S6 E14 Kim Mooney on “In an Instant” I stood quietly, looking out the window on a Thursday morning in May 2018. The sky was clear and bright, that crystal-clear blue we so rarely get on the West Coast. Not a cloud in the sky. As I took a sip of my tea, the air filled with the scream of sirens. The shrill sound of the fire trucks and ambulance drew closer and closer. Suddenly the vehicles were in front of my house. They stopped, lights flashing. Men were jumping from the vehicles before they completely stopped, running toward the house directly across the street. I froze in my spot and watched, fascinated in the moment by these running action figures. Within minutes they were back on the sidewalk. In that instant I knew something bad had happened. I ran. Kim Mooney “In An Instant: Stories of Resilience and Courage” Welcome to Tea Toast & Trivia. Thank you for listening in. I am your host Rebecca Budd, and I am looking forward to sharing this moment with you. I am delighted and thrilled that my long-time friend, Kim Mooney has joined me on Tea Toast & Trivia to discuss her new book, “In an Instant – Stories of Resilience and Courage.” Kim's career has been an eclectic one, moving between teaching and hospital administration and back to teaching. With Kim's first published story in 1970 came a prize – a typewriter. A few short stories and a series of poems were written on that typewriter and then it was set aside in a drawer. Her first book, Hidden Daughter Secret Sister; A Story of Adoption, was published in 2020. Thank you for joining Kim and me on Tea Toast & Trivia. And a special thank you, Kim, for sharing the profound and life-affirming stories of nine ordinary people who chose to live extraordinary lives with courage and determination. As always, Kim, your candour and compassion come together to encourage a deeper appreciation and recognition that life is precious and worth living. “In An Instant” is available on The FriesenPress Book Store and Amazon. Edwin Land unveiled the world's first instant camera to the Optical Society of America on 21st February, 1947. Snapping a quick black-and-white selfie, Land astonished onlookers as the image emerged within 60 seconds. Despite its initial high price and complex development process, Polaroid cameras became a sensation, selling out on their first day of release in 1948. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Land's inspiration came during a family vacation; consider why Steve Jobs and other Silicon Valley entrepreneurs have looked to Land for inspiration ever since; and recall Polaroid's disastrous pivot into ‘instant movies', Polavision, in 1977… Further Reading: • ‘Inside the company that gave the world instant photography' (FT, 2017): https://www.ft.com/content/d76d5f44-5088-11e7-bfb8-997009366969 • ‘Instant - The Story of Polaroid, By Christopher Bonanos' (Princeton Architectural Press, 2012): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Instant/VgyuGmMZ7iIC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Instant:+A+Cultural+History+of+Polaroid+by+Christopher+Bonanos&printsec=frontcover • ‘Apple & Polaroid's Intertwined Legacy' (In An Instant, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOzdMkMMpR0 Love the show? What if I could GUARANTEE you feel happier, have better relationships, and achieve more in your life faster? You can start today…this instant…with just one small shift in focus. In this episode, I share the MOST powerful trick to change the trajectory of your life…and you can use it IN AN INSTANT.It's the same exact trick Tony Robbins used to turn his life around years ago. It was so powerful that, while driving, Tony had to pull his car off the side of the road to write it down. Everything changed after that.
For a girl named Faith, she lived a life where there was little of it. At just three years old her first memory was her house being raided by the police. Her Father was heavily addicted to all manner of drugs and she never remembers a time he was sober. Whenever the chaos and madness would catch up to him, his answer was to move her mom and two brothers to another state or another city for a fresh start. Unfortunately, bound by the same habits and decisions the trajectory of their lives would end back in chaos. Domestic Violence and Emotional Neglect was par for the course in her life. Her Mother was terrified to stand up for herself because of the threats he made, her answer was to work hard and pay the bills. Faith was hopeful for a moment when her Father ended up in prison, but alcoholism stepped in and brought things back to chaos. As Faith grew up she began to wonder how her life could be different, how she could find fulfillment: maybe a steady relationship, maybe a baby of her own? After a lifetime of chaos her answer came and everything changed IN AN INSTANT. Don't forget to share our show, follow us, and leave us a review! In 2006, Lee Woodruff's husband Bob Woodruff —a prominent ABC news anchor at the time— was severely injured while reporting on the war in Iraq. Immediately, life changed for their family and Lee began to document everything, partially as a recounting of events for Bob if he survived and partially as a history for their four children if he didn't. Lee talks with Zibby about what life was like while writing her 2007 book, In An Instant, and what life has been like for her, Bob, and their family in the years since its publication.Purchase a copy on Amazon or Bookshop.Amazon: https://amzn.to/3cbEOTJBookshop: https://bit.ly/3wMXqRQ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

After decades of preparation, Bob Woodruff was offered his dream job: the anchor chair at ABC World News Tonight. But less than two months later he was hit by a bomb in Iraq, incurred massive head trauma, and spent 36 days in a coma fighting for his life. When he finally woke up, the famous journalist with a photographic memory could no longer remember the names of his four young children. While Bob eventually regained many of his physical and cognitive abilities, his life and career were forever changed. In this candid and life-affirming conversation, Bob shares his perspective on invisible wounds, unexpected gifts and the joy of rediscovered purpose. In Today’s Episode: Bob starts his dream job: co anchoring World News Tonight and leaves to report on the war in Iraq (7:40) The moment he was hit by a roadside bomb (12:40) Unaware if he is alive or dead (13:00) What physically happens to your body and head when you are blasted by a bomb (21:40) Are there any stories worth dying for? (39:10) Wise Words: (On Peter Jennings) “He’s the guy that I really wanted to emulate; I think I wanted to be like Peter.” (6:50) “It was never the 36 days that the ones that were painful, it was the years afterwards, certainly the months after.” (19:50) “Once that miracle of survival kinda starts to sweep away, you realize that your life is gonna be completely different and you have to make this transition. (25:10) “You’ve got this gigantic world that you have to find your spot in, you know, your direction in, and that’s a shocking change, and I think that’s the blackness. I think the blackness that everybody that’s gone through this, goes through.” Now you’ve gotta figure out what you’re gonna be and what you’re gonna do.” (25:55) “I realized that one of the reasons of religion is, I think, to give you comfort about where you’ve gonna spend most of your existence, and I think I had a realization that this is exactly what’s out there. And you can have all sorts of thoughts about what’s written in the various books and it’s got detains in it that some either believe or don’t believe, but if you really think about it, whoever the prophets may be, what they’re really trying to tell you is that it’s gonna be nice when you go.” (27:28) “There’s nothing better than friends, you know? The ones that truly are your friends are the ones that stick with you when you go through suffering, and so those I still have.” (29:15) “I think people they don’t really see what their lives are until sometimes they see something worse.” (37:55) “If you don’t have journalists out there to tell the story, then you might as well get thrown back to the great soviet days. I’ve been to the countries where in no journalism, and you can tell the impact on the people to not have it.” (39:20) “Make sure that those around you are still there by your side. That means there’s a lot you’ve got to do make sure they’re next to you. You can’t just beg for it and you can’t just assume it.” (40:57) Links Mentioned: www.bobwoodrufffoundation.org In An Instant by Bob and Lee Woodruff: https://www.amazon.com/Instant-Familys-Journey-Love-Healing/dp/0812978250 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
