Here's part two of my hang with Rik Emmett, live from Eli's Loft, to talk about his newest project Ten Telecaster Tales. As always, the conversation is rich, insightful and a lot of fun.   Rik performs four tracks from the record that accompanies the book, for the very first time since they'd been recorded. In turn, he talks about performance as communion, from the smallest (this one for NSTS listeners) right up to Triumph's US Festival appearance. He also shares great insights about the reggae influence in “Fight The Good Fight” and how he was asked to hurriedly come up with a single by the record company for the The Sport of Kings album that resulted in “Somebody's Out There”.    On Friday, March 21 at 8pm, Rik and I will be recording two episodes of No Sleep ‘til Sudbury with a live audience at Black Bellows in Collingwood, Ontario. This week we took it to the people, and the people agreed! Not just the people; we got the ok from The Chairman, Mighty K, and the entire 51st state of Canada! Therefore, we give you “Grave Mistake: TRIUMPH Shoulda Been Huge-er!!!”. This is part one of our celebration of an amazing power trio from Toronto that has been largely forgotten in the rock n' roll pantheon. They also happen to have Bonafide Guitar God in the band that rarely gets the praise he deserves! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that Captain Content has mentioned before as a band he would love to dive into deeper. While not the most obscure band we've ever covered (they have multiple platinum and gold albums in the US and Canada), they have been largely forgotten as the rock giants they once were. We think they should be remembered as Titans or Rock and thus: Huge-er!!! https://www.youtube.com/live/qowvTjMPyGc?si=nwSTUA-EGA5MD8L3 The Story of 1984: How Van Halen's Biggest Album Became a Rock Masterpiece When Eddie Van Halen first introduced Jump to the band, the reaction was far from enthusiastic. David Lee Roth, in particular, balked, arguing that Eddie was a guitar hero, not a keyboard player. However, producer Ted Templeman immediately recognized its potential, calling it a “stone-cold hit.” That moment of skepticism turned to triumph as Jump became Van Halen's only #1 hit, propelling their 1984 album into rock history. 1984 wasn't just another album—it was Van Halen's magnum opus. Released in a year symbolized by George Orwell's dystopian novel, the album instead became the soundtrack to a carefree, hedonistic era. Eddie Van Halen's groundbreaking blend of guitar mastery and keyboard innovation defined the album, which dominated charts, airwaves, and hearts. The Legacy of 1984 A commercial juggernaut, 1984 earned RIAA Diamond certification for selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. It remains one of the best-selling rock albums of the 1980s, rivaled in the band's catalog only by their 1978 debut. Its tight 33-minute runtime delivered four charting singles: Jump (#1), Panama (#13), I'll Wait (#13), and Hot for Teacher (#56). Even deep cuts like Top Jimmy, Drop Dead Legs, and House of Pain showcased the band's fiery creativity. The album opened with 1984, an instrumental synth piece that set the tone for Eddie's vision of a brave new world. This wasn't just an album—it was a statement. The Road to Stardom By the early 1980s, Van Halen was already a top touring act. Their 1982 Hide Your Sheep tour sold out all 83 North American dates, and their South American debut introduced them to thousands of new fans. In 1983, their headline performance at the US Festival's Heavy Metal Day drew 375,000 fans and set a record with a $1.5 million payday. Eddie's growing celebrity status elevated the band further. His marriage to actress Valerie Bertinelli brought Van Halen into mainstream households, while his iconic guitar solo on Michael Jackson's Beat It created an unexpected crossover between rock, pop, and R&B. Building 1984 Frustrated by the rushed recording of Diver Down and its reliance on cover songs, Eddie sought more control. He built a home studio, 5150, named after the California police code for a mentally disordered person. With engineer Donn Landee, Eddie created a space where he could experiment on his terms. The 5150 studio became the birthplace of 1984. Eddie's fascination with keyboards took center stage, especially with the Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer. While synths had appeared on earlier Van Halen albums, they were often disguised as distorted guitars. On 1984, tracks like Jump and I'll Wait embraced their synth-driven identity while maintaining the band's hard rock roots. Eddie's guitar innovations also shone brightly. He used a rare 1958 Gibson Flying V for tracks like Hot for Teacher and Drop Dead Legs, while Steve Ripley's stereo guitars added unique textures to songs like Top Jimmy. The album balanced pop hooks with progressive rock influences, showcasing Eddie's genius. The Breakthrough and the Fallout When 1984 was released, Van Halen had reached their peak. The album's success was undeniable, but tensions within the band were rising. Eddie's increasing control over the creative process clashed with Roth's vision. While 1984 cemented their place as rock icons, it also foreshadowed Roth's departure and the end of Van Halen's original lineup. A Masterpiece That Endures Four decades later, 1984 remains a defining moment in rock history. It's a testament to Eddie Van Halen's relentless innovation and the band's ability to push boundaries. From the infectious synth riff of Jump to the hard-hitting grooves of Panama and Hot for Teacher, the album captures a band at their peak—fearless, ambitious, and unforgettable.

