This week I share a great technique that eliminates anxiety by using the difference between probability and possibility. Have you ever gotten yourself all worked up about something that might happen and realize after that you wasted a lot of time and energy overreacting to what you “thought” was going to happen? Speaking in public?Confronting someone?Health issues? What if I told you there is a way to eliminate anxiety by simply knowing the difference between probability and possibility? This tool is a mindset technique based on a simple understanding of knowing the difference between Probability and Possibility. In the show I talk about: Living on a golf course and how being hit by a golf ball is a great example of possibility and probabilityHow someone’s reaction to walking along a golf course says a lot about their mindsetThe two part formula for accurately assessing the chances of something really happening Comments / Questions: tony@javabud.com Website: Javabud Youtube Channel #possibilityvsprobability #takingrisks #whatismeasuredrisk #riskandsuccess #eliminateanxiety #eliminatefear #lifestrategy #biglifedecisions #makingtherightdecision #howtomakeupyourmind #empowermentcoaching #thejavabud #tonydufresne
Are you constantly chasing positive emotions in a maze right now? Trying to force your way through? Running up against the same dead ends then wasting time by getting down on yourself or upset then projecting that energy onto someone else? Then this week’s episode is for you. It’s a story about how my six year old granddaughter taught me a very powerful lesson in confidence and finding my flow by schooling me in a corn maze. A big problem I see and share with my clients is that we end up being our own worst enemy. Our high expectations lead to a lot of disappointment, anxiety and anger especially when we feel like we’re stuck and don’t have the answer to move forward. That’s why watching my granddaughter crush the maze was so powerful and a good reminder of how we can harness our inner, unshakeable confidence, tap into our flow and get things done. In the show I talk about: The curse of the driven, successful person and how to tell if you have itHow a six year old’s brain is so effective at completing challengesThe formula to stop overthinking and becoming more efficient in getting things doneWhat is Stoic Flow and how it can help you become unstuck?A Call to Action that any six year old can do Questions/Comments: tony@javabud.com Youtube Channel: TheJavaBud Javabud.com #unshakeableconfidence #havingmoreconfidence #actlikeachild #becomingunstuck #gowiththeflow #stoicism #stoicphilosophy #tonydufresnephd #thejavabud #philosophicalcounseling
In this week’s podcast episode I offer up proven ways to turn your Covid isolation frown upside down. With the colder weather limiting outdoor activities and less sun there will be higher degrees of isolation anxiety. The techniques I talk about are basic Stoic Philosophy concepts that have been successfully used by astronauts and researchers that spend months in isolation. Highlights of the show include: Advice from an astronaut who spent 11 months in space then came home and had to cope with the Covid isolation Solutions from Australian researcher David Knoff who spent a year in a remote camp in Antarctica The power in knowing the 3rd Quarter Phenomenon and how that helped a researcher survive two years in the Biosphere 2 bubble And finally, how to use the pillars of Stoic philosophy to cope and survive with our Covid isolation over the next few months Remember, anxiety is not caused by the circumstance, it’s caused by your thoughts and reactions TO the circumstance. This week I talk about how effective Covid is at determining whether a person is an aware, empathetic member of society or a toddler. Since the virus is still very unpredictable, none of us know if we could possibly die if we get it. So when someone successfully fights off the Coronavirus, there’s a sense of relief. And you would think they would also gain a higher level of empathy and awareness about how important it is to wear a mask and keep your distance. But unfortunately, there are A LOT of Covid survivors out there that don’t pass the character test. So, I wanted to share the following thoughts in the show about: How Covid does a good job at exposing someone’s core character traitThe Curse of Awareness and the battle with high expectations and abject disappointmentHow the Toddler Mentality has been given a voice and how destructive it has beenHow the virus has tested my Stoic Philosophy foundation andThe transformational power of Strategic Surrender Comments / Questions: tony@javabud.com Website: www.javabud.com #covid19survivor #covidsurvivor #coronavirussurvivor #toddlermentality #perspectiveandempathy #livingwithhighexpectations #stoicphilosophy #usingstoicphilosophy #focusandflowcoach #leadershipcoaching #javabud #tonydufresne
