October 14, 2003 - Holding a 3-0 lead in the eighth inning over the Florida Marlins with only 5 outs standing between them and their first World Series appearance since 1945, the Cubs fall apart after a fan, sitting along the left-field foul line at Wrigley Field, tries to catch a foul ball that is about to be caught by Cubs' outfielder Moises Alou for the second out of the inning. The Cubs argued for interference, but umpire Mike Everitt ruled there was no fan interference because the ball had broken the plane separating the field of play from the stands. The Cubs lead proceeded to disintegrate; fueling the Wrigley faithful's ire at this fan who would have to be escorted from the park for his own safety. Lost in all of this is the error by, the usually sure handed shortstop Luis Gonzalez, that would have resulted in an inning ending double play which would have allowed the Cubs to escape the eighth with a two run lead. The Marlins would go onto score 8 runs and win the game. The Cubs also would lose the seventh and final game of the NLCS. October 14, 1975 - The Cincinnati Reds take a 2-1 lead in the World Series with a controversial 6 - 5, 10-inning victory over the Boston Red Sox in Cincinnati. In the 10th inning, Reds pinch-hitter Ed Armbrister attempts a sacrifice bunt and bounces the ball in front of the plate. Boston catcher Carlton Fisk, in an attempt to field the ball, collides with Armbrister and throws the ball into center field attempting to force Cesar Gerónimo at second base. Gerónimo goes to third base and later scores the game winner. Home plate umpire Larry Barnett rules there is no interference despite heated protests by the Red Sox.

The Athletic's Jon Greenberg discusses the interviews he did for the 20th anniversary oral history he wrote on the 2003 Cubs. Mark Prior, Kerry Wood, Dusty Baker, E-ramis Ramirez, Jim Hendry, Gabor Bako, Eric Karros, Shawn Estes and more (all the stars) talked about their fond and not so fond memories of that season that was really great until it wasn't. Find out which ex-Cubs dodged his calls, and how he ended up with enough stuff for three columns with a fourth yet to come. Find out how he sleuthed an email address for one of the most in-demand characters in the entire saga. Jon theorizes that Steve Bartman was, and probably still is, a loyal reader of Desipio/Pointless Exercise. They also talk about an event earlier that season that foreshadowed the way it all ended. All that and much more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message

10-14-2023 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by talking about the difficulties the Boston Red Sox may be facing in their efforts to hire a new General Manager/ President of Baseball Operations. John talks about the decision to move on from Ben Cherington and David Dombrowski not too long after both led their franchise to World Series Championships. After spending a couple of minutes previewing the League Championship Series', John comes up with a proposal to lessen the amount of time between the last day (Sunday) of the regular season and the League Division Series. John says it is time to stop blaming Head Coaches and Coordinators for the teams that are struggling and start blaming the players (and he then explains why). John expresses an understanding of frustration for now former Charlotte Hornets forward Kai Jones before suggesting he let his future numbers speak for themselves before comparing himself to any NBA greats. Finally, on todays #SavingSportsHistory, John remembers five World Series that ended on this date, a baseball player that died after injuring his bladder hitting a home run, what George Blanda has in common with Joe Montana, the BBWAA, Ezzard Charles, Chris Chambliss, Wayne Gretzky, when the Olympics loss a lot of luster, and who was to blame more than Steve Bartman for his infamous 15 minutes of fame (It may not be who you think), as well as Oscar Charleston, John Wooden, Charlie Joiner, and 2006 Tour de France Champion Floyd Landis!
If the foul pop off Luis Castillo's bat in Game 6 of the NLCS had landed a foot either way, the life of one ordinary Cubs fan would have remained anonymous and thoroughly normal. Instead, 20 years ago this week, that fan was thrust into a maelstrom of controversy he didn't deserve when the Marlins took advantage and staged a massive comeback at Wrigley Field with the help of several culprits on the Cubs, all far more culpable than Steve Bartman ever could have been. Mike and Bill look back at the Marlins' surprising run to the National League pennant and decide exactly who should have gotten the scorn that was unfairly heaped on a guy who only ever wanted to watch his favorite team get to the World Series. Plus, happy birthday to Brian Downing and Doc Crandall!

Take A 20 is taking the "L" to the North Side of Chicago. And speaking of "L's," we are embracing the pain to discuss the Chicago Cubs and everything that went wrong on October 14, 2003. To this day, one word comes to mind when you mention the 2003 Cubs. That word is “Bartman," the superfan who became a super villain. In this episode, we speak with a different Cubs superfan, Jeff Shook, Professor of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh, who was in the stands that fateful evening when the Cubs were on the cusp of advancing to the World Series. Until it all shattered, like a Sammy Sosa corked bat.

Steed and Jrad are joined by 2 special guests in this week's Chubstep. First the misunderstood Chicago legend Steve Bartman joins the show but now he's in Peter Criss makeup to discuss the 19th anniversary of the Cubs incident and what really happened, his son, his new Kiss baseball league, balancing being a Cubs fan and a member of Kiss army, the long term positive implications of Moises Alou not catching the ball, and Kiss legal court. The guys continue with talking to comedian Ben Stager about Canada, his start in comedy, favorite comedians, celiac awareness and protesting bakeries, his connection to the Cubs, standing up for people with glasses and how he got his instagram handle.

Spiegs compared the umpire who threw Shane out Sunday to John McSherry, an MLB umpire who quite literally died on the field. Not a hot start! And are you able to find any positives in a White Sox loss? Any good found in Lucas Giolito's start is completely washed away by Gavin Sheets' inability to field his position in right field. Later, we're joined by Kyle Farnsworth, who had a hell of a baseball career. He's filled with stories about his new body-building career, fighting a box fan, fighting Paul Wilson, the Steve Bartman game in 2003, staying out WAY too late in Wrigleyville, the beef between the Cubs clubhouse and the broadcast booth in 2004 and pitching in a bullpen with Mariano Rivera.

For Bonnie Ford, being a sportswriter is about more than covering games and knowing statistics. She carved out a stellar career by acting on what she felt was a journalistic obligation: Digging into complicated social, cultural and financial topics related to sports. Bonnie did extensive work on doping scandals, especially in cycling, which made her an expert on the Tour de France and its superstar, Lance Armstrong. “I'm grateful that I had such a compelling figure for so much of my career to cover,” she says. Bonnie also discusses how she wrote about issues common to all athletes such as mental health. She shares how Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt used her platform to talk about depression. She also tells us about covering the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, about profiling Art Modell as he moved the Browns from Cleveland, and what it was like at Wrigley Field after Steve Bartman tried to catch a foul ball. Bonnie was a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford and a Fellow at the University of Maryland Knight Center for Specialized Journalism.
