Confronting The Meltdown With STEVE TULIPANA From SEASON TO RISK

Interview by Kris PetersSeason to Risk are a noise rock band that debuted surprisingly on Columbia Records after the early 90s indie-signing frenzy. Known as relentless road dogs, constantly on tour for years. With roots in the 80s hardcore scene, Season to Risk were hailed as “the next Soundgarden” after their almost radio-friendly first album was released. But they took their major label money and went in a new direction of screeching noise, distorted bass and screaming vocals on subsequent albums. They built a recording studio and became increasingly experimental over the years, developing a rabid fan base in the process. After a decade of live shows and four album releases, band members went off to explore other types of music in the bands Shiner, Roman Numerals, Violenteer, and many other recording projects. But Season To Risk never disbanded, and continue to play live shows when their schedules align, sometimes touring when an appealing offer comes along. Singer Steve Tulipana has a captivating stage presence in the lineage of Iggy, Nick Cave and David Yow. He stays excessively busy running several venues in Kansas City, Missouri. For Record Store Day 2025 (April 12), Season to Risk will release 1-800-MELTDOWN on Init Records. The glow-in-the-dark album art invokes 80s horror VHS, and the record includes new songs engineered by guitarist Duane Trower at his Weights and Measures Soundlab, compiled with unreleased songs, including Undone, the music in their industrial punk scene in the film Strange Days.HEAVY spoke with frontman Steve Tulipana to get the full story, starting by asking if 1-800-MELTDOWN is a retrospective Best Of for Season To Risk."It's actually a lot of material that was either was non-released or was released on seven inch," he corrected. "So that's the bulk of the album. Things that are pretty obscure and hard to find in our collection. And then there's two songs that have been… one that's brand new and one that was recorded in this century. That's a good start."We mention that it is a bold move for the band having not released new music in 25 years."I think we always wanted to…," he measured. "We never really cared too much about being mainstream. We always wanted to be a little more experimental and really wanted to show people that side of what we're doing because it's informing the stuff that we're currently working on. So I think that's what we were wanting to get out. We have been reissuing our old records on vinyl and remastered here in the States over the last few years so that's kind of it's kind of a lead up to that."In the full interview, Steve discussed 1-800-MELTDOWN in greater detail, expressing excitement about the album which includes a mix of unreleased tracks and a new song, emphasizing its focus on artistic expression rather than mainstream appeal. He shared insights into the challenges of cohesively arranging diverse songs and recounted a story about the track Undone, which was initially considered too noisy for a film soundtrack. The conversation highlighted the inclusion of past and present band members in the album, the new song Echo Chamber addressing social media's negative impact, and the band's ongoing creative journey, including plans for reissuing previous records.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

I'll never forget the first time I heard the music of the iconic noise-rock band The Jesus Lizard — it was more than thirty years ago, thanks to my older brother Michael playing me their song “Seasick,” from the band's second studio album, Goat, released in 1991 and produced by the legendary Steve Albini.  That song blew my mind. It made me feel like I was actually inside of the tune itself, and that, like the narrator of the song, yowling about how he “can't swim,” that I was somehow drowning in the music. Not in a scary way — in an empowering, visceral way. It's a song I still go back to, and that album is one I go back to all the time. It was a thrill to get to ask David about that song, in particular, about working with Albini, and so much more. In this episode, David discusses his earliest creative inclinations as a visual artist, and as a music lover and musician, and how everything changed when he discovered punk rock at age twenty. We also delved into the making of the first new studio album by The Jesus Lizard in twenty-six years, their excellent, newly released LP Rack. Although he cites influences such as the Beatles and Queen and The Huns and Fear and Nick Cave's band The Birthday Party, what David does is a thing unto itself. He is truly an inimitable performer and it was an honor to speak to him for this episode.

