403. Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour with Kim Thayil and Mike Squires: Lollapalooza — The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock's Wildest Festival

These days, large-scale high-production music festivals take over major cities and regularly attract crowds of every genre — including the current version of Lollapalooza that draws a casual 400,000 people to its resident Chicago stomping grounds. But kick it back a few decades and this kind of maximalist mega-show wasn't quite the norm it is now, especially for musical tastes outside of the mainstream. In their second collaborative book, Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock's Wildest Festival, music journalists Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour flash back to when the Lollapalooza we know now was a new tour concept bringing 1990s alternative artists and ideas center stage. Lollapalooza first transports readers back to the festival's origins – a 20+ city summer sprawl highlighting alternative music, art, and counterculture, conceived by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction. From 1991-1997, this breakthrough tour shifted the scope of live music experiences and helped forge a new path for the decade's subcultures to reach the masses and the media. Bienstock and Beaujour have compiled hundreds of new interviews to dig into the dirt of how the historic festival came into being at every level – from headlining artists and record label execs to tour organizers and promoters to freakshow performers, stage crews, and roadies. Lollapalooza is packed with gritty details of an era of shows that defied genres and drew crowds across style lines. Music, art, and politics drawing from alt-rock, goth, industrial, metal, punk, hip-hop, EDM, and avant-garde explorations – all coming together under one big tent. Featuring original interviews with iconic artists like Green Day, Patti Smith, Rage Against the Machine, Ice-T, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Metallica, and many more, this collection amplifies voices that helped shape generations of contemporary thinkers, creative activists, and live music audiences. Journeying through 90s nostalgia, uncensored first-hand accounts, and the long-term reverberations of a groundbreaking tour, Bienstock and Beaujour document a high-impact chapter of modern American music. A VIP pass to the action onstage and backstage, on the road and behind the scenes – Lollapalooza details the cultural shift of the alternative rock revolution and the echoes still heard through concert crowds today. Richard Bienstock is a journalist, musician, and author whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. He is the executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine and former senior editor of Guitar World and has authored and co-authored books including Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Slash: An Intimate Portrait.  Tom Beaujour is a journalist, music producer, and engineer who has been featured in television shows like Orange is the New Black, A Handmaid's Tale, and Criminal Minds. He is a co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Revolver and has contributed to Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Blender, and Billboard. He is the co-author of Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion, alongside Richard Bienstock. Mike Squires is a Seattle-based touring musician and the host of Couch Riffs Podcast since 2019. The writer-producer Jenji Kohan has given us some of the best depictions of women on television. Nancy Botwin of Weeds followed a Breaking Bad-like path from suburban widow to druglord. The diverse cast of Orange Is the New Black revolutionized TV with not one, but dozens, of empathetic, flawed, fascinating characters. And GLOW, which followed a scrappy women's wrestling operation, gave us a women's sports show unlike any other. The essay collection The Women of Jenji Kohan, edited by Scarlett Harris, captures all of the complexity of Kohan's work, with both admiration and warranted criticism. In this episode, we speak to two of the collection's contributors: Dani Bethea, who wrote about Orange Is the New Black's depictions of violence against Black women; and Sydney Urbanek, who wrote about Nancy Botwin's inability to be “cured” of her demons on Weeds. Homefolks, we came to party, and your eyes were looking at ... Nöthin' but a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion by Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock and it is well and truly time to push the opening acts off the stage and get ready for the *looks down at padded codpiece under spandex trousers* main event, if you know what our book's subjects are talking about AND I THINK THAT YOU DO. That's right: we're heading to the Sunset Strip of Los Angeles, California, USA, circa 1985, and we're just investigating the plain HECK out of the local flora and fauna. Or at least asking the local flora and fauna to tell us what was on their minds 'way back when. And when it gets boring we set off flash pots and / or whang the switch that makes the drum kit start chugging down a long set of railroad tracks it's attached to—it'll all make sense by the end, we promis, so please! put your lighters in the air and get ready for two hard-rocking slabs of hard-rocking rock, followed by one semi-explicably emotional slice of ballad action, because it's time for us ALL to tease our hairs and enjoy (?) the power and passion of rock and roll, '80s style! Hard rock in the 1980s was a hedonistic and often intensely creative wellspring of escapism that perfectly encapsulated―and maybe even helped to define―a spectacularly over-the-top decade. Indeed, fist-pumping hits like Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” Mötley Crüe’s “Girls, Girls, Girls,” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle” are as inextricably linked to the era as Reaganomics, Pac-Man, and E.T.From the do-or-die early days of self-financed recordings and D.I.Y. concert productions that were as flashy as they were foolhardy, to the multi-Platinum, MTV-powered glory years of stadium-shaking anthems and chart-topping power ballads, to the ultimate crash when grunge bands like Nirvana forever altered the entire climate of the business, Tom Beaujour and Richard Bienstock's Nothin' But a Good Time captures the energy and excess of the hair metal years in the words of the musicians, managers, producers, engineers, label executives, publicists, stylists, costume designers, photographers, journalists, magazine publishers, video directors, club bookers, roadies, groupies, and hangers-on who lived it.Featuring an impassioned foreword by Slipknot and Stone Sour vocalist and avowed glam metal fanatic Corey Taylor, and drawn from over 200 new interviews with members of Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Guns N’ Roses, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Winger, Warrant, Cinderella, Quiet Riot and others, as well as Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford and many more, this is the ultimate, uncensored, and often unhinged chronicle of a time where excess and success walked hand in hand, told by the men and women who created a sound and style that came to define a musical era―one in which the bands and their fans went looking for nothin’ but a good time…and found it.HOST:  Rob MellonFEATURED BREW:  Pantheon Rum Barrel Aged Imperial Brown Ale, Ale Asylum Brewery, Madison, WisconsinBOOK:  Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosionhttps://www.amazon.com/N%C3%B6thin-But-Good-Time-Uncensored/dp/1250195756/ref=sr_1_1?crid=15STBUREYJM6D&dchild=1&keywords=nothin+but+a+good+time&qid=1621906497&sprefix=nothin+but+a+good+time%2Caps%2C178&sr=8-1MUSIC:  Bones Forkhttps://bonesfork.com/

