Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Tom Cruise. John Travolta. When I tell you that today's guest has interviewed the stars, we're not talking about any old bit player from Home and Away. And while that may sound like a pretty spectacular way to spend your time, Renee Bargh would've given it all up for the one thing that she wanted her entire life: a baby. After spending a decade from her mid twenties to her mid thirties working in tv in LA, the pandemic was the final push she needed to come home to Australian shores. Fast forward to today, and the award winning tv host is preparing to bring her second baby into the world. Here, we talk her glittery television career in LA, returning to work and a red carpet at three months postpartum, the ways in which motherhood was harder than she expected when she thought she was the most prepared person for the job, and how she's navigated hyperemesis as someone whose job it is to look and act presentable at work. From LA to back home, from a robe to a red carpet with Tom Cruise, from presenting on air to trying not to throw up backstage, Renee brings the human element to a world that we often paint as shiny.--This episode of Ready or Not is brought to you by Mumma Milla – the modern leakproof nursing brand that has quickly become a wardrobe staple in my postpartum and return to paid work journey.

#60: "Unconscious" Bias? with Adam Hahn

Adam Hahn spends a lot of time thinking about how well people know their own biases. Sure, people often refer to "implicit bias" as social biases that exist unconsciously. But do they really? How strongly can we claim we're unaware of these attitudes and is there any reason to think people can readily tell you what their gut reactions are when they encounter people of different racial, gender, and religious identities? Adam's a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bath. A few things that come up in our conversation:In the intro, I talk about the work of Russ Fazio (e.g., Fazio et al., 1986) and John Bargh (e.g., Bargh et al., 1992) looking into the automatic activation of attitudes. I also highlight Greenwald and Banaji's (1995) presentation of "implicit social cognition." (The quote about using "implicit" to refer to processes outside of awareness is from a 2001 chapter by Banaji and Tesser.) Also, big tip of the hat to Adam Hahn for helping me organize the structure of the introduction. You can take the Implicit Association Test (IAT) at "Project Implicit"Whether implicit bias is unconscious depends on how you define "unconscious" (Hahn & Goedderz, 2020)People can predict their scores on the IAT (Hahn et al., 2014; Hahn & Gawronski, 2019)People's predictions of their IAT performance is predictable (Rivera & Hahn, 2019)For details on some of the newer (unpublished as of yet) work that Adam talks about, you might enjoy this 2021 talk he gave at Université Grenoble Alpes.News clips at the top of the show were sourced from the following: NPR [1] [2], 5News, CBSNews, Devex, Christian Science Monitor, CNN, & The Young Turks. Stepping Up: COVID-19 Checkpoints and Rangatiratanga (Huia Publishers, 2021) discusses the roadside checkpoints that were set up by Māori to protect communities during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Case studies of four different checkpoints are examined, each of which looked slightly different, but all of which were underpinned by tikanga Māori. To be influential you do not require power, but wielding your influence is powerful. Vanessa Bohns, social psychologist and professor of organizational behavior at Cornell University, joins us to discuss her enticing new book “You Have More Influence Than You Think”: https://amzn.to/39vCDIN. She draws from her research to illustrate why underestimating our influence can lead us to miss opportunities or worse yet, to misuse our power. Vanessa challenges us to examine our powers of persuasion and to recognize that we have more influence than we even realize. We learn exactly why it's so hard for us to say no, even when we're uncomfortable with saying yes. And why we should focus on communicating more with people face-to-face. As with all of our episodes, we leave you with a Grooving Session discussion focusing on how we can use Vanessa's research to improve our lives, our relationships and our workplaces. As copywriters, is it possible that we can help our prospects use their own self-control to buy more?  The article discussed in today's episode focuses on self-control and the simulation theory. Researchers analyzed two groups of participants' self-control and ability to complete a simple task; one group was invited to imagine themselves in a scenario where self-control was involved and the other group was to read the scenario. The results revealed that taking the perspective of others depleted participants' self-control and exhausted their mental capacity. Participants who were tasked with reading were inspired by the self-control demonstrated in the scenarios.  These research findings are relevant to us as copywriters in many ways but can be so easily manipulated. When we're aiming to target our prospects' self-control mechanisms, we must ensure we maintain integrity and that we truly believe in the product or service our clients offer. Similar to the findings of the article, we can also focus on providing our prospects with a target to chase or something to aspire to by speaking to the ‘after' state of our prospects.  What To Look For In This Episode: How to effectively use your prospects' self-control as a tool in your copy. Today we welcome back a great friend of the podcast John Bargh Professor of social psychology at Yale University I always really enjoy my time with John and the opportunity to pick the brains of one of the most influential minds in psychology today. John’s book ‘Before you know it’ is essential reading. In which he goes into so many fascinating avenues to explore how our unconscious mind navigates the world. How we are so much influenced by our surroundings. How we can be triggered into action by other people How words written in our office can affect our motivations. To become better acquainted with your unconscious mind is to be better armed with the challenges of life We look into ways that you can better arrange your world How you can increase your motivation to do what YOU want to do with your life Not to be just carried away with the whims and wishes of your unconscious programmes We talk about John’s biggest influences in his long and distinguished career The effect of lockdown on our mental well being What the future may hold for us post covid A really interesting session with a fascinating man John A. Bargh is a social psychologist currently working at Yale where he has formed the Automaticity in Cognition, Motivation, and Evaluation (ACME) Laboratory. John’s work focuses on automaticity and unconscious processing as a method to better understand social behaviour  as well as philosophical topics such as free will. Much of John’s work investigates whether actions and behaviours thought to be under volitional control may result from automatic interpretations of and reactions to external stimuli, such as words. Conventional wisdom is that you should get a physical exam every year with your doctor. Should you really? This episode begins by exploring who should and maybe who should not get an annual check-up and why. http://www.shape.com/lifestyle/mind-and-body/theres-no-evidence-you-need-annual-physical-exam-say-doctors Your unconscious mind affects your thoughts and behaviors in ways you can’t imagine - because that part of your mind is unconscious. That is the message from John Bargh, Yale professor of psychology and author of the book Before You Know It: The Unconscious Reasons We Do What We Do (https://amzn.to/2JLKN2b). For example, feeling physically warm actually makes you more socially warm; feeling fear makes you think more politically conservative – it really is fascinating. Listen as professor Bargh takes you on a tour of your unconscious mind. Kitchens get messy from lingering cooking smells to fruit flies and a million other things. Listen as I reveal some great ways to solve common kitchen problems you probably haven’t heard before. http://food52.com/blog/14173-7-kitchen-cleaning-tricks-that-really-work How did Facebook, Amazon, Google and other big companies get so big so fast? The answer is “blitzscaling.” It is a recent phenomenon in business that was named and identified by LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and entrepreneur Chris Yeh in their new book Blitzscaling: The Lightning-Fast Path to Building Massively Valuable Companies (https://amzn.to/2D4HW33). Chris Yeh joins me to explain how blitzscaling works and others in business can use the same principles. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! David Melnikoff studies how our goals affect how we feel about things. When stuff helps us reach a goal, we like it…even if it’s not the kind of thing we’d ordinarily like. In our conversation, we talk about what psychologists mean when they talk about people’s “attitudes,” how goals can affect those attitudes, and why all of this means that people can sometimes come to like immoral people. Things that come up in this episode:What is an “attitude”? (For more on this concept, check out this webpage.)“Instrumentality” and “action valence” affect how we feel about someone in the moment (Melnikoff, Lambert, & Bargh, 2019)Morality isn’t always a valued quality in other people (Melnikoff & Bailey, 2018) Check out my new audio course on Knowable: "The Science of Persuasion."For a transcript of this episode, visit: http://opinionsciencepodcast.com/episode/liking-what-helps-you-with-david-melnikoff/ Learn more about Opinion Science at http://opinionsciencepodcast.com/ and follow @OpinionSciPod on Twitter.

