how access to a musical education changed his life, and how wonderful it has been to discover and champion Black composers. Long-promised, partly written, and much desired, the complete guide to fae magic and the globetrotting metaplot adventures lingered in the dreams of 2e players even after the old World of Darkness had been detonated. Presumably some of the material made it into the 20th anniversary edition; the signs remain unclear. In this week's episode, we break down the film The Whale. The film is directed by Darren Aronofsky, written by Samuel D. Hunter, and stars Brendan Fraser. The film is an emotional rollercoaster and leaves all of us feeling something. At the movie's core, we tried to determine whether this was a tragedy or a comedy. The result will vary for everyone but somewhere in the middle, leaving you conflicted. We spent a good time working on what the core theme of the film was, and we came to the conclusion it was gravitating toward honesty. The film calls for the characters to be honest with themselves and those closest to them. If you can do that from the heart, your life starts to fit together. As a call to action, I know that all of us have something left unsaid to someone important to us, so at the very least, saying something from the heart to someone who matters to you can be a gateway towards something better. We had the pleasure of interviewing ustin Kawika Young over Zoom video!Justin Kawika Young, the singer songwriter who has honed his sublime skills as a member of Colbie Caillat's band and as a co-founder of their hit collective Gone West, has struck out on his own and is sharing a new song—the effortlessly melodic “Back To The Blue.” One of the most uplifting songs in his repertoire, Young weaves past experience and newfound wisdom with heady ocean metaphors that vividly illustrate his post break up state of mind. Produced and performed by Young, the song, which is the title track from his recently released solo album. ABOUT JUSTIN KAWIKA YOUNGBorn and raised in Hawai'i, Justin Kawika Young first found success in his island home. He accumulated eleven number-one hits on Hawai'i radio before relocating to Los Angeles. He quickly established a following in the local music scene there and connected with other singer/songwriters including ‪Colbie Caillat, eventually joining her band. Young toured with Caillat as her acoustic guitarist/background vocalist and co-wrote two songs on Caillat's All Of You album. In 2019 Justin and Caillat formed a band in Nashville with two friends called Gone West. Dock Ellis: One of baseball's most feared pitchers of the 1970s & the ace of the staff of the 1971 World Series Champion Pittsburgh Pirates, Dock Ellis was a character who did things his way. From throwing a no-hitter on LSD to trying to hit every batter in the rival Cincinnati Reds' lineup, Dock could never outrun his substance abuse demons during his baseball career. His post-career work counseling players and people going through addiction issues should be commended, but we are all left wondering "What Could Have Been?" regarding Dock's potential on the pitching mound.