This week’s podcast episode I share my life with Covid-19 over the past two weeks. Because this virus attacks the central nervous system, it’s not just the physical symptoms, but people also have to deal with significant mental, emotional and spiritual issues. And even though I would be considered a “mild” case, I have been dealing with all of those issues. So, I thought I’d share with you my covid experience including: All the precautions I took and how I eventually got it from a very unlikely placeMy first symptoms and why I thought I should get testedHow my life changed immediately after finding out I was positiveWhat physical symptoms I have and the typical symptoms I didn’t getThe most frustrating part about the physical symptomsThe psychological / mental stress that comes with battling the CoronavirusThe new study from the Lancet that sheds light on the significant unseen impact of the virusThe philosophical / spiritual questions that come up when dealing with Covid-19 Lastly, I would like to share my thoughts on how to process this virus if you get it or how to help someone you know that has or will unfortunately contract Covid. Don’t be fooled by that Orange Psychopath currently (but not for long) occupying the White House, this virus is serious and can impact you on a number of levels. This week’s podcast is about two semi-woke people coming to terms with the current state of divisiveness and thinking out loud about what we need to do now that the election is over. Because, once again, my show is about a touchy social topic, there are a lot of people that will never get this post because our social media platform friends can discern between constructive dialogue and hate speech. That being said, I hope, maybe after listening, you would be kind enough to post yourself or at least share with one other person, because the time is now to take real action to get back to becoming a united country. And, for those of you not living in the U.S., inside the show you will find a very satisfying Humble Pie Eating Contest. In the show, my good friend and author of the popular “Mama Love Movement” blog, Mariah Peric, talk about: How a win is really not a win The power of the Fear of Change and how we can change thatWhat Genie is out of what bottle and why that’s a good thingHow a country built on individuality needs to think like a team player in order to surviveWhat we can all do to start the healing process, become more woke and help the wokeless Questions and/or Comments: tony@javabud.com
This show is all about Why so many people don't care about facts and How we can change that. I continue to be in shock and disappointed about the current ideology gap that exists in my country right now. It couldn't be more obvious that one side is built entirely on lies and having a group of followers that are perfectly OK in a world where facts don't matter. Like I say in the show, I just want to get back to doing podcasts about philosophy and better relationships and balance and awareness. But, given the very scary reality of living in a cult nation and the chance it may continue, I feel it's my duty as a philosopher to continue to scream, "The Emperor Has No Clothes!" So, this show is all about Why so many people don't care about facts and How we can change that. In the show I talk about: The biggest reason why facts don't matterThe effect of the Technological Revolution on facts and scienceWhy Emotional Intelligence is so importantThe Power of Changing Your MindWhy the people that need the most help are voting to stay in the system that is working against themHow to change someone's mind without using facts Questions or comments: tony@javabud.com #factsdontmatter #whyfactsdontmatter #2020election #mostimportantelection #virtuouslife #successcoach #balancecoach #tonydufresne #javabud

In this week’s podcast episode our favorite man-made monster, Frankenstein, explains the movie, “The Social Dilemma”. Social media was initially created for good. It was a better and easier way to connect and also a great way to share information and knowledge but, unfortunately, just like Frankenstein’s monster, what was created for good can sometimes be bad. Which brings me back to the “Social Dilemma” because It does an amazing job at exposing the underlying problems of our current social media platforms. The show also goes into great detail about the psychological, physical and philosophical manipulation that is happening to you and me by just scrolling through our news feed. The message is plain and simple: We all need to be aware of what’s happening. Aware of how algorithms, newsfeeds and “Likes” are slowly eating away at the fabric of our society and how we can get things back on track. In the show, I expose: What is happening to us psychologicallyWhat is happening to us physicallyAnd, what is happening to us philosophically The first step in change is AWARENESS. The second step is Understanding. The last step is taking ACTION. I have included a number of reference links including a great post in the Stanford