Authors Tom Beaujour & Rich Bienstock captured the rise and fall of one of the most storied eras in rock & roll history in their new book, “Nothin' But A Good Time: The Uncensored History of the ‘80s Hard Rock Explosion.” They document the exploding hard metal scene on the Sunset Strip in the 80s, stuff of legend, epitomized by the image, reputation, and music of the notorious bad boys of metal, Motley Crue. They explore flyer'ing culture, pay-to-play, competition and camaraderie, the birth of grunge, and the abrupt end to a style of music that was all but cancelled by the early 90s. Tom & Rich share stories from their interviews with Ozzy Osbourne, Poison, Warrant, Dokken, Trixter, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Skid Row, Winger, Faster Pussycat, producer Howard Benson, famous music manager Cliff Burnstein, and scores of roadies, label execs, sound engineers, and security guards. Authors Tom Beaujour & Rich Bienstock captured the rise and fall of one of the most storied eras in rock & roll history in their new book, “Nothin’ But A Good Time: The Uncensored History of the ‘80s Hard Rock Explosion.” They document the exploding hard metal scene on the Sunset Strip in the 80s, stuff of legend, epitomized by the image, reputation, and music of the notorious bad boys of metal, Motley Crue. They explore flyer’ing culture, pay-to-play, competition and camaraderie, the birth of grunge, and the abrupt end to a style of music that was all but cancelled by the early 90s. Tom & Rich share stories from their interviews with Ozzy Osbourne, Poison, Warrant, Dokken, Trixter, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Twisted Sister, Skid Row, Winger, Faster Pussycat, producer Howard Benson, famous music manager Cliff Burnstein, and scores of roadies, label execs, sound engineers, and security guards. You’ll hear about the practical joke that Dokken played on producer Tom Werman, Slash’s failed audition for Poison, Sebastian Bach’s first night with Skid Row, and the wild plane ride to Russia for the Make A Difference Foundation benefit concert.

This week's interview is with Tom Beaujour, co-author (along with Richard Bienstock) of the awesome new book, "Nothin' But A Good Time: The Uncensored History of the 80's Hard Rock Explosion." Its the definitive, no-holds-barred oral history of 1980s hard rock and hair metal, told by the musicians and industry insiders who lived it. Darren and Tom get into the influence Van Halen and David Lee Roth had on this scene, the scene itself in Southern California, and much more. At the top, Steve and Darren discuss the ridiculousness of the Grammys and their lame "tribute" to Eddie Van Halen and Wolgang's response. Also, was Michael Anthony going to join Dave onstage at a show last year?  And, Paul Stanley's Soul Station and how Diamond Dave should have/could have done something similar, years before. "Nothin' But A Good Time: The Uncensored History of the 80's Hard Rock Explosion" is available online and at your favorite independent bookstore.
