“The deeper truth is we act from underlying values and hopes and dreams when we become fulfilled human beings..." Today's episode features an in-depth interview with Justin Brown, founder of Ideapod, whose mission is to provide ecosystems of thought around important ideas and to raise provocative questions that aim to inspire personal growth and group-think. Justin grew up in Melbourne and was on the academic fast-track with a Bachelor's in Commerce and a Master's in International Relations. He was then accepted into a paid scholarship program in Europe for another Master's degree, spending time in both Poland and London studying economic history. Then, after three years as a financial consultant, he was accepted to the Ph.D. program for International Political Economy at the University of Warwick, where Ideapod became a side project. Justin's vision was to share important ideas outside of academia, which, to him, appeared to be "trapped in academic silos." Justin quit his doctoral studies and moved to New York City to raise funds and launch Ideapod. While the model has shifted over time, Ideapod flourishes as a personal development platform with a million monthly viewers and 100,000-plus email subscribers. Justin shares the powerful lessons from his challenges along the way and how essential it has become for him to bring his attention and focus back to the "now" and to his habits. Enjoy the episode! Are you…the REAL YOU…are you what you think or what you do? This is one of the most fought over philosophical concepts over the years. And, a recent article in IdeaPod by Justin Brown, tackles this question head on…so I thought I’d share my thoughts. Sam Harris, well-known modern philosopher and author believes along the lines of the Buddha, where your True Self is reflective in your thoughts. However, Aristotle and a number of other thinkers believe you are what you do. I believe it’s sort of a mix of both… …the true self is within you but, if you ... What is a man's role in society these days? This question seems to be coming up again and again. The rise of women and feminism, together with changes in the economy, and globalization are some of the factors cited as having had a big impact on men and their sense of where they belong in society. For a while the expectation was that men were to work and to be providers for the family, but that's not necessarily the case anymore, so where does that leave them?Men grappling with their role and trying to find a sense of purpose is also not just a personal dilemma. There is much talk that some of the political unrest happening around the world over the past decade or so is also related to this, to the changing position of men in society and this lack of purpose that many are feeling, whether they are young men still trying to figure things out, or older men who've been working and providing for years, but are seeing what they do increasingly fall out of place in the modern workplace, which is also increasingly filled by women, who are on average also more educated. You could say that everyone is after a sense of purpose, but there is a lot of talk about this with women and new roles and options and opportunities. I'd say it's generally positive talk, as women open up more paths for themselves. In fact, pushing for equality itself gives one a huge sense of purpose. But what's the deal with men? And why is there this insistence on men having to have a sense of purpose, can't they just, you know, be? We chat to two men about their experiences with purpose and how it impacts men specifically, and take the untangling from there.Host & producer Nas aka Nastaran Tavakoli-FarCo-producer Cady VogeGuests Justin Brown, co-founder of Ideapod https://www.ideapod.com/Michael MichailidisRelated links:The Gender Knot https://www.thegenderknot.com/ Music: Government Funded Weed by Black Ant (used under Creative Commons) Sourpatch by Glass Boy (used under Creative Commons)