University Encyclopedia of Philosophy. In addition, I list a number of things we can do to shift the focus of social media away from the bad and more towards its original objective, which is a positive source for connection and knowledge. This week’s podcast episode is all about Gaslighting Why you need to know what it isWho does itHow it’s doneWho it affectsWhat to do if you notice it in your life or in the life of a close friend or family member If you don’t know anything about it, Gaslighting is one of the worst forms of emotional abuse that one person can do to another. It’s used by Narcissists to slowly manipulate someone into questioning what they think and believe. It’s gradually eating away at someone’s confidence, just like that saying about boiling a frog. If you turn the heat up slowly, he won’t notice until it’s too late. This technique is very effective at destroying someone emotionally by creating confusion, anxiety and a false reality that gives the gaslighter ultimate power over their victim's life. This is a big topic right now because here in the U.S., the entire country is being gaslighted. And yet, there are still millions of people who don’t see it happening and how much damage it is doing. So, I figured this show is a good opportunity to explain everything about Gaslighting. And more importantly, what to look out for if you suspect a gaslighter is trying to manipulate you or someone you care for. Lastly, I provide a number of resources and options to help a person break free of a Gaslighter in their life including: The Domestic Violence Hotline Resource list posted by positivepsychology.com As far as the country is concerned, it’s pretty simple, we just have to VOTE! This week's podcast episode is about TRUTH What is Truth?Which opinion is the truth? How to I find the truth buried in so many lies? There are so many ways people can bend and manipulate the truth to confuse and control you. This can happen in society as a whole or in a family or with a significant other. That is why it is so important to know how to find the truth. And the best way to do that is by developing your CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS. The steps are not hard and you can start using them right away in order to Understand what is really the truthBe more in control of your thoughts and perceptions of the worldHave a clearer vision of what your life is and where you want to go Important topics having to do with finding the Truth include: What is False Equivalence and how it is used to manipulateWhat is Gaslighting and why you need to know the signsWhat is a False Dichotomy and why it paints a false picture of realityHow to effectively use Critical Thinking Skills in your relationships and in life Questions or comments: tony@javabud.com #whatisthetruth #whatistrue #falseequivalency #thetruthwillsetyoufree #criticalthinking #developingcriticalthinkingskills #falsedichotomy #gaslighting #manipulationtools #podcastersofinstagram #empowermentcoach #womensempowermentcoach #importantlifeskills #signsofgaslighting #tonydufresne #javabud
This week's podcast episode is about our current anxiety coming from an out of control world and how to feel better by venting our frustrations the right way. The world currently feels out of control, which is bad for humans because we REALLY need to feel like we have some control in our lives. And because we've given up so much control and significantly changed our lives in the process to fight this invisible virus, it's creating a lot of anxiety, fear, anger, depression, sadness and divisiveness. Interestingly enough, Stoic philosophy was born out of the same kind of political and social upheaval including dealing with the plague. So, the show is about taking the lessons learned from those philosophers and putting them to use today in order to help us: Accept what we can change and what we can't Be able to put things in a more realistic perspective Set up Venting Boundaries with our loved ones so our emotional dumping doesn't drag them down in the processBetter communicate our intentions with our significant others to avoid unnecessary arguments Become stronger, more effective leadersDetermining if and when you need to talk to a professional When a large group of people are going through a crisis together, it's important to understand people process the feelings of being out of control differently. Which is why it's so important to fall back on the basic teachings of Stoic Philosophy in order to guide you towards a more controlled, calm and balanced life. Has the isolation, anxiety and uncertainty from the pandemic got you thinking you're not where you should be in your life? The initial shock has worn off and the new reality is forcing us to look at things from a different perspective. Relationships are being tested like never before, and jobs or career direction is being looked at from a different perspective. The space, or lack thereof, brought on by the pandemic