Dr. Nicole Rambo provides detailed advice on how to properly soak pelleted and textured horse feeds, hay pellets, and beet pulp, emphasizing the need to avoid nutrient loss and prevent mold and bacteria growth. She also covers the significance of monitoring soaked feed in various climates and offers tips on handling hay for metabolic horses, suggesting alternatives like tested low-NSC forages and stressing the importance of post-soaking care to ensure safety and nutritional adequacy. Hempseed has always been legal in the US for human consumption and anyone in the US can simply go to their local supermarket and pick up some hempseed oil or hemp hearts in order to fortify their nutrition.  Yet, for some reason,  we are not allowed to feed it to our horses or to our dogs to aid nutrition or reduce inflammation.  Whether or not horses and dogs are allowed to eat hempseed may seem like a trivial pursuit for some, but those who are interested in a future where hemp can eliminate plastic, paper and toxic building materials are very interested in this topic.  While hemp is exponentially faster than trees at reducing CO2 from the air (and in some locations can be grown 2-3 times per year!), today hemp stalks are too expensive to be used as a replacement for petroleum and wood based products.  However,  if the associated hempseed is able to be fed to the farm animals, the economics of using hemp stalk as a more sustainable option to replace plastics drastically shift.  Dr. Kristine Ely from Virginia Tech has done research showing that not only is hempseed oil safe for horses, but horses who were fed hempseed oil:(a) had NO cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.) contamination present in their blood (b) DID have significant increases of γ-Linolenic acid (GLA),  a unique fatty acid that is uncommon in horse's diets and which increases the horse's production of anti-inflammatory eicosanoids(c) had NO other inflammatory biomarkers influenced by treatment

I want to give horse owners a different perspective on whether to feed their horses vitamins. Most discussions on this subject discuss what diseases are prevented by supplementing with which vitamin. I will not repeat this because 1) others have done this, and 2) there needs to be more good science behind their findings. Instead, I will tell you how vitamins work, if supplementation works, and the difference between vitamins from food, food sources, and chemicals like coal tar.  Doing a thought experiment, I asked listeners if giving synthetic vitamins (and amino acids) can cause inflammation. I also ask if processed foods have more benefits to health than whole foods, identifying some unique situations where they may be indicated (soybean meal). This interview was full of great information and much laughter! Dr. Jyme Nichols and I have a fascinating discussion on equine nutrition breakthroughs and the parallels to new theories for human nutrition. Issues such as leaky gut, ulcers, inflammation and metabolic disorders have surprising connections in both horses and humans. Dr. Nichols is an ARPAS certified Professional Animal Scientist (PAS) in the Equine discipline. She is the Director of Nutrition for Bluebonnet Feeds and leads efforts behind the Stride Animal Health brand. Lest you think she is a boring scientist type, Dr. Nichols is a true cowgirl who grew up on a ranch at the border of Nebraska and South Dakota. Her family included saddle bronc riders, ropers and barrel racers. She went to college on a rodeo scholarship. After entering her graduate academic program, Dr. Nichols then assisted in coaching the team members to a national championship. In between rodeo competitions, her published research focused on managing blood glucose and insulin concentrations in horses with an oral psyllium supplement. Which sounds technical but just think about it as related to Snickers bars and Captain Crunch. Dr. Nichols’ additional research has focused on identifying equine veterinarians' educational needs in equine nutrition. Dr. Nichols has been part of the Bluebonnet Feeds team since 2011. Choosing the right diet for your horse can be a daunting task. Join our host, Michelle Anderson, as she interviews Clair Thunes, PhD, an independent equine nutritionist. You'll learn about horses' calorie requirements and how to safely change your horse's diet. Dr. Thunes also explains the differences between complete feeds, ration balancers, concentrates, and hay or forage pellets, as well as how to know your horse is getting the nutrients he or she needs. Dr. Thunes owns Summit Equine Nutrition, based in Gilbert, Arizona. She works as a consultant with owners/trainers and veterinarians across the United States and globally to take the guesswork out of feeding horses and provides services to select companies. As a nutritionist she works with all equids, from WEG competitors to Miniature donkeys and everything in between. Born in England, she earned her undergraduate degree at Edinburgh University, in Scotland, and her master’s and doctorate in nutrition at the University of California, Davis. Growing up, she competed in an array of disciplines and was an active member of the U.K. Pony Club. Today, she serves as the district commissioner for the Salt River Pony Club.

Tuffrock - Transforming Volcanic Residue For Your Horses Benefit - Episode 15 Talking About Horses with Di Denton Steve Hurley, the co-founder of TuffRock, is an interesting bloke. I met Steve at the New South Wales Hunter Horse Festival (he’s a Hunter Valley local) and we sat down and talked about his path into the horse industry, the establishment of Tuffrock and Tuffrocks’ range of products for horses, dogs, cattle and chickens. Tuffrock combines an intimate knowledge of Australian volcanic soils and the minerals they contain, with their’ own specialised method of extracting those very minerals and ensuring their bioavailabilty to animals. TuffRock was established in July 2002 following several years of extensive Research and Development, product development and test marketing. With a view to manufacturing environmentally friendly animal health products, Tuffrock takes pride in being a nutraceutical manufacturer and ensuring that there are no drugs, chemicals, biotics, enzymes or heavy metals used in their products.I've used Tuffrock products on and with my own horses and found them to be excellent.