This week we're discussing every album by Flipper. While known to many as a huge influence to bands like Nirvana and the Melvins, Flipper are a punk band unlike any other. They're as amazing as they are terrible, but completely unique and bizarrely innovative. After founding member and bassist/vocalist Will Shatter died in 1987, they've gone through various breakups and reunions, even as far as recruiting Nirvana's Krist Novoselic and the Jesus Lizard's David Yow. These days they tour with the legendary Mike Watt.Closing track: "Hard Cold World" from Public Flipper Limited (1986)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexRobert @hoodpass.wicTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteRobert's show on NTS Radio: https://www.nts.live/shows/yayayi Robert's album: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6y9HtgqNCUTgnemSjTdpO4?autoplay=trueMike's Picks:Sex Bomb Baby (1988) -- Best AlbumAlbum - Generic Flipper (1982) -- Personal FavoriteAmerican Grafishy (1993) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Album - Generic Flipper (1982) -- Best AlbumGone Fishin' (1984) -- Personal FavoritePublic Flipper Limited (1986) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteRobert's Picks:Album - Generic Flipper (1982) -- Best AlbumSex Bomb Baby (1988) -- Personal FavoriteAmerican Grafishy (1993) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode...Album - Generic Flipper (1982)Blow'n Chunks (1984)Gone Fishin' (1984)Public Flipper Limited (1986)Sex Bomb Baby (1988)American Grafishy (1993)Love (2009)

Lovingly referred to as one of the leading noise bands of all time, US rock outfit The Jesus Lizard are putting their long-suffering fans out of their misery this Friday, September 13, when they drop their first album in 26 years, Rack.Known for their energetic and off-the-cuff live performances as much as their music, The Jesus Lizard managed to release six albums between 1987 and 1996, gaining a huge underground following that had as much to do with the band members honest, egoless attitude towards life, music and the world in general. After disbanding in 1996 with a strong likelihood the decision would be permanent, The Jesus Lizard faded back into the musical void from which they had risen, but the fire and passion within, while possibly waning, still held enough heat to bring the members back together sporadically over the course of the next decade and a bit. They played a select number of "re-enactment" shows, which in turn led to an increased musical libido, which in turn led to The Jesus Lizard resuming their love/hate affair with the music industry and writing a new album. Vocalist David Yow joined HEAVY to discuss the new music and getting the gang back together."Pretty good," he replied when asked how it felt to be on the cusp of a new album after so long. "It's a little strange to be doing a record… we broke up in 1999 so now it's kind of an odd thing to have gotten back together and written enough songs to make an album and made that album. But I'm happy. It turned out much better than I would have guessed."In the full interview, David talks more about the musical nature of Rack, how they approached the album in terms of demographic, retaining their old sound and image, the early days of the band and where they fit in, the break-up of The Jesus Lizard and how they came back together, at what point he knew the band would start writing together again and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Lickers Jay and Deon wax poetic on ten of their favorite records from their respective collections which are filed under the letter J. Their choices lead to discussions on Blindboy Boatclub (he rules), the origins of their nicknames (do you even know these guys?), another blind-bought Burger Records beauty (Jay is a total Burger fanboy), Steve Albini (R.I.P.), and much more. Tune in and rock out! --- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming thirty-seventh episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. On this episode we talk to Todd about playing drums for Juliana Hatfield, Bullet Lavolta & the Lemonheads — touring with Soundgarden, getting screwed by Lita Ford, being a sorta “brother in law” to David Yow, teaching Scott to ski, Pedro Pascale, and why drummers make the best editors. Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've paired the frontmen for two gruff-sounding, kinda scary noise-rock bands, but who as it turns out are a couple of sweethearts: David Yow and Andrew Falkous. David Yow began his music life in the Texas band Scratch Acid, which built its own legend before burning out in the mid-1980s, and then took his maniacal presence to The Jesus Lizard. That band built a following in the next dozen years both for its confrontational music and for Yow's intensity in their live shows. You'd often find him drunk and half-naked, howling into the faces of stunned crowds. First you were scared, and then you loved it. The Jesus Lizard benefited from the grunge explosion in the mid-1990s, but they were always too weird and scary for the mainstream—even when they got an inexplicable major-label deal with Capitol. (You know, home of the Beatles.) The Jesus Lizard split in 1999, but have reunited a few times since then, with demand for Yow's insanity peaking every few years. There hasn't been a Jesus Lizard show in a few years, though—or a “reenactment” as he calls their reunion shows—but Yow has been out recently singing for the early noise-punk band Flipper. You may also have seen him in bit parts in a few movies; the guy has led a varied, full life so far. Andrew Falkous unfortunately just had to postpone his own US tour-slash-reenactment