By 1985, Motley Crue were in a tough place. Though they'd achieved success, wealth and worldwide fame thanks to their first 2 albums Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil, the band were suffering from some setbacks. Vince Neil had driven his Ferrari while drinking and caused a crash that ended up killing his friend Razzle Dingley of Hanoi Rocks. As he worked to stay sober and navigate his legal issues, Nikki Sixx was deep into a heroin addiction that forced producer Tom Werman to get someone else in to rerecord his bass parts. But Shout At The Devil went 4x platinum and the record company needed a follow up to keep the band's momentum alive and in the public eye. The result was Theater of Pain, an album the band in later years has said was too polished and they blamed Tom Werman (not their own substance issues or limits as musicians) for the end product. However, it resonated with the public and sold another 4 million copies thanks to the big radio hits and MTV videos Smokin In The Boys Room (a Brownsville Station cover) and power ballad Home Sweet Home. Theater of Pain is less raunchy than Shout At The Devil, a byproduct of the slick production. We felt the riffs weren't as killer as they had been and outside of the big hits their aren't too many standouts. Louder Than Hell is a heavy song more akin to Black Sabbath than typical Motley but was from the Shout At The Devil sessions and doesn't sound like anything else on TOP. Use It Or Lose It might feature Mick Mars best solo shredding effort with typical cliche lyrics. But the songs had the Motley Crue attitude, had a couple of radio friendly hits and they toured for 8 months around the world to propel sales and keep themselves in the public eye. It may not be our favorite Crue record but it's the one that got our attention back in 1985 and we give it our track x track review at 40. This week, we received our annual audit visit from corporate! That's right, The Chairman not only graced us with his presence, but he demanded we deliver to you this episode: “Grave Mistake: BÖC Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. One could argue that selling 24M albums would negate “Shoulda Been Huge” treatment. However, when most folks can only name 3 songs by this band, and one of them is due to an SNL skit, we think they fit the bill. This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category; however, there is a strong case to be made that they've been largely forgotten as innovators and architects of what we know as heavy metal. We think they should be remembered as titans of hard rock and metal! Hope ya dig!Songs this week include:Blue Öyster Cult - “Transmaniacon MC” from Blue Öyster Cult(1972)Blue Öyster Cult - “The Red & The Black” from Tyranny And Mutation (1973)Blue Öyster Cult - “Flaming Telepaths” from Secret Treaties (1974)Blue Öyster Cult - “Tenderloin” from Agents Of Fortune (1976)Blue Öyster Cult - “R.U. Legendary producer Tom Werman joins Jeff and Matt to talk about one of his favorite albums, Who's Next, by the Who.Tom is one of the best kind of people you can hope to meet in the music industry, because not only is he very talented as a producer, but he also is a music fan at heart. That's something that comes through again and again as you're reading his new memoir, Turn It Up: My Time Making Hit Records In The Glory Days Of Rock Music (Featuring Mötley Crüe, Poison, Twisted Sister, Jeff Beck, Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, And More). Yes, that's a very long title, but the good news is that if you needed a refresher course about Tom Werman and his life's work, you just got it! One of the great things about Turn It Up is that you get the stories about Werman's experience working with the mentioned artists (and more), but you also really get an inside look at what a producer does -- and how they do it. It's a valuable fly on the wall perspective on a number of levels, but Tom is able to explain the very technical job he did -- without getting overly technical in the way he illustrates that process. As it happens, the roots of the book began with a column that Tom wrote, The Producers, which ran at Jeff's website, Popdose. It's an interesting prequel that Jeff and Tom talk about as the interview begins. Tom has long been one of our favorite people when we think back to all of the albums we own that have his name in the liner notes, so it was a real joy to get a chance to dig in with Tom and discuss his career.P.S. Are you reading Jeff's words at Jefitoblog yet? Goodness gracious, get on over there and become part of the discussion!P.S.S. Here's a link to the Who's Next / Lifehouse box set that Matt mentions during the conversation with Tom. It's essential if you're a fan of the album.

MY TIME MAKING RECORDS IN THE GLORY DAYS OF ROCK MUSIC During his four-decade career in the recording industry, Tom Werman launched the success of REO Speedwagon, Ted Nugent, and Cheap Trick, and produced landmark albums by Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, Poison, Jeff Beck, and Blue Öyster Cult among many rock and metal superstars. Several years after leaving the music business, he was cruising the web and landed on a pop culture site featuring a scathing indictment of him as a producer, "a guy with a hard-rock résumé and a soft-rock mind." Blindsided by being pegged as a dogmatic musical hack, Werman wrote a rebuttal and then agreed to write a series on different aspects of a career in recording. He enjoyed the process so much that he decided to write a book. In Turn It Up! My Time Making Hit Records in the Glory Days of Rock Music (Jawbone Press; November 21, 2023), Tom Werman sets the record straight about his passion for hard-rock music and his talent for recognizing and nurturing incredible (and sometimes incredibly difficult) artists-and reveals much more. Werman takes readers back to the 1970s, when he began his career as A&R man (as he notes, with apologies, A&R women were rare at the time) with Epic Records, and through the '80s and '90s, when he built his reputation and sealed the fame of outstanding rockers as an independent record producer. Along the way, he shares anecdotes to thrill rock fans and offers insights into what happens in the recording studio, the role of the producer, and the essential components of a hit recor

Turn It Up!: My Time Making Hit Records In The Glory Days Of Rock Music (Featuring Mötley Crüe, Poison, Twisted Sister, Jeff Beck, Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, And More) TOM WERMAN is a former music industry executive and producer who worked with some of the biggest names in rock and metal during the 1970s and ‘80s. Shortly after joining Epic Records in 1970, he brought REO Speedwagon to the label, then discovered, signed, and produced Ted Nugent, Cheap Trick, and Molly Hatchet, among others. As an independent producer in the 1980s and ‘90s, he worked with acts including Blue Öyster Cult, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, LA Guns, Poison, Stryper, and Lita Ford. After retiring from producing in 2001, he owned and operated Stonover Farm, a luxury bed-and-breakfast in Lenox, Massachusetts. A fascinating, rock-star-studded read and vivid time-travel trip, Turn It Up! is also an inspiring memoir for anyone who cares about making and appreciating good music. I look forward to exploring interview opportunities.

Cheap Trick, Rick Nielsen, Tom Werman, and me.
Tom Werman was one of the most successful producers of the 70s and 80s. He's responsible for making Cheap Trick what they are thanks to his work on their first few albums. He's also behind some of the best power pop of the era like the Producers, Off Broadway, and Gary Myrick. And, he helped shape the sound of the Sunset Strip by producing massive albums by Motley Crue, Twisted Sister and Poison. Oh, he also discovered Ted Hugent, Boston, REO Speedwagon and more. Surprisingly, in the 90s he left it all behind to open a Bed and Breakfast. Tom elaborates on all of these and much more including not getting along with Dee Snider, some of his favorite lesser known projects like Mother's Finest, and why he walked away.
