We continue our examination of the year 1986 by talking about the albums that were released in the second half of the year. Metal and rap were reigning supreme with releases from Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer, and The Beastie Boys, but pop and rock offered up some really strong records as well with major releases from Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Berlin, The Pretenders, REM, Huey Lewis and the News, and Sparks. Wie naar Davis luistert, hoort niet alleen noten, maar ook een bepaalde houding ten opzichte van tijd, stilte en vernieuwing. Zijn oeuvre lijkt zich steeds te onttrekken aan elke definitie die men erop loslaat. Dat maakt zijn betekenis filosofisch relevant: Davis laat zien dat identiteit niet iets statisch is, maar een proces van voortdurende transformatie. Een van de opvallendste kenmerken van zijn muziek is het gebruik van ruimte. In albums als *Kind of Blue* wordt stilte niet als leegte ervaren, maar als een actief element. Deze benadering roept vragen op over de aard van expressie zelf. Moet muziek altijd gevuld zijn, of kan juist het weglaten een diepere vorm van communicatie zijn? Davis' antwoord lijkt te zijn dat betekenis ontstaat in de spanning tussen klank en stilte. Daarmee sluit hij aan bij een bredere existentiële intuïtie: dat wat niet gezegd wordt, vaak even belangrijk is als wat wel wordt uitgesproken. Daarnaast belichaamt Davis het idee van artistieke vrijheid als morele houding. Hij weigerde zich te conformeren aan de verwachtingen van zijn publiek of de industrie. Telkens wanneer hij succes bereikte—of het nu ging om bebop, modal jazz of fusion—koos hij ervoor om een nieuwe richting in te slaan. In die zin is zijn carrière een praktijk van wat de filosoof Nietzsche “zelfoverwinning” noemde: het voortdurend achterlaten van het oude zelf om ruimte te maken voor het nieuwe. Deze radicale trouw aan vernieuwing maakt hem tot een bron van inspiratie voor hedendaagse musici. De invloed van Miles Davis op huidige jazzmuzikanten ligt dan ook niet alleen in specifieke harmonieën of technieken, maar in een manier van denken. Moderne jazz kenmerkt zich door hybriditeit: invloeden van hiphop, elektronische muziek en wereldmuziek vloeien samen tot nieuwe vormen. Deze openheid is rechtstreeks schatplichtig aan Davis' grensverleggende experimenten, vooral in zijn latere werk zoals *Bitches Brew*. Hij legitimeerde het idee dat jazz geen afgesloten traditie is, maar een permeabel veld waarin alles kan worden opgenomen. Ten slotte blijft Davis relevant omdat hij de luisteraar actief betrekt. Super Bowl 60 was held on February 8, featuring a halftime show by Latin superstar Bad Bunny (with special guests Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin), and a pre-game performance by neo-punks Green Day. But in reaction against this, there was a second, independant "All American" halftime show featuring Kid Rock, Gabby Barrett, Lee Brice, and Brantley Gilbert. Both shows had their controversies and both are products of our current political environment. We talk about both of these, plus dive into the history of Super Bowl halftime shows and talk about some of our favorite past performances. Every week, Sue and Kendra highlight local men and women who are making our city stronger with their big hearts, bold ideas, and that unmistakable Boston spirit. Today they talked with 9 year old Sanova Napoleon- who has dedicated most of her life to dance. She began dancing at the age of 2 and currently trains at Studio28 Dance; she says dance is more than movement — it's a way to express herself. Sanova was accepted into the Debbie Allen Summer Intensive Program in Los Angeles, where she performed in The Wiz with Diana Ross in the audience. Next month Sanova will perform in her second season of Anthony Williams' Urban Nutcracker in Boston, celebrating its 25th Anniversary. She will appear in the roles of Mice, Duckling, and Tap City and is thrilled to be part of this spectacular production.