with his band Mclusky, which was originally active from the mid-90s until 2006. An illness has affected his Falkous' ability to sing, but he's planning to reschedule very soon. In the years after Mclusky, Falkous made similarly brutish-but-incredible records both as the frontman of a band called Future of the Left and as a sort-of-solo artist under the name Christian Fitness. But as the legend of Mclusky snowballed and the 20th anniversary of their absolute classic of a second album Mclusky Do Dallas approached, he was coaxed to relaunch the name and to play those old songs again. Here's hoping for a quick recovery and new dates soon. Here's a little taste of what was certainly Mclusky's biggest song, the charmingly titled “Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues.” In this spirited conversation, Yow and Falkous start by talking about Falkous' recent battles with his own voice. They get into the nervousness of playing your first-ever show as a singer: Yow dealt with the jitters by handing out tabs of acid to the crowd, while Falkous wore a yellow T-shirt. They talk about beer and whether Australian children should be forced to live in wells. Yow casually slaughters some sacred cows of the alterna-rock world. And lest you think they're too tough for their own good, you should know that I edited out 15 minutes where they talked about how much they love their cats. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Andrew Falkous and David Yow for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting service and check out all the goodness at this very site. If a feather fell from a weather bell, would you wonder whether your will would be well? Or would wonder well in your whither well till your whethers wilt as your feathers filled? Do you know the answer? It takes puzzling the sphinxian riddle to cross the threshold into the King's Chamber. But cross it we do! Welcome back for the first time to episode 18 of the Post Relevant Podcast. This just might be the very most ultimates-est and super-bestest episode of the podcast ever created in three-dimensional time space! Or even in 7 dimensional thrime-space! (Thrime-space is sort of like time-space, but in in the 7th dimension...it's too hard to explain right now....) Reaching new levels of sound design and special effects, the King's Chamber is a right banger, I must say! Brother Andy returns once again to hash it out with show host Phil Ristaino, and they re-create the scene in "Under the Silver Lake" where Sam is chained to a chair in a bear cave and has to explain his way out of possessing dog biscuits to the mysterious Homeless King. You might ask, how can you make a two hour podcast about a 5 minute scene in a movie from 2018? Well, look, its possible, ok? You gotta listen to the show to find out. You should get an answer right around the 2 hour mark, keep listening.... Here's how the truths are revealed: 1. We enter the great pyramid and confront the futuristic riddle. 2. Phil and Andy make several left turns at Albuquerque as they remember Bugs Bunny's "Wackiki Rabbit," ask why brother Mark is avoiding being on the show, how Death loves showbiz in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey," how to speak English with a bad Swedish accent, who is a hamburger and who is a hotdog, and how to effortlessly create your own foley for a podcast by banging and clanging stuff off-handedly while recording. Among other things! This beginning of the show is most non-heinous! 3. Max Flackman (aka Matt Kalman, guest from the infamous episode 13 where Phil and Max get drunk) re-emerges from the woodlands of upstate NY to respond to Phil's revelations of all the lies Oliver Stone foisted on the unsuspecting public when he released his 90s epic "The Doors." Hint - Jim Morrison never killed a duck. Gasp! That's just scratching the surface.... 4. Yet another brand new song is played, entitled "Tall Girl." Pretty self-explanatory. 5. In the decode section of the show, we talk about being pregnant in a float tank and arguing with Judge Mablean on national TV. Andy talks about the imminent arrival of his new baby. Phil explores the UTSL reddit. Phil digs into the relationship between Homeless King actor David Yow and Kurt Cobain. Phil re-investigates the Horned God/Osiris/Green Man connections in the movie. Phil and Andy re-ennact the aforementioned scene between the Homeless King and Sam. Is the truth revealed? We notice Sam's been sitting on his gun the whole time. Phil and Andy finish the episode still trying to figure out what "Hamburgers Are Love" means.... Original release date: 11/30/12 Original Episode notes: If you're involved in the music scene in Seattle, then you know who these guys are. And if not, well, sit back and enjoy the ride. They've each played in a lot of bands, but this episode focuses on their time together in The Cops, who were one of the most exciting live bands around for a number of years. In addition to their musical output, they are Seattle cultural impresarios, with Mike running the consistently good Mt. Fuji Records, and Drew co-owning Hazlewood, one of the best places to have a cocktail in the city. There's so much we talked about in this episode, so as a teaser, I'll just share with you the notes I took while editing this: "David Yow parties hard. ATP drug dog taunting. Dog suit. Partying with Red Fang and Big Business, shunning Danny from Tool. Murder City Devils' tour rider. Hold Steady assholes. Touring with Cursive and Jeremy Enigk. House with water torture buckets. Soap Opera Star's band." Listen and figure out what all of that means. This episode features the music of The Cops, all of which is available at Mt. Fuji Records.