response has exposed both the solid parts and the flaws in the life you have built around you up to this point. So, it's natural to start to question your choices, asking yourself, "Is this relationship or job working for me?" So, the show today is about making a big decision and changing your life direction. I talk about a recent research study by Steven Levitt (Freakanomics) that provided some fascinating results from 20,000 people making a big life decision based on a virtual coin flip. Other stuff I talk about include: The Art of Strategic QuittingWhy you should Pull the Trigger and make the changeHow to make a huge life change and not blow up your life in the processThe two big things that keep you stuck and unable to follow through on making a big life change As Albert Einstein said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change" Comments, questions or concerns : tony@javabud.com Website: javabud.com Be the Change You Want to See #bethechange #makingabiglifedecision #cantdecide #atacrossroads #shouldistayorshouldigo #timeforanewrelationship #signsofabadrelationship #signsofabadjob #coinflip #makeadecision #podcastersofinstagram #instaadvice #womensempowerment #empowermentcoach #professionalwomencoach #tonydufresne #thejavabud
This week's podcast episode exposes the secret to better relationships by taking a look at how they are teaching their kids in Finland. The show is my way of paying tribute to Sir Ken Robinson, Education Expert author and speaker, who sadly passed away this week. You may be familiar with Dr. Robinson because he has the most watched Ted Talk of all Time (watch it here). Dr. Robinson's entire life was dedicated to revolutionizing ineffective and outdated systems of teaching in schools and one of his favorite comparisons of bad versus good systems was the United States system versus the system in Finland. As I watched this comparison, I realized the school system in Finland is structured on four basic concepts that can also be applied to any relationship. In other words, the teaching principles in Finland provide the perfect guide for any of your relationships, including: Significant other relationshipsFriendsFamily membersWorkSchoolAnd ESPECIALLY your relationship with yourself The four easy-to-follow steps provide a perfect guide will help you to: Remember what's important in the grand scheme of thingsKeep things in their proper perspectiveEnrich your life experience and the lives of everyone you have in your life The final Call To Action is a plea from me to remind yourself everyday of these principles and take them with you through your fulfilling life experience. This week's Surrounded by Idiots Radio Podcast episode is all about finding a solution or moving past a big obstacle in your life by making a small shift in your PERSPECTIVE. Most of my clients come to me with the same issue: They feel stuck and frustrated about where they are at in their life and have no idea how to get unstuck and continue to expand into the life of their dreams. The good news is that there is a clear solution and it has to do with Expectations and Perspective In the show I use the story about how a blue dumpster at your favorite beach and how it can explain you being stuck in your situation. In order to become unstuck and more clear on where you want to go and what you want to do in your life, you must first realize what you are focusing on and how that is keeping you stuck. As I sat down to do my usual weekly research for a show topic, I came across a story about a man and a butterfly and realized we actually need the struggle but NOT the PAIN that comes with it. So, How do we accept the struggle and get rid of the pain that usually comes with it? Think of how much you can learn about yourself and others when you are not consumed by the stress and frustration and depression and anger and binge drinking that has come about as a “reaction” to the current upending of our universe. The pandemic has taken away a piece of everything that we have used to identify ourselves – to feel connected with ourselves and others. People are dealing with more than one big life issue at the same time relationship challenges family challengesfinancial issueswork or school challengesand, most importantly, health issues (both physical and mental) With current research showing that struggling actually improves your brain function, the key is to find a way to separate the pain of the struggle from the benefits of the struggle. So, with the help of current research and a story about a Man and a Butterfly, there is a way to take the pain out of the struggle and keep the good parts that: Broadens perspectiveStrengthens character (determination, grit, resolve)Builds confidenceCreates clarity that helps you prioritize the components of your lifeCreates more fulfillment Finally, my Call to Action to you is to use the techniques I talk about to reframe and refocus your mind so you can get maximum benefit from your struggles.