CATASTROPHIC PLANE CRASH OCCURS AT LOUISVILLE AIRPORT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-New York: Overnight and throughout the day, several explosive threats have emerged in New York City. Early this morning an explosive device was discovered in Manhattan, in the vicinity of West 13th Street and 6th Avenue. Public transit was halted for a few hours near the IED site, and the device was eventually rendered safe. No further information has been provided, but some reports suggest this was a false alarm.Otherwise, several bomb threats were called in to polling places around the city as the hotly-contested Mayoral election began this morning. Many different bomb threats were called in throughout New York and New Jersey, prompting the evacuation of polling places. Unrelated to the bomb threats, electronic voting machines went down in Cumberland County, New Jersey, which caused further complications on election day.Washington D.C. - This morning the White House addressed the recent court ruling on the SNAP program by stating that SNAP benefits will not be paid out until the government shutdown ends and funding is allocated for the program.Kentucky: This afternoon a catastrophic plane crash was reported at the Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville. A large shelter in place order was issued following the crash of a UPS aircraft shortly after takeoff.Analyst Comment: At the time of this report this is a developing situation, however this looks to be an extremely devastating crash. More details will come to light later on concerning casualties; right now the debris field is still on fire due to the aircraft being fully laden with fuel on takeoff. Initial reports from eyewitnesses on the ground indicate the port side engine was on fire as the aircraft was beginning to rotate, and by the time the aircraft had reached the end of the runway most of the left wing was engulfed in flame.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Overnight, a data breach of communications pertaining to the Huntingdon train stabbing attack was reported. An unnamed official in the Prime Minister's staff accidentally CC'd a journalist in an email chain that included emails containing unreleased details on the stabbing.In short, nothing particularly surprising was leaked. This error occurred due to the journalist having the same name as the person who the email was originally intended for, thus the mix-up. Perhaps the most interesting detail is that this leak highlights the stories that are being told even amongst government agencies. For instance, the non-public information that was leaked from the emails stated that the suspect (Anthony Williams) was not known to any authorities. This is interesting, because it points out that there is a bit of a communication foul up. The British Transport Police (BTP) had indeed identified Williams by name from his stabbing attack at the Pontoon Dock Station, and were actively looking for him in the day leading up to the train stabbing. At bare minimum this leak indicates that (at least in this case) no counterterrorism agencies were involved in the stabbing spree investigation that the BTP were actively pursuing at the time of the train attack.The attacker had gone on a stabbing spree for two full days prior to the train attack...three separate stabbing attacks occurred, but agencies were not talking to each other. Nor did any agency treat this stabbing spree as a series of connected attacks all perpetrated by the same person. This helps to explain the context of the leaked emails; the reason that Williams is "not known to police" is because counterterrorism agencies did not investigate his three prior st

GOLDEN HINDU IDOL 15 STORIES TALL TO BE CONSTRUCTED IN RURAL NORTH CAROLINA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-United Kingdom: On Saturday, a mass stabbing was carried out on a train bound for London from Doncaster. 10x people remain in critical condition as a result of the attack. The assailant has been identified as Anthony Williams. A separate individual who may have also been involved in some way was arrested at the scene. This individual has not been identified, but authorities have stated he is of Caribbean descent. Police also tased one man on the platform after the train arrived at the station, however this was a case of mistaken identity and the tased man was released without charge.-HomeFront-North Carolina: Local concern has emerged following plans to build a massive Hindu "temple" in the small town of Moncure, just west of Holly Springs. This extremely large and sprawling complex is planned to have a golden idol that will be roughly 155 feet tall...one foot taller than the Statue of Liberty. This project was announced earlier this year, but has gained notoriety as the construction plans move forward.Analyst Comment: Small towns in historically Christian rural areas are often targeted for the construction of golden idols due to the ease of bribing/influencing local officials to obtain permission to build commercial facilities. In this case, Moncure is an extremely small town that doesn't really engage in any zoning (they leave it to the county to decide), so it's easy to pencil-whip the re-zoning of private residential property to allow for the construction of a pagan idol that will dominate the terrain for dozens of miles. This idol is not even built yet, the area slated for it's construction is still just