In this episode, we're celebrating the thrill of guitarmony, sick riffs, and driving 8th-note rhythms by talking about Judas Priest. Before getting ready for this episode, neither of your esteemed hosts had ever delved into the Priest discography beyond the rock-radio hits and Beavis and Butthead—though we'd both spent our time with Heavy Metal Parking Lot. Since so many of the GOATs hold the band in the highest of regard, we knew that K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton belonged on this list, so we embarked on a journey to find out why. After hours of listening and watching, we're happy to report that we get it. From their debut, 1974's Rocka Rolla, through 1980's British Steel, deep into the '80s-production era with 1986's Turbo, and through the speed-metal bravado of 1990's Painkiller, plus live videos and records—the super-loud Us Festival performance and the crushing Unleashed in the East record—we found a lot that we love.If you're new to Priest's music or are trying to find your own starting point, we've got some great tips for guitar jammers. And if you're a hardcore fan, maybe you've got some tips you can share for our next steps. By 1983, all-day rock festivals were nothing new in the U.S., with iconic events like California Jam, Texxas Jam, Day on the Green, Monterey Pop Festival, and Woodstock drawing massive crowds. However, a full-day festival dedicated entirely to heavy metal hadn't yet taken place on American soil. Across the Atlantic, the UK had already hosted a few Monsters of Rock Festivals at Castle Donington, spotlighting headbanger favorites like Rainbow, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Scorpions, and Blue Öyster Cult. Taking inspiration from these, the organizers of the second US Festival, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and promoter Bill Graham, made a brilliant decision: they dedicated Sunday, May 29th, 1983, exclusively to heavy metal fans. The lineup was a metalhead's dream: Van Halen headlined, with Scorpions, Triumph, Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne as support. The festival also gave a platform to then-up-and-comers Mötley Crüe and Quiet Riot. Interestingly, Joe Walsh was initially slated to perform that day but was moved to "Rock Day," headlined by David Bowie, on May 30th. To get Van Halen to pause work on their upcoming album—the now-legendary 1984—the organizers had to offer a hefty paycheck. And hefty it was: Van Halen reportedly received $1.5 million for their two-hour set, an unheard-of sum at the time. Not only that, but Van Halen went all out backstage. According to Pete Angelus, a key collaborator on the band's music videos and stage lighting, David Lee Roth decided to spend a significant portion of their payment creating a lavish backstage compound. "Dave thought it'd be a great idea to take a substantial chunk of that money and build a 'backstage compound' where he could hang out for five days before the event," Angelus shared in the 2011 book MTV Ruled the World: The Early Years of Music Video. "He had his friends out there, different trailers, and even dancers flown in from strip clubs." Angelus also recalled filming a short, staged documentary a month before the festival to depict the wild happenings in the compound. Despite the fun, the extended partying seemed to catch up with Roth. "An hour before they were set to go on, I noticed that five days of partying had caught up with Dave. He was a little shaky, but he was just enjoying himself," Angelus laughed. While Roth may not have been at 100%, Van Halen still delivered. Watching footage of their US Festival performance today, you can see Roth occasionally flub a line, but the band's energy and party vibe were unmatched. For two solid hours, they owned the stage, capturing the spirit of 1980s hard rock at its peak. “Exclusively Van Halen" is the ultimate destination for all things Van Halen. This Thursday marks Thanksgiving in the United States, a festival so deeply rooted in American tradition that it's more widely celebrated than Christmas. Thanksgiving commemorates the convivial sharing of a meal between the first English pilgrims to land on the shores of present-day Massachusetts in 1620 and the Wampanoag tribe, the local inhabitants. That's the story taught in school, but for the Native Americans, Thanksgiving is in fact a day of mourning. Our correspondents Fanny Allard and Fraser Jackson report.