Aussies will know her as a host on The Voice but prior to that she’s been living in USA for the past 10 years and a host on Extra, she’s won 2 Emmy awards, been linked to dating Brad Pitt (which we talk about) and interviewed the greats from Oprah to George Clooney! And after all that she’s so grounded and genuine. Soon as the podcast ended I was like “can we be friends?” Very cool human. Reneé has recently relocated to Byron Bay due to Covid and she couldn’t be more at home, this is where she was raised. KilderBargh, J. Welcome to November beautiful people, this year has just flown by I can't believe we're already thinking about Christmas! Still on a total wedding high and getting used to the new name - we're actually in Byron Bay this week for our mini moon so it seemed the perfect week to release this episode with Mullumbimby girl, Renée Bargh. I was lucky enough to record this one in Renée's beautiful home in Venice Beach when I was in LA on the way to Necker Island a few weeks ago and she had literally just come out of the ocean, what an absolute goddess. Despite an incredibly successful career over in the US, she remains a down to earth, Aussie beach baby whose family and friends mean more to her than anything. Having always lived for the performing arts, presenting was not Renée's first or even second love. After studying at Brent Street, Renée first set her sights on a career in dancing but then got picked up by Sony as part of a girl band (very originally called Girlband). It was a happy accident that got her into presenting with National Bingo Night on Seven then Surfari on Channel 9, followed by Channel V which then led her to her current position in LA as host on Extra TV alongside co host Mario Lopez and this is her ninth year on the job. Holding her own in Hollywood on the most fancy of red carpets, Renée's charm and talents have won her TWO Emmy awards that you'll hear I made her whip out during our chat. She speaks candidly about making it, homesickness and finding balance and I hope you enjoy as much as I did. + Follow Renée at @reneebargh + More about our videographers, Moon and Back Co + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

John Bargh is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on the science of priming and the unconscious mind. The James Rowland Professor of Psychology, Professor of Management at Yale University, and founder of Yale's Automaticity in Cognition, Motivation, and Evaluation (ACME) lab, John has conducted revolutionary research focused on non-conscious drivers of human behavior for more than three decades. He has written nearly 200 scholarly research and theoretical papers—for which he has received major awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, induction into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Distinguished Career Award from the American Psychological Association—and is the author of one of Business Insider's outstanding reads of 2017, Before You Know It: The Unconscious Reasons We Do What We Do. In this episode, John dives into the research behind priming and how certain stimuli can shape our perception and behavior. Listen in to learn how images and strategic cues influence us, what we can do to counteract negative priming effects, and ways you can set up intentional primes in your own life to create positive outcomes. That is the message from John Bargh, Yale professor of psychology and author of the book Before You Know It: The Unconscious Reasons We Do What We Do (https://amzn.to/2JLKN2b). For example, feeling physically warm actually makes you more socially warm; feeling fear makes you think more politically conservative – it’s just amazing. Listen as professor Bargh takes you on a tour of your unconscious mind. A lot of things can get messy in your kitchen – from lingering cooking smells to fruit flies and a million other things.