In this latest episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast host Michael Shields sits down with filmmaker/musician Eric Mahoney to take a look back at the legacy and genius of the the Dayton-based indie-rock band Brainiac (3RA1N1AC). On the cusp of a major label deal and breaking into the mainstream, Brainiac’s lead singer and driving force, Tim Taylor, died tragically in a car accident halting the band’s trajectory and forever affecting everyone in Taylor’s orbit. Mahoney’s documentary, Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero, explores Brainiac’s rise to prominence and dissects the intricacies of their unique sound, one that was light years ahead of its time. The documentary intimately whisks viewers into the lives of those closest to Taylor as they attempt to recover from, and process, the fallout from such a monumental loss. Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero celebrates the life and creativity of one of rock music's unsung heroes, exploring with humor and heart the way in which individuals cope with the changes that extreme and sudden loss precipitate.Eric Mahoney is a Dayton, OH born musician and filmmaker now residing in Brooklyn, NY. He fronted the band Murder Your Darlings and his film work has been screened at Tribeca, Cannes, and numerous other festivals around the world. His film, Brainiac: Transmissions After Zero, features interviews with artists who were deeply affected and influenced by Brainiac such as Fred Armisen (who played drums in the Chicago band Trenchmouth before his SNL career), Nirvana/PJ Harvey producer Steve Albini, The National’s Matt Berninger, Cedric Bixler-Zavalaformer of At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta, Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur, the Jesus Lizard’s David Yow, and more. In this podcast Michael and Eric discuss an often forgotten band whose influence can be felt throughout the music industry today, and introduce listeners to a documentary that offers a sense of closure and a path to healing for those forever altered by that fateful night when Tim Taylor and his genius was lost. Sometimes we revisit albums that have little to no internet presence, reviews that only appeared in print, and barely managed to slip into the big name publications. When that happens, there is little baggage or preconceived notion of what we're getting into. On the other end of spectrum, we have the 1991 album Goat by The Jesus Lizard. Now heralded as one of the defining alternative rock albums of the 90s, specifically of the "noise rock" sub genre, the list of bands that draw influence back to this band and album are numerous. But it left us questioning - what exactly is noise rock? To us, this was another example of Steve Albini's sharp and clean production paired with top notch musicianship. We split on our appreciation for David Yow's vocals, which shouldn't be a surprise - they are an acquired taste, but we agreed that this compact, thirty-minute recording is worth revisiting.   Songs In This Episode:   Intro - Mouth Breather 15:08 - Then Comes Dudley 17:24 - Nub 22:44 - Monkey Trick Outro - Rodeo In Juliet   To support the podcast, join us at Patreon for bonus content and more. "The punk kids didn't like us very much... and the kids who were into the math-y/emo type stuff... we were like 'fart and dick joke' guys (to them). We never really fit in anywhere." Sidekick Kato was a major force on the Chicago music scene in the 1990s, a true "band's band." I never thought I'd see the day when Sidekick Kato reunited, and yet... here we are. The band got back together for two shows, a warm-up at Epic Deli (2616 Schaid Ct, McHenry) and the "official" reunion show at Chop Shop next week.  They jumped in the Mazda for Epic Deli appetizers before their warm-up. Discussed on this week's show: The Greek fries. I would eat them every time, if I could. Why did Sidekick Kato break up in the first place? And why did the band get back together? (Spoiler warning: Tim from Rise Against had something to do with it.) The band's impact on the Chicago 90s scene. The band's second album, which has been consigned to oblivion and is largely unfindable. Sidekick Kato singer Tom Anderson: "I'm surprised I'm alive... I'm a pretty lucky guy." What would happen if you ate at Epic Deli every day, every meal, for a week? Was it awkward getting back together? The enduring talent of The Jesus Lizard's David Yow. The Addisons try to crash the recording. Des Plaines hot dog joints: Paradise Pup and Rand Red Hots. My relationship with Sidekick Kato in the 1990s. "We've always just kinda been... shitheads."