Rik Emmett is a vocalist, guitarist and former member of the rock band Triumph, which earned 18 gold and nine platinum records in Canada and the United States in the late 1970s and early'80s. Triumph was known for its BIG live shows featuring lights, pyrotechnics, and lots of spandex (as was appropriate for the era!). Along with Rik's bandmates Gil Moore and Mike Levine, the power trio played loud, guitar-forward tunes with uplifting lyrics. 1981's Allied Forces sold over a million copies in the US and included the songs “Fight the Good Fight” and “Magic Power,” which—if you haven't heard it recently—merits a listen on your favorite music app. Eventually, disputes with the record label, the financial stress of touring / recouping advances, and intra-band competition lead to Triumph's break-up. In his new memoir, Lay It on the Line: A Backstage Pass to Rock Star Adventure, Conflict and Triumph, Rik shares insights into the trials and tribulations of the rock n roll life and how he has found peace as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. The band and has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.  In this episode, 'Rik and I discuss: How the pressure to churn out hits affects the songwriting process Why he started sharing his songwriting royalties with his bandmates Triumph's performance at the 1983 US Festival, which was founded by Steve Wozniak How a start-up network called MTV used a Triumph promo video to help fill its schedule The cruel arc of celebrity and how an artist deals with "the whimpering disappointment of general disinterest." ⭐ Rate and Review Crazy Money here. Memorial Day weekend 1983 was the second coming of the US Festival in Southern California, the brainchild of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak who, after 1982's test run, continued the mission of creating a community event combining technology with rock.   With a 4-day festival over 7 days, the format commenced on Friday with the “new wave” acts as a theme. Australia was highly represented with The Divinyls, Men at Work and our very own INXS. Saturday was “heavy metal day” with Van Halen and Ozzie Osbourne spearheading, and Sunday “rock day” with a young U2 and Stevie Nicks paving the way for the main act David Bowie. The following Sunday concluded the event with Country Day.   The importance of this event cannot be underestimated in inspiring future festivals such as Lollapalooza and Coachella, with over 1,100,000 fans attending these 1982/83 shows despite the collective apprehension after the infamous Altamont gig and Woodstock events some 15 years earlier.   Despite losing millions of dollars, the US Festival gigs of 1982 and 1983 represented a true zeitgeist moment in time and created fan and artist experiences that are still eulogized 40 years later. Importantly for INXS, the festival represented a pivotal confidence boost where they went from the pubs & club gigs of 1000 people to 180,000 at said Festival.   With Mark Opitz recently remastering INXS' 9-song setlist performance, we urge you to check that out, plus sit back and dive deep into this nostalgic retrospective of an event that's still admired 40 years later.   You can now pre-order copies of 'Rooms for the Memory" on Vinyl and CD, using the link below. Rudy Sarzo (of Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, & Dio fame), Raven's John and Mark Gallagher, and bassist PJ Farley (of Trixter & Fozzy fame) bring the sex, drugs and rock & roll to the Evolution of 80s Heavy Metal! The stories from the studio and the stage are almost unbelievable and include the immensely talented Randy Rhoads, a very young Metallica, the mythical KISS, and the behemoth 1983 US Festival! There are tales about the origin of Quiet Riot and the writing of the “Metal Health” album, what caused Raven to be dropped from the massive Judas Priest Turbo Tour, the truth about Randy Rhoads planning to quit Ozzy's band, and why three "heys" from Paul Stanley was more than enough acknowledgement for PJ Harvey and Trixter. The guys talk gold records, bad record deals, the MTV influence, Winnebago tours, and the grunge cloud that all but killed heavy metal as soon as it burst onto the scene. Thank you for supporting our sponsors!FanDuel: download the FanDuel app & use promo code JERICHO to get up a “No Sweat First Bet” up to $1,000 dollars.eBay Motors: get the right parts, the right fit, and the right prices. https://ebaymotors.comToyota: Visit https://toyota.com/GRFamily to find your perfect Toyota!Cynch: download the Cynch app or go https://www.cynch.com/ and get your first tank exchange for $10 with code JERICHO.Bosch Tools: learn more at https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/SlingTV: check out https://www.sling.com/ for special offers  STAY CONNECTED:TikTok: @TalkIsJerichoInstagram: @talkisjericho @chrisjerichofozzy Twitter: @TalkIsJericho @IAmJerichoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisJerichoFozzyWebsite: https://www.webisjericho.com/

Is the earliest Oingo Boingo song just a fun little bop, or is there a dark heart lurking behind those staccato horn riffs?
