We use history a lot in our worldbuilding, whether as a direct re-interpretation or as inspiration for a secondary world that we're creating. So… why do we do that? And what choices do we need to examine as we do so? Guest Alix E. Harrow joins us to discuss weaving historical realities into our fiction. The construction of history is, itself, always the process of creating a narrative through authorial and editorial choices, and so not as wildly different from writing fiction as it may seem. That interrelation means there is an ethical component to worldbuilding, particularly when dealing with issues of imperialism, colonialism, and historically marginalized populations. How do we interrogate the stories we've received, the information our research turns up, and the assumptions both we and our readers might make based on what we think we know about history? They have reviewed her work before when they discussed her novels "The Ten Thousand Doors of January" and "Starling House". Tonight's bourbon is Old Orleans from The Beautiful & The Damned Distillery. Some of you might notice that the name of the distillery also happens to be the title of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Don't know who good old F. Scott is? Well, first, crawl out of the caves, you loveable morlock! Second, he wrote The Great Gatsby and Tender Is The Night. The label on the bottle is a depiction of Moby Dick, and the name Old Orleans is a reference to the influence New Orleans had on the evolution of bourbon in America. See that? This week it's just Jonathan and Gary again, in what some listeners might view as an either a classic ramble or a series of rabbit holes from which we never fully escape. We start with a discussion of some current trends such as cozy fantasy and SF, romantasy, and dark academia, noting that these had all been around for decades before getting their present labels, and briefly consider Paul Kincaid's contention that “coziness” seems antithetical to what SF really does. We later touch upon what we're reading, mentioning some forthcoming books by Nicola Griffith, Alix E. Harrow, and R.F. Kuang and the spectacular success of the latest novel by Coode Street goest Joe Abercrombie. Somewhere in there we start chatting about collectible editions, how many copies of a book do you really need, historical fantasy, and even a bit on Robert Holdstock. Most important, though, is Coode Street's first commercial. Official Recommendations From Kris: The Traitors, season 3 (Peacock) Kris's official recommendation this week is the third season of The Traitors, the American version of the Dutch reality television series. Similar to other social deduction games like Werewolf or Mafia, The Traitors has a group of people, most of whom are labeled "faithful" and others as "traitors." Every night, the traitors gather to vote off someone from the group, thereby murdering them. The goal is to get to the end as either a faithful or a traitor to win the prize. Kris loves this show, especially for its queer cast. From Tara: Number Six by Lee Winter Tara's official recommendation this week is Number Six by Lee Winter.
