Friends, countryfolk and city scoundrels; hello. This was an extra special cake and ice cream episode of Graventown because I got to talk with someone I deeply respect and admire (and whom I have such a lovely conversational shorthand with)  - Ron Hawkins. He's not just a sweet musical pal, incredible painter and past touring partner of the Gravenator. No, no, friends. Don't box him in. Ron Hawkins has long been revered as one of Canada's greatest contemporary singer-songwriters. As lead singer/multi-instrumentalist and main songwriter of Canada's legendary Lowest of the Low, Ron Hawkins has enjoyed many accolades through the years: In 1996, 2000 and again in 2005, Chart Magazine honoured the group's 1991 debut album, Shakespeare My Butt, with spots in the top 10 of the Top 100 Canadian Albums of All Time. In 2000 and once again in 2015, Hawkins was voted Songwriter of the Year by NOW Magazine's reader's poll.  Also in 2000, Ron received Toronto station 102.1 The Edge's Lifetime Achievement Award. And in that same year, Ron Hawkins and the Rusty Nails won album of the year at The Indie Awards, for their album Crackstatic. In 2008 The Lowest of the Low was inducted into the Canadian Indie Rock Hall of Fame and awarded gold records for Shakespeare My Butt. It was a delight to roll around in the wild grey matter of this  multi-project/multi-faceeted lovely guy's brainpan for almost an hour. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did chatting with the ever-soaring/ever-seeking Hawkman.Catch me in a town near you (as I head out on tour soon with Stephen Stanley from The Lowest of the Low and The Stephen Stanley Band) by visting my website to see where I'm playing. If people can hate for no reason, I can love for no reason - and I love you. Thanks for stopping by Graventown. Yer always welcome here. Metal Debate Album Review - The Judas Paradox (God Dethroned)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Welcome to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast, talking about the Dutch blackened death metal band God Dethroned with their 12th studio album The Judas Paradox. While this band certainly has its slight black metal vibes, I've always seen them as more of a melodic death metal band. Their guitar riffs have always been calm and groovy. Two years ago, God Dethroned announced they had switched record labels to sign with Rising Phoenix Music for their next full-length. Fast forward to about two months ago when they released another new song titled "Rat Kingdom". This time around I became very excited because the new song seemed to be leagues superior to the previous single they dropped two years ago. The 2nd single released happens to be both the album title track and the first song on the album. I gotta mention the use of choir in the mix. It's a fantastic addition and sounds completely new. "The Hanged Man" is a song that kicks some serious ass with its Deicide vibes. The layered vocals make it sound extra demonic and it even reminds me of the song "Conquered By Sodom". There's also an old school sounding guitar solo on this one. It's one of the shorter songs but it's definitely a standout. Moving on we have an interlude track labeled as "Black Heart" which is only 51 seconds long. It's a dissonant choir practicing their vowels with church bells ringing. But it leads straight into that song that I mentioned earlier called "Asmodeus". This time I really paid attention to this song so I could absorb every note being played. I wanted to really study this one to see if my opinion of this song would change. The results? When I compared this album version of the track to the music video, there weren't any changes made in the sound mixing. It still sounded like the one and only stale track this band has ever made. It felt soulless compared to every banger this band has produced in the past 27 years. I guess a dud was bound to happen sooner or later, although it did sound better than I remembered. Maybe because this time I had a clear head. "Kashmir Princess" is another song where I remember the riff. As monotonous as it was, I was slightly reminded of one of their earlier works. Not saying that Dave Meester had recycled any riffs but I did get the "Rusty Nails" feeling, albeit, not as heavy. The next track really picks up the pace again to the God Dethroned we all wanted. "Hubris Anorexia" begins with three long screams that are layered in succession. It's here where I have to give both Henri and Dave credit for their winding guitar efforts. Dave also continues to show off his skills as a shredder in "The Eye of Providence". "Hailing Death" is another banger that will make you shout "Hailing Death" every time they say it throughout the song's first minute. This one has another gorgeous guitar riff at the halfway point of the track. Too bad it doesn't last long. It does make a very brief return towards the end of the song which fits as a neat little outro. "Broken Bloodlines" wastes absolutely no time going hard and fast from the first fucking second! The speed of the guitar chugs are aggressively heavy and will make any Taylor Swift fan's head explode. And finally we come to the last song on the album "War Machine". When I saw this song title, I automatically assumed it was a Black Sabbath cover but then I thought, wait a minute, Six Feet Under already did a cover of that. As I listened to this song, I figured out right away that this is an original song by God Dethroned that simply has a name that has been used before. The song is okay, but not their best work. I feel like "Hailing Death" should've been the last track because it had the audio fade out at the end. I feel like it would've worked a lot better. So what's the verdict? God Dethroned has never had a bad album and The Judas Paradox isn't their first. It is not a disappointment by any means. I'm going to rate The Judas Paradox a 7.5/10.