undeveloped land. However, (to the surprise of literally no one) it's already featured heavily in the Google search results for Moncure, NC as the top tourist destination for the town. Hindus have already spammed the reviews for the structure that doesn't exist yet, giving it top marks and praising the facility as great to visit...with the owners of the place celebrating the fake reviews of a non-existent facility, while simultaneously admitting that the facility doesn't exist yet.Washington D.C. - U.S. District Judge John J. McConnell Jr. has ordered the White House to ensure that emergency funds are used for the SNAP program, stating that "the USDA must distribute the contingency money timely, or as soon as possible, for the November 1 payments to be made".Analyst Comment: That brief description was more or less the entire order, which was oral in nature. However, a lot of other things have to click into place to make this order come to fruition, especially due to the complexities of the Judiciary ordering the Executive to do something that is technically the job of the Legislative. Despite the very obvious problem with this arrangement, the issue is now tied up in court, effectively stalling the distribution of at least some electronic deposits. However, some EBT recipients have reported getting their funds as they have before, so it's not clear as to what funds are being disbursed, or to whom.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: The train stabbing attack in the United Kingdom is one of the most significant attacks in recent British history. A Major Incident was declared and a PLATO response was initiated (which is the colloquialism for an active terror attack in progress). This Day in Legal History: Massachusetts Institutes Death Penalty for HeresyOn November 4, 1646, the Massachusetts General Court enacted a law that imposed the death penalty for heresy, marking one of the most extreme expressions of religious intolerance in early American colonial history. The law required all members of the colony to affirm the Bible as the true and authoritative Word of God. Failure to do so was not merely frowned upon—it was made a capital offense. This legislation reflected the theocratic underpinnings of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which had been established by Puritans seeking religious freedom for themselves but not necessarily for others.The Puritan leadership equated dissent with disorder, and heresy with treason against divine authority. The law was aimed particularly at groups such as Quakers, Baptists, and others who challenged orthodox Puritan theology. While it is unclear whether anyone was actually executed under this specific statute, it laid the foundation for later persecution, including the execution of Mary Dyer, a Quaker, in 1660. The law exemplifies how early colonial governments wielded both civil and religious authority in tandem.It also foreshadows the centuries-long struggle in American legal and cultural history to define the boundaries between church and state. Though the U.S. Constitution would later enshrine religious freedom in the First Amendment, this 1646 law demonstrates how precarious that freedom was in earlier periods. The harshness of the law also underscores the broader context of 17th-century Europe and its colonies, where religious uniformity was often enforced through state power. Massachusetts would gradually shift away from such punishments, but not without considerable resistance.Sam Bankman-Fried's legal team will argue before the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that his conviction for defrauding FTX customers should be overturned. The 33-year-old former crypto executive is currently serving a 25-year sentence after being found guilty in 2023 of stealing $8 billion from FTX users. His lawyers claim the trial judge unfairly excluded key evidence—specifically, information supporting Bankman-Fried's belief that FTX had sufficient assets to cover customer withdrawals. Getty had accused Stability AI of copyright infringement, claiming the AI system was trained on millions of its images without permission. However, Getty dropped the core part of the case mid-trial due to insufficient evidence about where and how the AI was trained, leaving that central legal question unresolved. The remaining claims focused on trademark infringement and secondary copyright violations.The High Court ruled that Getty partially succeeded on the trademark issue, noting Stable Diffusion sometimes generated images that included Getty's watermark. But the judge emphasized that this finding was historically narrow and of limited scope. Getty's broader copyright claim was dismissed, with the court finding that Stable Diffusion does not store or directly reproduce copyrighted works. The bill includes some regulatory provisions like machine limits, ID checks, and a centralized monitoring system, but these appear to have been crafted after the fee structure, not as foundational policy.Skill games have operated in a legal gray area since a 2023 court ruling found they don't meet the state's definition of gambling devices. That ambiguity has persisted, leaving the machines largely unregulated but widespread. Instead of clarifying the legal status of these machines and building a regulatory framework first, lawmakers now seem focused on monetizing them quickly—potentially to preempt a stricter tax plan proposed by Governor Shapiro.
