This week's Exchange was recorded in November 2021 as part of our Full Circle series, which celebrates women in electronic music. DJ, producer and community organiser JADALAREIGN sat down with two of Resident Advisor's staff writers, Kiana Mickles and Nyshka Chandran, at our New York office. JADALAREIGN was raised about an hour north of New York City, in a musical household soundtracked by funk, soul, hip-hop and R&B. Growing up in a predominantly white neighbourhood impacted how she operates today—her work prioritises cultivating community, as community wasn't always something she felt she had. After playing instruments, studying fashion and ending up in a corporate job, JADALAREIGN became increasingly engaged in music through her side hustle as the music director for an entertainment blog. In 2015, she took her first DJ lesson and felt instantly drawn to the craft. Gradually, she grew more and more immersed in the New York scene. Today, JADALAREIGN is a booker for leading New York club Nowadays, using her role heading up the Friday night programming to create more space and opportunity for people of colour in dance music. She also runs a workshop series called SKILLSHARE, which supports other women of colour, as well as queer folks, non-binary people and trans people, wanting to learn about the ins and outs of the music industry. In 2020, she launched In Sessions with Sam Law and FIVEBOI, a digital production camp that, when it first launched, reached around 300 people daily from 30 different countries. In this Exchange, JADALAREIGN discusses her work and community projects, how New York's dance music culture has changed in recent years and the importance of the scene's players engaging in honest reflection to increase diversity. She also touches on the value of mentorship for marginalised creatives and what can be done to prevent artists of colour feeling tokenised. Tracklist: JADALAREIGN - 2B2S (HAUS of ALTR)

In this episode, Amish Shah, of integrated man-made diamond company ALTR Created Diamonds, joins the show for a candid, high-level discussion on the lab-grown diamond business. The conversation starts with Amish providing a glimpse into the company's production method and supply profile. Next, Paul and Amish discuss the upstream segment of the industry and address where the market is experiencing supply shortages and overages. The two then move on to discuss the mid- and downstream segments of the business, attempting to pin down current sources of demand. The conversation concludes with a talk about marketing lab-diamonds, whether man-made stones are actually “green” and how future tech applications could eventually be the greatest source of demand for lab-grown goods. The NYC-based skateboarder and musician runs the Haus of Altr label and also makes ambient, as well as films. He has had particular success producing with AceMo as AceMoMA, such as on April's standout album, A Future. As the title suggests, it took in the dustier end of 90s jungle, rough-edged house and Detroit techno, but turned out something forward-looking. Whatever MoMA Ready does, it comes through a proudly Afrofuturist lens, always with unbridled energy and the ability to make you question everything you thought you knew. This week's mix packs an awful lot in. It - of course - eschews the traditional model of a slow build towards a peak-time workout. Instead, the music just goes where MoMA wants, whenever he wants. Even the transitions play second fiddle to the selections, which is fine when the tunes are this good. Some are deep, some are smooth, there are lo-fi bangers and seductive rollers. It's the sound of a DJ going all in without a care in the world.

(00:12) Boutique Fitness = a community-like group exercise focusing on specific workouts. Vinny worked at Core Power at the Director of Operation for 8 years and become passion about what fitness does to an individual, so he decided to start up something a little bit different, ALTR Fitness. With more people participating in boutique fitness, Vinny asked his former co-worker, Kari Ament - exCOO of Core Power, to join forces. The experience of boutique fitness is the most important aspect. The small group of people with specific offerings develops into a tight niche market where workout members feel very comfortable. They choose Minneapolis because it was their hometown and they worked very closely with this market during their time at Core Power. The some what big city feel gives of more of a high-end vibe. (04:15) Doing something RIGHT takes time. Especially when it comes to sharpening a concept. Vinny and Kari spent 6 plus months developing exactly what they wanted from Real Estate to who was training the workout members to the name of the facility. The training period took 3 months. This is extreme patience. ALTR was chosen because of the alternative approach to fitness and the crisp look of ALTR without the vowel. Vinny's average quality is getting started, and Kari is the same way which was funny to reflect on. The fear of taking the first step is difficult, so Vinny tries to recognize his fears of being perfect all of the time to overcome the inability of getting started. (13:40) Challenge yourself because you never know what's going to happen. Declan wanted to start performing stand-up comedy, so he practiced for 6 weeks. Threw it all out the window a week before his big night and practices his newly formed bit one time in front of an Uber drive. He just got up there, and tried to forget the nervous because this might have been the most nervous he has ever been. Listen to this full version of this episode here. *Disclaimer: originally Golden Nuggets of Patience with your Passion (feat. Vinny Amendola)*
Vinny Amendola is the co-founder of ALTR Fitness, a local HIT fitness gym in the North Loop (Minneapolis). Vinny was head of business operations for CORE POWER before he left to start ALTR with Kari Ament (COO of CORE POWER). They launched ALTR back in August of 2017 and a little over a year later they're one of the more prominent HIT fitness gyms in the Twin Cities. Enjoy our conversation with Vinny! *Disclaimer: originally S2 E43 - Patience with your Passion (feat. Vinny Amendola)*
"Finally, a killer application of blockchain." - Will Jan, Outsell Analyst. "Would you rather have $1, or a data asset you can sell for 1,000 times, over and over again?" This was one of the first questions Dave Sikora asked me in the interview. I lead with this because it really paints the importance of data security. ALTR is offering blockchain-powered data security for the enterprise. The company is obsessed with restoring digital trust by transforming the way our data is monitored, accessed, and stored. We discovered ALTR through our analyst Will Jan, and it quickly made its way through the Outsell 300, to the Outsell 50 to watch, and to the Outsell Emerging Company Growth Tank, where the company walked away with a second place finish. James Beecham founded this company with five other founders and now serves as the company's CTO. Dave Sikora joined soon after as the company's CEO. He has been through a number of technology revolutions and provides powerful insights into how the blockchain revolution is different. The three of us dive into the creation of ALTR, the future of cyber security, the current standing of blockchain in the industry, and where we'll be in the next five years as a result. I had an amazing time with James and Dave and I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.