The fire has burned over 75000 acres in the Tahoe and Eldorado National Forests. With $250 of matching funds from The Mile 99, our listeners and community members brought the total up to nearly $900! This Christmas season, as we navigate the hubris of flying reindeer, jolly old elves and a little drummer boy let’s not forget the true meaning of Christmas. Let the beautiful lights reminds us that Jesus is the Light of the world and the evergreen trees shall symbolize our hope of eternal life. Underneath the trees will be beautifully wrapped gifts, but the greatest gift of all was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

An interactive hologram of the solar system? Virtual reality has the potential to transform the classroom and how we learn everything from history to astronomy to engineering. A unique local partnership between Oregon Story Board, Intel and Clackamas Community College received a prestigious grant from Microsoft to create and test an educational curriculum for the company's mixed reality Hololens, which allows users to see and interact with holograms laid over the real world. They found that the potential to help students understand complex systems like the automatic transmission was stunning.opbmusic Session With Tank and the Bangas - 30:53Thousands of bands entered NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest this year, but the judges said the answer was clear: The New Orleans band Tank and the Bangas. Filmed in a classroom, the video for their song “Quick” schooled us with infectious joy and introduced viewers all around the world to the band’s funk-soul-spoken-word style and the rapid-fire storytelling of Tarriona “Tank” Ball.Playwright's Estate Says "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" Can't Be Performed With A Black Actor - 39:17This month, a Portland Production of "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" by Edward Albee made headlines — without an actor setting foot on-stage. A Portland producer had planned to stage the play this fall, casting an African-American actor, Damien Geter, in one of the four lead roles. However, as Albee was notoriously strict about casting, his estate delivered an ultimatum: cast a white actor in the role or lose the rights to the production. The producer Michael Streeter cancelled the play. The Portland Clown Who Inspired The Simpsons - 48:25And now... a blast from Portland’s past. OPB digital producer John Rosman recently produced a birthday video tribute to an icon: the entertainer who helped to inspire Krusty the Clown from "The Simpsons." Rusty Nails was a much-loved staple in the Portland entertainment community back in his day, and, despite his dangerous name, nothing like the depressed, alcoholic Krusty.

Ron Hawkins, front man to Lowest of the Low, Rusty Nails and the Do Good Assassins joins us to talk about his double bill - Planet of the Apes and Night of the Hunter. Okay - so, we’re playing this one a bit early. Lowest of the Low is getting back together to perform at the Hillside Festival in Guelph July 14 and they’re releasing a long awaited Low album, Do The Right Now - and in terms of publicity — we should hold off on this podcast until then. But waiting is a lot to ask of any a Hawkins fan especially with two odd and edgy classic films tapping into a history of gangsters, bank robbers and a band that actually thought jogging and abstinence might be a good formula for creativity. Don’t worry, Ron. We’ll be repeating this one in time for the album, guaranteed.

NOW Magazine's song writer of the year for 2015 is evidence that Ron Hawkins is still a talent to be reckoned with. As a founding member of Lowest of the Low, Ron found huge success in the early 90's with the bands first release "Shakespeare my Butt." Because of the band's do-it-yourself (DIY) ethics, they were able to basically write their own distribution deal with a major label based on the success of the first release. Since then Ron put together other bands including "Ron Hawkins and the Rusty Nails" and "Ron Hawkins and the Do Good Assassins" and has been releasing albums for over 20 years. His recent release it with the Do Good Assassins called "Garden Songs." I had to start this interview off by asking Bob what a Rusty Nail was (the reference on his site was to a cocktail, not an actual nail that was sitting out in the rain and got rusty :-)). A rusty nail of course is a cocktail (you'll have to listen to the interview to find out what's actually in a Rusty Nail (I've become kind of a skirt about hard liquor, so I don't think I'll be trying one anytime soon). This was just one of the fun little tidbits I picked up from Bob's "About" page, which I always check out before I'm going to interview someone, regardless of how well I may know the person (speaking of which, when was the last time you reviewed and updated your "About" page? I think mine is in for an update soon!). BobWP (we'll just say Bob for the rest of the post) and I had connected on Twitter through the #GenesisWP hashtag sometime earlier this year. It was when a conversation started about connecting with other Genesis enthusiasts at WordCamp San Francisco that I got to connect more with Bob, and of course in person at WordCamp SF (the dinner out with everyone was definitely the highlight of WordCamp SF for me).  As soon as Bob and I started chatting while at WordCamp I knew I wanted to have him on the podcast! Like everyone else I've interviewed I had to ask Bob about his story and what lead him to a business focusing on WordPress and training. Many of my interviewees have had a previous 'career' or experience in Web Design, but Bob's background stemmed from owning his own design company (print design) that he owned with his wife. He got into WordPress when he realized everything was moving away from print and with his love of learning and teaching he stepped into WordPress. *Fun Side Note* One of my subscribers just let me know that she took her first WordPress class from BobWP! And now she has a full WordPress business herself, so I'd say that's a pretty great testament to Bob's teaching skills!) Bob still works for himself and his wife works at home along side him, which I would guess not many people can do successfully and stay together... Bob and his wife have done this for years and have clearly made it work. Oh... and did I mention that Bob and his wife live on an island in the state of Washington? Yep! And somehow he still manages to network and connect locally. When I asked Bob to share something fun about himself, it just confirmed what I thought about him when I met him, that he's a great guy and does more than his fair share of giving back. And no, I'm not going to tell you. :-) You have to listen to the interview to find out what Bob's 'fun fact' is! Make sure to stop by Bob's site and connect with him on Twitter (he's pretty active on twitter), you won't be disappointed. Links from this episode BobWP Online Bob on Twitter
